At 3,494 acres it is the largest park in the Morris county Park System. The park has 24.5 miles of multi-use trails including a blazed bike trail. Horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, bow hunting, tent and RV camping are available. There are hiking trails for all levels. Headley Overlook at 1,280 feet provides a view of Lake Hopatcong. Saffin Pond provides fishing opportunities although no swimming or boating is allowed. Bird watchers often come to observe migratory birds. Beaver inhabit this pond and can often be seen. The park is free with the exception of RV and tent camping which require a permit. For $20 you will get water and electricity (30-50 amp) hookup for your RV. Spots are wide and well separated. The park has clean restrooms and a bear proof garbage system.

I camped in a lean-to at this reservation overnight before the water was turned on for the season…read more The reservation is clean and quiet, just a 45 minute drive from NYC without traffic, and great for beginner hikers. The campgrounds have 4 lean-to's, each with a picnic table and fire ring. Wood is for sale, on the honor system, you drop off your cash in an envelope by where the RV's are (wish they had a box closer!). There is a water source right in this area, and two porta johns. They also have numerous tent platforms, it's an easy straightforward spot. It's almost right next to Weldon Road which runs through the reservation, so you do hear some cars. On the plus side this means you don't have to lug your gear far. I stuck to the Yellow, Blue, and Teal Highland trails. There are some nice overlooks, Headley overlook is perfect for a night hike since it's right by the camp site. I saw some fishers at Saffin Pond. Black bears are all over the Jersey wilderness and they have brochures available right next to the trail map pamphlets explaining how to keep your camp site safe from them, also what to do if you run into one. I didn't see any during my visit but I did see a deer, a beaver dam, a garter snake, a bat that wanted to chill in my lean-to overnight, and a bunch of cute orange newts. Fiddleheads, skunk cabbage, and spring onions were some of the common plant life. Early in the season, over the course of a weekend, I saw maybe five other people- two mountain bikers, two fishermen, and a guy with his dogs on the trail. I had a great time, and if you're new to camping or hiking, or easing yourself back into either having taking a break, this is a great, quiet place to visit. I wouldn't say it's something to come out of your way for.

The owners are nice and accommodating. I called to make a reservation and was able to do so. It was $35.00 a night. The price includes your campsite, fire pit, access to kayaks, showers, and bathroom. To be clear, we picked a site where you can set up a tent and not an RV. But RV sites are also available. Check in was a breeze and was brought to our site once we checked in. Wood is sold on the site. Its a dollar per log. We did see a bear by the garbage and immediately called the owners to let them know. They did come and close the garbage bins and made a lot of noise to lure the bear away. Make sure after you eat you put all food and drinks in your car and leave nothing out once you head to bed. This will attract bears if you leave stuff out over night.

We camped here for three nights just before the Labor Day weekend. We camped with our two…read moregranddaughters, ages 10 and 8. We absolutely loved this park! The campground is on three levels, with nice large lots with a fire ring and picnic table. Wifi and cable is included. The wifi connection was pretty fast, especially for a campground. The bathrooms and individual private showers are nice and clean. I did use the laundry, which was very nice, but very pricey! $2.50 to wash and $2.00 to dry. But this is New York, so I wasn't all that surprised. The Pavilion on the upper level was staffed for most of each day, and there were all kinds of activities which the kids adored. At the time we were there, our girls were the only kids in the park, and they got lots of personal attention. They made several crafts, played putt putt golf, and went on a nature hike. Even though it was pretty cool they swam in the heated pool both days (it's kept at about 82 degrees). The playground is very nice for younger kids. We were sorry that we were leaving before the holiday weekend, because there were lots of things going on for families. The staff was also helpful to us, providing us with written directions to nearby grocery stores and pharmacies, as well as directions on how to take the train into the city, which we were also able to do. The price was higher than we usually pay to camp, but the location and amenities made it worth the extra cost. We are already talking about coming back next year! Another thing that was nice about this park was that they gave me the name of a pet sitter who comes to the park, so that we could have care for our dog while we went to the city. I have never seen this at any other campground, and I really appreciated it.

We stayed here for three nights. The place for a somewhat outdoor setting is overall clean even…read morethough we did find some cobwebs in the lights that looked like they'd been there for a while. The water pressure is very strong for the shower and faucets, which is great. They do have bikes and kayaks, but you have to pay to rent them, according to the website, so we didn't bother because it's ridiculous that they'd charge you after paying so much per night. You can't drink the faucet water, so they give you 16oz bottles of water, and we stayed three nights and got eight bottles of water. We weren't sure if we'd get charged the $1.50 per bottle that was on the website if we asked for more. Guess you can't drink your recommended amount of daily water. They also have a bunch of creepy statues around that look more satanic than gargoyles like they have on their map. To get to your dome it's a decent walk for most, so they do offer you a ride, but when we checked out, we texted about a ride and never got a response, so we lugged everything up the hill to the car and then when we got there the one guy said you should've text and I would've picked you up. Yeah, we did a half hour ago and you never responded back. They even tell you at check in if you need anything to text them, but they aren't that responsive. We texted two times our whole trip and when we did get a response it was an hour later and the second time we never got a text, which is why we lugged everything up the hill. The domes are nice, the beds are comfortable but the hospitality sucks. The grill is great and there's plenty of seasoning, plates, pots and utensils to get you through your stay.
