So much fun and highly recommend! The girls and I arranged for this activity on Saturday afternoon and we were pleasantly surprised. The space itself is so cute and organized. You start buy selecting the scents you like. They had so many to select from like Santorini, Cannabis, Coffee Beans, Strawberry Guava, etc. You then get to pick your vessel. I think the cheapest one was $36 and the most expensive was $50. They have a good variety to pick from and I loved the colors! After you write up your list, one of the workers will go through and help you select the perfect combination. The technique they use to smell the mixture is so smart and not at all what I thought they would do. LOL They allow you to mix up to 4 scents. Once you pick your 4 scents, you get to start mixing it yourself! This was a tad stressful but fun it just keep experimenting. After mixing up your perfect scent, they poor wax into your vessel and you pour the scented liquid into the wax and stir. It takes about an 1hr - 1.5hr for the wax to harden and you can either pick it up on the same day or the next day. We spent about 2 hours working on our candles and it was so much fun! This would be a great activity for bachelorette, bridal shower, birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, or just a fun girls outing! I would definitely come back!
Took my grandma to Candles on Tap as a fun weekend activity. You start by smelling all the scent options and writing down your favorites. You pick candle jars from a variety of colors and sizes. Then the staff help you pick a scent combination that goes well together. Delilah was really helpful with this! You get to measure out your own mixture and mix it with the hot wax. Overall this was a very cute and fun experience. My only criticism would be the prices are a bit high with the smallest jar starting at $35.
My group had a really fun time making our own candle. Parking: parking is very, very difficult. Especially on weekends. It took 20 minutes to find parking. There is a lot on Voltaire and a lot on E, plus street parking but everything was full. I would suggest just sitting in one of the lots and waiting until you find a spot. Location: it was a bit tricky to find. It is not located on the street side. It is located behind a brewery/near a Pilates and Wells Fargo bank. There is a small side opening by the coaster train tracks. Process: You grab your clipboard, smell the scents and write down your faves. I would put a star next to your top four. Then you pick out a candle $40 for large and $36 for medium. They also have reed diffusers. The staff will ask you what fragrance you are interested in to help you pick your overall scent (flowery, fruity etc). You can choose up to four oils per candle. Then you pour the oils into a small container, stir and smell as you are adding, and then pour this into the hot wax into your candle holder and stir it all together. You have to wait 90 minutes for your candle to set. I would suggest visiting one of the restaurants in the area. We love our candles and it was a great experience. Good for kids too!
We had such a great experience here! It was so fun making our own candles. They have a variety of scents and make it fun! And if you're undecided like I am, they help you out. The person that was there today was so friendly and kind. We were running late because of traffic but she was understanding. We ended up getting four candles as they had a promotion for buy 3 get one. I will definitely be coming back!
My best friend was the person who first introduced me to this place, and I'm glad he did! I brought my little sister recently for her birthday (I recommend making an RSVP, especially if it's a weekend). Anyways, we went in on a Sunday and it was relatively busy. Despite that, we were seating quickly and someone was available to quickly walked us through the process. So you get a piece of paper and you get to smell the different candle scents they have lined up on one of the walls. You make a note of your favorite ones, then select which candle jar(s) you want. At the time that I went, they had a deal where if you buy 3 candles, you get 1 free. This deal could be split between 2 people, which was great! The candles are pricey though, with the jars ranging from I THINK $35, $40, and $50. They also offer reed diffusers as an option. After making a note of your scent and bringing your jars back to the table, a Scent Specialist will help you combine different scents to come up with your ideal candle scent. What I really enjoyed was that our Scent Specialist assisted us, but also gave us free rein to mix and smell the oils as much as we liked. She made the process really enjoyable and was beyond patient with us. I also liked that we didn't feel rushed at all! Once you get your scents mixed, they will pour it into the candle for you and then you get to name your candles! Note that the candles will need about an hour to set, so you would have to go back to pick them up, but the location of Candles on Tap is so close to so many things, it's easy to kill an hour. If I could offer one comment or suggestion, it would be that I wish the candle jars had that rubber thing that acts as a stopper, because the lids do not really stick to the jar and it kind of slides.
