I've eaten at the wyck a handful of times over the years and have bought take out from their bottle shop as well. I recently visited during lunch hours and had a quick delicious lunch with my wife. Parking was found easily on the side lot and plenty of seating was available. Since we were in a rush we sat at the bar. The bartender was quick to take our order which was a Chicken Caesar Salad for me and a Chicken Quesadilla for the wife. Both orders came out quickly and were good. The ingredients were fresh, portions were good and the flavors were just right for our simple lunch. They had Fiddlehead IPA on tap which was nice to see as it's one of the more popular and tasty somewhat newer IPA's in our market. On that day their tap list had a nice variety of styles. The Fiddlehead was fresh and hoppy so I would say they definitely get their lines cleaned. The inside may be a bit dated and a little dark, but for me the rest of the experience was just fine. Our lunch was reasonably priced and they have a lunch program where you buy 5 lunches and get the 6th free. It never expires so I'll have to visit again!! The bottle shop used to be a must visit and still kind of is. I used to journey up there to find some rarer domestic craft and foreign bottles, but they've scaled back their inventory overall and are a bit more unorganized then they were a few years ago. I hope they get that back up to snuff! Definitely a visit if you're in the area and in the need of decent eats and a good craft beer. read more

This has been renamed The Wyck, and most of the menu remains the same, but the food is different, and not in a good way, from what it used to be that kept us coming back time and again for years. Item after item I used to love on the menu is no longer prepared the same way. Very disappointing. Some menu items on their new website are no longer available, and those that are may very well cost a buck more than the menu shows. I've given them at least four chances to get their game together, and they just keep disappointing. Seems like the new owners have wrecked what used to be a great place. read more

Horrible experience with the restaurant tonight. They where not overly busy so not sure why so many issues: 1 ) waitress not attentive at all had to ask for more tea, she forgot sweetener and took 10 min to get it 2) ordered a BLT not toasted, she brought it out toasted not even noticing it and when I mentioned it she abruptly said well I told them. She did not see it was toasted !? 3) she took that back and spouse started to eat the BBQ chicken and it was ice cold. Had to call her over and tell her and she was nit real sure what to do so we asked for it to be corrected. They took the chicken back and brought back the same price that was cut warmed up. 4) when we asked for money off the "manager" / bartender refused ! 5) when asked to see him he continued to wash glasses, and take dishes back to kitchen and took 10 min and a 2nd request to get him 6) he can over with an attitude and we explained the issues and said that's they way it's going to be tonight read more

We occasionally frequent this place for the last 7 years. The service, drinks and beer list has always been consistent. The bartenders are great, always friendly and attentive. The food however has steadily gone down hill. Could be a lack of staff, leadership in the kitchen or a managers presence. We went recently and the place was pretty empty. My wife decided on the roast beef sandwich. It was good, the au jus though was over reduced and extremely salty. I had the fried chicken and opted for mashed with gravy. What came was a culinary sin. The plate arrived with two thighs and a small breast. No wing or drumstick. What? It also appeared to have been fried earier that day and reheated in the oven. Dry and luke warm is an understatement. I didnt even finish the breast. The most glaring issue were the mashed. They appeared to be instant and not from boiled potatoes and the gravy was sour. Like spoiled sour. I took two bites and the meal was over. Folks, taste your product. Take pride in what have us put into our bodies or we won't come back. Ever. Someone is going to get sick. Great bar & restaurant! The food was perfectly cooked & the waitress was super attentive. I got the Jack daniels burger, my son got the cheesesteak. Both came with homemade chips, and they were perfectly crispy! The burger was so good and juicy, and the cheesesteak was insane! We split the Chesapeake bay fries & cheese curds for appetizers too. Both were delish & perfectly cooked! I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. I def recommend & will be coming back! read more

Since the new owners have taken control of the kitchen this is the second time we have had the the Candlewyck's fish and chips. The first time they were fantastic. Crunchy coating on the outside, fresh cod on the inside and the fries where perfect, crisp and not over salted Tonight was the exact opposite, The fish coating was soggy and the fish did not seem fresh. The fries were crisp but way to salty. This is a local establishment for us, its about expectation and consistency. read more

