Cute little candy and kite shop. Parking is a little tricky, you have to park in the back and then walk around to the front to get into the shop. we were greeted right away by the owner. He was super friendly and got into chatting it up with us a little bit and some other customers in the store. A lot of garden decor here, a lot of fun knickknacks, kites for all different levels, candies, activity books outdoor and beach stuff. Super cute. Take a look and walk around. This is a small store with a small parking lot, but it was packed with lots of different items that were enjoyable & cute to browse--outdoor & garden decor, toys, candy, magnets, pet lover items, knickknacks, signs, decals, yard flags... We weren't greeted when we entered, but the staff was very friendly & helpful at checkout. We bought some fragile items that were carefully wrapped. The outside of this shop is quite charming, as a lot of different kinds of wind-powered displays are up all outside the store, as well as some cute flags. Once you head inside of the store, you'll see a lot of candy to your left, and also a lot of kites and other tourism memorabilia-like stickers. It was a perfect place for my husband and I to find a kite, get a sticker souvenir, and grab a snack ! The lady at the cashier was also nice and attached some kind of pin to the kite we purchased. Later, when we tried to fly the kite at a nearby beach, we were wondering why it would not fly well and began to worry about our purchase. However, we found out a missing part had slid out of the packaging at the beach and later spotted so if that is the case for your, please make sure to check everything in your kite package ! I was sad to see their 2nd location was gone, so my friend and I stopped at this one. Smaller, less selection and harder to park, but you take what you can get. The only loose candy to put into your own mix-bag is the salt-water taffy. I had been hoping for some of the other hard candies, but we were able to get some of those in a small pre-packaged bag at the front counter. The shop has a selection of cute and silly toys, kites, and some garden decorations. If you're in the area and want a sweet snack or a toy or just to feel like a kid in a candy shop, I'd recommend stopping by. read more

The man working there when I went was super nice. I came in with my boyfriend because we were visiting Bodega Bay and I wanted to try some taffy. They have a pretty good selection and he even lets you try some. I grabbed about 10 pieces and brought it to the counter because that's all I wanted. He said that the minimum on credit cards was $1 so I went back to grab more. I asked what he suggested and when I brought back the wrong one, he let me know. He didn't seem to mind that I kept switching which ones I wanted. On the side he was joking with my boyfriend about me being expensive which was really funny because I spent 10 minutes choosing $1 worth of taffy. Some other customers walked in and strikes conversations with him and it seemed like he has regulars who like to check on new items. They have kites, little toys, and a bunch of other things. I'd love to see how different this place looks like during a season with heavy foot traffic. Swing by, see what you think, worse case is that you walk away with $1 worth of taffy. Great little store the owners are incredibly nice and helpful. I bought a bunch of garden spinners/wind catchers from them, and the owner was very kind to ask if I had ever set them up before. I'm glad he asked because had he not explained it to me, it would have taken us much longer to set it up when we got home. The instructions on the bag are clear, but I'm a visual learner so when he pointed to the dots and where to get started it helped me with the instructions when we finally got home. The pieces are beautiful and I will definitely be back one day to get the bigger item I have my eyes set on!!! I've never been a taffy person, so when I saw the little gummy bears I decided to give them a try. Oh man, they were super delicious!! Juicy and just the right amount of soft and chewy. They sort of just bounce in your mouth. Incredibly flavorful so it wasn't just a mouthful of boring sugar like other generic store brands. You could taste the citrus and tartness of the combined flavors. Loved it!! My husband and I and our adult daughter and her husband stopped in yesterday while visiting bodega bay ! The service we received from the owner was exceptional- I feel like he went above and beyond for us even thou he didn't have what we were looking for . He was willing to let us order on line and have it shipped to our home which we respectfully declined ! After looking through his amazing gift shop I did find two adorable hot air balloons for my front yard - the items we purchased were reasonably priced and the service we received from the owner was top notched - I highly recommend this amazing establishment! read more

