I celebrated my 38th birthday and I am so pleased to say it was a GREAT choice! My in-laws are vegan, so I'm always trying to find restaurants that are enjoyable for them and my omnivorous family. I emailed a few days ahead of time to ask about their options and Juan was kind enough to answer all of my questions. Pangaea is a fusion restaurant that offers a 3-course (soup or salad, entree, and dessert) menu or you can order à la carte. My husband, my FIL and I opted for the 3-course. My daughters ordered chicken wings and fries. My MIL selected an appetizer and an entree. So let's talk food. Starters: -husband got the watermelon tataki salad. This was really tasty but def an explosion of flavor in your mouth. So brace yourself if you're not an eclectic food eater. -I got the peach panzanella salad. Lots of bread but that's what panzanella is lol. I wish there was more peaches but the flavors were really balanced. MIL got the dodo. Think of sweet and spicy. This is a Nigerian dish with sweet plantains, accompanied by pickled red onions and a mild hot sauce. Not too spicy. Plantains perfectly cooked. If I had a gigantic bowl of this, I would've been in heaven lol. Entrees: -The chef whipped up a new creation just for my in-laws. It was PERFECT. Tempura flash fried broccoli with stuffed peppers. They really really enjoyed the dish. Super Compliments to the chef. Even tho it was my birthday, I am so thrilled that they took the time and care to personalize a dish just for them. -husband ordered the Chinese Five Spice Ailine Chicken. Roasted chicken leg quarters with shaved brussels, Chinese sausage, a lime fish sauce and a citrus demi-glacé. Husband stayed getting the true fusion stuff lol. This dish was SO diff btw the five spice and the limey fish sauce, but it again worked so well! I liked this dish too. - I got the mofongo. The shrimp were big and plenty - perfectly cooked. That was the best part. The actual mofongo tho... could've used some more seasonings. That said, it's okay because I had so much flavor in all of my other dishes. Dessert: -husband got the Apple Pie Mille-Feuille. FIL got the vegan version of that. Both really enjoyed it. - I got the ube cheesecake. Btw the dodo and this, favorite dish. I LOVE ube and that mango sauce complimented it perfectly. Staff were super friendly. It's an intimate kinda restaurant and not really a kid kinda place (no chicken tenders lol), but I liked it that way. Comfortable seating with an outdoor covered option. We were really looking forward to trying Pangaea, and while there were a few highlights, overall the food was a bit disappointing tonight. The orange black sesame wings were definitely one of the better items we tried, and we also enjoyed the truffle fries. I specifically asked for the truffle sauce on the side, though, and was surprised when the sauce brought out was simply ketchup. I ordered the skirt steak, and unfortunately it was very bland and seemed to be lacking seasoning. The chimichurri also missed the mark for me. Instead of the bright garlic, red pepper and acidic flavors I expect from a good chimichurri, it tasted mostly like only parsley and olive oil, which didn't add much flavor to an already under-seasoned steak. My husband really enjoyed the coconut rice with his skirt steak, but I wasn't a fan of that rice nor the rice and red bean mixture that came with my meal. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and some interesting menu options, and the wings were definitely the standout for us. Unfortunately, the rest of my meal didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for. With a little more attention to seasoning and flavor, I think the dishes could be much better. (Especially at their prices) Last note: It's definitely hard on the wait staff if there are items customers request only to find out they are no longer being served because "they are changing the menu". We hit up Pangaea in downtown Greensboro last night with another couple, and it delivered a strong 4-star experience--with just enough personality to keep things interesting. I kicked things off with the "Alex Old Fashioned," which I enjoyed. Brittani, however, took one sip and looked at me like I had just ordered dessert in a glass--so, your mileage may vary depending on your sweet tooth and relationship dynamics. Instead of going full tapa chaos, we opted for the $60 three-course route. The tomato soup was a solid opener--comforting, no notes. The burrata was... fine. It felt like it was one good drizzle of something sweet away from being memorable, but it never quite got there. Then the mains showed up and completely changed the tone of the evening. The burger and the gnocchi? Unreal. Like "briefly stop talking to your friends mid-sentence" good. Easily the highlight. Dessert