Everything about my trip to Canard was stellar. My friend and I were so thrilled that we got a seat at the open Chef's area because we had a chance to watch absolute magic happening behind the counter. Every single person was so talented and meticulous with every detail. Food needed to be arranged and prepared just so, or it was unacceptable for them. Everything they put out was thoughtful art and unbelievably delicious. I posted pictures of each item we ordered with names, and there isnt a single thing we ordered that I wouldn't highly recommend. Was up in Portland for business and I spotted this place on Yelp, and it was confirmed as quality by the bartender at the hotel we were at, so off we went. The food was awesome. It is hard to admit, but the best thing on the menu was the eggs and mayo. Yeah, yeah, yeah, midwest salsa..., but the house made mayo was very eggy and went fantastic with the eggs. Duck Frites and Steam burgers are an excellent savory combination. The burgers are made ala white castle style but with more quantity and flavor. The real star is the duck itself, hence the name of the restaurant. The duck is moist and tender and opened my world to more than just Peking. Due to visiting for the weekend and wanting to fit in numerous restaurants/places, we booked this place for a quick bite and a drink. We got there at 5 and it was pretty empty, but started to bustle around 5:30. We only ordered a couple items: oeufs en mayonnaise, foie gras dumplings, garlic fries, and two steam burgers. The broth was sweeter than I would have liked (had what I thought were hints of nutmeg), but I did appreciate the pomegranate seeds on top to give additional texture. The dumplings had a great flavor. The garlic fries weren't real garlicky, but had a chermoula sauce to them. I'm not real sure how I feel about the chermoula sauce as it completely altered the taste of the fries. IMO, the fries would have tasted better if they were served with an aioli vs ketchup. The steam burgers reminded me of a smash burger with mustard + caramelized onion on a steamed bun. They were good for what they were. Overall, the dishes had flavor, texture, etc., but I felt like some of them were overly complex than they needed to be. Then again, that's likely what they were going for. We shared plates and everything was an OMG moment. The dumplings and that juice was the best of the best. I recommend trying some small plates to share. Our server was so lovely and had the best recommendations for food, wine, and even where to get drinks after dinner. We were new to both tartare and fois gras but we felt both were essential to order. The fois gras had a pho like broth served on top that just tickled my taste buds. I can't express what a great meal and experience we had at Canard. Our servicing team was friendly and attentive. Our first course was the Foie gras dumplings. In my 52 years I have only had a bite of food this incredible a couple of times. It is worth coming here for this dish alone. The Rabbit and Eel Patè was very good. Canard was a Portland restaurant that was highly recommended online, so I decided to give it a try since I was in the area. The inside is well-decorated, and although it was busy I was able to snag a seat at the bar pretty soon after I arrived. The service was friendly, and I was able to be helped quickly whenever I needed it. For the food, I decided to get the duck stack, the oeufs in mayonnaise, as well as the Heartless Rita. The oeufs in mayonnaise were good, as the eggs were cooked well and I liked the seasoning that they put on top of it. The Heartless Rita wasn't bad, not the best non-alcoholic cocktail I've had but it was worth trying out. The duck stack however, was by far my favorite and it is definitely a unique dish. The duck was delicious, and combined with the pancakes it was a very filling and hearty meal. I definitely recommend sharing this, as it is a lot of food. We initially made reservations for their sister restaurant Le Pigeon, next door - however, due to delays with travel, we were unable to make our reservation. We decided to stop in at Canard (at this point it was 8:30 pm on Sat night), and were able to be seated right away at the bar. I actually loved the ambiance at the bar - the bar area was dimly lit, open-kitchen style, and adorned with house plants and duck tchotchkes everywhere, so cute. Our bartender was very attentive and also made the most delicious drinks- I got the Thunderbird cocktail, the pineapple made it tangy and refreshing. For food, we shared a variety of menu items: - Oefs en mayonnaise: Delicious soft boiled eggs topped with trout roe, one of my favorite items of the evening. - Fig and goat cheese salad: Very well-balanced with the smooth goat cheese and tiny fresh