A little background on our situation: my husband and I have a lovable French Bulldog that has just finished 4 private sessions with Ashley. Our Frenchie HAD a huge issue with leash reactivity. When she was about 5 months old, we took her to a Frenchie meet up for an opportunity for her to socialize with her own breed. I waited a couple of days to write my review just to see if the training that me and my boy got would work. My boy has been a major leash puller, he would literally pull to the point where it become embarrassing. I wanted to get him trained just because having an American bully who is unaltered is already intimidating to some people already, but if you add leash pulling to that? It's the worst nightmare of some people. I would get so embarrassed and felt sorry for my dog because instead of helping to alleviate the stereotype of pits being scary, I was reinforcing it by making it look like I couldn't handle my dog because he would walk ME down the street. Fast forward 6 days after, my dog has improved so much it's crazy. He does pull still, but on very rare occasions, usually when the distraction is too "amazing" to ignore like, seeing other dogs, but not as bad as before. He doesn't pull anymore when there is no - little distraction and walks perfectly 80% of the time now. I'm sure he will improve as more days goes by, but as what Ashley says, "the more you practice it, the better he will be on the leash" and he is 100% right on that. I reached out to Canine Tutors because I am fostering a German Shepherd/Mastiff Mix, Koda, that weighs 90 lbs and pulls on his leash. The combination of his pulling and his strength makes walking him a nightmare. Plus he is intimidating to other people, though he is an absolute love. Being able to control him is very important. So the first 5 minutes, Ashley spent assessing how bad his pulling was as he just pulled me from side to side. He could see that I was using all my strength to keep him still. Ashley told me that the best thing to use would be a pinch collar. At first, I was a bit scared that it would hurt him, but he assured me that it wouldn't and he had me touch it, etc.. Oh my goodness what a difference it made. He stayed right by my side. We would walk and as soon as he wanted to pull, we would change directions with the technique that Ashley taught me. I felt like Ashley would have stayed there all day with us doing the technique. Luckily I think that I got it down after about an hour. He followed up that same day with a link to buy the collar that we used. And has been following up periodically since then. I am happy to say that even with that just that training that day, Koda has been walking much better on his leash. We adopted Shasta, a border collie/husky mix, 6 months ago. He came to us, shy and not very trusting of us. We speculated that he may have been abused by a previous owner. He was also a master escapist. One day he escaped and ran down the street and I followed him, in the pouring rain. For an hour. That's when I knew we needed help. I read the reviews about Canine Tutors and decided to give them a call. We have a 12 year yellow lab and we needed help to get him to climb a ramp to get into our SUV versus jumping into the car. My son Tony was afraid of dogs. My apartment is too small for a dog so we did not have one. When Tony was between the ages of 4 and 7, it seemed like every time a dog owner invited Tony to pet their dog, the dog barked and lunged at him. This only reinforced Tony's fears. I asked Ashely whether Tony could meet one of his dogs at the dog park. I figured since Ashley was a dog trainer his dog would be well behaved and do nothing to scare Tony. As expected Ashely had his dog perfectly trained. Once Tony realized that his dog was not going to bite him he started to become comfortable and actually pet Ashley's dog. This was a huge leap for Tony. Before this Tony shied away or cringed at the sight of a dog. He refused to even pet them. I can not blame him. Tony was just using kid logic: 1) Adults have told me their dogs are safe to pet; 2) When I try to pet the dog, it lunges at me; 3) Dogs are not safe, especially when an adult tells me they are safe. He is an overall easy going guy and I think that helps greatly when it comes to training. We really like that his methods are reward based. After four sessions we are delighted to be getting results with our dog who has historically barked unrelentingly at all strangers. Before working with Ashley of Canine Tutors we tried reading and following the guidance of three different dog training books and several videos. Then we hired a professional trainer who was highly reviewed. She helped with one issue but, overall her method was too complex & murky to execute. Ashley's methods are simple and clear. I have learned enough in four sessions with one of my dogs that I have been going home and training the second dog using the same methods. Ashley is good at delivering the right amount of information in each session. After all, it's us, the owners who need to be trained! He never says that but, I appreciate that he is very patient with me as I make mistakes. He is never patronizing. He just clearly lays out a good strategy and explains as needed. His methods are kind and come from real appreciation and affinity with animals. The hard truth that dog training takes lots of repetition has been a blessing in disguise. In committing to 15 reps of each command twice a day, my difficult dog and I have a better bond. I feel closer to her. I think she enjoys the training. Knowing that repetition is key, Ashley has structured the training as a dog training club. This is great on many levels. For less than I paid the aforementioned mediocre trainer, we can come as often as we like (easy to sign up online). So, it's a bargain. Sometimes there are other dogs there since five people with one dog each can show up. Having other dogs there is perfect in our case because our dog also typically barks at dogs who are strangers too. Yesterday she started understanding how to not do that because Ashley is skilled at adapting the training for everyone's best advantage. Both dogs got practice not barking at each other based on cues from the owners, not just because they got to know each other. I could go on but, suffice to say I have had good results that I know how to maintain, and good ongoing support for reaching all of our goals with the dog we used to call our difficult dog. All of this for less than most trainers charge (it's not cheap but, it's a good value). Ashley is also a person with integrity. When he has needed to change anything, he has made it right without being asked to do that. I will update in a month or two when we have reached the goal of being able to have multiple strangers to our home at once without our dog freaking out. I can see that we are on our way now that she has already learned to be quiet, mostly, with one stranger approaching. This has been a great experience and a relief!! Ashley is the best. We are dog sitting a 9 month old shih tzu named Happy for an extended period of time. We had so many issues with Happy when he first came to us. On his walks he would hoover up everything on the ground and then throw up the following morning. He would lunge at people whenever he went outside. And at night he would try to wake us up constantly. After going through 5 private sessions with Ashley, Happy is so much better. My dream was to work with my standard poodle off leash, but at about the age of 1 and 1/2 years, my energetic dog (or should I say "my dog and I"?) had developed huge problems regarding chasing inappropriate things, getting over excited around other dogs, and an 'iffy' recall.