was an empanada that landed squarely in the "we're already full but let's be polite" category. It did its job, but the stars had already been earned earlier. Shoutout to our server, Amanda--absolute legend. Cool, knowledgeable, and casually working on a full tattoo bodysuit, which somehow made me feel like I showed up to dinner wildly underachieving. She was fantastic. Bonus points: parking downtown was easy, and it wasn't packed, which felt like winning twice. A unique and enjoyable dining experience in downtown. I find the menu to be creative and interesting, they do a great job with their drinks and the staff is very friendly. Prices tend to be a bit higher but they have an interesting 3 course option for $60...that does not include drinks. Tonight I had the watermelon salad, is was dressed to heavily for my taste, the mushroom ravioli and the apple tart dessert. The ravioli was good but a bit thin while the apple tart was excellent. The cocktails were excellent and they have a wine selection that makes it easy to find a good pairing. We enjoy going Pangaea for something different and have always been impressed with the service team. I think you should give them a try! read more

I may have to give Pangaea a second try. I wasn't exactly impressed the first time. Service was fast and my drink was good. Our waitress was pleasant. They were out of mahi mahi. Salmon was the substitution. In my opinion that isn't a good substitute. The fish was cooked in banana leaves and tasty very fishy. The texture was strange. I was offered pork instead which is something that I don't eat. I got soup instead and it was tasty but not a fair trade in my opinion. read more

Our first visit to Pangaea went great! To drink we started with the Alex Fashion and the Layover in Bangkok. Both were great drinks, the Cinnamon smoke in the Alex fashion was addicting! We decided to do 4 different plates to split since most of the plates are a shareable size. The papas bravas were great, who says no to potatoes? The sauce complimented the potatoes perfectly. The sweet plantain gnocchi was by far the best thing we had, the gnocchi wasn't sticky like some can be, it was on top of a ragú style sauce made with chorizo, and topped with parmesan cheese. yum. The Filipino pork adobo was great too, the pork was cooked well and the puffed rice added a fun texture. I wish there was a little more sauce with it. Lastly the beef kofta was a fun addition. The beef was tender and the sauce with the pearl onion was a great touch! For dessert we got the Ube Cheesecake and the Apple Pie Mille Feuille. The Ube Cheesecake was sooo good, and the Apple Pie Mille Feuille was really fun, I definitely wanted some ice cream with it but overall it was good. The apples were cooked perfectly. I truly can't say enough about Pangaea! My husband and I wanted to celebrate NYE somewhere different and Pangaea has been on my radar for a while so we decided to pull the trigger. And boy are we glad we did! Their menu is unique in that they have appetizers and small plates but they also have a three course meal option you can indulge in (you can also order off the three course menu a la carte). The service was great for a busy NYE evening and the restaurant is spacious and has a dark, moody, sexy vibe. The food was really something to admire. We started with baked scallops and mussels which were delightful. We then each went with the three course menu option that's only $55 per person which is a steal! I got the butternut squash soup, shrimp and butternut squash risotto, and the chocolate molten lava cake. My husband got the "crab salad", ribeye, and deconstructed apple pie. Each dish was so unique and flavorful. My husband's ribeye was one of the best we've ever had while dining at a restaurant and again, only $55 for all three courses! My wife and I came here on Valentine's Day. All the staff was very friendly and polite, from host, server, bartender, and I think the manager. We shared an appetizer, the Beef Kofta, and for entrees we had the pork tenderloin with green curry sauce and the short rib with gnocchi. Nothing was bad, but overall there was not much wow factor from anything. The texture of the meatballs in the beef kofta made me think they weren't made fresh there in the restaurant. The pork tenderloin entree was the best of what we got. There were good flavors. But for how everything was priced, we expected more. The beef short rib did not taste like a $50 entree. The place had more of a bar feel, since the bar was right in the middle of the restaurant and we were seated right at the entrance where the servers went in and out, which made it a little noisy, coupled with the music playing, which wasn't loud, but not soft either. There were no tablecloths and some of the