Last time here I had the most delicious handmade huge veggie burger. It's been awhile but was there today and looking forward to a delicious veggie burger. What a disappointment! Two patties on a nice roll with tomato and fixings but they were awful! Spoke to the server who said she was going to talk to the cook. We didn't see her again until she gave us the bill. Yes, I was charged the full price for something not eaten. She said she spoke to the owner, who was doing the cooking and said they were the same veggie burgers. Terrible customer service! I grew up coming to the Candlewyck. Or just the "Wyck" as it's still called in my family. It had been at least 4-5 years since I had dined at the Wyck before tonight. The place has really been spruced up! It's much brighter than I remember - fresh paint and more lighting. Saturday night was busy but we didn't have to wait for a table for 6. I failed to take a pic of the Jack Daniels Burger but it was one of the best burgers I've had in recent years. My husband grew up going to this place so needless to say I want to like this place. Been here twice and it was not good. This last time it was horrible, I ordered their version of a French dip. It was inedible. The meat did even seem like beef and it as over salted. Not only that it came with a side salad which I tried to eat but just couldn't eat the wilted lettuce and watered down ranch dressing. I ordered 2 chicken cheese steaks with mushrooms for my kids, I usually don't order takeout for them and this was a treat. The rolls were rubbery and not fresh the amount of chicken steak was so minimal it barely coated the roll inside. The Gardenville and Farmhouse Tavern have fresh rolls and overfill the sandwich with steak, cheese and toppings; the quality and taste is so much better elsewhere; I am disappointed I did not decide to order from these establishments first. Had dinner here last night - this place is always busy and a local favorite, you don't need reservations, and they can accommodate almost any size party. It has a solid and diverse menu, plenty of craft brews on tap and plenty of TV's to watch whatever game is playing. read more

We came here from Peddlers village. My husband had the fried chicken, it was good but not "award winning ". My son and I had angus beef burgers with cheddar cheese. They were huge and tasty but mine was medium rare not medium. The steak fries were delicious and the portions were nice sizes. Pretty sure it was a brioche roll to boot. Stopped here after a day trip to Peddlers Village and I'd say it was a good choice. We had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated and it was due to being understaffed no doubt. I watched a waitress tell a guy who brought in his 2 younger kids she had no clue how long the wait was and 5 minutes later told new people it was 10 minutes. Overall the food was good and didn't take too long to get. Most of the table got a wrap and I had the cheesesteak. Waitress initially forgot my beer but when I reminded her she grabbed it. Candlewyck was a great local meeting spot with good daily specials and a mostly courteous efficient, friendly, bright, staff. But I will not be a regular any longer. After many years of dining here with family and friends, without any major issues, the multiple minor careless things finely got to me. Yesterday waiting for a take-out order of two-daily specials I ordered a double imperial hazy 9% ABV IPA and was given a glass of pale yellow, clear liquid. I tried it and asked the beertender which tap it had come from as this was not an IPA. His reply was "It was the most popular one on tap". I pointed out it wasn't hazy, too light colored, in no way a 9% ABV and was flat. He then said, "it was one of those fancy session beers". I explained session beers had a low ABV. He continued, "Oh, this is one of those other special types, everybody likes it". His replacement Bartender went and checked the keg while this guy brought out both to-go specials out on plates. When he was reminded it was a to go order he begrudgingly had the waitstaff repackage the meal. His replacement came back verified the tap was incorrect and this guys reply was, "Oh well, heh-heh-heh". I asked, "So your changing me twice the price for the wrong beer? He then said; "Heh-heh-heh, what do you mean I can't do a ring back". As I had already paid, didn't need the hassle, I just left. For good. Sorry for the diatribe and it may seem petty but this attitude and ethic does not belong in the service industry. It's been 5 years since I last went here, back then it was mostly a local haunt. The waitresses knew people by name, and it almost felt like family. This time was far different, I had the fish and chips. The salad it came with was tasty, a light mix of greens, and really the perfect size to start things off. The fish and chips, was only ok. The first 2 pieces of fish were tender; but lacked any real flavor. The batter wasn't attached to the fish itself, and just slid off the fish. The 3rd piece of fish was disgusting, I couldn't cut it with a steak knife, I literally tried. I notified the waitress, whom had disappeared for 20 minutes, and she showed everyone, but I still had to pay full price for my now ruined meal. Overall, I'm good with never going back. They missed the point of a good home cooked meal. The menu is pretentious and seems like their reaching to be a higher class, with appetizers in the $10-$14 range, and entrees topping at $24. We moved to Florida for 6 years, used to go to the Wyck 5 or 6 times a month prior to moving. Came back to the area for Thanksgiving holidays. Couldn't wait to go back to the Wyck, well what a disappointment. Oh Boy! We've been "regulars" for years (my editor-in-chief wants this to read decades). The service has historically been great ..... Note the qualifier,"historically". Not too long ago- some moron.... decided to mess with a formula that worked. Today is a sad day for me and my wife. It is the last day we will keep the "Wyck" in our rotation. (To be replaced by Giovanni's - see review) Here's a news flash - forget square plates, heavy silverware, gourmet burgers..... Etc. What happened to cheese steaks wings and pizza at reasonable prices with good quality???? Where did the Nachos go guys? Lost are the meatball Parm Sandwiches. Replaced by Tostitos and Flatbreads. While I'm bitching..... What happened to the old bartenders and the local "pub" feel? Whilst I waited for the "do-over" on my pizza that was soggy, I fumed and my stomach made the noises of a hundred angry women. Alas, the do-over hath arrived...... And it is as the pizza of old - twas - crisp and well made. (Is there an "A" team and a "B" team back in the kitchen?). We are in transition here - a lesson to be learned is,"be who you are and accept yourself for your warts and all - the Wyck decided on plastic surgery and now we are all missing the warts. One last note: I haven't brashly run off and chastised the Wyck, in fact my tongue was held for several visits (ok a dozen) following the "image" change. Now that is is clear that my old comfortable friend the "Wyck" is gone I am sad - so sad - and I sit here wondering if this is progress. To Hell with progress! read more

