This is more of a dining room in a community cabin than a resort, but it's a fun place to grab a meal before heading out to the Madison River for a day of fun. The vibe here is definitely small town-it's run by the same folks who have been there for many years. I ordered the biscuits and gravy breakfast special and was truly disappointed. The flavor was bland and the gravy was watery-not worth the $20 price tag. My dining partner had an omelet that looked like it had every ingredient in the kitchen thrown together. It was huge! He seemed to be pleased with it. The ambience was cozy-especially when we had a morning snow in late June-all the patrons kept walking to the window to take videos (including me!) First off, the setting is quaint and picturesque sitting on the Madison river. The food is ok, but not for the price. A pancake, egg and sausage are $20!! Grant it the pancake is gigantic still not worth the price. The waitress let us order these gigantic pancakes for our 6 & 3 year olds knowing there's no way they could eat all of that... now that's $40 of uneaten food bc there's no kids menu. It who'd of been a nice courtesy to tell us before we ordered them that one pancake could feed 3. Our bill ended up being $134 for 4 adults and 2 kids for food that can't t compare to a Waffle House. The checkout lady running the register is very horrible. stopped in and said we need a reservation to eat. empty tables and seating at the bar. I really thought the way she handled herself was poor. This same lady when we asked to run a shuttle for rafting from hebgen to quake said its way to dangerous to raft that stretch and we need Fish Wildlife and Parks permission. What are you talking about? If you don't want to be inviting then why are you in the business of a running a business of catering to tourist or the public? First off, the setting beside the Madison River is beautiful!!! It is a small restaurant. We had reservations for six , just in case. Our server has worked there through four different owners, a total of 46 years. She was great! After she took our orders we all went outside to watch a couple large birds of prey soar around and over the river. It was nice and sunny outside. When our meals arrived she called us inside to eat. Several folks ordered the Daily Special which was a boysenberry pancake, I swear it was the size of your head! It was as big as the platter/plate it was served on. Included with the Special was a nice thick patty of what I'm pretty sure was a house made sausage. It was a little spicy and delectable. An egg was also served to order. I didn't hear one complaint. I myself had the half pound ham steak, an egg, hash browns and toast. Everything was very good. The hash browns were nice and crispy, just the way I ordered them. Just a word of caution; they only accept cash. No plastic. However they do have an on-site ATM. The pricing is a little expensive but considering the location , the food and the wonderful service, it was well worth the price. I gladly eat there again when in the Yellowstone area. read more

I used to tell people that it's the best breakfast west of the Mississippi. Now it's a tourist trap, and nothing more. Poor quality food, and they don't care about anything except your money. We went today for breakfast and ordered the special. 1 blueberry pancake, 1 egg and bacon. I ordered an extra egg, with eggs ordered over easy. I don't mind waiting for my food being cooked, but if it's not right, don't serve it. Once again ( and my last time going there ) it was a huge disappointment. The bacon was burned and crumbled when you touched it. The eggs were well done and not a drop of yolk, it was way overcooked. The pancakes were like regular pancakes with not a single blueberry to be found. Yes, it was purple in color, but no berries. They didn't once check on us to see how it was. She needs to step away from dealing with the public if it makes her so miserable that she treats her clients so badly. Looking for an authentic local breakfast place, then this is it. One of the most scenic locations along the river you will find. You can even watch people fly fishing while dining. We went for breakfast, and got seated pretty quickly. Our party got a mixture of breakfast items, but I opted for the single pancake, a side of bacon plus a cinnamon roll for us to share. The pancake was one of the best I've ever had and as big as my dinner plate!!! The bacon was perfectly cooked...crispy just like I like it. The cinnamon roll was fantastic and HUGE! I can see why these 2 items are what they are known for! Afterwards, we had the perfect family photo shoot right outside the back door. It was a little drizzly when I went, but on a pretty day definitely sit on the back porch for the most perfect setting. This is a must breakfast spot when in the area! Friendly service and yummy food! The hotcake was the best. Great spot behind the cafe to watch some fly fishing and enjoy the sunshine.

We come to Yellowstone area every year and this has always been one of our favorite places to get breakfast and bring our guests to experience the scenery. It always has been a bit expensive, but the view made it totally worth it. We were about blown over by the pricing this year and were given a bit of a guff about not having a reservation, nevermind the place was about empty and we had never needed a reservation before. Good to know now I guess. The food is mediocre, not great, not bad. Not sure we will be going back anymore because the cost of the meal has exceeded the benefits of the beautiful location. Pack a picnic and head back to the Ghost Village area just adjacent would be my recommendation. If the costs don't scare you off, it's a totally enjoyable experience, just call ahead! read more

