June 27, 2024 Brought my truck in to have ball joints replaced and an alignment. I was called and told to bring cash cause the credit card machine was down. I arrived paid & picked up my truck. Turns out the work on the truck was never done. The employee at the register pocketed the cash and told the people in the shop I didn't want repairs done. The owner filed a police report against the employee but never repaired my car or returned my money. It's now March of 2025. He won't call me back or answer my calls. I'm left with a broken truck & out money. A reputable business would have made this right!! Instead the owners done nothing but hide & avoid any further responsibilities. They don't know the basics of how to diagnose a vehicle issue. They had my truck for 2 days and never figured out the problem. James had horrible communication, often saying he would call me back only to totally forget. It happened repeatedly. He had a bad attitude and they forgot to put parts back on my vehicle when done. Total incompetence. "Mechanics" don't know the basics. James the "manager" is totally incapable of being a professional. I asked for district management contact and he laughed and refused to give it. My vehicle was giving errors, traction control off, engine reduced power and check engine light. took the vehicle to Calverts and they informed me that the fuse box bolts were loose. The bolts were tightened and Calverts stated that the power steering needed to be serviced. Agreed to service, a few weeks later same issue occurred, traction control off, engine reduced power and check engine light on, resulting to a tow back to Calverts. Calverts changed out bolts and advised the issue should not occur. A week later, same issue occurred, resulting to vehicle shutting down and took the vehicle back to Calverts, they shop ended keeping the vehicle for abt week and they claimed to have drove the vehicle for several miles and could not determine what was wrong with it. The vehicle was returned to me and less than 2 days of having the vehicle back, the incident occurred again. Reach to Calverts and they stuck to their word by saying they couldn't find any issues and suggest I take it to a dealer. Took the vehicle to Buick and they stated vehicle needed a fuse box and also, they found that the power steering needed a hose. Calvert is a joke and a rip off. Don't take your car to them, they will have you more frustrated and will take advantage of you financially. read more

One star is to good for this business but can't give a zero. Here's why. I went to get an oil change went by around 2:30ish told were not doing any oil changes for rest of day. So went back just before lunch again told no oil changes they have to many cars that they need to finish repairs. Today around 10:15 asked how long for a oil change. Told 2 hours. How long does it take to change oil? At Calvert's I guess 2 hours or they don't do them. I think I'm looking to get my oil changed else where. Not coming back to this 1/2 ass business. read more

I rescheduled my appointment yesterday for today. When I arrived this afternoon, there was a lady outside who entered upon my approach. She let the door close (rather than holding it), which I thought was odd. When I opened the door, the same woman said, "Can I help you?". I replied, I have an oil change appointment. She responded, "We are closed. Closed for the next 30 days." I asked why I hadn't received a phone call (since I drove 25 minutes). She replied, "He is trying, all of this just happened this morning. You can go to one of the other Calvert's locations." So, the least they could have done was give an apology, but there was no apology made. The lack of customer care was very concerning. When no other body shop in KC could see our janky sounding and rattling car for multiple days, the fate of our road trip was changed by the heroes and hearts of Calvert's. this place is a shithole, I worked here for like 2 weeks with all of my friends. owner didn't even know I worked there? he refused to pay us our worth and couldnt even have the tire machine anchored to the floor, non of the lifts get inspected along with the equipment.... this place is such a hazard. When they reopen, I highly advise avoiding this place at all cost as they ghetto rig everything to somewhat get a job done. I went to Calvert's today to have a MO State inspection performed. They failed the car for a serpentine belt that had age cracks in it - after looking at it myself, I agreed with them, it needed to be replaced. So I went and bought a new one, put it on and came right back. At this time, they told me it would be 45 minutes to an hour to pull the car in to look at the belt and insisted that they could not step outside to look at it. I thought it was odd they couldn't just go pop the hood to check it, so they said I could call the Highway Patrol if I questioned this information. So at their request, I called the Highway Patrol Inspection Officer to ask about this rule. The inspection officer stated that for a re-inspection to confirm that the parts were replaced, it was not necessary to pull the vehicle into the inspection station. I passed this info onto the lady at the front desk, who referred me back to Randy in the shop. I spoke with Randy about it and he immediately started shouting at me (note, I wasn't mad or anything - not even raising my voice) that he doesn't owe me an explanation for anything and that the highway patrol is wrong - which they could be, for all I know. Randy raged on, saying he could show me in the book where the rule was - so I accepted his invitation, but when he couldn't find it, he shoved the book into my arms and said, "here, you read it and find it!" I explained that I'm not the expert nor am I mad, I just called the Highway Patrol and they said that on a re-inspection it wasn't necessary to pull into the bay to confirm parts had been installed, unless physically necessary to do so. Again, not about who's right or who's wrong - it's about how I was treated. I walked back out into the lobby area and Randy's son came out and talked (not yelled) with me and explained better why they can or cannot do certain things - a kind gesture I appreciated. I asked his son how long he thought I'd be to get it re-inspected, and he said he'd check for me and left for a bit. About 5 minutes later, Randy stormed back into the lobby with his book in-hand - shouting at me, explaining that he found the rule that says he must inspect the vehicle in an approved inspection bay, which I kindly agreed with him - not mentioning that me nor the Highway Patrol were discussing inspections - the original question, which was only that, was if it had to be in a bay to do a visual confirmation of parts being installed. Randy continued shouting and raging about how "he can't stand people telling him how to do his job" (again, I only asked if it was OK for someone to come pop the hood - that's all I asked) and refused to let me talk. He stormed back into the shop, and I kindly asked the lady at the front for my keys so I could leave with my car. She apologized multiple times for Randy and I reassured her I wasn't mad at her and wasn't trying to start a fight. At any rate, what a mess. They may do good work (can't say), but yelling, shouting, and becoming physically aggressive (standing in personal space, throwing arms around, shoving books and material in my face/chest) at customers because they ask questions or simply request verification of something is unacceptable and ridiculous. read more

