Read before using Camp Barkalot: I can't express how upset my husband and I are. We left our 4 year old dog and my mom's 8 year old dog at barkalot for a week while we were out of town (both of whom have been going to barkalot for around 4 years). We picked them up and nothing was said, so we returned home and got a call from Barkalot the next day. We called back and we're immediately ripped into by Kris the owner (blonde) about how our dog was in time out for the majority of the week he was there. No one called. No one texted. Our large dog was left in a small cage and no one cared to let us know. Not only that, but Kris made it clear that she's the owner and manager and that "it's time for us to find another place". Steven, her son, has even said to us over and over what a good dog he is and that he's so easy. This doesn't add up. Most concerning is that since camp, he has now been cowering in the corner anytime a man or boy comes into the house. Anyone who knows our lab knows that he's the most easy going and relaxed dog and he's so sweet. Now he shivers in the corner and poops himself when men come into the home. THIS IS NOT LIKE MY DOG. I am concerned about what is going on at Barkalot and will be letting all of the people I've referred know as well. STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE. read more

I don't know what else to give it. The whole package of services they have and the prices and the obvious love of the animals there add up to a five star review. We live in Utah county, so this is a place we use for vacations and when we are doing something special in the city for longer than we can leave the dog at home. The location is easy to get to from the freeway. The prices have always been fair. Their policy to watch your dog for free on the first day to make sure it is compatible is good. We've owned both a large dog and small dog over the years we've been coming and they have both done well. One of the other reasons we came initially is because they also board cats. That's important on a long trip. Even though we only come sporadically, they always remember our dog and cat. That's impressive. read more

Great daycare and boarding. The owners are on the premises often and you can tell they have a love of animals. One thing I appreciate is requirement that your pet be current on all vaccinations. We have been bringing our dogs pretty much since Camp Barkalot first opened (so have brought a few generations of our canine babies). We love the staff, very friendly and truly care about their charges, always remember them by names and remember their "quirks"... I am especially impressed and grateful to Camp Barkalot for the most recent boarding of our 14 year old great pyrenees (with age related mobility issues) and our 15 year old bichon, a "mamas boy". Camp Barkalot took special care to keep an eye on our pyrenees to make sure she had adequate rest and did not over-do it. And I got a very welcome report of the blanket and rest area at the front desk under the receptionist's feet that our bichon was able to occupy during his 4 day stay. We are from MT and we just adopted a dog and didn't want to kennel him for the duration of our vacation. So we reached out to Camp Barksalot. They took Milo for a couple hours to see if he'd fit in. Family owned business :3 I always bring in my pups for boarding when I go out of town. They always have a great time, and come home happy and clean. I love that the staff posts pictures of my pups and never gets annoyed when I call to check in lol. After my wallet could no longer afford City Pet Club, a few friends recommended the budget-friendly Camp Barkalot, not only for their $200.00 20-day pass (no expiration date might I add), but because they felt that their four legged children were receiving the best care around. I could tell when I picked Jazzy up after her first day at 'school' that she had a great time. As soon as we got home, she curled up on the couch to take a nap. What parent of a very active dog doesn't love that? Jazzy is a familiar face around this place, and there is no shortage of pets, kisses, and treats! I often board her for a couple nights too, when I go out of town. An added bonus for boarding is their $10.00 grooming fee. It's a steal. I'm a new dog mommy and had a very last minute trip outside of the state. I had so much trouble finding a place for my pup to board. I was able to drop of my pup a few hours at Camp Barkalot to see how he would do with the other pups and then we were able to drop him off the next day for 3 nights. I felt 100% comfortable leaving my puppy with Camp Barkalot. It's not fancy but for the price and for the quality of staff the place is SO worth it. We picked up our pup and he was worn out from having the time of his life at Camp Barkalot. I now plan on dropping off the pup every day during the week for a few hours! read more

