I have been a customer at Liberty Bark since late September 2023. Tonight I found a shock collar tightly wrapped around my Wheaten's neck and it is active and working. I signed a waiver that I consent to its use and was never verbally told one was being used. He's an exceptional pet who rarely barks and plays well with others. This is unconscionable. I have requested to speak with the owner to find out why this was placed on him and how often. The use of these collars is not endorsed by many Vets and other pet professionals and I certainly did not know they were using this device on Winnie. I will not be sending Winnie back to Liberty Bark. What I find most deplorable is the total lack of knowledge I had that this method was being used on Winnie. This is from the SPCA 5 Reasons not to use a shock collar Shock collars do not help your dog understand what positive behaviours you are seeking - they only inflict pain for unwanted actions. Five reasons not to use a shock collar: 1.) You love your dog. The bond between you and your dog is precious. Using aversive training methods based on fear and pain may result in your dog avoiding you, or even becoming aggressive with you. Using humane training based on rewards instead of punishment addresses unwanted behaviours without jeopardizing the special relationship you share with your pet. 2.) Shock collars are not more effective than humane training. While punishment-based tools like shock collars can result in changes in your dog's behaviour, studies have shown that positive, reward-based training is just as effective. 3.) Shock collars can harm your dog.The electrostatic shock can cause psychological distress for your pet, including phobias and high levels of stress, and can result in unhealthy increases in heart rate and painful burns to your dog's skin. Use of shock collars can also habituate your pet to pain and cause increases in aggression and fear-based behaviours. 4.) The experts advise against using shock collars.Veterinary associations and humane organizations have long recognized that punishment-based training can be detrimental to animals. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association's position statement on training strongly discourage aversive training methods. 5.) There's a better way. We understand that, as a pet guardian, you need to address unwelcome behaviours such as barking and lack of recall. I can't believe how much stress relief I've gotten ever since I signed my German Shepherd up. She has been very reactive in the past, and I'm so excited to see her progress. Liberty Bark makes signing up for daycare and add-ons very convenient. I love that I can sign her up for daycare, grooming, any extra enrichment activities, etc. and it's all coordinated for me. If I forget her food, they can provide her some, and they even do medication administration for free. I have one dog who's picky/selective about his friends and another that's a playful social dog. I didn't think I could EVER send my selective dog to a daycare to actually play with other dogs but Liberty Bark has done it! I've used other daycares before and I would rather my dogs go to a structured no frills daycare because then I know they will be on their best behaviors. I have been taking my two dogs (PomChi & Maltese) to Liz for over a year now. My PomChi (Lulu) is a rescue and is very timid, scared and was formerly non-sociable. Liz has been able to bring Lulu out of her shell gently to the point Lulu now loves going to doggy daycare to relax and play with the other dogs. If i could give Bridget and her amazing team a 10 star review, i would. When i explained my dogs behavior issues and stressed i didnt have transportation or access to immediate finances, she was understanding. She told me she does it for the dogs, and she does. My dog Max had a bite history, reactiveness, separation anxiety, and the list goes on. From day one Bridget worked with me with transportation and payment plans. She worked with my dog once a week as well as a weekly group class. Within 3 classes we could see change in his behavior and most of all, us learning how to guide him to make better decisions. The team would record all of the training sessions while he was at day camp. Not only training him but training us. While it is an investment, I can now say my dog comfortably greets on and off leash, plays well with puppies and is able to enjoy life with no anxiety. While i went out of town for the weekend, she would watch Max. He would get amazing exposure and daily interaction with kids and dogs. I would always get plenty of pictures and report cards as well. Took my dogs, Riley and Rex, here for the first time for boarding this weekend when our sitter fell through last minute. Everyone I spoke to there was extremely helpful and accommodating for a last minute reservation. I was updated everyday with pictures and videos and it really helped soothe my own anxiety about leaving our babies at a new facility. I was even notified when Riley was drinking a lot of water, which is normal for her, but that shows how closely they keep an eye on your fur babies! Rex is reactive to other dogs and they were out socializing him and helping him make other dog friends! They both came back relaxed and well cared for while we were gone. Liberty Bark is amazing. I have to rather rambunctious dogs, one of which has been bitten twice and is often afraid of dog she doesn't know. After searching and searching for an appropriate daycare and boarding facility I was so happy to find Liberty Bark. It is the perfect place for them - structured and all about what's good for the dogs. Both my dogs love it there and get excited In the car when they realize we are getting close.
