We walked into the restaurant and felt completely ignored. We waited at least 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge us and finally asked how many people were in our party. When we told them it was just two, we waited another 5 minutes before they said we could be seated. That was acceptable at first, but after being seated, we waited another 20 minutes just to place our order. Once we ordered everything, we ultimately waited an additional 70 minutes for our food to arrive! When the food finally came, it was just okay--definitely not worth the long wait. We were so frustrated that we almost left because of how long it took. We will definitely not be coming back, especially since the food wasn't cheap either! Place environment is not that fresh. This is a small local restaurant with a nice atmosphere for a date or family meal. This was my first visit and the experience was outstanding. The food was fresh, extremely delicious and presented well. You can see in the photos that I've attached how great the food looked. Our waiter was John and he was extremely attentive. The cost of the food seemed a little pricey but the quality and preparation were excellent. I highly recommend a visit to Campozino. There with a large group my niece's 25th anivercity. Loved the octopus and garlic shrimp appetizer's. The calamari was ok but the clams were on the rubbery side! This was our first time there and we were not disappointed. We ordered the clams casino as an appetizer. They were a bit mushy but flavorful. We then had the chicken in mushroom garlic sauce and the paella. Wow! We were blown away by the taste and portions. Also their red sangria is absolutely delicious. I had the Bronzino fish with shrimp and scallops special and could not believe how bad it was, especially since Portuguese restaurants are usually known for great fish dishes. The Bronzino seemed like someone had stolen all the meaty portions off it before arriving at my table, leaving only very thin portions of the meat interlaced with bones behind. There was very little edible meat provided, and it was over cooked and dried out. On top of that, one of the small, nickel sized scallops were spoiled. When I told my server about the scallop, his solution was to bring me out more of them. I had zero interest in eating more of the scallops in fear that they would also be spoiled. Always have had great meals/ service here, however went last week and my grilled fish was scorched crispy on the surface full of bones , and under cooked inside I was made to feel like it was my fault when I said something to the server that something was "off " about it, I was told " Well we tasted it and we don't see what's wrong with it, what exactly don't you like?" Not: ," I'm sorry sir Id be happy to get you something else" , which was said after I was questioned why I didn't like it. Like an instant argument ..it was more of an embarrassing attack on me. Not even the point , there a is a way to talk to people and not. plus couldn't even get the attention of the server at the bar since they did not even check in to see how our food was since they were so heavily entrenched in conversation with someone at the bar. Our lunch at Campozinos was surprising and excellent..... Why? you may ask was it surprising Simply because I dined at Campozinos not 4 months prior and the experience was so unremarkable that not only did I forget what I ate but the meal didn't even warrant a review. This time was completely different. Early lunch on a Friday and the bar side dining room already sees the bar filled as well as half of the tables and we were seated immediately. Basket of warm rolls, butter and waters with lemon appared soon after....Who does this anymore? Menu is comprehensive and well composed so we start with the octopus salad and clams in garlic sauce. The octopus is tender and seasoned well with toasted garlic,wine and herbs...a unconventional rendition of a Octopus salad but so satisfying. The tender clams in olive oil,white wine, sweet garlic slivers {soft and sweet,they must have been finished in a confit} cilantro with just a hint of finely minced chilis was one of the best I've had and the reason you hang on to those warm rolls...I sopped up every drop of the briny, garlicky sauce and wished there was more. Our main courses were next.... With a florish out came a Grilled Picanha laying on top of a clay roofing tile heated by a sterno along with grilled pineapple and rice,fries and black beans..Hokie perhaps but the Picanha was done perfectly rare, tender and juicy.A little bowl of drippings poured over rice along with the perfect black beans was a carnivore's perfect bite. I had my go to Porco Alentejana {pork with clams}. I've had this iconic dish from Nazaré to Newark and this over abundant version was one of the best. Tender cubes of fatty pork,fried potatoes in a slightly spicy and tart sauce was so satisfying however I did miss the crunchy sour sting of the traditional giardiniera and black olives that usually flavors this dish. A shared bread pudding and a couple shots of Espresso later,with a heavy doggy bag some