Jessica Cramer at Calvin Mitchell has been my stylist for a little over a year and in that time she has canceled on me 4 times with little to no notice. The very first time it happened, I was literally on my way to the appointment when the salon called me to say that she would not be able to keep my appointment. I had an appointment scheduled for September 17th and she texted me after 10 pm the night before to let me know that she was canceling my appointment for 9:00 the next morning. When I asked her if we could reschedule another appointment for the following week as I had a family function to go to, she said of course. When I tried to reach back out to her to reschedule, several times, she just never responded. I figured I would give it one more shot. I had an appointment scheduled for 5:30 today(6 weeks since she canceled my last appointment) and low and behold, the salon called me at 2:05 to let me know that she would not be in and that she was canceling my appointment! Seriously? When I called the salon to ask what was going on, I was told that she was an independent contractor who sets her own schedule and prices. Apparently, they don't care how their stylist's actions and behavior reflect on their business because when I told them about what has been going on, they told me I could go to another salon. For most of my life I was never one to stick with having a consistent person cut and color my hair. I went to whatever salon was most convenient or least expensive, and since I live an hour from Louisville there isn't much to pick from. However, after a few awful haircuts I decided to try finding someone who could become "my" hairdresser. I was matched with Leanna years ago and now can't imagine working with anyone else! She makes it easy for me to schedule appointments and knows so much about styling, which she is willing to teach you. The salon is welcoming, with plenty of parking and an accessible location. Leanna introduced me to their Kevin Murphy shampoo and conditioner, which has helped my color last longer and been well worth the money. John is one of the best colorist I have ever seen. He has been doing my fine detailed highlights for more than 10 years, I could not recommend him more. He is Super personable and kind and I get constant compliments on my hair. Everything always turns out very natural looking and regrowth is very forgiving. The salon is always impeccably clean and everyone who works there is super friendly and attentive. Just had my first visit at Calvin Mitchell's and it was the bomb. I've been seeing Jessica for years (family) and she just started here. She did AMAZING work, as always. (I went from a caramel balayage to a dark chocolate brown ombré in ONE visit) Now about the salon, from the receptionist, to the stylists, and to even the owner...so so nice and welcoming!!!!! I actually used to go to this salon because I had a stylist, Cher, who wonderfully cut my hair and highlighted it! Without a doubt she is great at what she does, but what really irked me was that during this recent appointment I had with her, she charged me $300 for a cut and highlight, which is a price I have NEVER been charged there before. Her reasoning was because it took three hours long to cut and bleach my hair, which to that I would like to say is that it took maybe two hours to bleach my hair and between 30-45 minutes to cut because of my hair being relatively short anyways. When I confronted her about this, she got defensive and I get it was because I was late to the appointment by 40 min... I'm disclosing this in my comment because I'm usually NEVER late to an appointment, and I was planning to tip her a huge amount because I felt so bad for being late, but $300? That was extremely excessive and needless to say I paid the amount, but I will NEVER return to this salon again. If you ladies do choose to go, I strongly urge you to sit down with your stylist and talk about what you can afford and if the prices will remain consistent. Had she told me her rates had changed, I would NOT haven gotten the highlights and just the cut. I'm not so much mad, as I am disappointed, because as a customer of hers who had been going to her frequently she knows that I'm a college going kid and what I am able to afford and what I am not. My hair stylist relocated here from the Chopping Block, so I went with her. I actually like this place more! I no longer have to get trapped in the traffic crunch on Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews. The building is easily accessible from the parking lot. The place is very clean. The chairs and sink to wash hair are very comfortable and doesn't hurt the neck. The place has always been busy, yet the staff always greet you with a smile and are very hospitable. Karen is very happy with her move and I'm glad to discover a new place. Plus they are expanding and it hopefully will be done by end of June. read more

Unfortunately this salon has gotten way to big and the people working there really do not care about their clients. After five or six years of getting a cut and color and then a pedicure I have never been treated so rudely. Over the years the staff has changed more of my appointments to fit their schedule than I can remember. Due to a foot injury and a bad blister I had to cancel a pedicure and due to illness I had to cancel a cut. I was informed that due to the busy "Holiday" season there would be a cancellation charge. First of all the I have always paid cash, given a 20% plus tip plus a very good Christmas tip or gift card. This saloon allows several stylist to charge what they want and you never really know what it is going to cost. A lite trim and color one time might be as much as a full cut and color. As this salon has expanded the owner now can not be troubled to say "Hello" or ask if everything is OK. Since I canceled all of my future pre-booked appointments with the rude receptionist that could not be troubled with asking that I hope you feel better all she kept saying over and over is there is going to be a cancellation charge, I have not heard a word from the two women that furnish the service. How short sighted of them to not even realize that they lost cash and tips that amount to a hell of a lot more than a cancellation charge. Most of their clients do not tip, use their credit cards, and do not come like clock work. How very short sited and nonprofessional this salon has turned out to be. read more
