After keeping this spot on my bookmarks for years, i finally got to try it out, mainly for their duck stack!! This place is a nice cozy spot, my friend and I were seated at the counter where we can stare at the kitchen. It's the greatest torture to watch the kitchen preparing each dish and trying to guess whether that dish is ours or not. But it's just nice to watch them prepare each dish as we enjoy the finished product. So we ordered the duck stacks, scallops and caviar, and foie gras dumplings. Unfortunately this was like our last meal in Portland and we have been stuffing ourselves. Their entrees are on the richer end of the spectrum. I loved the flavors but I was already full from the 2 appetizers. The foie gras dumplings were absolutely amazing, but some of my friends have commented on how the added puffed rice looked like maggots. The duck stack was very rich and heavy, best dish of them all, yet I feel so bad to not be able to fully enjoy it. Their menu isnt too big. Canard is no exception! I first came in the before times, when the menu was smaller and it was touted as the much cheaper, hip little sibling of Le Pigeon. Now that Le Pigeon has a tasting menu only, Canard is still cheaper, but overall not by a huge amount depending on what you order. I came with a group of friends, and we shared the nectarine & pistachio salad, the foie gras mousse, the garlic fries, steam burgers, and steak frites. The food was fantastic, especially the foie gras mousse, salad, and steam burgers. I highly recommend coming at happy hour for an early steam burger dinner! The garlic fries were OVERWHELMINGLY garlic-y - to the extent that my group couldn't eat them. If you are worried that one of your acquaintances may be a vampire, ordering them could be a great way to test that hypothesis. The steak frites were very tasty as well (the fries that came with them were delightful and well-seasoned), but not out-of-this-world like the foie gras mousse, salad, and steam burgers. The duck stack is also fabulous - definitely something to get at least once. Our group only got two cocktails, but they were very very good. Will get more next time! Come in and share some plates with a group, your taste buds will be happy! Of note: service was slow here and a little spotty at times. We had to ask for water refills and were late to a sporting event after dinner here (no dessert, few drinks) took over an hour and a half. They were very helpful over the phone when I needed to add an extra person to my reservation, however. Drinks: - Had a glass of the Sierra De Tolono Rioja Rosado Rose. I liked this one, it had a mild sweetness and easy to drink. I usually don't go for Rose but for some reason I was compelled to try this one out and am glad I did. It's very refreshing and was nice to sip on while I waited for my meal Food: - The Duck Stack is a must try. I thought it was such a clever rendition of the beloved chicken and waffles, but more elevated. The sunny side up egg on top was a nice addition. The yolk really added nice richness to the dish. The pancakes didn't feel too dense so I wasn't bloated after eating this dish - The Steak Frites was really good, I liked everything about this dish. The fries had nice structure to them, not soggy but also not overly crispy. The steak had perfect pinkness to them, and the mushrooms were done so well. I don't know what they did to get the mushrooms to have that much umami, they must've doused it in umami extract or something because it has so much flavor to them. This is also a must get, you won't be disappointed in this one - The Curry Hot Wings are also good. I was surprised to learn that the portions are pretty big for the wings. Usually when I get wings as a appetizer they're in small portions but these wings are huge. Everyone at my table got a single wing and it felt like getting two/three in one - The oysters were also very good. I was intrigued to hear that they were served with a mango type sauce with them, but honestly I didn't pick up much of the mango flavor. The oysters were on the smaller end in terms of size, but I think they rotate oysters by the season. If I recall correctly these ones were from Washington state. Though they were on the smaller end, the taste was not lacking by any means - The Oeufs En Mayonnaise was really good as well. There's so many textures with this dish, but it worked well. At first glance I thought the dish was doing a lot with the roe, bacon bits, and syrup (or sauce or whatever was glazed on it) but I ended up really liking it. Loved the chives and the bacon and the bursts of umami from the roe Ambience: - It's a small place, but the high ceiling didn't make me feel claustrophobic - I liked how the bar was arranged with the bottles displaying overhead and the wine glasses hanging under them - The floors and chairs looked worn out, but not in a bad way. It added a nice rustic/old timey vibe which felt more homey - It's a little darker in the space which I liked, and I also liked the lamps hanging from the tall ceiling encased in fish bowl shaped glass Overall: This place felt like a mix between an American bistro and a French café. For our Portland