Overcooked/old, jerk was used as a covering!
    AM E.

Finally! Hours & days said to be open, they were closed. Caught it open one day as I was passing by, so I tried to call ahead, they played as if they couldn't hear. Granted it was an hour before closing, they could have just stated that. This time, I literally doubled back to finally check it off the list. Order the jerk chicken, curry potatoes, & beans/rice. You could taste the chicken was grilled, but more or less, the jerk is used as a sauce/covering. The chicken was either overcooked or old. I'm leaning towards old.

A bit of a strange location physically, but I firmly suggest you go in and try the food.

I'm not a Caribbean connoisseur, but I do know what good food tastes like, and this place has excellent food that just flat out makes you feel good on the inside. Eating in might not be for everyone, but regardless of whether you plan to eat there or elsewhere your food is served up in a to go container. The reason I say this is the music is loud and high energy, and the TV (at least when I was there) isn't tuned into anything that one could casually watch. I personally enjoyed the music and the general vibe of the spot, but I could see why others wouldn't. One thing that IS for everybody here, is the food. I had shrimp curry, and told them to do it their version of spicy. I will admit, it was almost too much for me, but it was more spicy flavorful than just spicy hot. I ordered a plain roti to eat it with, and while that turned out to be an expensive addition to my meal, it was some of the best bread I have had in a long time. I was making small wraps of that with some of my curry over and over. One day I will come for lunch and enjoy one of their rolled rotis, which are basically just a Caribbean burrito.

Oxtail Stew Stew Cabbage Stir Fri Peas & Rice

Absolutely delicious. The oxtail tray is my favorite thing to get here. It looks like a hole in the wall restaurant, but I hope my picture can show you better than I can tell you about the quality. You will suck them oxtail bones dry, TRUST!

Full Plate - Curry Chicken, Indies Chicken Stew, Oxtail Stew, Cabbage, Rice & Peas, and Plantains! Good, Mon!

This new place (opened a month ago or so) is tiny, located in the general area where TV Grill was located back in the day. As the name implies, they serve Caribbean cuisine including Jerk Ribs, Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken, Indies Stew (chicken), Oxtail Stew, and Roti Wraps - they make the roti in house! On the weekends they offer Peppa Shrimp, Curry Goat, and Fish Curry. Sides include Plantains, Cabbage, Rice, Rice & Peas, Curry Potatoes, and even a version of Mac & Cheese. I caught'em between lunch and dinner Friday, so they were temporarily out of Curry Goat (they use thick cuts of goat with the bone in) and Peppa Shrimp. I took an order of what they did have - Curry Chicken, lunch size ($7.25 with Cabbage and Rice & Peas), Indies Stew, dinner portion ($9 with Cabbage and Rice), and Oxtail Stew, dinner portion also ($10.50 with Cabbage , Rice & Peas, & Plantains). Unfortunately they were also out of the Roti. There was not an item that was not, at the very least, good, and some were exceptional. The Oxtail Stew was in that exceptional class - loaded with flavor, fork tender, and smothered in a thick, tasty gravy - pushed around with the rice, and you have a great taste treat. Both the Indies Stew and the Curry Chicken were very good, though the Curry Chicken seemed to have a bit more flavor, a touch more zip! The Rice & Peas were excellent, and the amount of peas was impressive - other restaurants in the area seem to skimp on the peas - often it should be called Rice & A Pea or Two. The Cabbage is the Caribbean version, cooked al dente with some nice heat mixed in. The Plantains are steamed here, giving them a "softer" texture than most - this is a good version, but as with most things, I prefer them pan fried, with a little outside crust. They have a house hot sauce, that is a real hot sauce - the amount they provide is small, but it is more than enough. All in all, a very nice meal - one that we'll repeat and add to. The folks here (husband and wife team) are friendly and efficient, really nice folks. Small place, take out is the best option - lots of folks don't find their way to this side of town, but maybe they should.

Daily specials - call to find out what they are offering each day.

Ate a sampling of their menu options during an Ethnosh Noshup - loved the curry chicken and pepper shrimp (cooked mild). Next time, I would get the pepper shrimp spicier and the curry chicken again. I also want to try other Roti (with meat). The Roti with curried potato was just okay. Heads-up: there are bones in the meat. Delicious food overall. Calypso Mama has been in GSO for 3 years! Go eat here. You will not be disappointed.

    Amazing roti

I wish I could rate this place 10 stars but 5 will have to do. I don't usually write such a long review but this restaurant deserves it. I'm not sure which was better the food or the service, I'll start with the food. My husband and I rarely try Caribbean food out because it's often Americanized and just not good. This was not the case at Calypso Mama. I had curry chicken, stewed cabbage, and peas and rice. The chicken had an amazing flavor and was fall off the bone tender. The peas and rice were excellent but the stewed cabbage was out of this world and I wished I'd gotten an order to go it was so good. My husband had curry goat, curry potatoes, and roti wrap. It was my husband's first time trying goat and he almost ate the bones. The potatoes were delicious. But the roti...... AMAZING! There is no way you can walk into this place and leave in a bad mood. I have not had service so good in a long time. Everyone was welcoming and inviting that worked here. We felt as if we were at a friends house for dinner. I'm already planning my next trip back and I hope Calypso Mama is around for a very long time.

Food was cooked upon order, fresh hot. I ordered stewed chicken which was sweet. The roti tasted like pie crust.

Worst jerk chicken ever. Super mid. They are skimp with it and it's overpriced. This is solely for the jerk chicken. Never again.

Personally, I think they provide adequate portions and who doesn't love a heavy plate. I have tried the oxtails, rice and peas, jerk short ribs, collards, cabbage, and Mac and Cheese. Everything was very flavorful and the jerk sauce and seasoning is great. It's a sweet heat but not too much that you can't enjoy it. I find they were very easy to order through. Just check out their Instagram page which houses a link to order from. I love that the wait time is as outlined and each time, my food was ready and hot. It's very hard to find good Caribbean food and this one is worth trying. Price wise, they are fair so don't get alarmed. They are very big portions. They do have an oxtail steak and cheese that's priced at $30. I may give it a try next time. I'll keep you all posted if I do lol.

We ordered two rolling cheesesteaks, mac & cheese, a jerk chicken combo (after being told they didn't have enough shrimp for the original order and asking us to substitute), plus drinks. When I asked for a receipt and questioned the charge, resolving the discrepancy became unnecessarily difficult before I finally received an $8 correction. That alone left a bad impression. Another concern was cleanliness. As for the food: The rolling cheesesteaks were decent but very greasy. The mac & cheese was underwhelming. The jerk chicken combo was also extremely oily/greasy. Drinks were ok. For the amount spent, the food quality and overall experience simply did not justify the cost. Cute concept, but major improvements are needed in pricing transparency, cleanliness, and consistency.

My initial introduction was when they were located in Stock and Grain Food Hall. I had wanted to try them for a while and luckily I was invited to a Yelp Event where I was able to sample some items. The service was still wonderful and the food was really good. The sweet potato cornbread is one of my favs and the chicken wings and catfish bites were fried to perfection. I love collard greens but do understand, everyone makes them differently. My family is from eastern NC so we make ours savory, theirs have a little sweetness to it.
