The men in the store were very nice and parking was easy to find because we went during the week. Sadly, almost all of the taffy we purchased was stuck to the wrapper making it impossible to eat. lol, i wish i can give this place zero stars. been coming here for awhile and this past weekend i will never be coming back. the employee could at least be kind about the no dog rule. i had my dog with me, i understand it's a candy store, but the way the employee approached me and was extremely rude to kick me out was absolutely uncalled for. would have not been a problem a simple "hey just to let you know dogs aren't allowed in the store" would have been completely okay. the way this gentlemen approached me and kept telling me no dogs you need to get out and kept getting in my face pushing me out is disgusting. i hope you get fired. read more

I am such a sucker for candy stores and often let down by the lack of variety at other locations. My boyfriend took me down to Laguna for a day out, and we wandered into Candy Baron. Needless to say I felt like I was 5 again, eyes wide with excitement looking at all the pretty colors and candies to pick from. Huge selection of salt water taffy, booze infused, nostalgic 90s candies etc etc... I was the most excited about the sugar free section since I try to give myself some treats without as much guilt. Grabbed some sugar free taffy, red vines, and thin mints. They were very fair priced given for the location and was excited to see some of my favorites available! I would certainly recommend if you're in the area to go and grab a few pieces or even just to drop in to look around. read more

Sadly, I'll never go back. On a recent day trip to Laguna Beach, I brought a friend with me and I went on and on about how awesome the Candy Baron is. I told him that there are candies from all over the world, past and present. We got to the store, picked up baskets to shop and started filling up with chocolate bars, salt water taffy, gummies and lots of other things. My friend wanted to know if they had any German candies. He politely asked the cashier, the only person working there, and she blatantly ignored him. She's been there forever, so I'm thinking she's the owner. Little Asian woman. So my friend politely asked he again thinking she didn't hear him. She yelled at him "I'm busy!!" I was so surprised she yelled at him. So the man she was helping asked her "do you have any German candies?" So yelled at him "I heard him and I am busy!" We put down our baskets of overpriced candies and walked out. Shame on that woman. I will never go back and I deplore everyone else to do the same. I'm all about small privately owned small businesses, but shop elsewhere besides this disgusting tourist trap. read more

Having not read the opinions of other reviewers (in an effort not to influence my own review), I'm surprised the rating of the Candy Baron is as low as it is. I didn't encounter any real issues with the place, and in fact it struck me as an establishment that is as good as other candy stores I've been to. They have a nice varied selection, with numerous barrels full of saltwater taffy in a wide array of flavor combinations. Moving farther back into the store you can find chocolate covered treats, foreign chocolate bars and candy, and the traditional chocolate and flavored candy Americans have come to know and love. The prices here are fair, and even in the middle of a Saturday afternoon the service was quick and friendly. My only real complaint: Many of the options don't have prices attached to them, so how much you're gonna pay for a given chocolate or candy is unknowable until you check out. That's not only odd, but inconvenient, especially if you are deciding among many items. If I happen to be passing through, I wouldn't be opposed to stopping by again :) read more

C-A-N-D-Y just as sweet as it should be! When my bf and I walked inside, we felt like little kiddies as we were just amazed by the amazing selections of candy they have here. There's some candies here that gave us a blast from the past. Remember the zebra gum? They also have Ringpop, Warheads, etc! Candy paradise. I love walking around in here. It's a tiny shop but it's stocked full of candy. You'll find every day favorites, old classics, and rare candies you've probably never heard of. The candy is piled high in bins all over and in rows along the back. I like to come here and try candy that might be unique and then take a stroll down beautiful Laguna with all my stash. What an inviting candy store. Yes it beckoned me to enter with all the wonderful looking flavors of taffy. The store had a very organized layout which made candy shopping easy. They carry all kinds of unique flavors of taffy to the old fashioned vintage candies. Also lots of little gifts for the kiddos. What bothered me was the lack of pricing on the candy. Also the main reason for the 3 stars was the taffy. The beautiful assortment of taffy was so fresh but Lacked any distinct flavor except for some of the orange pieces. With all the cool sounding flavors I really expected some yummy tasting taffy. Unfortunately all the taffy tasted the same pretty much. I seriously couldn't tell a difference between a bacon or banana taffy etc....you get the point. It's like whoever made the taffy used the different food colorings and made the swirls but lacked adding enough flavors to the taffy. Big Disappointment! My flavorless taffy came to around $20 :((. I read the reviews on Yelp and I checked out this place. There's a good amount of candy in this shop. I agree with Florance's review in that the individually wrapped bags of candy are a good thing. I liked the collectible tins of mints they carried, everything from colorful Obama tins to tins from Jim Benton's bunny line. What I liked out of what I bought that I've tried: Sour Patch Kids Cherry flavored gummies and strawberry-banana striped sour gummy tape. The licorice chews were all right. Now, the licorice swirls were really good. If you like candy, it's worth a look. read more