It's hard to review because I don't know exactly how my dog was cared for over his six day stay. Like any boarding, Fido cannot recount his experience with much clarity. Therefore, I'm left to go on the observations I made during pickup and dropoff, price and service. Overall I would not return, but that isn't to say it wouldn't work for others. There are TONS of dogs here during the day. I spied 40+ dogs loose in the free area, and another dozen little ones behind the desk. It's incredible to behold the free area actually. First time I've seen a "herd" of dogs. You could damn near walk across them wall to wall. This leads me to believe that it's unlikely my dog got much TLC. It was also much louder than any kennel I've been to. Since there are so many dogs all in the same area, rest assured that 5-10 of them are violently barking at any given time, filling the sparse concrete warehouse. For these human ears, it was tough to bear. The smell is also something awful. The densest fog of disinfectant cleaner hanging in the air. I expect it at a kennel, but this was really above and beyond what I've experienced before. It makes me think that they don't have great ventilation and/or the proper amount of space for the sheer quantites of pee and poop they're dealing with. The service is very good. Front of house staff seem to really enjoy their jobs, and I got a great vibe from them. They seem well-organized, and your dog is given an ID tag around his/her collar (nice touch). They seemed very competent dealing with the food as well. Prices are a bit high at around $28/night. If I thought my dog was getting more attention it would be well worth it. But they're dealing with such huge numbers it looked, smelt, felt and sounded too much like a factory system. When Fido came home he avoided me for a couple days and was unusually withdrawn though he's been kenneled multiple times. I don't feel comfortable trying to name a specific reason for this beyond the inherent stress of boarding, but thought it was important to mention. And frankly it does figure into my overall perception. read more

I've taken my two mini doodles here twice now and they've loved it. Both times they've been, they've been taken care of and worn out after each day. I love how they have a designated area for the little dogs to wander around and play. My girl one is skittish and shy but she's not there and warms up quickly. My boy sometimes bites and he's usually playing with all the other dogs being playful. Their prices are very competitive and great for long periods of times. I've taken them to 6 or 7 other places in California and this place is by far the safest and friendliest for my dogs. They don't put them in a kennel all day and take several pictures during the day in Facebook because they don't have a webcam so that's nice as well. We brought our dog, Bella for a 3 day weekend at the place. At first, she was a bit intimidated by a huge group of dogs but the workers there introduced her little by little and after a few minutes, she was comfortable enough to run around in the group. After coming back, the receptionist knew I was picking up Bella, remembered that I wanted conditioner and shampooing (given Bella itches like crazy) and even had a cute handkerchief around her neck! I liked the additional touches, attention to details and they even had her nails cut (which I had no idea after I brought her home). Overall, the staff seems trustworthy, remembers which dog goes with which owner and there seems to be a LOT of repeat customers (always a plus). read more

Had to board my dog for the first time for 5 nights. Pretty effortless - they jsut had me pre-package each of her meals because i chose to keep her on the same food. I think they can feed your dog for $1 a meal or something like that if you don't want to bring your own dog food. I obviously dont know how my dog's stay went, but when i got her back, she was the same old hyper, happy, and excited dog. Seemed like she had a decent time, but she was FILTHY. Can't really blame the establishment for that... but i would definitely recommend getting your dog a bath on the last day of boarding. It's only $15 and its definitely worth it. I'm not a fan of boarding dogs in general, but if the need arises, I'll definitley be choosing Camp Barkalot again. Can't beat the price of $25 a night. read more

We started leaving our dog,Lincoln, here when we go on extended trips a few years ago after picking him up from a trip at the Vet's when we left him at Old Farm Pet Resort. We were reticent about leaving him anywhere after that experience, but here, they assured us Lincoln was in good hands. They are the best. Lincoln loves going there and they take very good care of him while he is there. I'm able to look on Instagram while I'm gone, even, to see how he is. This is an over due review. Had to go to vegas and could only take one dog with us. We left our weimaraner here. After lots of research, this was the only place i was comfortable with. Got to leave Oliver here for a "trial" run to see how he fared with other dogs. We adopted him from the shelter and he had a multitude of problems including anxiety. It took a while but he got along with the dogs. He did get overwhelmed with the big dog group so they let him stay with the small/medium size dogs, which was better. He had his own kennel, which was great since he liked being in his own space. He also escaped his kennel at night (the workers had video footage of him climbing out). But the kennels are inside a warehouse so it wasnt a big deal. He escaped into the play area. Workers thought it was funny. So did we. Also left my chihuahua here during oliver's trial stay. She stayed in the front with the ladies. read more