I came here for my mom's birthday and had the best time! The business is on the 101 right behind the main street. Parking can be a little tricky but there are parking lots just around the corner. When you walk in, you will see the bar where you create you custom candle, the wall of scents to choose from and a cute backdrop in the back to take photos! The staff was super helpful with how it all works! Both my mom and I went down the whole scent wall choosing our favorite scents. They have the cutest candle jars to choose from too, with all different sizes. Once we were seated, we were helped in creating our perfect scent by letting us smell the scent combinations and finding what we loved most. Then we added our scents to our soy candle and came back a few hours to pick up our candles once they were ready. Overall, it was a great experience!! It's a perfect activity for Mother's Day or a date night!
The experience was amazing and service was immaculate. 4 stars only because my candle wax is separated when I got home and opened it up. I'm SO bummed because the experience was definitely worth it. I agree with a lot of folks - yes it can be pricey, but you're also paying for an experience. Erin was our candle specialist and was the absolute sweetest and most helpful! She made our experience personable and memorable. We booked our reservation for 12:30PM on a Friday so it was not busy at all. I get everyone wants that personal experience and more time with the candle specialists, but you can't expect top-notch attention when they have other customers to assist, so just be mindful of the booking day/time. Erin walked us through all the scents and added her recommendations, which was incredibly helpful. Her instructions were clear and she helped us through the whole process. We had our candles set to pick up another day. We came by and picked up and the place was packed (Sunday) so I can see how the experience can be less personable, however, what can you expect from a place that is running around helping so many people? They need a break too. We picked up our candles and I was sad to say I came home and the scent was not as strong (maybe I didn't add enough of the oils) and my wax was separating from the container.
Candles on Tap was a great experience! Went here for a double date and were welcomed by the staff. We were given clear instructions on the process. We picked out our favorite scents and the staff helped us come up with a concoction that made the most sense (). We then picked out our candle jar. You mix your oils together yourself and pour it in the hot wax and stir. We returned 90 minutes later to pick up the finish product. Overall, it was a fun experience! I'd recommend adding an optional ceramic painting to make your own candle jar.
Strolling with a friend on a rainy afternoon and wandered into Candles on Tap. It smelled so nice inside and had good music playing. We asked employee Jenn what the place was about. She explained so well and before we knew it we each sat at the counter and made custom candles. We had such a fun afternoon and recommend this activity.
RUN, DO NOT WALK, to this place!!! As cliche as it is, it absolutely holds true for this place that the staff is honestly what makes this place fabulous. What an amazing selection of scents for your custom candle creations, and they walk you through the whole process. The venue is decorated very cute, VERY demure! No but in all seriousness, we had an amazing time! Delilah and Erin took care of us, and they both were fantastic !!! Can't say enough good things about them, and they were patient throughout the whole process from our selection of scents, to them doing a custom mixture of your selections, to the actual creation of the candle. When I came back in to pick up the candles, they were packaged so well and they even remembered that it was birthday the day we made them, so they gave me a very cute birthday candle. Absolutely will we be back for some holiday candle gift making!
I stumbled upon this gem while eating lunch across the way. I saw the signage and had to see what it was about. I called and was able to snag a spot for my daughters and I. The decor is cute. The staff was friendly and helpful. We perused the scent wall before choosing a few different scents. The gal helping assisted us in combining them to create magical scents. My kids had a blast. My only complaint was that once we burned the candles, the once magical scents were lacking. The candles smelled like nothing. Definitely a cool experience, but at almost $200 for scentless candles, it's a one and done type of situation.
Was surprised with reservations for Valentine's and this was something I've always wanted to do! We were immediately greeted and sat at the counter and waited for another party to settle in. We were then given an explanation of how the experience works! First, you're able to smell and write down your favorite scents and fragrances that they have available - and they have a wide range! Afterwards, you choose your jar and then you get seated again and the employee will read your list and help you out to narrow down to your top 3 scents. You then are able to pour and mix those 3 scents and once you are finished, they'll take your candle jar and pour hot wax where you then pour in the fragrances and mix! You even get to name your candle! It takes about an hour and a half for the wax to cool down before you're able to bring home the candle - so have a plan in place while you're waiting! There's several shops and restaurants in that street to explore and it's also right by the coast! Overall, I enjoyed this experience and the employees were all very kind and welcoming. The experience can be pricey, we paid $40 per candle (depends on the jar you pick) but definitely worth it if you love candles and want to make your own!
We came in her today to check it out and will definitely make a reservation on Yelp for next week when the next set of kids are visiting. We smelled a bunch of candles and my fave was the Yuzu scent. I can't wait to pick out a few more and make candles for myself and maybe a few holiday gifts! What a brilliant concept!