plates were thick plastic. We were pretty surprised for this atmosphere that all soups and salads, and all desserts were $25. The menu stated that a 3 course meal, I'm guessing one soup or salad, one entree and one dessert was $80. I'm guessing they were strategizing people would opt for that thinking it was a good deal. We didn't want to spend $25 on a dessert, so we had dessert somewhere else. My wife and l love to go out to eat and have had some amazing food. This is a very nice restaurant with very good food. The space is open and not crowded. The wine selection is very good and prices seem in line. Our server Alex was great. Overall, we had a great experience with a few minor notes. Had a reservation for dinner on Saturday evening at around 7 and we were immediately sat upon arrival. Our waitress was outstanding. She was extremely attentive and friendly. We each started with a cocktail - Alex Fashion and Whiskey Sour Crème brûlée at our waitress' recommendation (she mentioned that some guests have deemed it one of the best drinks they have ever had and my friend completely agreed!). I later ordered the Blueberry Night which was a great cocktail but sweet, and heavy on the blueberry (obviously) but refreshing! We opted for a few small bites a piece. I had the Scallop Rockefeller and Tuna Bites. Both delicious. The Tuna Bites were my favorite. My friend had the Caprese Salad and Scallop Rockefeller because... The unfortunate timing of when we chose to go was that their seasonal menu was ending and their Fall menu was being implemented a couple days later. Due to this, they were out of two/three dishes we ordered like the wings, jerk chicken, and we (luckily) got the last order of Scallop Rockefellers. I understand that due to the concept of the restaurant this can happen, but I'm not sure what later diners were going to choose from! Either way, our dishes were delightful. Now, we each spent about $80 a piece after tip and I can't say that it was worth that price tag, However, I noticed they have a 3 courses for $45 special on their menu that I would absolutely come back for. We arrived around 6:15 pm hoping we could check out the rooftop bar before our show at Tanger. We were greeted immediately, but were told that the upstairs didn't open until 8 pm. We glanced inside and were drawn in by the relaxed vibe and comfortable and eclectic seating area at the bar, so we decided to stay for a cocktail. It was early and before the dinner rush, but the chill energy of the entire restaurant, from back of the house to front, was impressive. We were only ordering drinks this time, but everything on the menu sounded delicious. Alex, the mixologist, recommended a few drinks and he did not disappoint. My partner wanted a gin drink and he recommended one called La Flor, named after his Mother. I ordered the Alex fashion, perfect for the Fall and the orange and cinnamon infused ice cube was a crafty touch! Alex chatted with us and was very personable and invested in his craft. The price point for the cocktails may be a little steep for some, but on a date night and for a quality drink, it's worth it. I was so bummed after visiting Pangaea. It is such a cool spot, especially being one of the few places in town with a rooftop, which just made the food being bad even more disappointing. Everything we ordered was just slightly off. The mac-n-cheese needed salt badly and the plantain dish was so hard we couldn't hardly cut or bite into it. For starters, It has a nice ambiance, very open, we chose a table over the booth and the chairs were surprisingly so comfortable and under the tables I was surprised they were lined by foam! I was expecting to bang my knee under the table when I crossed my legs but instead I was pleasantly surprised by this set up. Service Was great, we were checked on often to make sure we had anything we needed. We ordered a mix of starters and small plates so we could share and try a few different options. We chose the pumpkin and kale salad, plantain gnocchi, fish tacos, and tuna bites. Pumpkin and kale salad was amazing! Plantain gnocchi was okay, my fiancé liked it more than I did.. it was like a gnocchi on bolognese sauce. Tuna bites were also alright, was a tuna tar tar on top of something similar to a tater tot. And finally the fish tacos were also good, however nothing jumped out as amazing for compared to them all being priced on the higher side. We came here for our anniversary. Started with a dragonfruit drink and a Jarritos highball tamarind. Both very refreshing. The Jarritos a little sweet but like nothing I have ever tasted before. That is what you get here, a bunch of amazing flavors that you wouldn't think would go together but they absolutely do! Drink menu is creative and well priced. We decided to