I was so happy to finally have a chance to eat at Cane! I have been looking at their food for months now. It was date night and I chose came because we both like West Indian food. We ordered doubles, jerk wings, crispy kale, omnivore paratha tiffin box with curry chicken along with red stripe and their hibiscus drinks. I really wanted to try the oxtail but since we were headed out afterwards, knew I wouldn't finish and wouldn't have anywhere to stash the leftovers. The doubles and jerk wings had the most flavor and I was a little disappointed and couldn't believe they gave us leg quarters for the curry chicken. What a disgrace lol. The curry also lacked depth of flavor. I was really looking forward to having food that was better than what my stepfather, a Trini himself makes. They had a consistency of the curry sauce correct whereas my stepfather's is more grainy however his has different flavor notes that gives it depth compared to canes which was really flat. I can understand them catering to a certain demographic but you got to stay true to the culture. Where is my spice lol? We stopped by Cane, a restaurant that serves up Caribbean street food, while we were in the area. We started off with Doubles, which was an Indian fried bread that was filled with cumin-spiced channa. Honestly, we weren't fans of this, as the fried bread was super soggy, and the chickpeas were just not tasty. Some of the chickpeas seemed to have been undercooked, as they were hard. For the main, I had the Oxtails, which were grilled and marinated, and served with coconut lime rice. Unfortunately, while the flavors were good, this came out cold - not sure if it was just sitting around and forgotten? I opted to get all 3 of the sauces, which included chutneys (tamarind and mango), Chow (pineapple), and Sauces ("cane juice"), in addition to a side of Fried Cabbage (savoy cabbage that was pan-fried with a house spice blend, topped with shredded coconut). The cabbage was also served cold, so not sure if things were just being left or not heated properly? Staff are friendly and efficient; the interior of the place is small and cozy. I love supporting local and small businesses no matter where I go. As such, I made it a point to visit the highly rated restaurant, Cane, during my time in DC. After much anticipation to dine here, my overall experience was just okay. The restaurant is a cute little spot and is well decorated and the service was friendly, but the food was a bit of a mixed experience. I found that the menu offerings, when brought out, were more fusion-style in taste than traditional, which I wasn't entirely expecting. Some dishes were quite good like the beef roti, but others fell a bit flat, like the doubles. At a price point of seven dollars each, I definitely had my expectations set high on the doubles. The bara's consistency was a little tough and the channa and sauces (tamarind, chandon benni/culantro/bandanya) were underwhelming. The Chinese style chicken tasted nicely as it was served but again the flavors were more of an American fusion style than a traditional take. All in all, I would give Cane 3 stars. While the service was very kind, the entrees left something to be desired. If you're looking for traditional you may want to find a Roti Shop but if you're looking for a fusion twist on traditional dishes, Cane is worth checking out. read more

First time here! Found street parking pretty easily on Saturday night. Checked in via yelp before arriving and was seated immediately despite a few others waiting ahead of us. Nice vibe. Loved the mix of afrobeats being played. Wait person was nice, attentive. We started with "doubles" which was our favorite of everything we tried. Tender roti dough, flavorful chickpeas and sauce. Just fabulous. We also tried oxtail which was flavorful and super tender. And, there was a bit too much fat on them. Pepper pot was the least favorite. It had way too many fat pieces and too many bones without meat on them. The rolls served with it were flavorless and dry (didn't get eaten). White rice was cooked well. Crispy Kale was crispy although the only flavor came from the aggressive spicy (unbalanced) salsa-like topping that seemed added on top as an afterthought. Eggplant was a stewy (mushy), unattractive, flavorless too small (tiny) a portion for $8. Drinks--whew! The drinks. Nice and strong and amazing. Tried the purple passion and the old fashioned. The bartender clearly made them like he was making them for himself or family which was appreciated! Browsing through instagram and the good ol' algorithm got me and steered my scrolling attention to Cane. The restaurant is cozy, but small. Granted most restaurants that have a home sit in DC are but just keep in mine if you are planning to dine with a large party. Luckily it was just myself and my wife, so it wasn't a big deal. The waitlist was very easy to use through Yelp. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu when we ask for suggestions, so that was a plus. We didn't plan to drink but the cocktails sounded so good, I'm glad we tried them. I'm they type that like sweeter cocktails and these were right up my alley. The island Life (Dark Rum, Mango-Ginger Shrub, Lime Ginger Beer) was pure flame emojis, I highly recommend. The real reason we came here was for the Jerk Wings, that's what they are known for, and they didn't disappoint at all. The wings you can't go wrong with if you visit. The underrated star of our experience at Cane was by far the Hops Bread...LISTEN! if you get ANYTHING here make sure you get the Hops bread, sounds crazy but trust me. Warm soft rolls, with house made butter you will thank me after you eat them. The Oxtail was just ok. I think its just more of a preference thing as far as how I like my oxtail prepared. This is my second time having Cane and it has great food but the service needs to be significantly better. If I could, I would give Cane 3.5 stars but am rounding up to 4 because of Cane's response to my experience several months ago. I had ordered a dish no longer on the menu for delivery and there were several things wrong with it, which I had posted about in my Yelp review. A Cane manager reached out to me, asked me about the issue, apologized, and gave me credit for a future visit. People make mistakes; Cane's accountability and going above and beyond to do right by its customers when it made a mistake is outstanding and deserves to be publicly acknowledged and praised. My friend and I went to Cane for an early dinner on a early-week weeknight. When we arrived, Cane wasn't busy but slowly filled up (although not packed). Cane is small but homey, with a welcoming ambiance and a place where you can have a conversation without raised voices. My friend and I were seated and ordered off the digital menu quickly. However, our service quickly took a turn for the worse from there: 1. The food took a fairly long time to come and came in a bizarre manner (I received my main before my appetizer) 2. My friend ordered the Trini Chinese Chicken, not the Geera Pork, which we didn't realize until we received the check. While my friend was OK with it and mix-ups happen, this one feels especially not great as many people don't eat pork for religious or ethical reasons. 3. The Geera Pork arrived far after the other three dishes 4. My friend did not receive a spoon with his soup 5. Our server did not come by after we had received our food and we had to make a concerted effort to get our server's attention. Cane charges an automatic 20% gratuity for dine-in which they are up-front about. However, on my receipt they had additional suggested gratuity, which felt like a slap in the face as a customer. Additionally, while I understand charging an automatic 20% gratuity, in return I expect quality service, which my friend and I did not receive. With all that said, the food itself was amazing. My friend ordered the cow heel soup and the chicken (received pork instead) and I ordered the jerk wings and the pepper pot based on Yelp and food critic recommendations and they were fantastic. The portions were also generous at fair prices. The jerk wings were well-seasoned, perfectly cooked, and deliciously spicy. The dipping sauce also had excellent flavor and paired well with the wings. The pepper pot is especially good for people who are a bit more adventurous-be prepared for tougher cuts of meat than regular beef, but still delicious. There was a good amount of rice, a reasonable portion of meat, and a hearty sauce. The rolls were underwhelming but didn't change the overall dish taste nor its quality. Amazing Caribbean street food restaurant in DC. Location is great as well in a hot hang spot. When we got there we had a bit of a wait as the seating inside is limited. What a great find. I've never eaten about this side of DC but after Cane I am left curious. The restaurant isn't huge inside. Cozy would be a great way to describe Cane. The wait staff are very friendly and food comes out very quickly. No island time here. lol I appreciate the expediency. The menu is on a QR code. There is a distinct lunch and dinner menu. I came after 5pm. I need to come back to try their lunch menu items. We tried the doubles, jerk wings, oxtail and as a side ordered the fried kale. Fried kale is a must try. If you cannot handle spicy ask them to put the hot sauce on the side. The yellow sauce is a pineapple sauce and under it there is a red hot sauce. It's so good but it might hurt some people. Cane is one of my favorite D.C. restaurants. I have had their lunch and dinner multiple times, but only as takeout, and finally made my way to their brick and mortar during Howard's homecoming weekend. As you can imagine, it was incredibly busy, but the staff did a wonderful job at greeting my party and I, seating us in a timely manner, and presenting us with what they still had available. Given that it was homecoming weekend, some of the dishes were unavailable by the time we went in for dinner, but that did not stop them from still having a variety to choose from. Some of my favorite items are their Trini-Chinese style chicken, curried beef, doubles, and crispy kale. Their jasmine coconut rice pairs perfectly with their curries and spicy dishes- it is by far some of the best coconut rice I have had. The Trini-Chinese style chicken has all the flavors you would imagine and makes for the perfect savory dish, with just a hint of sweetness. If you're not a kale fan, their crispy kale will have you reconsidering- it is a MUST. If you enjoy sweeter cocktails, you'll definitely enjoy their rum-forward cocktails. After a long search, I finally found a place in the DMV area that offers an ox tail menu. I visited during lunchtime and was pleasantly surprised to find a lunch menu available. I ordered the Jerk wings and ox tail bowl, and both dishes were incredibly delicious. The ox tail was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were