If you are looking for a sweet treat, candy Baron is the place to go. They have a wide variety of candies and taffy which are all very good, they even have special soda and beverages. Their candy is impressive but be sure to bring a full wallet as the candies can get a little pricey but not too expensive either, many candies range from 2-10 dollars but overall I greatly recommend the Candy Baron. read more

It's basically Willy Wonka candy factory on steroids. Your kid will want one of everything, but be prepared to get a second mortgage because it's $6.30 for a HALF A POUND. We arrived close to closing time at 8:49pm and a woman told us they were closed, ushered us out, and locked the door in our faces. The candy selection was humongous. My husband loved that there were some from Switzerland - his motherland. However, the dark chocolate Rocky Road bar had a best by date of July 2017!!!! Accccck. Sweet!! Literally, sweet. Whether you can afford an hour's pay for a candy or not, come in and navigate what seems to be an episode of TLC's Hoarders, except this has colorful bins of candy instead of newspapers and old Tupperware full of rat droppings. With everything from the newest to the oldest, any generation will find something they like. Kids will like the giant sour gummy bears and bacon band-aids. People like me will like seeing our old faves (Lik-A-Stik, Chick-o-Stick... what no Astro Pops?) and pop culture stuff like Hello Kitty in KISS makeup. I was there this morning July 20, 2021. There was no hand sanitizer at the door. What happen to cleaning your hands before grabbing a basket for your booty. I received no proper greeting. The lady had her cell phone in one hand and touching the candies with the other. That's another issue. I don't care what anyone says, cell phones are nasty little germ carriers. I was there for the good taffy. Sometimes you just have to overlook unwelcoming behavior and be the one that's courteous and smile . Smiles and courtesy hopefully are still contagious. Shopping at the Candy Baron is more for the experience than the candy, I think. It's fun to wander the rows, look at obscure or sentimental candies, however the candy tends to be pricey and some of it looks very old. My boyfriend and I enjoy stopping in for a treat after a date night in Laguna. We just try to have some self control so we don't end up with $15 of candy (it's happened more than I'd like to admit). read more

Re: I don't like Taffy, and yes the entire right side of the store is filled with various taffy flavors and so no, this review will not be about the taffy. The GUMMY CANDY ON THE OTHER HAND, my friends, is the real treasure of this store. I bought sour rings and the fried egg gummies and they were soft. They were so soft they were practically like chewy marshmellows. They were so delicious and fresh-tasting, not stale and hard, like a regular bag of them in the grocery store. What I honestly appreciate is that they put the list of ingredients on the candies, and in case there is something other than corn syrup, sugar and food colouring (look, our favourite Haribo gold-bears are made with these and I was not here to buy apples). They have also really good black licorice in my opinion, and I barely eat licorice. It's soft and chewy, not hard and plastic-y. In addition they have spicy ginger candy, and other little spiced candies in the front, and a loooot of pez and fun candies in the back, including the little chocolate liqueur bottles that my friend really liked. All in all I'd come back. Lady was not rude up in the front, although she seemed kind of stoic for being a cashier in a giant rainbow coloured candy store. One star docked for not having prices on the candies nor a scale. You don't know what is priced by weight and what is individually priced. The only signs are ones that tell you to take a basket, which I think is just setting you up to spend a lot more money than you think. Two Words...........Pecan Roll So our Laguna Beach day trip was quickly coming to a close. We were tired, a little sun burnt, and most of all full. We had already had cup cakes from Laguna Beach House, Dinner from Nick's, and gelato from Tutto Amore Gelato. We were trying to walk off all the food we had just consumed when we came across Candy Baron. Once we walked in we were surrounded by barrels and barrels of candy. Taffy, bubble gum, gummy bears, jelly belly's, candy bars, chocolate covered pretzels, and imported chocolates are just to name a few of the items that cover every square inch of this shop. Just looking at all that candy was giving me a stomach ache. As I looked over the prices I noticed that this place was a little expensive but most candy shops are a bit pricey. When we were about to leave I glanced to the left of the cash register and I caught a glimpse of something that kind of looked like a piece of dog feces. At first I looked at my GF and said "look at the nasty looking thing" but upon closer inspection I saw the words Pecan Roll written in green letters across the plastic package. I'm a sucker for anything that is made with pecans. Even though I was stuffed and that I new I had probably gained 10 pounds from all the food I had already eaten that day I could not leave this shop with out one of these two dollar pecan rolls. My intentions were to take it home and eat it the next day but on our drive home there was an accident on the 5 freeway (it figures) and we were stuck sitting in traffic. As we were sitting there I remembered the pecan roll and decided that I might as well eat it now. Oh my goodness, I loved that dog feces looking candy. The roll was made up of a piece of soft white chocolate fudge that was rolled in crushed pecans. The fudge tasted so fresh, like if it was home made. I don't think any other candy bar will ever be as good as this one was. Next time I'm in Laguna I'm going to buy at least five of these nasty looking, amazing tasting rolls. read more

