Dixon's Jamaican Taste, my daughter's favorite birthday spot.

I love this place. The food is always fresh and delicious. The service is friendly, and the restaurant just feels good to hang out in. This has become a regular lunch tradition with my daughter, especially as a place she likes to go for her birthdays (four years in a row!). And the food is a really good value. Jerk chicken and two sides for $8 at lunch is unbeatable!

It took Kingston native, Kern Dixon, less than 2 years after he began operating his food truck to open his brick and mortar place on S. Church Street. The restaurant has built a solid clientele, but not all have come away pleased with their experience, and I'm in that camp. I've tried the food here three times now, and it has been a real hit or miss situation, both as to food and service quality. I have tried the Oxtail (3times), Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken, rice and peas, and cabbage.! The Oxtail was excellent the first time, not quite as good the second (not as flavorful, less tender), and the last time it simply was not good - tough, bland! The Curry Chicken had very good flavor, but was full of small bones, no fun picking them out, dangerous as well. The Curried Goat was very. very good ~ I would definitely try this dish again. The Jerk Chicken was simply awesome, full of flavor and very tender - highly recommend. The Cabbage was excellent on 2 visits and dull and bland on the other - seemed like it was held over from a previous day'. The service is just more hit and miss, with more miss than hit. The time for food to come out of the kitchen is always long - for me the shortest was 45 minutes, while one was an hour and 10 minutes. Too many ifs and buts here for me, I'll not return.

I was in town for the evening, and wanted to have something good to eat and my cousins recommended this spot! It was a really great choice. I enjoyed the Jerk Chicken plate. The rice and peas were flavorful and not dry. The mac and cheese was just ok. The plantains were ok too. Nothing against their style of preparation, but I've had better. The brown stew chicken was delicious too. I would definitely recommend trying it out, and I will be back!

When I first arrived around 5/530 pm a few customers were inside and by the time I ordered and sat down and waited on my food it got packed with a line. Only thing is they need to update there menu prices the side of chicken said 6$ and she charged me 9$ and had a lil attitude when I asked about it but hey when the food is good I can take a lil attitude and the man I'm guessing either a manager or the owner stepped in and kinda smoothed it out with his words. Cause I almost was ready to get it started cause that old lady in the front just gives off angry black women like she was tired of being there. Anywho I got a large curry goat plate with rice an peas steamed cabbage and Mac. With a side of jerk chicken and extra jerk sauce and a beef patty. Everything was great. I even stopped at the hair store and dollar tree before I ate my food in my truck and it was still hot and fresh. No complaints everything was great and the jerk chicken had that slice I needed and that beef patty was fresh soft and flaky when most times ppl let them sit all day and they get hard i at it while driving to the store. I would give it an 8/10 on the food and 5/10 on the customer service and on the wait w/ how busy it was I'll give it an 8.5/10 I only waited about 10 not more the. 15 mins for my food which isn't bad at all especially since it was busy and they had people calling in as well.

The chicken is dark meat served on the bone - and by on the bone, I mean falling off the bone, it's so tender and moist. There are also some carrots and potato bits in the gravy, and I would happily eat a whole bowl of just those. The rice and peas (beans) were perfectly cooked. When I ordered through the Toast tab screens they have set up, it gave the option of indicating whether and how much gravy you'd like on the rice. I did the standard amount, which I think is just right, as the rice balances out the saltiness of the gravy. The mac & cheese was also really good - creamy, with some chewy baked cheese crust, and a hint of tanginess. The large portion was a ton of food. I shared my plate with my toddler, who loved the chicken, and it would be enough for at least one more meal. I also got a chicken patty, which had a curried chicken filling that brought a bit of heat. Too spicy for little kids, but not so spicy that I was hurting from eating it. We ate in the restaurant, which is clean with several tables. It's counter service, and it seems like they pack everything as if it's to go, even if you dine in. For folks with kids, they do have a single high chair. I don't remember seeing a changing table in the ladies room.

We don't really know much about authentic Jamaican food so we don't have anything to compare it to but we expected the flavors to be a little bolder and thought the jerk chicken would be spicy. The oxtail was very mild and while the jerk chicken had good flavor, it wasn't spicy. We did get the last order of jerk chicken so maybe that affected the quality but it was mostly bone and we didn't get much meat. We also felt it was a little overpriced for what we received. Since we're not familiar with Jamaican food, we can't really say whether it was good or bad overall. It just wasn't quite what we expected.

This Jamaican spot has been quietly serving up bold, authentic flavors, and if you haven't tried their beef patty yet, you're seriously missing out. The patty? Absolutely to die for. The crust is golden, flaky, and buttery with just the right amount of bite. Inside, the filling is rich, savory, and perfectly spiced--warm with Scotch bonnet heat but balanced so the flavors shine through. It's the kind of snack that makes you wish you'd ordered two... or three. Their stewed chicken also deserves a shoutout. Tender, falling-off-the-bone meat simmered in a deep, flavorful brown gravy--it's comfort food with Caribbean soul. Paired with rice and peas and a side of cabbage, it's the kind of plate that satisfies on every level. The vibe has always been low-key and welcoming, and with the move closer to Stratford, it's bound to attract even more fans. If you're in the area and craving something bold, homemade, and straight from the islands, this place needs to be on your radar.