I have taken all of my dogs to Camp Barkalot. Their staff really care for my little guys. We rescued the oldest member of our family and she was always taken by his other family to a place in Cottonwood heights. We tried that for a couple of times, thinking that she would be familiar with them and their staff, my poor Shilo would jump on me, and would try to leave, I would leave in tears, the third time we decided to leave her at our favorite place, Camp Barkalot. Shilo was a different girl, she was at ease and happy and wanted to play with the other dogs, she ran to the staff and was very content. Our furry family members know when they are loved, Shilo knew she was in good hands. Camp Barkalot posts pictures of the pooches on Facebook and it gives us such a peace of mind! I just moved to Salt Lake City three weeks ago. Based on a referral, I took my 5 month old St Bernard puppy, Gelsey, to Camp Barkalot. Gelsey has been going to puppy school since she was 11 weeks old. Everyone who meets her loves her; she plays well with other dogs of any age, shares her toys, and is extremely obedient especially for a puppy. I knew there was a problem when she didn't want to go in the place and a few times she jumped on me as they were taking her into the dog area. Several days later I went to pick her up and saw them grab her by the scruff and drag her to the exit. She didn't have her harness on so I didn't say anything but wondered why they didn't use a slip lead (aka kennel lead). I'd also seen them do this to other dogs which made me nervous. Gelsey loves food so they could have offered her a treat to entice her to the door but they didn't do that either. From then on, I left her harness on (which has an attached 1 foot lead) so they could guide her wherever they needed her to go. A few days later I witnessed the same thing again but this time as she was entering. I offered the harness lead to the gentleman taking her in but instead he grabbed her by the base of the harness and dragged her. He could have dislocated her shoulder doing that. I almost killed the guy and brought it to the attention of the owners. I asked why the did not have slip leads. They said they did. So I asked if they had slip leads, why were they not being used or at least offering her a treat to entice her to go inside. They apologized profusely, said they would speak to the staff, and promised it would not happen again. I didn't want to take her back and spoke to her previous dog day care. They asked I give Camp Barkalot the benefit of the doubt but also keep my eyes open for any strange behavior on Gelsey's part. The next day I took her back and this time they had a treat to entice her into the dog area. However, when I picked her up they told me they thought she was sick because she was mopping and lethargic. Well as soon as we got home she started running around and ate all her food. The following day we started to play her favorite game, soccer. But this time when I lifted my foot to kick the ball, she yelped and ran. She refused to play. Later, I opened a closet door while she was next to me and some clothes fell to the ground (not the first time that's happened either). I lifted my foot to catch them and once again she screamed and ran. Then she laid down and didn't move. To someone who didn't know her, you'd say she was mopping and lethargic. But that's the way she acts when she's been scolded. And given she no longer wants to play her favorite game, I think she was kicked. However, I can't prove anything. The only reason I am giving two stars is because they gave me a refund on my unused pass. I feel sorry for the dogs there and the people who trust them. read more