order multiple small plates and an entreé each to share overall. This is the way to do it to try most of these remarkable foods. Serving sizes are good even for small plates. The Yuca balls and croqueta de jamón are my favorites. They are perfectly fried, crispy with no excess grease. Pan con tomate is a classic. The shrimp ceviche was delightful and fresh. My husband and I love the sweet plantain gnocchi, another favorite on the menu. If you go here, you must try this! Not to mention, each plate has its unique taste with a beautiful presentation. For dessert we have had the tembleque which is a Puerto Rican pudding but in a foam form. This was delicious! Especially if you like coconut. We also tried the canoli which was perfectly made and with just the right amount of sweetness. I noticed a lot of dishes have manchego which is such a great cheese. Been wanting to try this downtown spot. Loved that I could make a reservation online. But it turns out it wasn't really needed as it was not that full for a Friday night. The interior was very clean and inviting. It has a huge bar with plenty of seating. One special touchI really appreciated was they added foam to the underside of the tables so your legs don't hit anything hard/sharp. Classy! Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We knew we wanted to get a bunch of plates and share and he helped us hone in on what we wanted. Good cocktails here. This place is on the higher end as far as cost so my expectations were high, and the menu sounded delicious. It is a tapas type place so dishes come as they are done. We started with the Scallop Rockefeller which included 6 large sheets filled with creamy spinach and crispy garlic. I am usually not super into Grilled Octopus but I thought this was a well executed version. The octopus was not chewy and loved the chimichurri and romesco. This was a pretty plate of food. We got 2 salads (I like the idea that a flat bread is considered a salad here). Next was truffle Mac and cheese and wagyu sliders (one of the table favorites). Very rich, cozy, and satisfying. To finish the meal off we got an order of the Tiki Masala Cauliflower and Lamb Lollipop entree. Was kind of shocked that this entree was surprisingly small for what it cost. It was only 2 small lollipops and lots of couscous basically. Here's the bottom line, everything was cooked well and tasted good. However, most was not exceptional. Also, we ordered a LOT of food (yeah it was shared amongst 4 people but even still). Each small plates costs between $13-$25 and Entrees $25-$40. We didn't leave full. WOW. I cannot say enough about this restaurant. The entire experience blew us away. The food was a beautiful fusion of flavors. I got the plantain gnocchi with chorizo. I love trying new things and it did not disappoint!! the plantains were Perfect. We also had the scallops Rockefeller as a starter and that was one of the most delicious Smokey flavors I've ever experienced. Trust me when I say you want to order the 6, not the 3!!! you'll with there was a 12 piece!! Lastly, not only was our waitress, Amanda, attentive and knowledgeable on the menu items, but the owner himself came out to greet us at the end of our meal because he was told it was our first time dining there. it put such a huge smile on our faces and made us so excited to come back!! you can tell this man loves what he does and loves the people he serves. Thankfully he was able to try a bunch of dishes, and me, as a vegetarian, had just as many to try as well! The beet tartare, the canteloupe, the yuca ball - I could go on and on. One dish was better than the next. Every bite was a new adventure. It took me far too long to write this review but while the prices were not low, the value was there, 100%! We came here for NYE. I was a little put-off upon arrival that we would be dining on a prix fixe meal for NYE and when making the reservations, I don't recall any notice of such... I really wanted to try the paella. Anyway - that's my only real grievance. The food - overall - was pretty remarkable! The 1st, 3rd, and 4th courses were exceptionaI! I loved the ambiance - this place is really green... and I'm a huge fan of the decor and love the flatware! The service was friendly and kind but a bit unpolished for the vibe this place is so clearly trying to convey. We sat with food in front of us with no utensils on more than one occasion. I requested a wine list twice and was never given one... I wanted to order a bottle of wine but was unable to. My first glass of wine sat empty until I was able to call someone back to the table, after delivering clean utensils, to request another... no huge deal... but for the price tag and ambiance one might expect a bit more. read more