thoughts.... Campozino is a more refined version of the typical Portuguese restaurant you'll find in Central Jersey with a far better menu,service,excecution and pricing that even their Neighbor right across the parking lot {Portuguese Fisherman}. We had an excellent meal with attentive service,great food and even a Sangria doggy bag when my wife couldn't finish the pitcher... Who does that? This restaurant has the feel of comfort and relaxation from the minute you walk in. The servers are amazing, the food absolutely delicious no matter what is ordered. And we were never rushed. Just an update from my last visit... We were a group of 8 for our Wednesday get together. After a round of Sangria ( get the red) this time we shared 3 apps. That being clams in a garlic sauce, yuka bites with sliced sausage and stuffed mushrooms. Popular entrees were definitely off the daily specials menu. For her, a pork filet mignon that had a wine fig reduction. And I chose a seafood rice dish. Both were excellent. For a dinner, you will have leftovers. Dessert- no chance this time. I gotta mention again that this area is quite popular for Portuguese food. I mean after all they are located in South River and there are 3 different ones in a two mile radius. Most people immediately think of Newark when it comes to Portuguese food. But South River is a sleepy little central Jersey town with some nice little hidden food gems! Campozino is definitely one of them. Campozino is beautifully decorated and instantly transports you to Europe as soon as you walk in the ornate wooden door. Service is very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We decided to order a couple of apps for four of us to share but had we known how big the portions here are we wouldn't have bothered. We started with the chicken kebabs and Portuguese sausage. Both were delicious. For dinner I had the skirt steak which was delicious and cooked perfectly. My husband had the baked octopus which I sampled. It was good but it's one of those dishes I prefer grilled. We also ordered a pitcher of red and white sangria...both delicious! Prices were reasonable considering the portion sizes. The two free parking lots were very convenient. Definitely will be back soon. read more

Unfortunately my family and I did not have the experience we were hoping to have. We arrived at the resturant for our 7:30pm reservation (4 people). our orders were put in by 7:40pm. Appetizers came out 8:26pm. Entrees did not come out until 9:30pm. When the Entrees did come out, they came out one entree at a time. So all of us at our table of 4 did not have all of our food until 9:45pm. (keep in mind, this is not an exaggeration, but the actual wait times) I understand a kitchen can get backed up, but our waiter did not tend to our table during that 2 hour span or kept us informed. We ran out of water, and after waiting a while we had to flag someone down. They didn't even refill our water, they just gave us a plastic water pitcher. For a resturant of this caliper ($30-$40 entrees), it would have been nice if they filled the glasses for us. Now the reason for the 2 stars.. My mom ordered a filet mignon cooked medium. After waiting two hours, her steak was served to her raw (not cooked at all in the middle). Rawer than a Pittsburgh rare steak, so we sent it back to the kitchen. The waiter offered a new steak, but at that point we were disappointed enough that we didn't feel like waiting for our food again. During this whole experience, not a single person on staff kept us informed or apologized for the wait time and raw steak. That's bad management. And only because of keeping us ill-informed and no apologies, we're not going to be coming back here. Campozino, you can do better than this. read more

We love this restaurant and decided to host my son's christening lunch here too. Everything was great from the staff the service to the food! They don't rush you, they are accommodating, and they make sure you're pleased with everything. They cleared the plates in a timely manner and everyone who came raved about their lunch. We had shrimp in garlic, calamari, salad, and yuca w/ linguiça. I really liked the sangria here...quite frankly, it may have been the best I've had a a Portuguese restaurant in the US. The rating fell from a 5 to a 3 once our main courses came out. My boyfriend dry rub ribs were just that...DRY. My bife à portuguesa was ordered medium and came out more than well done. My mom ordered grilled chicken and it was dry, too. Three people in our party ordered rodízio and it was sooooooo slow. All that came around was pieces of chicken and sausage for the first 15-20 minutes. They finally came around with a little picanha and they also got one piece of meat wrapped in bacon. Although their price is cheap considering what I've paid for rodízio in the past, they should have had what they advertised on the menu.. 12 different items. They were literally offered chicken wings three times and only saw about 6 different items with the chicken wings included. They just gave up after a while and started filling themselves us with rice and beans. On a good