F and I have lived in Trenton since 2003 and have never been to the only authentic Irish Pub, Tir Nan Og! It isn't because we didn't want to, but it just wasn't on the radar. Thankfully, while participating in the Passport To Trenton Contest, F stopped in for a Murphy's. As soon as he told me about it I was hot on their trail. About a week later I finally made it. It was a late Wednesday night and Jude was manning the bar. It was pretty quiet when we arrived but surprisingly as it got later the place started to fill up. This is a really cozy spot where everyone feels welcome. There is beer on tap and plenty of Irish whiskey choices to wet your whistle. There's a dart board, live bands and friendly conversation. It's one thing to be reverent of history and another altogether to be bound by it. I don't know what's up with Patrick H; I'm a semi regular @ TNN and I find the Guinness pour, the friendliness and professionalism of not only the owner but the entire staff beyond first rate. I can't say if TNN has the best Guinness pour in New Jersey if not all of the US, but gentlemen with better palates and world travel than me attest to its excellence and assure that's the case. I've not had better here or in the British Isles. If you're looking for a museum (which reads to me like Patrick might have fixated on) - or faux hipster trendiness, look elsewhere. But if a jewel of a legitimate Irish pub with a great selection of proper Irish beers and ales, and an exceptional offering of carefully curated Irish whiskies, look no further. Recently rated the Number One Irish Pub in New Jersey, I made the trek back out to Trenton to partake in some true Irish flair on St. Patrick's Day. Man, did I make an awesome decision! The jawn was packed like a can of sardines. The crowd, the vibe, the music, the dancing, the chatter, the pints being poured, the shots of JameO going out, everything was perfect and made being here on St. Patrick's Day THE place to be. Owners Todd and Maureen were all over the place smiling and making everyone feel so welcomed all while running a tight ship. I scored prime real estate and was posted up at the front bar my hours here and was lucky enough to have the pleasure of the cute bartender Wesley I met here over summer pour me my drinks, and politely chat it up with that great smile of his. But all the folks that made the decision to make the Tir na nOg their spot for St. Patrick's Day, really made this night what it was and that was one damn good ol Irish time. Straight up 6-star worthy! Off the charts! This Irish pub is hidden away in Trenton, it almost blends in with the houses, but you don't want to miss it. When you walk inside, you are transported to Ireland . The owner is beyond welcoming and friendly, and you can really feel his passion of the Irish; and I'm not talking about any "fighting Irish stereotype," I mean some real beautiful pride from a strong-cultured people. No kitchen, but they are actually very relaxed about guests ordering in, or bringing food. Full bar with some amazing beer. I wish I could remember the owner's name, but we talked for a bit about different drinks I like and he suggested a delicious beer. So, my friends and I were going to the Sun National Center for an event, and they wanted an adventure. (Isn't there always adventure in Trenton??) Anyway, we found this quaint Irish pub in the middle of town, and had some beer. This place could not be more authentic Irish pub, right down to the barkeep with the accent! Total dive, but great atmosphere. I bet if you grew up around this place, you know everyone. I'd go back! Please note, I would not exactly recommend going here if you are unfamiliar with the area at night. If you get lost, you can quite easily wind up in a bad section of town. Holy cow this place is authentic. I thought that I had some Irish in me but these folks...the real deal with real musicians and a real Irish juke; have not even gotten to the stuff on the walls...I'm an amateur, vis-a-vis the locals here. We went to the "American" Irish place on Monday where our waiter was obviously from the Emerald Isle - after he chastised me about The Pogues being pop music, he told us about this joint. We went the following night and wound up closing out the week (as in seven days) with six straight at Tir Na Nog. Highly recommended as long as you're (or can act as though) a good Irish Catholic. Amazing and authentic Irish Pub! Went here a few weeks ago with family and I was instantly in love with this place when I walked through the door. They have tons of real signage from Ireland and old Guinness posters with the iconic Toucan. There was live music and the locals were friendly. The Guinness was cold, fresh and well priced. My friend and I basically moved into Tir Na Nog for a week while we were stationed nearby for some Army Training, so since this review could get a bit long winded here are the important bits: *True. Authentic Irish Bar. *Bartenders and Customers alike will greet you with open arms and full pints. *Perfect Pints of Guinness, with Smithwick's and Magners ready on tap as well. *Cash only with an ATM inside. *Great Live Music, both contemporary, and Authentic Irish throughout the week. Now a more in-depth review: Tir Na Nog is as Irish a bar as you'll ever see stateside, with great people on both the serving and patron's side of the bar top; Home to the best pint of Guinness on the East Coast. With a full bar up front, headed off by the staples on tap: Guinness, Smithwick's, and Magners, to the extensive supply of Irish Whiskey's behind the bar. You won't find a menu here at Tir Na Nog, but fret not as there are several eateries around the block to sneak off to in between Pints. A small sitting room takes you away from the bar and towards the live music stage, during our 6 day stay we saw 4 separate performances from traditional Irish music all the way to a hits of the 70's and 80's night with 0 disappointments. Behind the stage you'll find a darts lounge with a pair of steel tip boards and then the parking lot out back. A friend of mine and I were sent by the Army to NJ for a week and after a shaky experience at our Hotel Bar, I typed in our zip code and asked for the sake of all things Holy that Google may find me a Proper Pint. Tir Na Nog offered us that and more, in spades. I knew after reading some reviews and taking a look at their website that our time there would either be short lived, or we would never want to leave, and I'm not the least bit ashamed to say there were tears in my eyes as I boarded the plane to fly home. I won't get into the history of the place here, but I would suggest you take a look at the website: http://trentontirnanog.com/ and at least read up on it, because the place has a significant amount of history and makes significant contributions to the community around it on a yearly basis. From the first minute we stepped into the place until the last handshake and hug on our way out a week later, Tir Na Nog's staff and patrons made us feel as at home as we could being half the country away. As I said earlier, we were there 6 nights out of seven, from about dinner time until closing. In that time we experienced four of Tir Na Nog's bartenders, without a noticeable decline in service, or hospitality. The owner was at the bar every night and he didn't simply say a customary 'hello' to the regulars, but rather sat down with each of them (which rapidly included us as well) and had a drink and a conversation with them individually before moving on to the next person down the line. That's a true testament to someone who understands and appreciates his customers. (Just don't let him offer to do any painting for you... Trust me on that.) So if you find yourself in the Northeast and are looking for a properly poured Pint of Guinness, some superb Irish Whiskey, or just an authentic, community style feel for a night of drinks, just step into the Tir Na Nog and tell them Ryan from Iowa sent you, and enjoy yourself some Guinness and some good times with a group of strangers who made me feel like Family for those awesome 7 days in Trenton. Extremely narrow, impossible to get a seat when its crowded and bathrooms are gross. However, people are friendly & its fairly cheap.