This place was awesome! Such a fun and unique idea, it is a bit pricey depending on the size of candle you choose. But it's high quality ingredients you get to use. Let me start off by saying Aine saved my candle! I had picked my favorite scents and a girl came over to assist. The ones I chose smelled great from the bottle together but when I tried mixing the oils myself it smelled absolutely terrible. Aine came over and helped me fix it so that I ended up with a scent I was happy with. I was a little upset feeling the other girl set me up for failure not giving me as in depth of an expert opinion. I'm so happy Aine was able to help me out because if it wasn't for her I would have left with a candle that smelled like poop. Overall this place was a lot of fun! You can definitely get a headache from all the smells though. But I can't wait to go back, thinking it would be a fun date night or even end of the year type of activity. read more

** Mask required ** A friend happened to see this place mentioned on the local news as we were looking for something to do for my friends daughters 16th birthday during these covid19 days. It was perfect, it was something different and we love candles! They suggested in making reservations to ensure a spot (social distancing) so that's what we did. We weren't familiar with the area so it took a few minutes to find the spot, which was located behind a restaurant. We were greeted at the door and brought to our seats. At that time you are given instructions how to start your candle. There is a scent galore along the wall. Coffee beans are placed in jars for you to clear your sense of smell for the next scent. So many choices! Once you write down what you like you return to the bar and your host will assist you with your scent selection. You have a choice of doing candles or reed diffuser. Also, at the time of our visit you could buy two and get one free, and you could mix and match. I opted for two candles and one bottle of reed diffuser. With the help of our host we got our blends put together and went off for a couple hours for our candles to cure. After a bite to eat we returned with our candles already bagged up nicely and ready to go. Are you looking for something different to do, this could be it! Check it out. My sisters absolutely love candles, so I thought this would be a perfect activity on our Carlsbad/San Diego trip. It was super easy to book a reservation online the same day we intended to go. We had so much fun smelling the different options and writing our favorites on a list. Then the ladies working the candle bar helped us to combine scents from our top favorites; they were so patient while we were deciding between two variations. We made our blend of scents and then the staff poured the hot wax into our chosen candle jars. The jars come in a variety of colors with a few differences in prices based on size; I got the $40 Luxe iridescent flower one with a lid. We mixed the scent oils into the wax and then let them harden for the 90 minutes. In the meantime, we browsed the nearby shops and coffee and desserts. The ambiance is so cute with the black and white with green plant accents! Although if you are sensitive to scents, I wouldn't recommend since it may get overwhelming smelling the options and sitting in the space enveloped with lots of scents. I was fine for just the amount of time to pick options and to make the candle with a break outside in the fresh air for shopping. I went with Agave, Santorini, Sea Salt Orchid, and Sunflower for my candle. read more
TLDR: I really enjoyed this experience and would come again! My friend booked the experience for 5 of us for her birthday. We came a bit early to our appointment and we're helped right away, given our area and then told to pick the scents we liked. Then grab the candle glass. They had about 10 colors? Depending on size. Each candle can have up to 4 scents in one. So it was a bit hard to see what would mix well together, but luckily if you had a few that you wanted to mix together the manager was pretty great at helping us figure out one or two more scents if need be. Mixing them together was a process, you didn't want to over do one over the other but finding the happy medium. Afterwards they pour your wax in and then you mix in your scent to the hot wax. After that you go to think of names for your candles. The ambiance of the place is super cute! They have a little area for photo ops and a ring light. The candles take about 90 mins before they are ready to be picked up. And they were definitely done in 90 mins! read more

