My nephew bought three pies from Peggy Jean's, for his daughter's 32nd birthday. They all live in Columbia, Missouri. My wife and I were visiting for Christmas. The birthday celebrant has her party as the last event of our trip. I love little businesses such as this. I asked, because I am always curious whether establishments such as this are named for actual human beings or if it is a fiction for marketing purposes. Peggy and Jeanne were two people. They were friends who baked. Peggy passed away. Jeanne closed the shop. Then the daughter of Jeanne wanted to leave her corporate job. They reopened the business. It has thrived. They have two locations. We purchased three sweet pies. They were fresh. As the one woman behind the counter said, Christmas cleaned them out. We were there just in time for a fresh batch coming out of the oven, though the selection was limited. We purchased blackberry, peach, and Dutch apple with a crumble top rather than the lattice crust. My nephew said they order savory pies as well. WOWZA! Was heading to Jazz for dinner.... and stopped her to get a pie. They carry savory, cream and fruit pies... I got a peach pecan and a lemon raspberry and these both were AMAZING! I'm kind of pie snobby, so I wasn't expecting these to be so good. I'm a crusty gal :p If your crust isn't good, PLEASE make it thin.... BUT... their crust is sooo good and buttery! AND THIN! it's just delicious perfect! And the pie itself isn't overly sweet like commercial pies, and the pies I've gotten in the local Mennonite stores. I was sadly disappointed in the cherry pie I got today. I had heard great things about Peggy Jean's so my expectations were high, but there wasn't much flavor in the pie. For a 9" pie, there wasn't a lot of filling. For $22, it was a disappointment and was more like an $8 pie. However, the ladies working were very friendly. Received A sugar free, Chocolate chip, mint pie, produced and sold by Peggy Jean's pies, for Christmas. Two of us being diabetics, ate a slice each with dinner on the 24th. The aftertaste grew to the point that it tasted like we had eaten Acquavelea after shave. This was followed by late-night acid reflux for both of us. Next, about 6pm on the 25th we were glued to the bathroom for an hour or more. Only two of us has this pie and only the two of us had the same reaction. I don't eat pie very often, but if every pie was like a Peggy Jeans pie, I would. I ordered a regular cherry pie to celebrate National Pi Day, and everything about it was wonderful. It was fresh out of the oven, so naturally I had a piece as soon as I got home. The perfect level of flakiness in the crust, coupled with the gooey cherry filling (with real cherries), made my heart happy. I could tell it was made from scratch by looking at it, but tasting it was another thing altogether. You pay for the quality you get, and the cherry was $15 (after a special Pi Day discount). They do offer smaller pies and jar pies (exactly what they sound like), which are less expensive. I'm excited to go back and try some of the speciality pies, which sound intriguing. Because it was later in the day on Pi Day, my options were limited when I visited. That said, if you have a specific pie you want, I'd recommend ordering ahead. One final note, the staff at Peggy Jeans were all extremely friendly. Even though it was a very busy day for them, they all had smiles and were polite and patient. I will definitely be returning to Peggy Jeans to get my pie on again soon. read more

I was just in Columbia for the day and Peggy Jean's Pies came highly my recommended by an MU student I chatted with. They weren't wrong! I was there early in the day and was able to take advantage of "day old" pricing on several 5" pies. Blueberry, Mixed Berry, Pecan, and Chocolate Bourbon Pecan. The fruit pies were delicious and filled with fruit but the Choco Pecan Bourbon was where it's at. Rich, flavorful, and full of pecans was def the winner of the trip! read more

I stopped by to try Peggy Jeans Pies on Tuesday, two days before Thanksgiving and was greeted by a gentleman who informed me that they only had products for sale for those who had preordered pies. Effectively, the shop was closed to drop in customers. Their website did not have any indication that they were open only for preorders, so I made a trip to their shop for nothing. I absolutely understand the crush of business for bakeries around the holidays and am pleased to see a small business doing such brisk business, but was disappointed at the poor job that they did to communicate that they would have nothing available to purchase to a customer that had not preordered a product days before the holiday. I have patronized bakeries in a number of markets around the country and have never experienced a situation like this. read more

I tried a blackberry pie today and won't be going back. I think the pie tasted old and both the crust and filling were tasteless.

This place has an amazing variety of pies and prices are reasonable. We bought a 5" blackberry pie today, and while the filling was delicious, the crust was disappointing. It was almost like a bread consistency, not flaky/crisp. But then I saw on the box that the pie's expiration date was the very next day. Maybe that explains the crust. I will try Peggy Jean's Pies again, but I'll be sure to check that the pie is not expiring soon. read more

It's a pie place. An entire place, specializing in PIE. That alone should sell you on checking Peggy Jeans out. The pies are wonderful, the staff are the BEST- funny, cheery, and as sweet as the pies they grace us with. None of the flavors will disappoint, but my faves are the German Chocolate (the filling is like fudge and pudding had a rebellious baby) and the Peach - which had a sugary crust I could have licked like a lollipop.