I am really unimpressed with any Salt Lake City pet boarding businesses. After our experience I am even more so. I never write reviews, but I'm so infuriated that I feel l need to tell others. Everything started out fine, we took our dog for his interview and they checked to make sure his vaccinations were up to date...points to them for conducting both checks. We asked if we could see the rest of the grounds, they said no, which set off an alarm of why not? Anyway-we didn't push the issue and decided to board our dog anyway because we simply did not have any other options (aka house sitter, take him with us, etc) Strike 1. All was well until we picked him up from his 4 day stay. When we came in the staff that day had no idea who we were picking up (which was ok since this was our first time there) but they also didn't know which dog...again, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. When we got our dog we paid and they didn't give us any update on how he did or if he ate his food (which he sometimes won't at first in new surroundings, which we told them about) they didn't give us any indication at all that they had even seen our dog all week. Strike 2. We got him home and showered because of course he was filthy but that wasn't a problem for us, we knew he would be. The problem came when after 3 days home he would not eat and barely drank water. He was also not himself, and any dog lover will know that you know how your dog should be reacting to certain situations. He wasn't excited about anything. (More alarms....) After those 3 days he slowly started eating so we thought maybe he is just so tired from him stay....then the puking started. Our dog has been known to get into things and yes I know, dogs puke, but this was different. Next came the diarrhea. And then the uncontrolled puking, peeing and pooping in the house. Strike 3. We have tried to be nice and say "well maybe we left something out, maybe we gave him something, maybe he's hot, maybe maybe maybe...." Blood in stool = vet visit = $$$$ vet bills = unhappy customer but happy dog. Do yourself a favor, if you have a dog that is hyper, smart, will find things he's not suppose to, loves people...do NOT take them here. I'm positive they have little interactions with the dogs they just let them "play" inside with each other. And who knows what their sleeping area looks like...do they wash the bedding or the bowls or the toys? Doubtful. Their daycare may be great, but I highly recommend to avoid this place for any overnight stays. read more

Camp Barkalot also has a terrific Kitty Camp. Misty the Cat is our 12 year old only child. She doesn't like going to kitty camp since she likes to be an only child, but we know she's in great hands. We looked at several places before choosing Camp Barkalot. Every other place the cats are locked in kennels for most of their stay. That just wasn't what we wanted for our cat (she was ten and we had recently adopted her prior to her first stay). Camp Barkalot has two small rooms for cats. The great thing is no kennels. The cats are free to roam about in these two rooms (each about the size of a large walk-in closet) that have lots of perches and places for cats to curl up and be comfortable. The cats aren't ignored in favor of the pooches, either. The cats get play time and cuddle time (which is extremely important for our dog-like cat). We were really hesitant to have our declawed senior cat (technically she is a senior even though she acts like she's 5) left out there with other cats, but the staff told us that there's usually no problem since it isn't any cat's territory and the cats are monitored. Misty has never come home with any injuries or illnesses...not so much as a scratch. We've taken her at least three times each year and we've been really happy with how well she's taken care of. Also, it is reasonably priced, $15 a day. That's a bargain! read more

Our dog loves going here! His hair always turns out cute, and best of all he is happy when we pick him up. Dallas, our maltese and poodle mix, does tend to struggle with groomers (he gets nervous, gets grumpy, etc) but he has always been in good spirits when he comes back from Camp Barkalot. The only downside is that you have to make sure and call in advance, it can take awhile to get your pooch in. Overall we love the place and would highly reccommend it! read more

We LOOOOVE Camp Barkalot and so does our little ones! When we first set out to find a Doggie Daycare, we were looking for someplace that was fairly close to Downtown Salt Lake and also not too expensive. To be honest, we chose Camp Barkalot because it was less expensive than the other ones. I did not read any reviews nor did I do any research. Yes, I know...what kind of parent am I? But you know what, I am SOOOOOO glad that we chose them. We used to take our miniature schnauzers there every day when they were puppies. They would come home so tired from playing all day, which made it nice so we could unwind after a long day at work also. We now have 2 other little ones that we currently take to Camp Barkalot. They both LOOOOVE it there as well. When we pull up to the building, our little Nikko starts crying until he gets inside and sees his favorite person, Cami. Believe me, Nikko is a Momma's boy but at Daycare he is Cami's boy! We try not to board any of our doggies but there did come a time that we needed to and believe me I was worried. Since they had been going there on a regular basis, having them stay for several nights was no big deal for them. We did not have any problems with their boarding experience. Our little ones stay up in the front area so I can't say what it is like for the bigger dogs. We have one dog that likes to sit on a chair in the corner as soon as she gets there so that she can observe what is happening before she ventures out to play with the other dogs. She also likes to sit and watch TV all day so if their little TV is on, she will do that. Another one, likes to run to the back door so she can go to the outside area to go play and she will tell you if you are not following her to let her outside. They all have different personalities and they all Looove it! The owner and the staff are the BEST!. And YES, they do INSIST on your vaccination records. They always remind us when they need a copy of our updated records just in case we forget. read more