We just came for the breakfast, which was great. The small accommodations made for an hour long wait but it was worth it in the end. The cinnamon roll was as big as my head and delicious (could have used more cinnamon though). The bacon was thick and meaty - 3 slices per order. The hashbrowns are made there in their kitchen - fresh and crispy. The pancakes were good too - thick and huge. I don't know how anyone could eat two! Went for breakfast due to a suggestion from my fishing guide. He told me it was going to be pricey and he was right. He also said it was worth it, and he was right! Great breakfast that was huge. Right by a beautiful area on the river. The young lady we had helping serve us, Madi, was as sweet as she could be. My visit to the fly shop afterwards cost me some more money but David (i think) was very helpful in planning out my fly choices for the day. This review is for the cafe only A trip to West Yellowstone, Montana is not complete without eating breakfast at the cafe at the Campfire Lodge Resort nestled on the beautiful Madison River. Although they serve the worst cup of coffee in the U.S., the breakfasts at the Campfire are pretty darn good. They have a daily pancake special, which is a giant pancake topped with two cooked-to-order eggs and three slices of bacon. This is what I usually order and I've never been disappointed. Everyday the types of berries cooked in the pancake changes and they are all good. If cinnamon rolls are your thing, they make a ginormous one here. They have great omelets and hash browns too. I usually go with a group of about 8 people and our wait to get seated is normally 60-90 minutes as this is a popular place. There are benches and chairs along the river where we sit and wait for our table, so the time does pass quickly. Sometimes members of our party will get out their fly rods and do a bit of fishing while we wait. Once seated, the food takes forever to be served, so plan your day accordingly. Warning: They do not accept credit cards, but there is an ATM available that is usually in working order. Let's see, really bad coffee, they don't take credit cards, long wait, good food, outstanding views of the Madison River. You won't be disappointed. read more

Initially, I visited Hi Country Tavern, a competing restaurant. When I was informed about the phenomenal pancakes of Campfire Lodge Resort. After arriving, I was in awe of the quaintness of the facility. Although I failed to create a reservation, they accommodated me. I didnt make reservations because I didn't know they existed. I ordered what they were known for, the fruit pancakes. The first thing I tasted were the hashbrowns. I never had a taste for them. Then again, I was used to eating McDonald's hashbrowns. I immediately looked up at the chef while sitting at the diner. I began to converse with him and asked him what did he do to his hashbrowns, they were great! To protect his trade secrets I won't mention them here. Each and everything on my plate was fresh. The chef's methods required menu items to be fresh. Honestly, the prices were on the high side. But, you have to think about what you're paying for. You're supporting a small business owner that's interested in delivering a high-quality product. They struggled through the pandemic with the hopes that the product would speak for itself. Mass production tends to discount quality. Your food is prepared directly in front of you as you connect with the chef. You don't know who's making the food at McDonald's. I tipped my waitress and the chef, and I made reservations for the next three days that I was in the area. The ultimate cheat code is to call ahead for a reservations. They are a Mom and Pop establishment. As we all know, these establishments have a smaller workforce. With a smaller workforce, an influx of people adversely affects the work flow. read more

It came deconstructed in the plate with 3 strips of bacon, half burned and half fairly uncooked with huge chucks of unrendred fat. We just took our first trip to Montana, and I've been all over the world and I will honestly say that it is in the top 2 most beautiful/amazing places I've ever been. I'm and OC girl that's always itching to move away somewhere way different, and I'm seriously trying to convince my husband to move to Montana and live off the fat of the land! We didn't stay in the lodge, but our friend's cabin was about 5 miles up the river from this place and we were told they had the best breakfast EVER, so we decided to stop and eat there on our way home. Excellent choice! The place sits right on the Madison River, and if it wasn't 30 degrees outside we would have definitely sat outside, where you can literally stick your feet into the water from the table! So we sat inside, where you still had a wonderful view of the running river and a couple of guys fly fishing. The cafe is in the same building as the general store, which is my husband's DREAM; all kinds of fly fishing and fishing gear. The whole place is old school though; it looked like an old house, and the rooms are actually little cabins spread out all over the property. I believe the family that owns and runs the place has their own little house right there too. Anyway, I ordered a short stack (2 pancakes) along with a 2 egg/2 sausage/hashbrowns/toast plate for myself and my 15 month old daughter to share. My husband got the steak and eggs, and his cousin got the special of the day, a half pound ham steak. When my pancakes came out first, all of our eyes popped out of our heads-they were each literally bigger than a dinner plate! And they were hot and fluffy and the edges were crisp and I expected that since they were so big they wouldn't be as good, but they were honestly the BEST pancakes I've ever had. I wish they would have told me how big they were, because between my baby and myself, we ate just over a quarter of one pancake! Everything else was so delicious too; the eggs (scrambled) were perfectly cooked-not too dry and not runny, the hash was to die for, but the sausage was just your average diner links. Still good though. My husband was super happy with his steak; it wasn't some nasty flat, grey piece of meat like you get at most other diners; this thing was like a filet mignon. We were all ranting and raving about how awesomely awesome the food was. VERY decently priced, to boot! I felt like I didn't want to eat anything else the rest of the day because I didn't want to forget the taste of the deliciousness that had just entered my mouth and run through my body. Darnet campfire. You used to have the best breakfast in West Yellowstone. Unfortunately our last visit was a big thumbs down. I understand the 90 minute wait for our food, it is a small diner, but to wait that long and then have bad food, was disappointing. Pancakes were burned, eggs were really bad and the omelets were extraordinary sad. The hashbrowns and views are unbeatable however. So if you are stuck on grabbing a bite at this charming just off the river joint, stick to the basic pancakes and bacon with a side of hash! read more