I would Give 0 stars if possible. I was charged $250 to fix my AC. After I got it back it was blowing hot air again within 5 hours. went back immediately to have them try to fix it again (BIG MISTAKE) They proceeded to hand me a bill of $500 to fix what they couldnt fix the first time around. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THESE CROOKS! THEY ARE THE TRUE DEFINITION OF SHADE TREE MECHANICS! I was there for a Missouri State inspection and was told my vehicle did not pass. I Was approached by Rick who informed that I needed new bushings and a sway bar in the front end. After the Rick worked on my car to resolve the front end issues. I took care of the invoice and walked out. I got in the car, started it and instantly had power steering noises when the steering wheel was turned in either direction! Please bear in mind that I didn't have any problems with the power steering until AFTER THEY WORKED on my vehicle. And remember it was not mentioned as a problem when the bushings and sway bar problems were initially identified. Rick openly admitted to me that he had ABSOLUTELY NO FORMAL TRAINING WHATSOEVER ON HOW TO WORK ON CARS! Not even vo-tech training in high school! Based on that alone, I know 100% this establishment screwed up my car for financial gain. Unfortunately, I can't prove it as they are pretty good at covering their "shady" tracks. Attempted to resolve is with upper management John District Manager and Owner of KCMO stores Gary Calvert. I received attitude and disrespect and an unwillingness to find a resolution to the problem. I suggested they admit their error and adjust the bill $100. To no surprise, they both blew me off. No worries though, I can use the power of the internet to expose their unethical business practices to protect other innocent consumers. This is the USA...a free country...and I can openly express and share my truthful experiences and they can do ABSOLUTELY nothing about it! On a side note, I am extremely concerned that they are using the State of Missouri's mandatory inspection process to do malicious things to consumers. My elderly mother recently took her car for her 4th oil change at Calvert's. When she was checked in, the woman at front told her that 20w is recommended for her car, however, it seems that we put 30w in the last 3 times. Really? My mother asked that they check her tires. They said that she needed 3 tires replaced at a cost of $400. She left and went to another station. Was told she didn't need tires and if she did they would be $79 per tire. No way will anyone in my family go to Calvert's. read more

Had rear brakes installed and the work took a considerable amount of time longer than I was initially told. To make it right and without me saying a word, the manager offered to turn the rear drums for free. Basically got a $60 discount for my wait. My Tahoe stops on a dime now. Just my opinion but I think some of these negative reviews are coming from individuals that aren't very familiar with repair shops and things that can delay the overall process. read more

The wife went in to get a state inspection 2 weeks after dealership full service and detailed inspection of her car..... Car needed wipers only..... At Calvert's, THEY unplugged her 3rd tail light and broke the rt side sway bar link.& Left her with an open ended quote for $177+ and open ended to be determined $$$ for electrical exploration for the 3rd tail light.... I bought all 3 wipers and both sway bar links and installed all for $43.00... I plugged the 3rd tail light back in and went to get the inspection white slip... Rude and cowardly, they passed it after 1/2 hour wait ( the shop had no other business) then the "mechanic/thief" barely scraped off the old sticker and half ass put the new sticker sort of partially over the old spot....... This place will guess on what you need fix I had a power steering issue where it was somewhat hard to turn the way so they said it was my power steering pump so when the replaced it. It did the same thing before then they come out an say well it might be the rack so I put that on hold. Then my heat went out an they told me I need a new heater core so I was like ok. So I took it to get another mechanic who is now my new mechanic an does not lie to me turns out it did not need a new heat core at all but needed a new rack so which leaves me to believe I never needed a new power steering pump this place will just guess what's wrong to try an make money at all cost stay away from this place they dont know what they are doing read more