In fact and early childhood memory was coming here for a kite. This has a great location on your way through Bodega Bay. In fact, you can't miss the dozens and dozens of whirley gig spinners spinning about in the wind. It's a true spinners delight. You know the saying, "there is a little something for everyone". Well, there is a whole lotta something for everyone . If you think of it, they got it, if they dont have it, they can order it. I was hoping to get a shark spinner. What an amazing place. We shop here every time we are in the area. Most recently, we purchased two beautiful garden stakes (flowers). Unfortunately when we went to put them together some parts were missing. I called the store and Charlie was a huge help. We had him set the demos aside and we made a return trip for the exchange. Mediocre store with not very good saltwater taffy. Decent candy section with souvenirs that smelled of Old Lady in the 80s era decor. All of this easy to overlook if (IFF) the owner was even remotely charming. Instead he's super grouchy, surly, and rude he also has to mansplain to me some nonsense about some trinket he had for sale. Love being mansplained to. I don't love far from there and regularly travel to Bodega. I can guarantee he'll not see my business again. He was rude to me and my kids who are grown and super polite. Oh, and the candy is SUPER overpriced. Addendum: The owner's response below is a flat out lie. I was there with my girls, and was treated very poorly. He can make all the excuses he wants but the fact remains - candy is over priced and not very good. Souvenirs are outdated and tacky (totally my own opinion - you may love them!) but mostly, we were treated like DIRT rather than valued costumers. This is a tiny coastal store that caters to people passing by, offering a variety of kites and kite accessories. Of course the candies... I have been coming here since 2002 when I discovered it going up the coast rebuilding a boutique 100 year old hotel. I have always flown kites, many kites made of batik cloth & wood from India, custom cloth kites and the new material kites. There were times where I would go in and have the store to myself at midday during the week and have the luxury of looking and deciding what next to add to my large kite inventory. And there were other times when I finally decided and saved for a 6ft. delta and 100 pound braided nylon string that has lasted since then; I'd rush to the store and it would be jam packed with nice innocent visitors from the cities in the bay area or people noticing the banner flags and the words Candy & Kites to come in and see what it was about to casual tourists going up the coast in the summer, to gawkers who don't seem to be kite fliers and are afflicted with a loss of young at heart or not realizing C&K is just a country kite shop on the coast trying to do business in seasonal weather. The owners get hammered by all kinds of folk in peak seasons. My girlfriend and I would go to the tiny market/ deli across the street and park across from C&K as we would picnic on deli sandwiches & drinks from the back of our Land Rover and just watch humanity fill up the store in waves of smiles, children, hipsters, newbies to the coast, city folk playing bumper cars in the graveled tiny park lot they have. All the while cars are Zooming up or down the narrow coastal highway in front of the Kite store. There used to be an older woman who used to work there, I suppose she was the owner before another man appeared in the past 10 years. The young man told that he was the son (if I'm not too old to remember) and was taking on managing the store because to give the cashier lady (his mother?) a chance to take it easy or retire(?) I may be wrong but in my mind and memory that is what I recall. It is challenging having a huge demographic of people come into your tiny store to buy small amounts of candy & and an economic kite for Dylan Beach, it is brutal to answer the same questions to different people for 8-9 hours and still smile from the heart. The service industry is just brutal on tender people who own a kite store on the the driven path. Despite that .... The Candy & Kites person who called someone a "dirty hippy" is just uncalled for... I'm positive there are two sides to a perspective or something that happened. Terseness I have witnessed to employees & customers due to busy pressure, and the 2 women employees when I was there took the owners' misplaced tone in stride. Those employees were angels. And customers can be enthralled at the candy and eager to fly a diamond attached to a string. I find it just fascinating how stupid people are with their "precognitions" of how to fly" a piece of beautiful colored paper or new durable material I go to this place (C&K) out of Peace, Penance to honor someone I lost because we frequented this place. And yes we were looked at with funny stares because were are a mixed race family. She was a striking french fiance, and our daughter has one brown eye and one blue eye with curly auburn hair (she loves kites still), I am a taller than average asian career LE (law enforcement detective) And we live in America and we are accustomed to not being readily accepted until we spend intelligently, or we absorb the stares and whispers from business owners of our choice of a 7'ft black delta with an added purchase of a 40'ft. tail in addition to the corresponding high end braided nylon(?) 