This is the 4th year in a row I have stayed here. The fishing and cafe are great and everyone is real friendly. Their cabins are rustic but very livable and a lot cheaper then what you will pay in West Yellowstone. The drive to Yellowstone National Park is just about 20-25 minutes from Campfire Lodge (70mph speed limit) and at night you fall a sleep listening to the river instead of all the in town noises. Cabin #15 is brand new and is on the bank of the Madison River... it is gorgeous cabin!! They have new water, new septic and new electric and the best view of any campground in West Yellowstone. So you know this is not a "resort" that is the legal name from way back. It is a campground with 15 cabins, about 17 RV sites and several tent camping sites. Plus, a laundry room, public showers, cafe, and huge fly shop. read more

This place is great. We stayed in cabin 4, if you are over 6 feet tall, don't take this cabin as you will not fit on the bed. So that's the only down side. The water pressure was great, everything in the cabin worked great. It is close to all good fishing and the town of West Yellowstone. The cafe is unbelievable, if you can sit at the bar, do so, you get an up close vision of all the food. Cinnamon rolls were huge as well as the pancakes. Oh, and you are right there next to the river! Talk to Bob in the fly shop for all things fishing, he knows a lot about the area! read more

Just got back from a trip to Yellowstone and we stayed our first couple days camping at the Campfire Lodge. It was absolutely great. Next time we're in the area, we'll either camp there again or grab a cabin. It was in pretty stark contrast to the Madison Campground we later stayed at in the park. When I called to make the reservation, Roy was kind and easy to talk with. The location is absolutely wonderful. It sits at a bend in the Madison River between Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake, nestled in the mountains. Our first night, we could hear the water of Cabin Creek gently flowing nearby. Loved it. Morning was serene and the Madison is just beautiful. It flows about 20 feet from the back of the cafe/office/fly shop building. There were trees all around, so plenty of cozy shade. I can't say how much I loved how quiet it was in the morning! So relaxing. No generators were running or people yelling, just the rush of the wind, Cabin Creek, and the Madison. We had breakfast in the cafe, which was delicious. I had eggs, bacon, toast, hash browns and coffee - all done just right. It surprised us how good the coffee was. The staff was pleasant and the atmosphere calm. The restrooms and showers were impeccable - a blessing when you're staying in a tent. It takes a little bit of a drive to get to the park from Quake Lake, but it's nice that West Yellowstone is right there in case you need any supplies on your way in, or dinner on your way out. We had a great stay at the Campfire Lodge and I'm sure we'll be back. read more

Campfire Lodge 06/01/2020 thru 06/08/2020 We checked into the Campfire Lodge on June 1st, 2020, we were informed at check-in that all the amenities were closed: showers, bathrooms and laundry. The rep told us that everyone was informed of these closures the week before...we were not informed of any closures anytime before our arrival. As a matter of fact, the month before our arrival I started checking their website twice a week until our departure to the Campfire Lodge and there was no mention of any amenities being closed. We asked for a discount and we were told: no. We booked this lodge because of the amenities and the beautiful area, for what we were not able to use we could have stayed at Moose Creek in the Gallatin area which is down the street and saved some money and still enjoyed the beautiful area! Electricity went out for the whole lodge the last 2 nights of our stay in the evening until early next morning. We went into the restaurant on Saturday morning and ordered a specific breakfast item, we were informed that it was not available due to not having all the ingredients. The owners and staff are very rude, very disappointed with them. The area is truly beautiful, but because of all these issues we encountered upon arrival and during our stay, we will not be returning nor will we be recommending the Campfire Lodge to anyone. read more