outstanding. I was amazed to find such high-quality food in the DMV area, and I can't believe I never knew about this place before. Waitresses had one AirPod in their ear and I had to ask multiple times for water refills, even though the restaurant is pretty small. After finding a hair in my dish, the server removed my plates but forgot to give me another set of plates + utensils. I had to ask for all of them. We got the jerk chicken wings, oxtails, and fried pork belly. I found a hair in my jerk chicken wings... I was compensated with 2 extra wings. They were tasty and probably the best tasting dish IMO of the ones I got but the experience was ruined. The ox tails are an experience. They are huge and one serving could probably fill 2 people. Everything was delicious but those wings were something to remember, so this time, I stopped by on a Wednesday evening in July while I was in town and bought some wings for takeout. My husband and I visited DC on Thursday for a concert. We searched for somewhere unique to eat and stumbled into Cane. Cane was a simple 5 minute drive from our hotel, so it was the most convenient option. I am glad that I selected this restaurant, because our experience was AMAZING!! The venue is small, but there are plenty of seats to accommodate the crowds. I would suggest making a reservation rather than just showing up. We were lucky, as we walk right in at 5pm when they opened and got snagged two seats at the bar. The gentleman working the bar was awesome. He was able to answer any and every question we had about the menu. He also engaged us in plenty of small talk. He hat the experience very enjoyed. After speaking to him and getting a few suggestions, we decided to order the hops, the Jerk wings, the Escoveitch snapper, and the Trini-Chinese Chicken. I also had the Island Life cocktail. Each and EVERY dish that we ordered was the exceptional! All of the flavors were amazing and the dishes were cooked very well! I swear, I'd we had the time, I would have ordered additional food! As a devotee of spice-forward cuisine, I was interested in a few things on Cane's menu. I don't get around to the H st area much, as I tend to be unlucky with (free) parking there. Parking was available at the time I went (weekday, early evening), though that is not always the case. Ok, so it was much smaller than I imagined it would be - I'd think people are turned away on busy nights. There is also only one bathroom - apparently a one-person bathroom, so be prepared for that if you have little ones or incontinence. The service was ok. I think because it was empty, the server seemed to be into their phone but it was easy to get their attention because of the smallness of the space. The restaurant seemed clean and bright, with stylish, earthy furnishings and decor. One thing I loved was the music - they played soca the whole time I was there, which was a refreshing reprieve from hearing the same songs all the time. Only problem is that it made me want to dance and it was a bit snug in there to be moving around. The food ranged from ok to disappointing. The menu was limited. There was nothing I really wanted. No chicken. I decided to have a vegetarian meal but tomato choka sounded unpleasant (I grow several types of heirloom tomatoes but I'm picky about them; I also don't like cooked tomatoes). Anyways, I do LOVE chickpeas and seeing doubles on the menu was the main reason I came. The doubles were fine - definitely my favorite of what I ordered. The savory/sweet/hot/cold/creamy/crunchy combo is satisfying, though I might not have liked all the constituents on their own. I also had the fried cabbage and plantains. The fried cabbage was bland, room temperature, and not particularly fried. It was giving unseasoned steamed cabbage vibes. As greens person, I felt sad that I was compelled to eat this dish that seemed to have been prepared well in advance of serving time. I like my fried cabbage to be rich and flavorful and this was not the case. Beyond that, the plantains were thick cuts such that the texture and doneness varied widely though the depth of each bite. The flavors cited on the menu (cinnamon etc) were not detected and it generally had a sour taste as well as not seeming completely cooked in the center. I might stop by again, if someone else is paying and really wants to go, but I don't get the hype. I wanted to give an extra star as I understand it might be a black owned business and I'd want someone to show me love in that way. However, I think it is overly hyped to the point where the ratings/reviews need to be more accurate, especially to people who are more familiar with Caribbean cuisine, as there are many Caribbean restaurants with better food. read more

My first thought was, "Dayum it's expensive." Then I took a bite and was like, "Dayum it's worth the money!" I ordered the Ox-tail and was exhilarated by the flavor. Nice and tender with a savory Trinidadian sauce. I'm used to eating Jamaican style and these tasted different (in a good way). Not only that, I took a bite of the coconut rice and fell in love. Amazing appetizers and drinks. The jerk chicken, shrimp wonton, beef patty and especially pork belly appetizers were AMAZING!!! All the entrees(my table ordered different ones) were very mediocre. The pepperpot was especially disappointing with the very small oxtail portion of it being mostly bone. Great ambiance overall as it is neat, clean and intimate.