figs. - Foie gras dumplings: Honestly I still think about this item every day. My husband said he wished we each got our own order, it was just that good. So savory and smooth, a super unique fusion. - Duck stack: If I were to come again, I would probably pass on this item. Having dined at Le Pigeon several years ago, I was excited to check out its sister restaurant, Canard. It was originally conceived in 2018 as a wine bar serving French bar food. What surprised me the most was the quality of food at such affordable prices. The best decision was to snag seats at the Chef's Counter so you can watch the magic happen right before your eyes. In the hour or so we were there, the pace of that kitchen literally accelerated to match the pace of orders coming in. Having reviewed what other Yelp Elites had ordered, we started with the Fried Cauliflower, followed by the Foie Gras Dumplings and then the Duck Stack. Without question the dumplings and stack were signatures and true stand-outs. I probably could have ordered multiple plates of dumplings and nothing else. I should have added the seared foie gras ($20 upcharge) on the stack, which would have made that dish even more incredible. I wish more than two of us had dined, so we could have tried more menu items. Much of the initial excitement about Canard was due to the Steam Burger, which resembles a White Castle slider cooked with French onion soup base. The Garlic Fries I ordered along with dessert were incredible. Watching these being made continuously for the Steak Frites became almost hypnotic. And they didn't disappoint. We closed our evening with Blueberry Pie Parfait. It's fun to see a soft swirl machine in a French brasserie. The craft cocktails were awesome, especially the Mr. Pink. Gosh it took us so long to try this place when we literally live SO close. Can I just say, I am obsessed with fries and the fries here were AMAZING. My leaf eating self would literally would go back here just for the fries to be honest. We had early reservations - aka 4 pm on a Sunday - with my husband and his parents. For my main I got the lasagna which was also good, but one of the cheeses was prettyyy overpowering which prevented it from being great. The cheese was the lightest foam on the top and it made the dish feel so vegetable forward and not even the slightest bit heavy. Every month, I land in Portland for business, and I always make time for one or two visits to Canard. Such a fantastic experience at Canard this past week. You must make a reservation if you want to visit Canard as there is limited seating but after your experience you won't be disappointed. When making a reservation, it did require me to put down my credit card and if we did not uphold our reservation they would have charged me $25 per person on the reservation. We were seated right away when we arrived for our reservation. We had a party of four and had no idea what to order or how much food we would need. Our waitress told us not to worry and to make a list of the food we were interested in and she would tell us if it was too much or if we needed to order more. We ended up ordering the baguette that comes with homemade butter, and flake salt. It was pretty amazing and was split by all four of us. The next portion was split by three people and it was the Roasted Carrots that came with cherry bbq, macadamia nut, tahini. It was an interesting combination but it was very good. The next portion was split by just two of us and it was the Burrata that comes with apricot, pistachio, flatbread. It was pretty amazing and probably my favorite. The fourth portion that came out was split by two people and it was Foie Gras Dumplings that came with spring onion, kumquat, scallion. I didn't personally have this portion but heard it was definitely something to try. We thought we would end the night with Garlic Fries with chermoula ketchup, asiago but ended up getting some Steam Burgers as well. All the food was amazing and we were for sure filled up. 3.5 stars Canard has everything I look for in a dining experience - an innovative and fun menu, unfussy vibes - and while there wasn't anything glaringly wrong with my meal here, it was just very lackluster especially when this was the dinner I looked forward to the most during my trip to Portland. It was good, but nothing to write home about. The menu is decadent and right up my alley: foie gras, chicken liver, duck eggs. We started off with the baguette ($6) and the foie gras dumplings ($23): apple butter, black sesame, peanut. The foie gras lost much of its decadence in dumpling form. I also found the dumpling wrapper to be a little too thick for my liking. Good in theory but a little lacking flavor wise. Canard is duckcentric so we ordered all the duck things galore. We ordered