Making your own candles is so fun! They have a wide variety of scents and candle jars to pick from. They also help you mix scents to come up with your very own unique scent. They offer a glass of champagne while you work and have lots of insta-ready spots to hangout at while you wait for your candle to set. Price depends on the size of the candle jar you pick. My husband knows how much I love candles so for my birthday he wanted to surprise me with a make your own candle experience! We are also newly pregnant so we decided to make our candles into gender reveal candles! I made a purple one for a girl and he made a sage green one for the boy. Prices were very reasonable for being able to customize your own candle. They have around 90 different scents to choose from and they help you find a mix that works for what you're going for. The price depends on what type of jar you choose. Overall 10/10 experience. read more
What a cool experience. My friend and I were trying to do something different. Making candles was a great idea. Instagram worthy place for all your photo and influencer needs. They have a huge selection of oils that you pick to make your own candles. They serve you complementary champagne. Takes 1.5 hours for your candle to dry after you make it. You come back and pick it up. 1 is $40 plus supplies. My friend and I did the buy 3 get 1 free. We were out the door with 4 candles for $155 (before tip). It may come off as a lot for a candle .... Such a fun experience that is unique and memorable! Creating a signature scent that can fill up any room was the best thing to do with my friends. The staff was so helpful and the steps were pretty easy! The only hard part was waiting 90 min for my candle to cool (but that's just me bc I'm impatient :P) The scents to pick from ranged from laundry to pineapple- so many to choose from! Such a cute spot for date night it's a pretty quick experience. The whole candle making process took about 30/45 min. And then you come back after 90 min to pick up your candle. Easy to do. My girl and I had a fun time at Candles on Tap! I honestly would not pick candle-making as an activity, but my girl proved me wrong on this one. Easily made reservations via the Yelp mobile app. There's plenty of free parking within walking distance of this business, which is convenient. From the moment we walked in, we were treated warmly. The interior of this shop feels just as inviting as the staff. So much so that After a few minutes inside it felt like we were visiting friends. A few sips of bubbly likely helped my perspective. Haha! Lots of scents to choose from. And lots of candle jar options too. The staff offers helpful suggestions and sets you up to mix your scent selections. Seems like this would be a fun activity with a small group too. Make some candles. Drink some champagne. Then grab sometime to eat. Go bar hopping or hit the beach. And when you pick up your candle, you have a sweet smelling momento. We made a day of it with a noon appointment then had lunch nearby and even squeezed in some beach time before returning to pick up our mostly chilled creation just before closing. I'd recommend coming back the next day if you want your candle to be completely solid. We were heading out of town the next day so that was not an option during this visit. So yeah I dug making a custom candle. And if my girl wants to make another one, I'm down to do it again. read more

Amazing experience ! I brought my baby cousins here for a weekend trip to SD and thought this would be a fun stop for our girls trip. The candles are on the pricier side between $30-$40+ (not including tax and tip) per candle depending on the size container you want, but the class itself includes the staff taking the time to help us find what scents we want in our candles, mixing the scents, and prepping the candle for drying. They also have options to make reed diffusers as well, but we opted for candles. The overall experience was extremely pleasant, everyone helping that day were extremely kind and patient, and we were even offered champagne . Our wait for the candles to dry did not feel long at all. There is a taco shop across the street, as well as a lobster shop down the street that we hit up in the meantime. Since the candles are catered to our own personal preferences, the candle I made here is by far my favorite compared the store bought collection I already have at home. Literally nothing compares !! If you have time and would like to make your own personalized candle, I highly recommend you come check out this spot ! read more

We came in here unexpectedly on a Sunday afternoon and were able to sit down without any reservations. They let me bring my two dogs in as well! We picked out our scents and make our candles at the bar with some complimentary champagne. The total event took only about 15 minutes but it was a very unique experience. We got to pick out the candle containers and name the candles after we made them. All of the girls working there were very kind and helpful. Good place for a date or a girls day. There are a lot of "instagrammable"areas. It had a very cute ambiance with fun music. I would highly suggest checking it out! read more

Went here for the first time the other day and what a fun experience! They give you a little clipboard to write down your favorite scents. Then they bring you the oils and let you smell different combinations of the scents you wrote down. You mix the oils yourself and pour it into the wax. You also get to pick out your own jar for the candle. Overall a super fun experience. Definitely worth the small drive and price point! read more

I did an Elite experience here, but my fiancé decided to join me and book his own appointment to make candles with me and paid out of his own pocket. He got the buy 3, get 1 free deal, so I helped him make 2 since he couldn't do all 4 by himself. Since I was making my own for Yelp, I didn't realize that my fiancé was only making 3 candles and not getting the free one. We realized that when we got home and he said that when we go pick up our candles the next day, we'll just ask to make one more to get our "free" one. We got there the next day and we told the girl at the front what happened, she said she would go talk to her boss. She came back out and told us that her boss said that there's no time slots for us to make candles today and they only have enough jars for the Yelp Elites for that day. We told her that my fiancé paid over $100 for 3 candles, we'd like the free 4th candle, so it can be any jar, it doesn't have to be the clear one that the Yelp Elites get. She went back in to check with her boss, and she came back and said that her boss said it's too late, we should have done it yesterday. My fiancé was very adamant and asked to talk to the manager in person and said "fine, can we talk to her about getting one of the already made scents on the shelves?" The girl said she'll go check and she comes back, the manager comes out and gives my fiancé a dirty looks and doesn't say a word to us, didn't apologize or explain to us in person at all, she just ignored us, so we picked a random vanilla candle from the back of their shelf and left with our other ready candles. While we had a great experience and the staff were nice when we were making candles, the way the manager handled our situation wasn't very professional, especially when my fiancé spent over $100 for the cost of candle jars and the candles. The day before, I had asked the staff if people have events there because I wanted to get 14 of my girlfriends to do a bridal shower at the place, but after how the manager handled the situation, we won't be back and I won't have an event there any time soon. read more