Tried to intimidate me that I also needed rotators. Which was b.s. I drive to the store which is about 3 blocks from my home. So they didn't have brake pads in stock and wanted $70.00 deposit to order the pads. Okay . The next day the girl calls when I answer my phone she hangs up. I call back she answers hangs up. This goes on for a minute. I thought okay you are not taking my $70.00 I'm going to call from my work phone. Oh now she answers, of course she played it off. I took my car up to get my brakes done. Paid another $70.00. I will never trust taking my car back. I don't think my back breaks were bad but charged me to replace. I suggest you find a trust worthy place to take your vehicle. Went to have brakes inspected. By the time I got home, there was smoke coming from the engine compartment. The brake fluid lid was not on correctly and fluid was everywhere, I called and was told they didn't remove it. I guess was the brake fluid fairy. Tried to get oil change on car today. Because the car is in my brothers name on their books, I gave his name. They REFUSED to do the oil change because I didn't want to make a new account under my name. The girl just shrugged her shoulders and said whatever....then a guy from the back came out and told me to get out...I wasn't even making a scene! There was also another lady in there at the same time who was trying to tell them she didn't want a specific service...the tech was yelling and arguing with her. I will NEVER EVER be back. I brought my car in for brakes to be fixed which cost a whole heck of a lot of money. But that's not my issue. They told us an hour to an hour and a half wait. After two hours of waiting and it still not ready someone finally came out of the back to talk to another customer and I asked him how much longer. He said they parts place brought the wrong part so they are waiting on the right ones to be delivered. I am still sitting here now going on two and a half hours and it's not ready. First and foremost, I race cars as a hobby and work on cars in my spare time. My father is also a mechanic. I went in and told them I needed an alignment. They asked what the symptoms were and I described the symptoms which were definitely that of a car in need of an alignment. After an hour they called me back. Said the car needed a new tie rod end, wheel bearings, and a cv joint. All in told they wanted to charge me north of $1000 to perform such repairs. I thanked them for their time and told them I would save for the repairs. The next day I went to my mechanic dad with a lift and raised the car up. Tie rod inspected: perfectly fine. No indicators that it was in need of replacement. Wheel bearings inspected: No indication of wear and no need for replacement. CV Joint/axle: Inspected and found no need for repair, replacement, or service to the cv boot. Not only were the repairs not needed but the price they wanted for the replacement items was astronomical. I could internet source brand name parts for around a third or less than what they wanted. I went because it was winter and I didn't feel like doing the work. I was targeted as one that should pay too much for unneeded repairs. I acted like a regular consumer and feel that they tried to take advantage of me. I will never go here again. read more

We had been taking our cars and trucks to the Independence Auto Express for years. Recently took the car in for a quote on clutch work. They came back with a quote of $1700. Said nobody had the parts they needed to fix the car for cheaper. That was almost as much as my car is worth. Got quotes from several other places and all other quotes were less than half of their quote. Ended up going somewhere else to get the work done. Had something similar happen once before when AC on car broke. Wanted to charge me $1000, said I couldn't afford more than $750. They dropped the price immediately, which tells me they just charge whatever in hopes that someone will payit. We will never be back to them. read more

3 terrible things this place did starting with the least bad and getting worse: 1. I wanted to take advantage of 2 coupons I had. One was Oil Change for 14.99 and the other was FULL service Tune up for 59.99. I called ahead and an employee told me to bring the coupons in- expired or not, and they would honor them. This was not the case when I came in. Lisa told me I would have to use a newer coupon offering oil change for $20. 2. I drop my truck off for 4 hours and get a call from the mechanic who claims my vehicle needs $2200 worth of work. I was expecting a quote on some things i knew were wrong. The thing that ticks me off is he specifically said "your fuel filter is VERY bad and needs replaced." Funny because I had Valvoline change my oil filter 3000 miles ago. The next morning, I took my truck to Valvoline, and Jessica walks me down to the bay and shows me a brand new, shiny fuel filter that they, indeed installed. NOTHING WRONG. Calvert's wanted $180 to replace it too! 3. While I'm under the vehicle, at Valvoline, I notice a MESS of oil that the mechanic at Calvert's failed to wipe off after his work was complete. He didn't care to while down my ball joints or do ANYTHING AT ALL that he wasn't making money on. I think its common etiquette to clean the oil you dripped everywhere off. Oh, and you have to pay $5 to get windshield fluids checked and filled, while most places do this for free. If the work you need done is preventative, go right down the road, east about 3 blocks to Valvoline. If its something that needs repaired/replaced, and you cant do it yourself DO NOT go to this location. Find another mechanic. read more

Worst place ever!!! I Took my car there to fix an oil leak. They told me i had to pay the money up front before they fixed it as if i was some type of criminal. Then one of the men told me that my car was a bad brand and that I should spend more money on my car instead of going out to buy nice clothes....This really did happen .....This was extremely disrespectful. I called the corporate office about this and nothing was done. This is the worst place ever. By the way my price was $1038.00 and the problem did not end. Rip off. They will lie to you and tell you, that you have to have certain things done to your car or it will void your warranty. Had to pay hundreds of dollars because I believed them. Called the warranty company right after and they said that was NOT true. I got rolled. I will NEVER go back. Don't believe them when they tell you something needs to be done. Save yourself some money and take it somewhere you can trust to be honest and not just take your money.
