It's been a while since I visited, but this place is fun for specialty chocolates. I wish that the prices were more well displayed, but the packaging is beautiful and so are their creations. I enjoy most of their chocolates, but they definitely have some unique flavors. At times, the staff can be short and don't feel exactly welcoming. Schmid's has some of the best candy in the area, even as far away as San Diego. It is located on an adorable street where walking the area is super fun. Schmid's using all Covid protocol and you can almost see their smile under their mask. They also wear gloves. The service is fast and super friendly. The employees know all their candy and can tell you about it. Personally, I love all the candy filled with creamy sugar. You can however get sugar free candy and they have a huge selection of it. This is a GREAT Candy Store. We come to San Clemente a couple of times a year for a little respite from the hustle of corporate and Los Angeles. This is the first time we have stopped our walk at Schmid's. We always walk from our hotel to South of Nick's and then back we stopped for some chocolate dessert. My plus-one is a chocolate fan and I am too - but I'm limited to sugar-free. The wife selected hers, and I was amazed to see the large assortment of sugar-free delights. All of the products are freshly made and beautifully hand crafted. The presentation is exquisite. The woman helping us was very friendly and accommodating. We had a very pleasant conversation and really enjoyed the short time we spent in the store. We took our goodies back to the porch, stared at the waves and munched on a couple pieces of AWESOME candy. I don't know what else to say. In my opinion, this is by far the best sugar-free chocolate I have ever had. My wife agrees that it is one of the best she had had as well, and she is a chocoholic. This ain't your chain store chocolate people. It doesn't get any better than this! Sunday walks at the market and Schmids chocolate go hand in hand (sometimes almost literally. I mean chocolate doesn't have hands, but it does go in your hands, and if it did have a hand I would be holding it). The owner is the real deal and has been making chocolate for many years (European style), while still looking perpetually youthful. We have bought an assortment of chocolates from her multiple times. My kids would give their favorite sibling for one more chocolate strawberry. You wouldn't even have to push them that hard. My personal favorite are the salted caramel chocolates, which seem to be in vogue right now, but I love them shamelessly. The rest of the chocolates are just as good. My only complaint is that they aren't open 24/7 to feed all my weak moments. read more

Stumbled upon this small chocolate shop on Avenida del Mar after my friend and I were walking off a boozy brunch from South of Nick's. A cute little shop, I was drawn to the homemade chocolates made here not only because of the beautiful artisan quality but also the gift appeal of the boxes of chocolates for sale. Let's be frank, anything chocolate is good in my opinion, so perhaps I am a bit biased, but being greeted warmly, by I believe was the store owner bearing free samples, is going to be a plus to start off with. I purchased several different chocolates for myself and to give as gifts. I really enjoyed the ones I had, especially the Strawberry Balsamic which was very unusual but absolutely delicious. I am a big peanut butter and chocolate fan and enjoyed the Chocolate-covered Nutter Butters immensely, also ;) My friends who I gifted the Chocolate-covered Oreos and Chocolate Surfboards to said they were delicious, also. The Purple Chili Gem chocolate was absolutely stunning. It was almost too pretty to eat, a unique combo of sweet and spicy. The woman who helped us couldn't have been nicer. She told us she was dipping chocolate-covered fruit all day and was glad that the Christmas holidays were over as it was a very busy time for them. She offered up samples and was eager to explain about the different varieties available. I was not thinking about chocolate, craving it or searching but I attended the First Saturday Village Art Fair and ended up in front of Schmid's by sheer coincidence. Talk about SERENDIPITY! I have only recently become a chocoholic and am typically uncertain as to where is the best place for my next indulgence. I entered cautiously thinking it might just be a front for a conventional sweet treat shop but nothing further from the truth. This place reminded me of Ostend, Belgium where many years ago I purchased one kilo of chocolate and promptly ate the entire box while driving through Europe. A rare moment of uncontrolled joy and figured it could be one of my last. But not to be, the scent of dark chocolate, caramels, coconut, almonds, etc. is overwhelming and the selection even more so. Henriette helped me focus on a purchase and was most patient with my palate and budget. I was in town for a training class and had a little extra time for lunch. I was craving something sweet and popped in. Great selection, great service. I bought three chocolate bars ( that were on the small side) and took them to the counter. My intention was to eat one then and take the other 2 to my kids. The cashier rang them up and said it was $13. I was shocked at the amount and reminded myself it was a tourist location. I ate one bar and was impressed. The chocolate is rich and tastes amazing. I still think the almond chocolate bar at $5 is too expensive... and I've been home for 4 hours and have yet to give the other 2 to my kids... and am thinking of eating them myself at a later date... since I don't think they would appreciate the quality like I do. read more
