    Skirt steak tips
    Steven B.

This is a small local restaurant with a nice atmosphere for a date or family meal. This was my first visit and the experience was outstanding. The food was fresh, extremely delicious and presented well. You can see in the photos that I've attached how great the food looked. Our waiter was John and he was extremely attentive. The cost of the food seemed a little pricey but the quality and preparation were excellent. I highly recommend a visit to Campozino. My only fear about posting this review is that I won't be able to get a table when I need to return.

Campozino is on my date night rotation list and we are always happy with the food and service here. The skirt steak is very good (and this is coming from someone who is very picky about red meat) The pear martini is also excellent, even though most restaurants in south river are best known for their sangria.

Our lunch at Campozinos was surprising and excellent..... Why? you may ask was it surprising Simply because I dined at Campozinos not 4 months prior and the experience was so unremarkable that not only did I forget what I ate but the meal didn't even warrant a review. This time was completely different. Early lunch on a Friday and the bar side dining room already sees the bar filled as well as half of the tables and we were seated immediately. Basket of warm rolls, butter and waters with lemon appared soon after....Who does this anymore? Menu is comprehensive and well composed so we start with the octopus salad and clams in garlic sauce. The octopus is tender and seasoned well with toasted garlic, wine and herbs...a unconventional rendition of a Octopus salad but so satisfying. The tender clams in olive oil, white wine, sweet garlic slivers {soft and sweet, they must have been finished in a confit} cilantro with just a hint of finely minced chilis was one of the best I've had and the reason you hang on to those warm rolls...I sopped up every drop of the briny, garlicky sauce and wished there was more. Our main courses were next.... With a florish out came a Grilled Picanha laying on top of a clay roofing tile heated by a sterno along with grilled pineapple and rice, fries and black beans..Hokie perhaps but the Picanha was done perfectly rare, tender and juicy.A little bowl of drippings poured over rice along with the perfect black beans was a carnivore's perfect bite. I had my go to Porco Alentejana {pork with clams}. I've had this iconic dish from Nazaré to Newark and this over abundant version was one of the best. Tender cubes of fatty pork, fried potatoes in a slightly spicy and tart sauce was so satisfying however I did miss the crunchy sour sting of the traditional giardiniera and black olives that usually flavors this dish. A shared bread pudding and a couple shots of Espresso later, with a heavy doggy bag some thoughts.... Campozino is a more refined version of the typical Portuguese restaurant you'll find in Central Jersey with a far better menu, service, excecution and pricing that even their Neighbor right across the parking lot {Portuguese Fisherman}. We had an excellent meal with attentive service, great food and even a Sangria doggy bag when my wife couldn't finish the pitcher... Who does that? We love Campozino and I can't wait to explore their menu further..... I suggest you do the same.

Just an update from my last visit... We were a group of 8 for our Wednesday get together. After a round of Sangria ( get the red) this time we shared 3 apps. That being clams in a garlic sauce, yuka bites with sliced sausage and stuffed mushrooms. Popular entrees were definitely off the daily specials menu. For her, a pork filet mignon that had a wine fig reduction. And I chose a seafood rice dish. Both were excellent. For a dinner, you will have leftovers. Dessert- no chance this time. I gotta mention again that this area is quite popular for Portuguese food. I mean after all they are located in South River and there are 3 different ones in a two mile radius. Our service was excellent. You can tell they are experienced in the industry. It's good to be back again. Cost per person about $55 each. USC#13

I've been making this a normal spot at least once a month. Staff is always friendly, quality of food is usually consistent and the restaurant has a comfortable ambiance. Love their porterhouse and skirt steaks. Mashed potatoes and potato chips are delicious!

No buffet anymore. They added the very popular Rodezio instead and it's well worth it.

The parking was actually full when we arrived, possibly because of the bar using the same lot. But there is an elevated connected lot for the bowling alley that has plenty of parking. I have to say that the best thing about this place is the service: everyone was very friendly, and quick to attend us. Food was great, except maybe the flake fish (first course). Seemed more Spanish to me than Portuguese though. Portions were huge... actually had leftovers from a dish, which is the first for me from a tasting menu. The prices were reasonable In terms of why I'm giving this 4 star instead of 5: -we were seated at the "Chefs counter", but did not really have a view of the prep, which was really far away. Basically could just see the fireplace. The sister restaurant Heirloom is a much better chef's counter setup where you are seeing everything -Dishes seemed to be regular menu type dishes (just smaller portions), as opposed to super interesting types that you would expect from a tasting menu -Beverage pairing was okay... didn't really love the wines For these reasons, I'd likely return, but just stick to the regular menu/ experience.

Kind of felt the need to put that out there, it's not really a suburban location. The waitstaff is super friendly, has some jokes, multi-talented (they brought out the guitar a few times to wish some other folks happy birthday), and knowledgeable. The food is really good - everything I tried was just delicious. For the table, we ordered some calamari and empanadas, and both were good. Drinks were also tasty - that sangria was really good, and the mojito (love that they had it available, first of all!) was also a hit. I would double-click on that sangria, though. For my entree, I ordered their whole fish, which was not only delicious but HUGE. I ate about half of it and was full. Then my friend and I split an order of limoncello cake (I think that's what it was), which was on point, and ended w/ espresso, also good. Overall, everything about that place was great, and when I mentioned a Spanish place in Trenton the next morning to some guys I was with, one of them asked, was it Malaga? Now these are tapas so if you tend to eat a lot or you skipped lunch you probably will leave still a bit hungry. The prix fix price of 85 is a bit much I thought for the portions (quail was four small pieces, octopus had three pieces) but given the quality I would still go back. Service was good with water filled without being asked and we were asked if everything was good more than once. One thing to note this is is a very small place so the tables are very close. You will definitely hear conversations of your neighbor. So if you prefer more privacy this may be a problem. Tasca is an excellent addition that is unique in Montclair.
