    Takoyaki
    Tori E.

Can we take a moment and give a round of applause to this amazing establishment, please? I mean really! Bravo to the chefs, the server we had tonight & the owner/manager! I thought my son and I had found the best sushi restaurant in the midlands before, until we ate dinner here tonight. If I could, I would give this dining experience 10 stars. Everything was perfect. Camon is a little hole in the wall restaurant that exudes an air of Japanese tranquility. From the moment you open the sliding door, to being served a cup of hot green tea after you are seated, this place just feels like a true authentic Japanese restaurant should feel. As my son put it, "it's a vibe in here." The young lady who served us tonight was pleasant, soft spoken, polite and attentive (and not in an annoying way kind of attentive). We began with the takoyaki. Oh my word! The way it melted in my mouth with all the flavors and textures was astonishing. My son took one bite and it was literally eye opening for him. It was his first time trying takoyaki and he loved it. I almost wish I had not let this be his first one because I fear that now, none of the others will ever compare. That's how good it was! Then, we ordered some sashimi, the dragon special and nigiri. All of it was superb!! We had to have more. We ordered a spicy tuna roll, some steamed shrimp shumai and mochi for dessert. Again, it was all a superb!

Finally! Legit sushi! This place is definitely getting another visit. Since moving to the midlands it's been tough finding good sushi. Everyone seems to recommend someplace that ends up disappointing. This place hit it out the park. The sushi rolls were good sizes, the fish fresh and buttery texture. Order more than you are expecting to eat because they can take a while to complete orders. There are Plenty of interesting items on the menu. Worth my time and money! The service was traditional and professional and the ambiance was pleasant and peaceful.

So, So, Sushi. Lovely indoor seating area with a welcoming environment. Staff was friendly although not too accommodating. For this trip we sat at the sushi bar thinking service would be quick ... wrong were we. Servers nor sushi chefs paid us much attention. While prices were reasonable sushi did not pack home the same fresh flavors found out others. Camon has some signature rolls as well as your standard options. I ordered the Columbia roll which menu said was to be include, omelet, shrimp, imitation crab, avocado, eel, and cucumbers. Sadly I found the roll to be less of the aforementioned and heavy on rice. I also ordered miso soup which sadly never came :( I will give it another try, perhaps for there Happy Hour which runs M-F until 6:30.

Camon Japanese restaurant is definitely an unassuming and small eatery, but it's punching way above its weight class! The sushi here is top-notch and I would come here again weekly if I was local. Located in Downtown Columbia near USC, they boast some of the finest sushi around. Every type we had was mouth-watering. Our favorite by far was the Camon II roll and the salmon nigiri. Absolutely divine flavors and so fresh. Another top contender was the Dragon roll with crispy fried eel. What made this experience even greater was the intimate setting with calming music and an expert waitstaff. Our server gave us many recommendations and all of them were good and the chef himself gave some insight as to why he prepares his dishes this way. I can't wait to come back and sip some green tea while I devour more sushi! Follow me on Instagram @ GullahEatsCHS

Veggie/Shrimp tempura, the lifesaver roll, the Camon II roll, and cold soba dish

This place has such a cute atmosphere, welcoming you with a sliding door and warm lighting. Service was very accommodating as well. I had the Lifesaver roll and the Camon II roll, my friend had the cold soba, and we shared the veggie/shrimp tempura. It was all delicious and we will definitely be back when we're in Columbia!

California rolls with masago dumped on top.
    CeMCat S.

2 orders of California rolls. 2 trips. I had to go back because they didn't put extra masago. When I returned, instead of remaking it, he just dumped the masago on top of the rolls. I called to complain about this to the owner, who just said. "I'm sorry about that." No offer to refund the money OR offer free rolls the next time. I have been a steady customer of Camon since I moved here in 2019. The food is overpriced but fine. Apparently, they don't care if they provide good customer service. Camon has just lost a customer.