vacation I tried to get us reservations at Le Pigeon and missed out since they were booked out a while in advance, so I chose their more casual restaurant and was not disappointed! My SO and I both wanted the duck stack so we asked for a suggestion of another entree we could split and settled on the Foie Gras dumplings, the duck stack, and the duck frites. Their wine menu is impressive and I ended up getting two delicious glasses of cab franc to go with my food. The Foie Gras dumplings were decadent and fantastic. The Foie Gras paired with the plum teriyaki and dashi honey were perfect and I was sad when we finished them. The first entree to come out was the duck stack and it definitely an entree that can be split. It's rich and decadent and super filling. Highly recommend you book a reservation a large group of more than 4. Lucky we went in a group of 6 so we got to try so many dishes on the menu. My favorite would be the garlic fries, the fried chicken wings sauce was really good. I also liked the duck stack and the kumquat cremeux was just perfect to end the night. I am not a fan of these type of food like the duck frites (tasted like raw meat am not a fan). But I have to say all the food were really good, I was able to get a try of each dish and I liked it all. Wow. I had such hopes for this place and never been let down so badly. We only order two things and both were horrendous. We got the dumplings and the duck frites. First the dumplings were overly soft and came out cold, not room temperature or slightly warm but like it's been out sitting for 20 minutes. The duck frites is what took the kicker. For $41 dollars we expect something better. The fries were so salty we used water to wash off the salt. The duck was ok but it was 4 pieces, which if it was one of the best ducks we had would have been fine, and again so salty, but it was average and felt like we got the leftovers from another patron. Salt on the wound, this was a special event for my wife and I and I felt like I let her down with this selection. A fast food place would have hit home more than this. Utter let down. read more

Always get duck stack with seared Foie Gras. I tried most of the appetizers. Rabbit larb hit the spot. Good cocktails and wine selections. The music was slightly loud, so a little bit hard to keep the conversation, and the lighting was dark, so you might want to review the menu before you go in. So I was so sad to see Little Bird in downtown had closed but then I found out that Le Pigeon had a new sister restaurant right next door. I was also beyond happy to see that they keep most of their seats available for walk-ins, esp since I didn't make a reservation ahead of time. My recommendations - the duck frites and duck stack were both amazing. I thought I would like the stack more but the duck w the frites is perfectly seared crispy and cooked to that just a tiny bit pink level. It was PURE PERFECTION. The duck stack was delicious too - but the duck was ground, and while very flavorful and a great match to the pancake I prefer my duck seared and crispy. We also ordered the radishes w blue cheese (soo good!), the foie gras dumpings, and the baguette. The only thing I would pass on next time is the foie gras dumplings. The FG was only a hint and the thickness of the dumpling and competing flavors were a bit of a miss for me. Also got the foie gras dumplings and duck stack with seared foie gras, which were both extremely rich, delicious, and exquisite. We were able to do walk in on Sunday night 8/15/21. 30 min wait and we went over to the bar next door to play pool and bar games. Waiting time well spent and entertained! How this restaurant is rated 4.4 on Yelp is beyond me. I've been to plenty of great restaurants in my time and Canard is in my top 3 dining experiences. 5/5 for Food. Every dish was fantastic and perfectly curated. The flavors from the duck pancakes were out of this world and I still think about the egg appetizers. The dessert was also delicious. 5/5 for Drinks. Every cocktail was great, especially for the prices. Not once did I feel like the bartender skimped on serving the alcohol. The shakerados at the end of the night were especially memorable. 10/5 for Service. Our server Sloane was amazing. Truly one of the best waitresses I've ever had the pleasure of being served by. My husband dropped his napkin and in the blink of an eye she was picking it up, telling him to not even think about it, and replacing it immediately. That is the kind of service that you expect at Michelin star restaurants. She additionally gave great pointers on what to order for drinks and food. Honestly and truthfully, one of the most surprising and amazing experiences I've had in a long time. Firstly the food. What an experience. We ordered the Oeufs en Mayonnaise, Foie Gras Dumplings, and the Creamed Lobster Mushrooms. I challenge anyone to find better small plates. The stars were the dumplings. I could live on these. On another day, however, the mushrooms could easily be my favorite, they were that close and that amazing. The Oeuf was also amazing, each bite with the shallots and all the fixings was glorious. The cocktails. I