This is definitely a place worth repeat visits. The food was delicious and creative - steak tartare on a cracker that looks like an oyster shell? Clever & oh-so-good. The rooftop bar/patio was esthetically pleasing for a nice summer night and drinks superb. After having a drink upstairs we ate at the bar in the restaurant. Had an extremely personable bartender and server who consistently interacted with us and gave the best recommendations when I asked. The small plates were truly amazing. How many times have you had a dish served, taken a bite, and exclaimed, "Wow!" That's literally the case with every dish I've had at Pangaea! It's not easy to excel at this level, but the people at Pangaea have done it! Everything we ate was amazing. Everything was flavorful but not in a way that beats you up! You can tell when a kitchen is full of people who truly understand food, and Pangaea has that! The wine list is also amazing, but even more important are the bartenders who know that wine and make expert recommendations. The combination of unique and exceptional food paired with beautiful wines is why Pangaea is at the top of our list! I wondered, after their successful opening night, if Pangaea could turn the corner and produce those results every evening. Based on my experience...absolutely! In fact, they are better! My husband and I visited here on Saturday night for dinner, and it was, hands down, the best dining experience we have had in a loooonnnng time. We were greeted by a very friendly gentleman, who ended up being our server (and the bartender). He went over the menu with us and was incredibly helpful when it came to navigating the dishes and the amount of food we should order, etc. We ended up sharing three small plates to start, including scallops Rockefeller, beef kofta, and yuca balls. Every bite was scrumptious. Then my husband had the pork tenderloin curry and I had the mushroom risotto, which ended up apparently being the favorite dishes of nearly every server we spoke with (and we didn't realize that when we ordered). I can see why. Both dishes were outstanding. As far as beverages, I started with a glass of rose, and my husband had a Chardonnay, and then we both had glasses of an Oregon Pinot Noir. We drink a decent amount of wine, and these wines (none of which I'd ever heard of) were absolutely amazing. Whomever buys their wine knows what they are doing. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely, and every person we spoke with over the course of the evening was so nice and welcoming and knowledgeable. We will DEFINITELY be back. read more

Nestled in the heart of downtown Greensboro, we stumbled upon Pangaea Bistro & Bar for the first time last weekend. We knew we wanted to experience something different and were delighted at the gem we found. Aptly named, Pangaea did not disappoint with its fusion cuisine. Blending bold flavors from Africa, the Caribbean, South America, and Asia (just some of the flavors we enjoyed), this bistro was a treat for our Friday-night-adventurous palates. The dim lighting, warm, rustic brick, high ceiling, and beautiful wood floors created an intimate yet urban-meets-cosmopolitan atmosphere. The noise level was not too loud or quiet, as everyone appeared to genuinely enjoy their evening. We began at the bar with Alex, the bartender. While my husband parked the car, I ordered two Old Fashions. I had never tried one, so I asked Alex to "make one I will like." And did he ever! The Alex Smoked Cinnamon Old Fashion--or maybe just the Alex Special Old Fashion--got me hooked the first time! The Alex Special was aromatic and smooth, with a smoky flavor that enhanced the warm, spicy notes of cinnamon, with a hint of sweetness. As for Alex, aside from being a creative and knowledgeable bartender, he was very laid-back with an engaging, personable style and seemed to enjoy his craft thoroughly! We decided to sit at a table at the end of the bar and continue our evening with Alex as our Server and Bartender. Since it was our first time at Pangaea, we thought it would be fun to let him continue to guide our tasting experience... Our Starter was a yummy Scallop Rockefeller (cream spinach and crispy garlic). It was almost not enough, but as it turned out, it was perfect when we followed it with three small plates and one entrée. We were there to do a taste testing of the delectable kind, and Alex did not disappoint. Our small plates: the Filipino Pork with Filipino adobo sauce and puffed rice; the Dodo--a sizeable, sweet plantain with chili flake, pickled red onions, hot sauce, and lime; and the Thai Cucumber and Snow Crab appetizer with a small cucumber salad of carrots, scallions, peanuts, Thai Chili, tomato, and corn. For our shared entrée, we chose the Green Coconut Curry Pork Tenderloin, Pepita, cilantro, and a scoop of