I was in Columbia for a family wedding and was excited to see, my welcome bag had favorites of the bride and groom. I had a packet of Chocolate Covered Pretzels and another packet containing a Chocolate Covered Oreo. Typically I was a glass of cold milk with my Oreo, but this one from the Candy Factory was perfect just being dipped in chocolate. The pretzels gave me a nice mix of savory and sweet. The two pack had one dipped in Milk Chocolate and another in, White Chocolate. I surprised myself, by liking the White Chocolate best. It seemed to have a sweeter taste, which went well with the salty pretzel. While out exploring downtown Columbia, I stopped by to give their Chocolate Covered Strawberries a tasting. OMG - so good. The chocolate shell had a good crunch and the berry was super juicy. I feel bad that I did not, take a picture of the deliciousness. A gem of a local business! The Candy Factory is a Columbia institution which features a large assortment of locally made chocolate and other candies. We've been shopping here for years for ourselves and for gift giving and have never been disappointed. For the quality, the prices are not too bad either, you have the option to either buy individual items or order by the pound (around $20 a pound last I checked). I did not go into the Candy Factory myself, but my boyfriend did to get a small order of mixed chocolate covered strawberries. I've always heard great things about the candy factory, especially their chocolate covered strawberries, but was left disappointed. I'm a big fan of supporting locally owned/ small businesses, especially downtown, but the quality left me wanting more. The strawberries were soft and personally tasted like they were on their way to going bad. In all fairness, they do have a pink note on the inside of the box that once enrobed in chocolate they have a carbonated quality. They were extremely carbonated and it was akin to sparkling water. I had bought a pack at Hyvee earlier this week that said they were from the candy factory and those strawberries were not carbonated and their chocolate tasted better. Being curious, I searched up why the strawberries might be carbonated and it said online that it's due to them not being properly stored or the strawberries being overripe. My boyfriend noted that the cashier was really helpful and kind, so this is in no way a reflection of their employees perhaps just their strawberry making procedures. To improve I highly recommend considering different storing methods, being selective of the quality of fruit they use, and having employees let customers know upfront that the strawberries may have a carbonated or fizzy quality to avoid this. read more

Okay, I am generally a pretty healthy eater and don't ever buy pre-packaged snacks, but let me tell you a secret--I love Nutter Butters sandwich cookies. Well this old-timey candy store has chocolate-covered Nutter Butters and Oreos for 75 cents each. That is a 5-star there, even if they operated out of a little shack on the road. I don't know about the other stuff in the store. It seemed like it carried a little too much of this and that just to fill such a big space. But who cares? Do NOT recommend. Customers were not greeted upon entry, staff were not available to assist, long wait to checkout because there were NO staff in the FRONT at the registers. No restrooms were available for customers. Do NOT RECOMMEND. NOT worth the poor and lackluster customer service. This review was made BEFORE the snowstorm and/or any other inclement weather. Several employees were in the back NOT assisting customers in the store. Based on SEVERAL other reviews customer service needs to be improved as this appears to be an ongoingi issue. Huge selection of chocolates, gifts, and non-chocolates, too. The staff are all very attentive, helpful and friendly. Their chocolate creations are quite unique, from Mizzou fan chocolates to kids favorites like chocolate shaped castles on a stick, or a chocolate car. And the decorative truffles are so artful. Cute place! My exact words after taking 2 steps in! They have adorable gifts displayed around the shop (picture frames, signs, crafty things, magnets, cups, etc) and lot and lots of candy! You name it and they have it! Little stations of candy displayed all of make it a great place to search out your favorite sweets. They have a big display case where you can buy goodies by the pound or piece if you can contain yourself! Off the main shopping area of downtown so they are a bit hidden but worth the extra effort to find it! read more

Candy Factory has a lot going for it. Not only do they have delicious sweets in all shapes and sizes, they also have a decent selection of gifts and decor that surprised me the first time I went into the shop. As a chocolate/sweets lover, I could spend my entire paycheck here. The truffles and Tiger toffee are a few of my favorites, as well as the many chocolate-covered items they offer. If you don't like chocolate, they have a good selection of non-chocolate sweets as well. The staff have always been very friendly and willing to help you pick out just what you're craving. They have several gift box options that make great gifts, or just a special treat for you. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you get, too. They have lots of cute, seasonal home decor and even some serving dishes and glasses. They also have candles, food/drink mixes (like dips or ciders), adorable baby clothes, and more. Cute little gift shop with a candy store inside. I was very impressed to find that they actually make their own chocolates on the second floor of their business. I've learned lots of candy places want you to think they make their own chocolates, but not all of them do. We bought several different items and everyone loved their choices! We were traveling from Philadelphia and saw the Candy Factory online so, we wanted to use it as a stop to stretch and look around. Someone said that they had tours to see how the chocolate was made. Unfortunately, there was no information on the tours anywhere and we found out that they don't have tours on weekends when we got there on Saturday...They did let us go up to look to see where it was made and the girls working at the time were very nice. While, that was disappointing, the shop itself was as good as all the other reviews are talking about. If we weren't traveling I'm sure we would have been taking things with us. I love Columbia's only local candy shop, the Candy Factory! It's right downtown, so you can pop in anytime you need a chocolate fix. They have cute gifts, toys and candy in the main area, but if you know what's good, go straight to the counter. That's where you'll find all of the fresh and amazing candies. The Katies (chocolate, caramel and either pecan or cashews) are fabulous, as are the heavenly hash, salted chocolate-covered caramels and selection of truffles including one made with a local winery Les Bourgeois's wine. Yum! They also have really good chocolate covered fruit - bananas in the summer and raspberries and even grapes in season (Sounds weird, but they're yummy!) in addition to the famous strawberries which have a unique fizz.
