So glad we found Camino Real for dinner tonight. The location is very unassuming, but once you walk in it feels like the entire neighborhood is there. One of the things I love the most about this restaurant is they use big glasses for water. We had someone checking on the table every 5 minutes or so, but not overbearing. Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Started off with a refreshing Margarita on the rocks and a bowl of Queso with the complimentary chips and salsa. The Margarita was delicious and the Queso was rich, creamy and had jalapeños, onions and tomatoes in it...very tasty. I ordered the Cheese Enchilada Plate. Which had two Cheese Enchiladas loaded with creamy cheese in corn tortillas, smoothed in cheese with onions on top, Mexican rice and creamy refried beans. Everything was seasoned to perfection and delicious. The service in this restaurant was amazing. I'm not sure if this is a family owned business or not, but they sure acted like it. We barely got seated before someone was bringing us menus, chips and salsa and taking our drink orders. Our drinks and food were brought out promptly and piping hot. Every person in this place was doing a multitude of tasks. Taking orders, bringing out the drinks, bringing out the food, refilling the drinks, chips and salsa, busing the tables and so on. No one person had just one job...everyone chipped in doing whatever was needed. Everyone made you feel welcome and appreciated. That's why I was wondering if it was family owned. The service was impressive. The atmosphere was upbeat and pleasant...very nice. The restaurant has plenty of seating. It's very clean. Has a nice ambiance. A nice, predictable experience. Tortilla soup was out, but I had heard good things. We were with a regular who orders mini carnitas tacos regularly and praised them, although our order was a bit dry. Super fast service and all team members were helping each other to ensure everyone was taken care of. We didn't take the refill on chips and salsa because the menu listed these would be additional cost, which felt strange and that they should just bake in that super minimal cost to the existing prices. This past weekend my wife and I were running errands and decided to lunch at one of our local haunts...Camino Real serves great food whether for breakfast lunch or dinner! We went in for lunch were seated quickly by the super friendly server and promptly asked for our drink order. While we decided on what we were going to eat another helpful face brought out complimentary chips and salsa something never expected but always appreciated when it happens. They were fresh chips and great flavorful salsa that was not too spicy at all! The place is cozy with themed decorations and they do have a side room for overflow or private parties, overall the place was clean and inviting! I ordered the carne guisada plate with flour tortillas beans and rice. The carne guisada was so tender and the sauce was tasty with some veggies in it. The beans and rice were both great compliments to the dish. My wife went for the enchiladas suizas and the sauce was creamy and enchiladas were stuff with tender shredded chicken. Her beans and rice were like mine beans hot and not too salty with fluffy Mexican rice! Over all we were completely satisfied with our food and look to returning to try other items from the large menu! This restaurant has been here forever. It's the real deal if you're looking for delicious and inexpensive food. The decor is a little outdated, but the food did not disappoint. They bring you some chips and salsa and the chips taste really homemade and it's corn, which means that I could eat them since I'm GF. Salsa was fresh and spicy. For main we had steak and eggs and camarones Al carbon. They are both very big dishes to the point that I thought I would not be able to finish my plate, but it was so good! As you can see in the pictures there was no shortage of shrimp. They were a bit overcooked, but the flavor was there and I really loved the char. For the price, quality, and service, this place can't be beat! We were looking for a new Tex Mex spot to go to after the old one near us shut down and have been back several times since. Located near the Big Lots with a huge neon sign that can't be missed. It's a seat-yourself situation, with two rooms side-by-side. Waitresses are always quick and friendly, we always see the same ladies working here. They never forget to refill our water or bring us anything else we ask for. This place has tons of regular customers, too, always a good sign! They have TVs and a bar as well for anyone wanting to stop for a drink or catch a game. The margaritas are pretty good. Salsa is DELICIOUS. The chips that come with it are thick and taste homemade. We love coming here for breakfast after a long night out LOL! There's only a $1 fee to order breakfast after the cutoff time, so feel free to catch those extra zzz's. The omelet with bacon is just *chef's kiss* The onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes inside have such a nice grilled flavor I could never accomplish at home. Chilaquiles are also great! We've been regulars here for over a decade, but our breakfast this morning was a major disappointment. Despite the restaurant being quiet, my migas taco arrived ice-cold. When I finally caught a server's attention to replace it, there was no apology--and the second taco was just as cold as the first. I eventually had to ask to have it removed from the bill. We ordered take out so I can't comment on ambiance. Service was competent. We ordered sides of guacamole, and pico de gallo. They included 1/2 C of their salsa roja. The guac was not seasoned beyond S&P and didn't have tons of onion, tomato or cilantro. I liked that it was pretty much pure avocado. I loved the pico de gallo because it was made with equal parts tomato, onion, and Serrano with just a wee bit of cilantro. They included an almost full gallon zip of very nice chips! We split the chicken flautas and the chicken enchiladas suiza. The flautas were large and well stuffed with chicken but just a touch dry. The suiza sauce was delicious! I liked both entrees. One of my go-to Mexican food spots in Austin. Coming from San Marcos, we had tons of awesome Mexican food joints like this one (with awesome prices). But moving to austin, these are far and in between. Camino real is one of the few places I've found with amazing food and amazing prices. Fajita dinner for 2? Expect an enormous plate of meat for under 25$ (similar places charge 40+ for way less food). Margarita??? Get an XL for under 7-8$ (10-15 at comparable spots). Get what Im saying??? It's BANG for your BUCK. The women who work here also rock, they waste no time in getting your chips/salsa, drinks, and food to you ASAP. I get great service here every time, and I love that when your ready to pay you just walk to the front- goodbye are the days of waving down your waitress for 20 minutes to get a check! If you insist on eating indoors during the pandemic - You are not going to do better on safety than Camino Real. These people are doing everything humanly possible to prevent their staff and their customers from dying from coronavirus. Social distancing is extremely aggressive with the entire middle of the restaurant closed off and space barriers inserted between the side-wall tables. Wiping down with antiseptic is mandatory upon entering the establishment. You go to sign your credit card check and the pens have been wiped down with antiseptic and are presented on a paper towel drenched in antiseptic. Past reviews of this place were mixed - with some people loving it, and some people complaining about cleanliness. Well there is nothing like the threat of everybody dying of a fatal disease to reinstall fundamental values of hygiene. Nowadays the place is cleaner than your house. * * * How is the food? Yelpers either love or hate the food. I am right in the middle. I ordered a large menudo. That menudo had twice to three times the amount of tripe you usually get in a bowl of menudo. In terms of tripe for dollar, give Camino Real a medal. How good was the menudo in terms of taste? Hmmm. er .... Well, I like tripe and I got a lot of it. The soup itself was pretty indifferent. Tortillas are eminently respectable. * * * Often when people are giving a backhanded compliment to a restaurant, They say "It Won't Kill You." With all the antiseptic they are currently using at Camino Real, I can guarantee that Camino will not kill you. You might even do well here.
