I've been going to Camino Real for many, many years, but this past Sunday October 15th the staff and cooks outdid themselves. We planned a party for my 36 year old son one day before the event. There were 34 adults and kids there, and Camino pulled it off without a hitch. They were patient, attentive, friendly, and on the top of their game. I give Camino Real an enthusiastic and positive three stars. This is good, solid Tex Mex, nothing more, nothing less. The best part: Dinner plates here are likely to cost a couple dollars less than they would at similar Tex Mex places. A solid combo plate for under ten bucks? Yes, indeed, and sign me up! The menu is extensive but with few surprises. The Tex Mex cheese enchiladas with chili gravy have a flavor profile that hints at those of my very favorite examples. My crunchy taco had generous filling with good flavor, if a bit greasy. A bean-and-cheese chalupa was everything it should be. Rice and beans are solid accompaniments. My girlfriend's chicken flautas may have been the biggest star of our meal - you won't mistake these for the frozen, pre-made ones you'll find at some places. Dip them in the guacamole and sour cream that comes with them and find your happy place. If you opt to include the optional chili con queso you may encounter some minor disappointment, as it is decidedly on the thin side, though with good flavor. I've only experienced Camino Real via takeout due to the pandemic. It's certainly possible that a dine-in visit in the future could push my assessment up to four stars, and I look forward to testing that out when things get a bit closer to normal. So, to recap: Solid Tex Mex food at prices a bit below those of their worthy peers along the 183 corridor. Cheese enchiladas and chicken flautas get special praise. ¡Salud! read more

This place is always reliable and is a great go to for last minute food, or a lazy night when you don't want to cook. The service is always good, and so is the food. This place is lacking in aesthetics, but the lack of ambience is overcome by friendly staff and good, inexpensive food. The chicken fajita nachos rock, as do the fajitas themselves. DH and I ate here this week. I had Enchiladas Suisas. The chicken within the enchiladas was moist and juicy and very "chicken-y". I've had my fair share of dry, tasteless chicken in some of the much higher priced south of the border restaurants. It was a delicious lunch and super affordable. The staff were friendly and the vibe was lighthearted and efficient. We will be back again and again. We live nearby, which is great, but I'd take a drive if i had to to eat here again. NOTE: This is not fancy. It's in a strip mall that has several very non-fussy but delicious restaurants in it. The only hiccup we had (and it was a very small one) was I had to flag down a server to bring a go container. I wasn't about to leave any of my oversized meal behind! Great salsa. Wow this is some of the best Mexican food I've had in Austin. Incredibly fresh food and exceptional service. My husband and I had a small queso appetizer and chicken and beef fajitas for two. The fajitas were hot and seasoned and cooked perfectly. Our food arrived within the first 15 minutes of sitting down. We also made it in time for happy hour, which have prices you can't beat. $3.50 for a giant margarita? Yes please. The margs were also fresh and tasted great. No crappy syrup in sight. Lastly, the service was impeccable. Several wait staff came to check on us throughout the meal and replenished our waters, chips, salsa and napkins without needing to ask. Service was bad finished my drink and i never got a refill, the queso fundido has a bad taste if the chorizo homemade they need a better recipe cause that got me sick for 3 days, not too much selection to choose, and the the sweet tea was great. Wow, this restaurant has gone downhill. I previously gave these guys 5 stars and stated it was my new favorite Mexican restaurant. We arrived on a Sunday AM at 815 (they open at 8AM) and waited until 830 for them to unlock the door. We sat in our regular booth and noted that the seats and table was sticky. Our menus had dried food on them as well. Looking around we both noticed that this venue has gone from acceptable dive to dirty. Both of our Mexican breakfast plates were bland with minimal taste. I remarked that for a quarter of the price we could have had delicious tacos across the street. Not sure what happened but we will not entertain returning here until they clean up their act. read more