ordered the CC De Luxe and my wife had the Thunderbird mocktail. The Luxe was very close to an amazing old fashion but with its own amazing identity. I would absolutely order this again, and again, and again...The Thunderbird, which my wife asked to be virgin as she was driving, was absolutely fantastic. Again, I would order this one repeatedly. I like the food if you consider it a casual French bistro with a duck specialty. My favorite is the duck stack which the pancake absorbed all the duck fat and fond and juice. Snap peas and asparagus salad was refreshing but that is something I could get anywhere. I don't like the steam burger and foie gras dumplings. I could barely taste any thing duck related in in steam burger. Foie gras dumplings were way too firm that I thought it is not cooked. Service was okay but slow. I arrived at 9:10 for my 9:15 reservation and it was actually available as a bar seat. However it took some time for the waiter to come. Over the meal, it took about 20 minutes for each dish to arrive and it had a awkward break as each dish took about 10 mins or less to finish. I've had great experiences at Le Piegon, and figured Canard couldn't be too far off. I have to say our dinner was overall good, with a couple little oops. We walked in around 6:20pm on a Tuesday and was seated right away. We ordered 4 things from the menu. The Oeufs en Mayonnaise ($12) was super yummy- it was like fancy deviled eggs, with smokey bacon bits and trout roe. Chicken Liver Mousse ($12) was also decadent, and the marionberry paired well with the pate. The Creamed Lobster Mushroom was a no for me. The cornbread was soggy, the honey butter was too much, and the whole thing just didnt work, from the texture to the taste. It was so sweet that it coulda been a dessert. It was $17 which I thought was pricy, and we couldn't finish the dish. Lastly the Duck Stack. I have mixed feelings about this dish. The sweetness and savoriness of this dish was unique, and the tabasco onion gave a hint of spiciness. The duck egg was a bit heavy and hard (like an overcooked chicken egg), and it didn't add any flavor profile to the dish. Visually this dish also wasn't very appetizing. I took my husband here for his birthday lunch in late November; we went to the one in Oregon City. I'd made a reservation with the note that it was his birthday, and I hoped they'd do something- anything- to mark the occasion. They didn't and that was disappointing. I guess I was hoping for a note on the table, a free dessert, a candle in the dessert we paid for, something... Regardless, the interior is open & bright with a minimal and modern decor. The tables are set up so you can see what others are eating, which I like. The food was wonderful: oysters on the half shell, crab rangoon dip, fries and a fried trout sandwich- all of which we shared. The cocktails were lovely as well: I had the 877 Gin drink and enjoyed it. Our server was prompt and polite. Nothing wrong, but we were in a festive and fun mood that wasn't matched, by any of the staff. It was so high on my list of places to visit during my next visit to PDX that I made dinner reservations to Canard a month in advance prior to my trip. I'm pleased to say that Canard did not disappoint! My sister and I had dinner reservations for 5pm on a Sunday. We requested to sit outside. If you're looking for more of an ambience ask to sit inside, which is a lot more elegant, of course. Otherwise you'll find simple chairs and tables placed outside on the sidewalk facing Burnside St., but hey, it didn't take away from my experience. Customer service was great. We had a main server, who was very friendly and attentive. There was another server that checked on us periodically as well. I appreciated how there was no shortage of help. The food was excellent and exceeded my expectations by far. We shared the dish with artichoke and kale and the duck pancake with foie gras. The duck pancakes with foie gras has made my list of the top 5 best things I've ever eaten. Funny thing is that another dish on my list also consists of foie gras. Notice a trend? With that said, do yourself a favor and elevate the dish with foie gras. It's worth the splurge. Aside from the duck pancakes being rich and decadent, I thought I tasted an underlying flavor of plum sauce or hoisin sauce the dish some sweetness. The artichoke and kale was the perfect side to accompany the duck pancakes. The dish was baked with gruyere, and it had a nice cheesy crust on top that gave it a crunchy texture. And the French fries may be the best I've ever had (which is high praise coming from me since I don't love fries). I could eat them everyday. We bellied up to the bar and ate there. It was cool to be able to watch the food be prepared but the actual counter and seating space were very crowded. It was the case for almost every table in there though so don't expect to have tons of elbow room going in. The only reason this was a 4 star not a 5 star for me was the service. Finally got to try the famous Canard. It lived up to the hype! We stared with oysters, the mignonette was delicious! The persimmon caprese was a great spin on a classic dish.