coconut rice. We were pleasantly surprised at the ample portion of mouth-watering pork medallions, cooked to perfection. We even took home leftovers. My only regret--we didn't think to leave room for dessert (Molten Lava Cake next time!). What a nice evening. An after work night out and Pangaea provided a great meal. The flavors were bold and complementary. Scallops Rockefeller were a nice take on the classic with puréed spinach, broiled Parmesan and bits of crispy garlic. Beet carpaccio was super bright with whole segments of citrus and bits of goat cheese/feta with fresh arugula. The ribeye poivre was cooked to perfection and slathered with crushed peppercorns. A side of confit carrots and what tasted like hollandaise all went perfectly together. The finish of crepe soufflé was so good. With a puffy crepe, brûlée smeared with creme anglais. Service from Daniel was superb and enjoyable. We look forward to returning often. read more

I was pretty disappointed in my experience here, but not by the service or hospitality. I have no issue paying top dollar for any meal but this just didn't cut it. The first starter my partner and I got "it's not an oyster" was very creative, being beef tartare in an edible oyster shell. That being said, $18 dollars for two pieces is ridiculous, and the truffle accent really ruined it for me. You couldn't appreciate the subtleness of the other flavors because the truffle overwhelmed it completely. The beet salad was fine, fresh and well balanced but nothing out of the ordinary (which I didn't expect it to be) My partner got the duck dish, which was presented beautifully and flavorful. Really appreciated the little gems in this dish, such as the pomegranate seeds and mushrooms. But I was a bit disappointed about the portion of the duck, especially with it being almost forty dollars for 6 scallop sized pieces. My dish is where I had the most issues, I ordered the grilled mahi-mahi. I was not pleased with really any part of it, the description was completely different to what I was looking at on my plate. I knew this would be the case unfortunately when I saw it on the chefs counter as well. My fish felt more like a poach, and it was sitting atop guacamole. That was weird. The entrée boasted papaya, avocado, tomato, cilantro and honey. All the exciting components seemed to be mixed in with the guac, and the honey was drizzled around the fish. I understand why it was done this way, and it's effectiveness in busy hours; but if that's how the dish is going to be prepared it should be described more accurately. I've worked in the food industry for ten years, and I have also been fortunate enough to experience many kinds of restaurants, food preparation, and artistry. I know this place could be something special, there are some incredible and creative ideas here. The ambiance was beautiful, but the acoustics make it very loud. I'm sure some like this place, but not I. Really expensive for Greensboro. To me it seemed like a place to show off you can spend a lot on a meal. The $16 smoked old fashioned with a large cube of ice with an orange slices and a stick of cinnamon in were interesting, but not worth it for me. My Mahi was on the dry side, and came only with puréed avocados. The salad looked good. Portions were small. Service was excellent, as I would expect at these prices. I have not seen anywhere before when they offer to add a tip, 30%, 25%, or 20%. That seems pushing it a little more. Ambience was nice looking, but it was so loud I had trouble hearing the people next to me, and this day was only about 60% full. . read more

Great spot in GSO. Rotating menu with different flavors around the world. Had been here few times and food has been great every time. Drinks are on spot and great bourbon selection. Waiters are very friendly and attentive. They have live music (Jazz), which is awesome, cool vibe. This place gets two and a half stars because the service was actually very good. also the butternut squash soup was good. But that's it. The shrimp risotto was overcooked and tough and the chocolate cake was microwaved for too long and had to be cut with a steak knife. Speaking of steak, the ribeye I ordered was hands down the WORST steak I've ever had at any restaurant. it looked great and was cooked properly, but it was littered with gristle. I mean every single bite I tried from that steak was a stringy, chewy, inedible waste of time. The manager was very nice and understanding, and said he'd take it off my bill. Which I guess he did, but we still ended up paying $166 for some tough shrimp and a few glasses of mediocre Spanish wine. Not going back. read more

Service was good! Def. overpriced and not impressed by any of it. My cocktail was mainly mango juice and the wagyu sliders came out cold.