I loved this entire experience! From being greeted with such a warm and welcoming atmosphere to smelling your finished product was amazing. Erin was such a fantastic "scent stylist". Her aura, vibes, and knowledge were everything my friends and I could've hoped for during this new adventure! Prices were incredibly reasonable for the experience we endured, I paid $36 for the whole thing! 10 out of 10 recommend this activity for girls day, we will be back as soon as our candles are empty!! read more
I first heard of this place through a viral Tik Tok video and was thrilled when I found out it was in my own backyard! The interior is cute boho style and very photo worthy. Make a reservation ahead of time and they'll have your spot saved at the scent bar. The complimentary champagne was a NICE touch. I loved going through all the scents on the back wall and wrote down so many favorites I was relieved when the scent stylist helped me narrow it down. I loved mixing the 3 scents I chose so it was my own perfect ratio of wine/pistachio/sage. It smelled even better than I remembered when I went to pick it up after the 90 mins passed. I spent some time getting lunch and checking out a thrift store across the street. The candles seem a little pricey but you are paying for the candle AND the personalized experience. What a lovely experience making candles for the first time! Beautiful, relaxing interior with dozens of scents to choose from. Really fun and interesting to see how combinations of selected scents work together. I really like the selection of scents that there is! And getting a complementary glass of champagne helps make the experience even more calming. From the time you mix your combination of scents into the wax, it'll take about an hour until the candle will be ready for pick-up. Come up with a fun name for your new scent. :) A bit pricey for something you can pick up at a Marshall's or Home Goods for a fraction of the price, but worth trying for the customization and the experience. I'd recommend doing this with the girls or for a date. Definitely something to try. read more
Amazing, fun and scented experience! When you walk in, be prepared to be overwhelmed with scent. The store is designed and decorated in a very soothing, zen like way. Met the owner, Chantel, and the assistants, Kylee and Casey. All three were very nice, polite and professional. I took a friend and we were met with our names and a "reservation" sign at the "candle bar". We picked our containers ($40 - they were out of the $32 and $36 ones). Then took our paper/pencil and clipboard to determine our scents. Be ready... there are SO MANY SCENTS! My nose pretty much stopped smelling after about 5 minutes in the shop, so I quit looking after g's. My friend smelled every single one of them. We found out later that there is a shaker of coffee beans which cleanses the smell and "restarts" the nose. A sign perhaps? We each picked 3 scents - chai, bourbon and orange zest for her and lemongrass, basil and honeysuckle for me. Have to say that the first was perfect in the orangish candle holder. We "mixed" our scents with a spoon to determine the right "scent" for our candle. Once that was done, Kylee poured the wax into our containers and we poured in our scent and stirred. The candles take 90 minutes to set, but they closed an hour later ... so we need to go back and pick them up. Loved the experience, didn't love the price... as I was unprepared for it - most of the pics I had seen had different pricing. Sticker shock. However... Many candles are in that price range AND you get to customize. What I liked - the service, the atmosphere, the containers and the scents. Chantel did an excellent job decorating. You could spend time just looking at all the fun decorations and signs. And... swings! The scents are AWESOME! And... guys will love it too. There are masculine scents like hops and coffee. I would have liked to know about the coffee shakers before I got to the scents. Was expecting an "experience", where I could chat with my friend while creating. We did chat, but were done in about 20 minutes. Glad I didn't bring wine and appetizers like we take to painting. I did find a great mule and food next door. PLAN so you can create your personal candle, then go next door for food while waiting. read more

Hello, depending on how many people in your party, we like to give 35-45 min for candle making. The candles then cool for 90 min before same day pickup. You may pickup another day as well.