Food was sooo delicious!!! It was my first time ever having Japanese curry and it definitely met my expectations of what I thought it would taste like. Our sever was very polite and attentive. The guy that seemed like the owner was very sweet, he would open doors for us and other guests as well. The inside of the restaurant made me feel very cozy. All the paintings and decorations, the overall interior of the restaurant made me feel like I was in Japan

I live in Columbus and haven't had the options like CO has. We shared a green papaya salad, and it was delicious! I would eat an entire bowl by myself. Don't forget to tear up the basil - it completes the flavor! We got the Lotus, Lemon, Firecracker, Sesame and Pork Belly sushi rolls. That is the order I would rank the rolls in flavor. It is a shame if anyone uses shoyu (sou sauce) or even wasabi when eating these rolls. The lotus has a rice paper wrap (for those who don't like seaweed) and an aioli on top that was so refreshing and flavorful. The lemon was honestly a very close second - maybe even a tie for first. I don't normally like salmon but it was so fresh and the lemon slice was refreshing and clean!

My son and I were greeted by our server soon upon arriving to our table. We came to dinner around 8pm on a Monday night, so the dining room wasn't very busy. Our server was polite and took our order at our pace with no issues. We like to stagger our orders when we go out to eat. That way, we're enjoying every plate we share that comes out without a rush. We ordered the Salmon Carpaccio to start, but then their Yellowtail Jalapeño came out to our table instead. It was disappointing to see, but then our server came out shortly and apologized. She also made sure to make our appetizer "on the house" for our troubles. This is a gesture I appreciate coming from one service industry gal to another; very professional and hard to find these days. Once the Salmon Carpaccio came out, we were very pleased with it and loved the notes of lemon zest and oil on the salmon sashimi. Next, we were eager to try something new so we asked about the "pressed sushi," on the menu and went with the salmon avocado sushi stack. To be honest, it was okay. It was literally salmon, rice and avocado pressed together and cut into little rectangular pieces. I'll give it to our server though because did tell us that's exactly what it was. Then we ordered the pan fried gyoza dumplings and the Cambodian Roll. The dumplings were disappointing. The flavor was just okay and it felt overpriced. I just know I could get those same dumplings elsewhere for cheaper, or that I would have better luck buying frozen gyoza dumplings and making them myself at home. However, the Cambodian roll was absolutely delicious! Bravo to whoever invented it! All of those flavors, textures and temperatures came together beautifully. It was unique and very satisfying. Lastly, we finished with an ube cheesecake for dessert and it was a perfectly balanced ending to our meal.

The fried rice and chicken combo hits exactly the way you want it to: flavorful, slightly indulgent, and satisfying without being overly heavy. What really keeps me coming back, though, is the bar. The Suishaya Special in particular is strong--not just in a gimmicky way, but balanced enough that you actually enjoy drinking it while still feeling it. That's about what I though too. It was really weird because we went at 4:30 PM and there was no one in the restaurant. It said to wait to be seated. We stood by the counter for about ten minutes waiting to be seated in a completely empty restaurant. The staff working just kind of looked at us like we were lost. Anyway, ordered spring rolls and they were $5.50 for two pretty small ones. Also, very greasy. I got the Singapore Noodles with chicken. It was okay. I kind of felt like I could make it at home. My girlfriend got Philadelphia Sushi and Shrimp. She said they all tasted like it came from a grocery store. I agreed. Columbia has a lot of Sushi restaurants. I'd skip this one.

The drinks were blended very well and used fresh lime juice, which was nice. The appetizers -- the kimchi fries and the boneless wings were pretty standard. The fries were crunchy, but we felt like there was more cheese than there was kimchi and sauce, so we've had better kimchi fries elsewhere. The cheese was very gooey though. The boneless wings weren't as crunchy as they could have been, especially coming out in a stone dish, but the garlic soy sauce was still pretty good. Our mains were really good -- the japchae, which I ordered with fried tofu, had the right texture and flavor, and was delicious yet spicy. The tofu was a little bland though. My partner enjoyed the squid and pork belly dish and said that the sauce was similar to the japchae sauce. The portions were pretty normal and not too big, so we had a few leftovers but not too many. The prices were also pretty reasonable as well. Overall we were really happy with our food here and would come back if we ever visited again.