the infamous duck stack ($18.50): pancakes, duck gravy, tabasco onions, duck egg. This was a whimsical take on two things that seemingly don't belong together: pancakes and duck. The duck here is prepared in ground meat form so this was a mild tasting dish for those averse to duck. Ideally, this dish has a lot of potential for fun because who doesn't like pancakes, but in dinner form, it loses a little bit of steam. I also found the duck to be a bit too chewy for my preference in the duck frites ($29.50). ''Twas good, but chewy, so no thanks. While everything was good though not great, the biggest dud of the evening were the steam burgers ($30 for 6): pickles, onion, mustard, American cheese. These, I think, are supposed to be an ode to the cult favorite - White Castle burgers - and while the version at Canard mimics it's predecessors to a T, there's nothing imaginative or new about the version here and therefore a very mid choice for a supper time entree. read more

Probably the best service we have received in the city! I wish I had gotten our waitress' name! She was attentive, knowledgeable and hilarious! The food here was divine and the experience was even better. We sat at the kitchen bar and honestly, I will always request a spot like this at any restaurant that offers it. The trout roe was a burst of salty goodness that complimented the dish brilliantly. We actually used the baguette to soak up the Mayo after we finished the eggs. 4.5/5 Creamy chanterelles was my favorite dish! I had never had spoon bread before but it was described as a cross between porridge and cornbread. Slightly sweet and served right out of the oven so it was steamy. The chanterelles were savory, salty and melt in your mouth. Topped with the honey butter and smoky maple... my mouth is salivating just thinking about it! 5/5 Steamers and garlic fries were also incredible and my partners favorite dishes. Simple yet so tasty. The slider like dish is ooey gooey cheesy and the added mustard and onions reminded me of an elevated white castle. It was very familiar but done so well. FOOD We came for a weekend dinner and didn't have a reservation. They were able to seat us almost immediately at the bar. We ordered a dozen oysters and it's super fresh and buttery. Probably one of the better oyster platters we tried before. The steam burger that we got were pretty decent but it's as good as you can imagine and nothing too special. The duck stack. Holy smokes. I've never tried anything as delicious and intricate as this dish. The buttery pancake matched perfectly with the savory duck sauté. Highly recommend this dish. The dessert was a whole other level. It was a specially for the week (?) and it's pistachio ice cream in a chocolate Bundt cake. It was refreshing yet not overly sweet. It's definitely a must have during your visit here. SERVICE We sat at the bar so the service wasn't your typical experience. The bartender checked up on us very often and made sure our cups were always filled. Wow, this place makes simple basic traditional French food so perfectly. To witness such perfection and the way food should be is to experience something so great. The cuisine was fabulous! The chicory salad with cara cara oranges was a delicious blend of flavors that came together w/ the dressing, maybe could've gone a little lighter on the amount of dressing, but that's just me. Taller half had the braised rabbit and I had the duck fritte. The sauces for both were delicious. The chef knows what they're doing. The red wine mushroom reduction on the duck was complex and perfectly seasoned. The sauce on the rabbit, too, had the flavors of a slow cooked mirepoix with some tomato and herbs. No one flavor stood out, but all the flavors combined into sublime yumminess. Should've ordered bread to wipe up every bit of those sauces! We were both stuffed but given everything so far had been so good, we had to try a dessert and we were not disappointed. Coming from the Bay Area, and for level of cuisine, this place is a bargain. Came here for a Saturday night dinner, and it did not disappoint! We were able to get a reservation the day before, which I definitely recommend doing because it does seem like a relatively popular place, especially for the interior being fairly small. There are so many interesting things on the menu here that I was excited to try. We got the Market Greens Salad, Fried Chicken Wings, Foie Gras Dumplings, Burrata & Heirloom Tomato. I think my favorite bite was the Foie Gras Dumplings -- so unique and flavorful. The salad was also a great choice and I loved the extra texture the crunchy quinoa added. The wings were also really delicious. Couldn't skimp on the dessert, and the Banana Butterscotch Parfait was one of the best icecream desserts I've had!