To finish it off, as we were standing in line to pay, we noticed one of the waiters fill up a cup with ice and head straight to the little sink that's right next to the register and fill it up with tap water (mind you the sink was full of dirty cups). Popped in here prior to a dinner engagement to grab a quick drink and a bite to curb the hunger a bit. Upon walking into the place, the aroma being delivered from the kitchen was fantastic. Unfortunately, that was the only highlight. The food was mediocre at best. We ordered a two enchilada plate and noticed that this was another location with plastic looking cheese. Rice was good, refried beans were room temperature with a slight strange taste. The salsa delivered with the chips was extremely mild. Places like this would never hit my recommendation list. My biggest issues were that the packaging for to-go orders is horrible! My beans spilled out all over the bag. The bigger issue was I felt the employee taking my order was not very friendly. It was my first time there and she seemed annoyed when I asked her some questions about the menu. The inside of the restaurant is nothing to write home about. It could use some cleaning and a better system for keeping ice. They had it in a cooler sitting on top of a chair. My husband and I were on the north side of town and needed a bite to eat, so what else to do but head to Yelp! since we weren't familiar with the area. The restaurant itself is in a strip mall next to several other businesses. The place was clean and there was no hostess so we took a seat at one of the empty booths. A server came over right away and took our drink order. After our drinks came, we got queso as an appetizer and placed our order for lunch. We had ordered the small queso but it came out in such a big bowl that I was certain in was a large! I asked the lady confirmed it was a small - the more queso the better I guess! My husband had the tacos and I had one of the combination plates. The food was pretty good to say the least. I wasn't crazy about the sauce on my enchilada but everything else was tasty. Compared to some, I'm a noob at Camino Real. But growing up in San Antonio, I feel like I've been coming to Camino Real my whole life, as it reminds me of the old stompin' grounds. Sometimes you find a place just for breakfast tacos. For us, that's Camino Real. When my wife had to go gluten free, CR is the place where she first embraced breakfast tacos on corn tortillas (poor thing!). The key to a good breakfast taco experience is the salsa. And I've never been disappointed with the salsa offering at CR. You can tell it's home made because it's clearly the same recipe, but sometimes it's hotter than others. But it has always tasted fresh. Sometimes you find a place just for dinner. When we want an oozy plate of cheesy goodness, CR is what we crave. We've made a habit of Wednesdays, because happy-hour-all-night-Wednesday can bring us dinner for two and a drink or so for the low $20s. We're often shocked with how good the frozen margs are, for so cheap. They can compare easily to the $6.50+ drinks at other places. The fajitas-for-two served on a sizzling platter are half the price as errr, a place you would be "Loopy" to wait an hour to be seated at. Sure, it'll never be the hip place to hang. It's your neighborhood Tex-Mex diner. The waitresses are all very sweet to us, and friendly. You pick your own table, and pay at the register. The food always comes out fast. The tube tv (no large flat-panel here) seems to have some color issues, as it plays the news non-stop. The decor includes some frightening pinatas, and a general hodgepodge of "artistic" touches. CR is just the way it should be. If yelp allowed 1/2 stars, this would be a solid 4 1/2. Cause the chips aren't my fave. Though that might be a good thing, because we never fail to need a basket refill, so we'd probably bust if we ate any more... But since I'm forced to full star ratings, CR, you get 5*s from me. My long-distance boyfriend, Bruce Springsteen, made me salsa last night, and it was pathetic. Bland. Flavorless, except for the overpowering 5-lbs' worth of cilantro. I made him feel badly for it. Tonight, I was watching Bridget Jones' Diary on TV, and the alcohol-loving characters made me desire alcohol myself. This was good. Yes really good. I had two breakfast tacos to go as I had to sit in the car and listen to a phone conference. While I was waiting for my order, I saw some magnificent breakfast plates being carried past me. I did not notice the more unusual items like lingua or tripas on the menu, but I could have missed that. Very loyal long time customers from conversations I heard. Yelp took us to a great place today, or at least the reviews did. The complimentary chips and salsa got us headed in the right direction...chips are average but the salsa for me was exemplary...tasty with some bite. The lunch menu combo plate with one enchilada, a beef crispy taco and guacamole and rice and beans was enjoyed by my wife...with a large assist from me!! I had and shared one bite of carne guisada with her, hey!, that's all she wanted and I was glad, the carne plate off the regular menu was tasty and tender, great refried beans and rice and the flour tortillas were very good. Service was very good, we'll definitely return when we're on this side of town.....this is located in a strip center with a lot of good places to eat, from coffee and cupcakes to Cajun food too. read more

I arrived at Camino Real for a post-birthday luncheon. After many failed efforts, my schedule finally matched up with Catherine T's and I finally understand what she's been saying. Many stories I've heard of the delectable food that Camino Real serves up, but only now do I believe it. The cheese enchiladas are what I ordered, along with an iced tea and one of their Mexican martinis. The quality of the salsa, admittedly, varied during the course of our meal. It started off okay, but the following servings were WAY better than "okay." The cheese enchiladas? I can honestly say I haven't had better, and I routinely order them at tex-mex establishments. My mexican martini didn't strike me as being memorable, but those tend to be kind of shaky anywhere you go. The service is both pleasant and attentive. It's a place you can easily pass by, but it's a place you need to be going to. I can't wait for my next visit. read more

This review is based solely on breakfast. The breakfast tacos here are great. Made to order goodness, good size, and generously filled. My favorites are the potato and egg (always a classic, potatos are nicely cooked, MAYBE could be a hair crisper) and the bacon and egg. I like that they use thick cut bacon instead of those little wimpy ass flimsy pieces some other places use. The chorizo and egg taco is a little less successful; the chorizo is pretty mild and not well spiced. The migas here are OKAY. In fact I don't remember much about them so they obviously didn't leave much of an impact on me. Their salsa is better than average. Maybe a tad heavy on the black pepper for my taste, but fresh and goes well with the tacos. Nice place to have in northwest Austin for cheap, filling breakfast. read more