Guess what? Change isn't always a good thing. First of all, the Candlewyk use to have the best wings around. Well in plain English, they suck now. The so called 'hot' sauce is less than mild and there is barely any on the wings. They used to be coated, delicious, and messy, how wings are suppose to be. When I came here for the first time a year or two ago, I ordered a chicken cheese steak, it was great. Well I ordered a buffalo chicken steak tonight and it was awful. The chicken was in large cubes like it should be on a salad and the 'buffalo' part was just some sauce thrown on at the end. The chicken should be chipped. There was way too much cheese to the point where it was disgusting. The owners need to get around their heads that they do not own a fancy five star restaurant. No one who comes to the Candlewyk expects fancy, expensive, food. The wyck is a PUB! Burgers, cheesesteaks, sandwiches, the menu is too large as it is now, and the quality is suffering. The staff is awesome and sadly they are riding the storm as the wyck goes through a devastating patch of so called 'exciting change' Go back to the old way of things and I assure you no one will be disappointed. This little dive bar/ restaurant has grown on me. Don't let its appearance fool you, there's some decent food here. I highly recommend the 25 cent wing night. (I used to come here when it was 15 cent wing night!) The wings come in BBQ, hot and "insanity." You might giggle the first time you hear the name, until you try them. If you're getting the insanity, might as well do as my good friend 'milk boy' does and grab yourself a cold glass of Vitamin D for a chaser. Other notables are the Black and Blue burgers, giant-sized Chef Salad, and $2.50 heaping plate of cheese fries. You can most often find bar flies, groups of local old heads, soccer hooligans and the local community sport's team hanging out here. It's a fun place to catch a game and not be stared at when you laugh yourself silly. Obviously it's laid back so don't hesitate to let loose and blow off a long day's work here. There's a very special place in my heart for the crummy ole 'WYCK. First of all - they served me drinks when I was about 15/16 years old - but that was many years ago - I won't say HOW many. So a star for the underage mem'ries. It's also the place I had my first ever Rob Roy. You can get all the old school cocktails here - and beers on tap and in bottles. The food is surprisingly good and safe. They used to serve a tasty cheese ravioli - but that was a long time ago - not sure if they still do. Stopped in for lunch a couple of days ago whilst in the area on a camping trip with my wife. We had tried to eat at a local festival, but it was jam-packed with every other assclown from the city (me), so my wife and I drove to this little gem and were pleasantly surprised. Definitely a bit divey. Bar looked great, my type of place. Lots of crafts listed on the walls, jukebox, etc. We got a table and Jane served us. It looked like she had the whole floor and she was hustling, yet our drinks were always re-filled and she cleared our plates and took care of our table. Thanks, Jane! Food was great and cheap (for us anyway, used to NYC prices). We had the steamed clams, delicious. We also had the Reuben sliders on pretzel rolls and they were of the CHAIN! Keep serving those, whatever you do! I then had the wing combo with all the sauces (the buffalo and sriracha were my favorites), followed by the ribeye steak, medium rare. My wife had the steak sandwich. Everything was great. Steak was marbly and cooked correctly. Tried my wife's fries, they were crispy and delicious. No complaints!
