The food was delicious. I've always wanted to try African Cuisine. So what's on the plate? Stewed goat, rice, egusi and fufu. Make sure you wash ya hands before eating. No utensils required. The business was so nice. She was out of the ginger tea I ordered and she told me it will be awhile. So I didn't mind waiting. Everything was fresh! So if ya in the area, stop by and give it a try!!!!!

Top left - yellow rice Top right - egusi Bottom - curry/jerk chicken

Not your typical go in and sit down restaurant, never really ordered from a business such as this one. You order online then go into a building that has other restaurants and it's all online orders I believe. It's a cool, clean and nice building with good and fast staff. I tried fufu with egusi and curry/jerk chicken because I've been seeing it on TikTok and stuff and thought it looked great so I been wanting to try it for a minute. Thankfully I was recommended to African sisters by a coworker and it is super delicious. I don't have anything to compare it to so idk about other places but for my first ever experience it was super delicious. I'll definitely be back multiple times lol.

Horrible food! Disgustingly dirty! Food hard and over cooked and they pay little attention to sanitation! I will never ever eat here again.

I happen to stumble across their launch announcement on Facebook and made it my business to go and give it a try. As an African American with ZERO cultural ties to my ancestral home, I've been super eager to try West African cuisine. African Avenue is a bright orange food truck that sits next to the McDonald's on the Perimeter of Hanes Mall. There's safe and easy access with plenty of parking. I approached the food truck and was greeted by a friendly lady. They have a small menu, but his is a plus for me as it leaves less room for me to be indecisive! I ordered a few things. A meat pie, Bissop, and the Jollof (red rice) and Goat that's served with a side of fried plantain. The meat pie had a sweet and flaky crust. It was filled with seasoned ground meat (unsure what kind) potatoes, and carrots. It was very flaky and easy to eat. It was delicious. The Bissop is a Hibiscus drink. It wasn't as sweet as Sorrel, but was spiced and ginger forward. It was refreshing. The Jollof rice was spicy and flavorful. EVERY grain of rice had absorbed the tomatobase and seasonings. The GOAT was tender and seasoned well. The plantain was semi sweet. Overall a great dish. It only took about 4 minutes to receive my food. I waited until I got home to eat because there's no seating and I had my toddler in the car. The food was cold by the time I arrived and it was only a 15 minute drive. I can't wait to go back to try the Eguisi and pounded yam! Reasonable prices and great portions! Go check them out and try something new!!

If you're planning to eat there, just know the food isn't fast--it's made fresh to order, so expect a little wait, but it's worth it for hot, quality meals. My go-to is the egusi with chicken and a side of pounded yam. I'll also switch it up with their vegetable soup and pounded yam, which is always a good choice. I've tried the jollof rice as well--I'd give it about a 7/10. It's solid, especially with chicken, and I recommend asking for a little extra red sauce or gravy to take it up a notch. Overall, the food is consistently good when I order delivery. One thing to watch for--they've occasionally forgotten my extra pounded yam, so double-check your order before settling in. I can't speak on the dine-in service or ambiance yet, but based on the food alone, I'd definitely recommend them.

Stopped in for a weekday lunch and the person behind the counter was really nice. The place was clean and bright with an open air feel to it. I ordered an Egusi with Chicken and Fufu. Let's go through what all this is, but first why the 3.5 rating...the chicken. This is supposed to be fall off the bone that is fresh and stewed in the sauces. Great flavor for sure, but it was very tough. The plastic knife given had trouble cutting it. You want to think fall off the bone meat, this wasn't it. Not sure if I came in on a bad rotation where they reheated chicken from earlier or the night before, but it did not taste fresh as you'd expect. Ok now to the good stuff... Egusi: this is the main flavor, listed as a soup on the menu but more like a stew instead. It's nutty and hearty with 5 star flavor and spices. This thing rocked! Fufu: this as a mild and soft starch that goes with it all. Almost like a softer consistency gnocchi or some other potato/noodle combo. Not much to it by itself honestly, but man, what a great flavor bomb when you take a piece of it and dunk it in that amazing egusi. Maybe on a day with fresh and tender chicken, the trifecta would be complete: soft and chewy fufu + rich and nutty egusi + fall off the bone tender chicken. Unfortunately today the 3rd piece was missing.

The owner and staff were tremendously kind and greeted us with warm smiles. I must add, it is a bit pricey. I ordered takeout from Elle Et Moi, which was chicken egusi, yam fufu, and jollof rice. It came as a combo. The egusi was delicious, absolute perfection. Slighly spicy and very generous with the chicken. I didn't know what to expect it to taste like, but it far exceeded my expections. The portion was generous. The jollof rice was very tasty. A bit of a kick and seasoned very well. I really enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't like was the fufu. I wanted to like it, but the texture was off. It didn't pinch off and roll around in my fingers like I've seen, where I make the little indentation to scoop up the soup. It was kind of dry and crumbly. Maybe it was warmed for too long and overcooked or something. I'll try again next time, and maybe try the plaintain version next. I'll definitely be back and look forward to trying other dishes!

This is a really great way to get some delicious global cuisine while supporting local restaurants close to Franklin St. (as a side note, it has it's own parking lot too, so you don't have to pay or search for parking along Franklin St. Always a good thing! They also have a really nice patio area).

And when I last lived in Durham 30+ years ago, having Ethiopian on Main Street Durham was unimaginable. But Durham on so many levels is a completely different universe. Goorsha is a very pleasant small dining room off a welcoming bar area when you come in. It was overcast and cold this early March day but the outside dining must be lovely later in the spring. We had a very helpful waitress answer a few questions and the food came quickly. The Sambusa appetizer should have perhaps taken a bit longer. The edges were crisp and tasty as was the Deko sauce it came with. But the center was still a bit cold so a bit more time was needed. I wanted beef tibs and went with the Zilzil tibs knowing there would be less sauce and danger of staining my work clothes. They were plentiful, well-cooked if not powerfully seasoned. They were quick to bring ample powered pepper so I could give it some kick dipping each injera enveloped bite for some added heat. The winner was my vegetarian dining companion who went with the very flexible pick three from many vegetarian options. They were a distinct yet complimentary troika of richly favored dishes. At least for lunch, Goorsha goes with individual plates rather than the traditional round platter family style so familiar in Ethiopian cuisine. It definitely worked for us given one of us was a vegetarian and the other all tibs all day. Definitely very glad to see it just across the street from Brightleaf Square and one of the earliest areas converted from tobacco warehouses to fashionable eateries. Glad it is part of the Durham eating scene.