It's a place where debauchery meets innocence. Where indulgence meets reticence. At this twain of childhood and adulthood, a candy bag was filled, but more importantly, a childhood dream was realized while in a quite adult inebriated state. Thank you Candy Baron. I was playing in a cover band in front of a pub when The Candy Baron hence forth to be known as TCB bought me a scotch. Well, US a scotch. The whole band. I guess he liked us. Of course I had no idea that he was TCB at the time. We played and were the "Sex Pistols" of the mellow Laguna Beach Fete De La Musique. Although, we were told to turn down, we rebelled and ended up the bell of the ball. And when I went to fetch my drink TCB voiced his appreciation and said hoped we were being compensated well. I told him that I paid my gas, my parking, and that I was just happy to play my drums on the sidewalk with a great group of people by the beach to people who appreciated it. It was then that the mysterious Candy Baron revealed himself. In his British accent TCB told our band to come by his candy shop. That the girl would "cut us a deal." After the gig and after much beer and wandering, our band ended up stumbling into TCB's magical wonderland. TCB was there and noticed us right away. I wasn't quite sure if this journey was gratis or not so I left the Kiss Pez Dispenser Set (All 4 original members) on the shelf. EIther way, I didn't want to be greedy or broke. What am I doing playing Rock N Roll? Nevermind that, scratch that, reverse it, I digress. I think TCB is actually Malcolm Mclaren's unknown twin brother or sumfin becuzz e remiynz me uvva frustrated rock n rowl manaja, e do, e do. E'd ate me if e red dis I'm sure. But I fink e's a teddy bear of a guy. E'rs why. (dropping 'orrible British dialect here) When one by one we got up to the counter, the Oompa Loompa would deftly transfer the contents of our individual baskets into it's own large clear plastic bag and with sparkling eyes he told us each to have a wonderful day. This man treated us to a day on the town. Even better, he told me I was up there with some of the best drummers he's ever seen or heard. Well he was drinking a bit at the bar because I know better but it made me feel great and also made me realize the power of giving. Candy makes the world go 'round. I'll admit that I'm not particularly mature and I never walk pass a candy store without stopping by. This one wasn't particularly gimmicky, lacking shiny crinkly bags and chutes of brightly-colored candy. However, they did have barrels and plenty of nostalgic and funky candy to choose from, including horehound (remember Little House on the Prairie?), violet mint (bleh) and tons of saltwater taffy (though not made on site). I'm happy that this place seems more sanitary than the Sweet Factory because everything without a wrapper is packaged into tiny baggies so you don't fish it out yourself with tongs. That means my gummy bears haven't been sneezed on, touched or sampled. Phew! They also list ingredients for much of their candy so you can avoid allergens. Don't forget to grab your wooden pail so your chocolates don't melt in your hand. I'm not sure if it was pricey or not compared to other self-serve candy stores. I got a fair amount of heavy taffy and sour tape for $5 so I'm guessing it's on par or even cheaper than Sweet Factory. Some of the larger items, like the gi-normous Jaw Breakers, are priced individually rather than by weight. Their rock candy is without the stick, so in theory, you eat everything you paid for. P.S. Andy loves Candy! One of the coolest candy shops I've ever been in. They have all kinds of candy. The novelty stuff, foreign candy, insects, salt water taffy, the usual stuff and more. When I got home to eat it I thought it was funny that there was a Barons candy sticker on the the bottom of the container conveniently covering the best by date. I love this place. I love candy. I love college. Anyway, Candy Baron has every kind of candy you can imagine. I could spend hours pouring over their gummy section alone. The first time I tried their chocolate-covered gummy bears, it changed my life. Then, I ate, like, three bags, and now I'm taking a break from chocolate-covered gummy bears. I am always sure to stock up on hard-to-find candies, like cow tales and more obscure gummies, like gummy seafood and gummy cherries. They carry pretty much everything you could ever want in candy-form. Candy Baron also has an impressive collection of mints in cool mint tins. I recently picked up some sour cherry mints in a Pac Man ghost-shaped mint tin, as well as some frosting-flavored mints (because... frosting-flavored mints, man!) in a cupcake-shaped tin. And they have political mint tins -- perfect for election years and embarrassing your relatives at family dinners. Other collections of note include candy cigarettes (and lots of 'em), which is rare to see these days. Up at the counter, they have those chocolate liquor bottles filled with real liquor, so you can be a total candy delinquent. They also have cool toys and collectibles! I've bought two lunchboxes at Candy Baron. I could go on and on about this cool candy store. If only it weren't so crowded, it would be perfect! read more