The good: A very scenic, clean and quiet place to stay near Yellowstone. The bathrooms are very clean. The bad: We felt the staff was definitely lacking in customer service skills. Noone ever asked us how our stay was of if we needed anything. We had an small emergency and when I went to the office to ask for a bit of help, they blatently said, "Sorry, can't help you." I won't go into details, but it could have been easily resolved by them, but they wouldn't even try to help. The owner pretty much ignores the guests as he is far too busy with his fly tying activities to say "Hi" to folks. They are extremely proud of their breakfast and the pancakes are ginormous, but it's just a pancake. Pretty much everything else is so drenched in butter (including the toast) you can barely eat it. They actually ladle butter on the cinnamon rolls. Entirely TOO much. They do have really good, but GREASY hashbrowns. Also, I wish I had a dollar for every time someone came around and lectured us about leaving anything out that might attract bears, including a couple empty water bottles. What? I assure, we are very neat campers. No food, garbage or anything else was ever left out. Next time, we will stay closer to the park, as it got to be a bit tedious every day making the drive back to the park. read more

Stayed one night 8/22/18 and got a concussion in cabin #4. Bathroom door is 5'10". They would not refund our cash deposit for four nights. "Tough Luck" was response. Our safety was more important than staying in run down ancient cabin so left next day. Fortunately health clinic in Ennis was available. In process of filing claim. Cabins and old motor homes all crowded together. Restaurant okay and is only restaurant in 50 miles. Won't accept VISA so kiss cash off. USFS campground next door much better. read more

My husband and I have come here from PA for three years in a row now. We have no complaints. The view from the cabin window is amazing. We've never been let down by the breakfast and the trails around the place lead to some of the most beautiful places on earth. The resident osprey put on a show as well all the other wildlife. I don't recommend this place the food was just ok. However the prices they charged was highway robbery. They must feel that they are allowed to charge what they do as they are the only restaurant for miles. So let me explain the prices , for a 1/2 pound cheeseburger with a snack size bag of lays potato chips is $21.50 you would think for this price the burger would be phenomenal but no it was comparable to a McDonald's burger. They also serve breakfast the pancakes are the size of the plate but you pay 17.50 for that and god forbid you want to go cheap with just a piece of toasted sandwich bread that will cost you $5.00. If you want to share your meal with another and ask for an extra plate they charge $3.00 but you could have a cup saucer for free. Oh be sure you pay with cash because they will charge you a 5% transaction fee to use a credit card . I know that my credit card company only charges a 3% transaction fee so they are adding 2% just for themselves. Do your self a favor and keep on driving. read more

If you like large helpings, friendly people and a great view of the Madison River, then this is the place for you. The place only serves breakfast and lunch, but breakfast is by far the best, especially if you're headed off for a day of fishing, hiking or mountain biking. Years ago, CLR was under different ownership, so the decor was more outdoorsy with mounted fish on the walls, etc. Although there is a chicken motif in the place now, the food is still the same: excellent. read more

We made our reservations months ago, spoke with the owner the week before to make sure everything thing was open and good to go because of the coronavirus and shutdowns, we were told everything was good to go, upon arrival, we were told the laundry room and bathrooms were closed, the owner was very rude about it and every other time I went into the office. She was also over heard on the phone by wife wife, saying I don't know why its such a big deal, doesn't everyone have bathrooms in their rv's. We were not offered a discount because everything was closed, they didn't clean out the garbage cans on a regular basis, and didn't have any supplies in their store, you had to wear a mask in their store but 5 steps away in their cafe you didn't, couldn't open the bathrooms because of coronavirus but could have the restaurant open??? The campground down the road had everything open, I suggest a visit to Montana for camping just not at this place!!! read more

I've stayed here in a truck camper for the last seven years. I find the staff very friendly and knowledgeable about the fishing in the area. The fly shop is nicely stocked with great tying materials. The Cafe' puts on one great spread at a very nice price. If you are looking for a nice quite place on the river this is it. The repaired water system is outstanding, great tasting water. read more

I haven't stayed at the lodge but my family and I have eaten at the adorable and tasty restaurant several times when visiting Yellowstone from Chicago. It is just what one might imagine a little out of the way diner outside of Yellowstone might look like--small, on a bubbling creek with lots of picturesque outdoor seating tucked away in the woods. She should not be in the hospitality business. They only take cash, and the card where that is printed did not reach my home until after we were already on my way. Getting there toward end of vacation week we had a limited amount of cash, just planning on charging everything along the way. Very stressful to try to get cash, and the owner was so rude about it. Got it settled when my son arrived. Owner's husband, who was very nice, told me that the card we had asking for deposit said "cash only" on it. When I showed ours to him with no "cash only"on it, he said sorry, they had it printed on new cards but not old ones that they had sent me. I was going to let it go, but then the owner brought it up again and scolded me for not seeing it on the second card they had sent. That was the one that was waiting at our home when we returned.She then said she would have told me in her spiel on the phone. When I had called, she was very impatient, acting like I was bothering her. Maybe she usually says it in her spiel, but she had not to me. Her attitude was so mean. It literally ruined our stay.