100-150lbs. weight line to fly that Big Beautiful Delta... But I digress from my point about the dirty hippy call and the fantastic selection of kites and high end practical accessories; of which some are commercially appealing to the newbie to flying and most are appealing to the intermediate to life long ProFlier of high end kites from tiny tiny to bigger and bigger. I would love hear from C&K why a representative called someone a Dirty Hippy, unless that review was a fake. Sonoma & Humboldt counties are full of freelancers making their own livings via whatever they are excel at whether pottery and glazes, artworks of painting or welding, clothing fabrication sewing in multi textiles of cotton muslin or leatherwork. In these past 6 years farming cannabis is a solid lifestyle of kite fliers and freelancers & Bohemians (hippies) in Sonoma and Humboldt counties. Again I digress from the truer review. That is to say Candy & Kites was there when I first discovered it 30 years ago with my father, I rediscovered it 20 years ago and am amazed that very little has changed. I can only encourage would be kite fliers not think in terms of dollars and cents or what their expectations of what a Taffy should be. The place is a coastal country kite-candy store. read more

They have a great little system during the pandemic.... they limit the amount of customers into the store, must wear masks, and you are given gloves & a bag if you want to purchase taffy. Fun! However, there was just one tiny obstacle....my dentist, who is also my bff, was with me on our visit to Candy & Kites...yikes! I adore this little store from top to bottom...just the kind of appeal that entices me to buy the beautiful kites they displayed all over the store You've got the kites for leisure use & those to use on competitions...all were bright, bold colors in different sizes & shapes And there were creative ones too...those shaped like dragons, princesses, action heroes, etc The staff (or owners) of Candy & Kites were extremely knowledgable & helpful with choosing what types of kites to fly back home for cityfolk like me Oh and you just can't get past the barrels of taffy as you enter the store. There isn't really a main street besides Hwy 1 in Bodega Bay. So, this is one of many candy and kite shops along the road to town. We were on our way from Occidental last President's Day weekend and stopped in here with some friends because no trip down this part of the coast is complete without salt water taffy. So I loaded a bag full of all their flavors and even managed to convince my husband that a swirly tie-dyed kite was the one for us. But, once we were in the car, and after all the hype I talked about salt water taffy being the greatest candy in the world, our friends and I discovered the true horror of chemically wasted candy. Now, I'm not an organic junkie or authenticity freak by any stroke but seriously, when "blue raspberry" tastes more like genetically modified electric kool-aid you know you've been had! As for the kite, it was too windy to test it and it sits, unopened in our trunk waiting for another perfect coastal day to try it out. Unlike our sweets made in a test tube, I think the kite will fly high. Went to Bodega Bay for the first time and it's a cute little town. While driving, all the kites and windmills of this store caught my eye and I had to go in. I'm not a yard art type of person but bought a cute little "pug" dog windmill for my house. Lots of selections in windmills and salt water taffy. Something about being next to a body of water that makes you crave salt water taffy. Overall the taffy was very soft which made it difficult to eat, did not appreciate that so much. I was THAT kid in the candy store until I read that their taffy was imported from Portland, Oregon. Then that happy kid turned into a sour apple. I wanted local, homemade candy not something imported from another state. Nothing against Portland but I am a strong supporter of local business using local products. Its a chance for locals to highlight and rave about their area, their skill, their passion. Also the woman at the register did no raving, in fact she kept her interactions with us at a minimal while the other guest received a more welcoming response. Thanks to Candy & Kites, I have been eating salt water taffy at my desk all day. It's fresh, soft, and tasty. Root beer & peppermint FTW! I also appreciated the potentially alarming flavors (have not yet brought myself to try the carrot cake). I love bringing back random candy when I go away for a few days, so I got six pieces of each flavor they had, which came up to 2 pounds at $6.50/lb. Second time I've been to this store on the way to the ocean for a day trip. The store has a fairly wide selection of kites, windmill art, and saltwater taffy, and a few other children's toys. That being said- the owner is sort of a condescending jerk. Before we even had a chance to browse the store, the owner decided it would be fun to mouth off and insult my friend based on his looks, "what do we have here?" calling him a "damn hippy". It wasn't funny. Any business I may have had in mind for them that day was over. That was for sure. And I won't be back. For the record, I'd rather be a hippy than a rude pretentious candy shop owner.... Any day of the week. This is California. If you don't know where this place is, you won't miss it. It's the white stucco building surrounded by loads of whirly gigs, flags and other assorted lawn decorations located on the left side of Highway 1 as you north head towards Bay Flat Road and Spud Point Marina. You won't miss it...I guarantee it. Great selection...not only flags and but saltwater taffy too. Haven't ate that stuff in years and years, but people were buying it up by the bagful when we stopped by. Small toy and kites for the kids are also available.
