We pulled off at the Muncie exit with no real plan. We quickly decided to follow the roar to Cammack Station and...wow! The decor was delightful, the food was wonderful (I had the tenderloin sandwich with lettuce, tomato, pickles and thousand island...amazing!). I'm in a tenderloin state of mind of late. Me and Pops find ourselves back at Cammack Station. A busy Sunday lunch, but tables available. Lots of people getting ice cream and their hand dipped, old fashioned mixed milk shakes. Remember - this is not really a restaurant - this is an ice cream shop that also serves food. We saunter to the counter and quickly place our orders for 2 tenderloins tricked out with everything and a shared side of onion rings. One of these days I'll work over the menu - today is not the day. Our loins arrive sizzling hot - crispy, steamy porcine goodness. Thankfully not skimping on pickles, onions, tomato or leaf lettuce. Pops pronounces (stealing another moniker): it's a sandwich that eats like a meal! Slather it in mustard at the table - kick back and watch Aunt Bee on the screen loop - and realize this is what the good ol days looked like in living color - not black and white. I've been here several times and I always question myself, "Did I turn on the right road?" Yep. South on 600W from 332 (McGalliard), cross the tracks, turn back to the east - and drive 60 years into history. Yum. Our shared onion rings were HOT, fresh and barely salted - though easily fixed at the table. Served with a side of ranch (who dips rings in ranch? - use mustard people). Best tenderloin award? Doubtful, but a very good entree from an ice cream shoppe. I'm doubtful that the loin was tenderized and breaded onsite. It wasn't beaten to a paper thickness - had a nice body and chew to it and the breading was fairly light. It's definitely a tenderloin - NOT a Pete's Pride production pork fritter either. Where does a gal from Hawaii go for vacation? Muncie, IN, of course! The in-laws live in Muncie and grandma took me to Cammack Station. The decor from the outside was super cute, it looked like I lived in a simpler time. Inside, it was really homey and I've never been to a place like it before, considering I've lived in an international city all my life. I told the girl behind the counter to make me her favorite thing on the menu, which she said was the chicken sandwich. It was THE BEST chicken sandwich I've ever had. After lunch, the hubs and I met up with one of his old high school teachers and we just HAD to go back that same day to try their milkshakes. Chocolate and mint chocolate chip...just as awesome as their sandwich. Now I crave this place in the middle of the night. Every time that I make it back to Indiana, one of my very first stops is always Cammack Station. They make good old fashioned comfort food the way that your grandmother would. And they do an awesome job of it! The milkshakes here CANNOT be beat. My only complaint is that they don't always have chili, even though its always on the menu. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) We've been here several times. It's a destination when we're riding our motorcycles as they have the best Cokes with vanilla, cherry and chocolate syrup ever! (And crunchy ice.) They have two separate areas for grill food and ice cream. Their hours are limited during the winter, so check before you go. (Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays Winter Hours.) My date got the fried bologna sandwich! A blast from the past. He got a tasty side of fried mushrooms and then a chocolate Coke. I had the burger fully dressed and a side of tasty onion rings with honey mustard sauce. We were definitely full. Free refills on the soft drinks. It's not over the top food, but the ambiance of the place is a walk down memory lane if you're old! Old gas pumps as this is a former gas station. Andy Griffith playing on the "TV" in a loop and old signs, bottles, steering wheels, a juke box--it's like going into a museum minus the dust. We were remarking how clean it was and how it must be tough to dust all the memorabilia. As we were leaving we spied our HS English teacher (retired) who was there with friends. We stopped to chat and that's the atmosphere here--friendly and a good place to meet friends. It's a little off the beaten path, but worth going to for a fun destination. (Just outside Muncie, Indiana.) Try the tenderloin, the fried mushrooms and if you love Cherry (or Vanilla or Chocolate) Coke, definitely get one. Cammack Station is a really nice addition to the Muncie/Yorktown area. I love how they have regentrified the old Cammack Station and turned it into something really cool. The food choices are sandwiches and salads that you might expect to find at a Soda Fountain back in the day. I had the grilled tenderloin sandwich, which I enjoyed and my husband liked his burger. The fries are real and tasted great. Next to the fountain drinks they offer cherry, vanilla and chocolate syrup to mix into your drink as you like. I made a vanilla coke, which was delicious. My husband and son were pleased to find Red Cream soda as an offering. The service was quick and friendly. If you are up in the Muncie area, it is worth a trip out to Cammack. Last 2 trips here have been very disappointing. A few weeks ago we went there for shakes. Ordered 2 small shakes. There were maybe 1-1/2 cups in each cup and it was EXTREMELY thin. We used to get the shakes and you had to eat them with a spoon because you couldn't get the shake through a straw. The worst part was we were charged over $12.00 for them. A couple of weeks ago we ordered hot fudge sundaes. One of the sundaes didn't even have hot fudge on it. They had just squirted some chocolate syrup on top of the whipped cream. I took it back and they did add some hot fudge but come on!!!!! I think the problem is the training seems to be lacking and it is especially bad when there is no adult behind the counter, which is most of the time. For a trip into the past with great food, awesome service, and a great value then stop off the beaten path and travel to historic Yorktown to the Cammack Station. The restaurant is housed in a remodeled filling station and inside nostalgia of the 40s, 50s, and early 60s is present throughout. Aside from the great decor, the service-the staff are so very friendly and for those who have never been (like us) they helped to explain their menu which features Hoosier favorites as well as American cuisine. We had the best experience. My friend and I had the breaded tenderloin on a brioche bun and it was unlike any tenderloin I have ever had. It was not like the ones at the fair. It was a lean, tender, and juicy piece of meat that was hand breaded the way someone's grandma probably did it back in the day. The kids had a kids meal that included a hamburger, tater tots, and a fruit with the choice of a small drink or choice of milk. This place featured beverages such as old timey root beer and marshmallow coke. Afterwards we had dessert and let me say it was hard to choose. The Strawberry Shortcakes are HUGE and big enough for two. The berries are not soaked in sugar water or some fake gel-they are real, ripe, and sweet berries with a homemade cake with whipped cream.