note, the desserts and espressos were on point. Being that most of the other reviews here are good, I would try this place out again. I am not too fond of Rodizios but I had an opportunity to try Campozino in South River and I am glad I did! The restaurant sits in a large building off Main Street; it does not have parking but there is a convenient lot across the street. As you enter the restaurant you are embraced by the mouthwatering smells from the kitchen and grill and the slightly louder than usual crowd. There is a large bar that takes up most of the main dining area which after walking a little closer you realized is where the grilling is taking place! Right behind the bar counter!!! Nice surprise!!! You see how your plates are prepared if you choose any of their grilled plates. We sit comfortably at the bar and observe; there are tons of activity arounds us however our waitress quickly comes to greet us and get our drink orders out of the way. We study the long menu; I am happy to see that besides the usual appetizers found in most Portuguese restaurants such as Shrimp in Garlic Sauce and Fried Calamari, they also offer Grilled Appetizers such as Chicken Wings and Chicken Shish Kebob. As Entrees besides the usual fares divided on the menu into Seafood and Fish, and Meats and Chicken; they have Rodizio or Charcoal Grilled meats that come with sides of collard greens, white rice, yuka and black beans. What an unusual combination! I am curious about an appetizer, Yuka and Mixed Sausage and ask the staff about it... It was confirmed that what is named Yuka on their menu is what I know as Yuca or Cassava, a very starchy root jam which I believe originated in Brazil, and I see the connection! I order this appetizer and my husband who is mesmerized by the Master Griller orders the Chicken Wings. May I say both plates are excellent! The Yuca plate consists in fried but tender pieces of yucca mixed with slightly sauté pieces of chorizo, a great combination! The wings, oh my! Are different but in a good way!!! They are grilled to perfection with just the right amount of sauce making them juicy, moist and very tasty! A delight!! Both plates are generous in portion and meant to be shared. We take our time at selecting our entrée and partake in conversation with some of the locals sitting at the bar. We finally shared Flamed Broiled Bacalhau or Codfish, one of my favorite dishes!! Another great plate!!! Simple and delicious! We passed on dessert because we were stuffed!! Maybe next time!!! What an amazing place this turned out to be!!! Hit or miss. Rodizio is not always available, grills broken they say. Calamari was like rubber bands. Not impressed.

Let me start by saying the food was very good and nice portions! We reserved a table for 8:45, and was seated with in 5min. Our server came to the table in about 5min took our drink order. When he returned we placed our dinner order. He did not return to our table until after 10pm once we informed another employee we needed our server. We asked himnto wrapped leftover and for a desert menu. He dropped off the menu and we didn't see him again. Lucky there was another gentleman who came over and took our desert order and my wife ordered an espresso. About 10min goes by and the gentleman comes by and asks if all was ok. I informed him we did not get our espresso. We see him proceed over to our server and yell at him that he never brought us our espresso. While the food was very good I would not return because of the lack of service. Our server only came to our tablento place our order, never came to see if we wanted refills or needed anything else. The newest addition to the culinary scene in little old South River. My first experience here I decided to go with the full rodizio & buffet. The menu is kept simple and pretty easy to understand. There is a full bar and all baking is done onsite. I've sampled a few appetizers throughout the evening and I tried the shrimp & garlic, picodinho mixto (pork cubes mixed with un-breaded calamari, etc etc). The calamari was the best of the three that I sampled. The Sangria needs work. Truly not the best in town. I could not say it was in my top 5. Not enough ice in this pitcher and one specific alcohol jumped out and slapped you in the face. I had to stop drinking after the first glass or I would not be able to walk. I was a little disappointed in some of the rodizio. Out of the 14 options, I only made it to about 8 or so. The first choice was the sausage. Very tasty and cooked well. The second option was the chicken leg. I did not like the fact it was dry and over seasoned. The third choice was chicken wrapped in bacon, again very dry. I was not enjoying the experience. Finally, I was able to get a great choice of meat (picanha) that I can enjoy and was cooked just right. Hopefully this was just a fluke this evening. When I return I want to try a different dish, it will take me awhile before I go back for the rodizio. Not everyone can master great rodizio. This will take some time. On a side note their buffet was delicious. The food there was well prepared. I can say I did not leave hungry.
