We actually used the store owner, Juli, for interior design of our complete remodel. She has vast experience in furniture, space planning, and all the current design trends. We also had her select all paint colors, lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, flooring, tile, you name it if it was a textile or a color she was selecting it. Juli uses her vast network of suppliers and passes along her discount pricing to her clients. I love this store. The furniture is beautiful, but a bit out of my price range. Still, I enjoy looking at it. Customer service does not exist here, both the employees and a woman who appeared to be the owner of the shop were very rude, even going as far as calling my wife my granddaughter. You would think for a high end store here in the heart of Encinitas that they would make your purchasing experience unique, and in a positive way, not the opposite. Lets just say I walked down the 101 and received exactly what was expected from "grounded" , but from a different company. I was introduced to a woman by the name of Judy? Juliana? I can't exactly remember as I have tried to blank out this whole experience, I do believe she was the owner and she shrugged me off and acted like I wasn't good enough to be in her presence. After this I was ready to leave, but from my terrific lunch at Blue Ribbon, I saw two more couples walk in to the shop and subsequently leave as well, god only knows what they had to go through. Will I give this shop another chance? Maybe. Maybe not. There are plenty other types of high end shops like theirs, and if that was truly the owner, I would advise anyone not to purchase a single thing here. read more

Updating from 2 stars to 4: I had an poor initial experience when ordering a custom office chair for my wife for her birthday. They made some comments when ordering the chair that made me feel like a chair wasn't a good enough present for my wife's birthday, and I left feeling embarrassed. After leaving a review about it, both Juli and Doan made sincere efforts to contact us and apologize. They were both very gracious and emphasized that it was unintentional, and that they regretted any misunderstanding. All ended well -- I took receipt of the chair a few weeks later and Doan was extremely polite, helpful, and kind, further solidifying that it was a misunderstanding. We're enjoying the chair, and appreciate the good customer service along the way. read more

Bottom Line: Fun home decor, interesting gifts and great inspiration. I am not a fan of modern decor but I still love this store! Even if you aren't hunting for ultra ultra mod furniture you can definitely find some neat accent pieces here. They have high quality items that are ready to take home like placemats and barware. Plus, this is a great spot for gits. They have some really cool stationary and I was definitely wanting to buy some new lotion and body cremes as a gift (uhh, for myself). Also, I was totally lusting after a Hobo bag that had super supple leather and really fun rich colors. I started with an online transaction with Grounded, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the customized chair I ordered for my wife's birthday was substantially delayed in production. Over the phone Juli offered an alternate chair that was in inventory at the store. I arrived at the store and realized the terrific online presence Grounded has is surpassed by the Grounded bricks and mortar store. Grounded has a very interesting selection of furnishings. My husband and I walked into an empty store and despite seeing two employees, no one acknowledged us. We browsed the entire store and while there were some nice items we considered purchasing, we reconsidered given their lack of customer service. As we were leaving, a white couple showed up, and we could hear the staff welcome them immediately and loudly. I am a person of color so perhaps that played a role in their lack of acknowledgement. This has happened to me a number of times in the past so I am very aware of this type of treatment in retail situations. read more

Can't say enough about the store. My wife loves their furnishings, and has bought a large stock of Chilewich mats and placemats there. Today, while buying some new doormats, she tried on a few rings st the counter, taking off her diamond ring in the process. She left with her mats (but not her ring), realizing several hours later it was missing. She forgot having taken the ring off, and thought she had lost it elsewhere. After about 5 hours of increasingly frantic searching, without results, we got a call from Grounded, who picked up her name from the credit card receipt and tracked her down via the web to find a phone number to call. I only think it's fair I change my position on this company... I was able to get my issue resolved by a very patient employee and my opinion on these people has changed completely. I want to share a recent experience. We purchased a bird feeder that my 4 year old son adored. The cable provided with the feeder snapped less then a week after hanging it...needless to say the glass bird feeder came crashing down shattering into a hundred pieces. I contacted the store and they shipped a new one out the next day and only ask i provide a picture of the snapped cable. My son can't wait to get the replacement. Wonderful service.. ONe of the most unique shops. If you need a unique quality gift, this is the place. I got these wind chimes for about $60. Stationary for $12 and a necklace for about $50. I can not remember the owners name, but she exchanged a rug I had for about three months that was defected. She was extremely helpful. You'll like how they gift wrap things too. read more

IT'S THE LAW that they sell at the marked price so although we didn't press the issue, they were obviously not interested in fostering good business practices. Beautiful store. They have many eclectic and truly inspiring pieces of modernly artistic furniture. But the worst customer service I have ever experienced. They didn't acknowledge me whatsoever, no one asked me if I needed help and when I looked at them and smiled they simply looked away. I love modern decor. But I don't love this store! The Lady who works there is totally rude! There is a lot of furniture on display in the store as is usual for furniture stores. My 13 yr old daughter who was with me, sat down in a office chair & the lady told not to sit in it because people have to buy the chair..... Seriously! What should a person do? Perfectly curated little shop! There's no weeding through kitschy pieces to find the true treasures here - they've already been handpicked and perfectly laid out by the shop's owner. The store has greeting cards, mod furniture, and even -- my favorite -- air plants! (Julie even gave me print out instructions on how not to kill my new plant.) We have purchased many items from Juli at Grounded because it's our favorite furniture store in all of San Diego. I'd like to live in this place. Juli has such great taste and has curated a wonderful selection of mid-century modern and modern/contemporary furniture and decor. Grounded carries almost all of the major names and classic pieces (Eames, etc.). Their inventory is constantly revolving, and if they don't have something in store, Juli can tell you about it. She is knowledgeable and honest with her reviews (e.g., for example, she has told us not to purchase certain items because she doesn't find them to be very comfortable). Juli is also good at telling you when sales are coming up so you can save $ if time is not of the essence. read more
