We stopped by here for a lunch on the go while doing a foliage tour of western Maryland. This was a random stop as we were starting to get hungry as we were approaching Swallow Falls. They have daily specials that are on their board inside. Currently due to covid, they do not have indoor seating, but you can go into the restaurant to order. They will take your food to the half door and call out your name for you to pick up. They have a couple of outdoor tables that you can sit at to enjoy your meal. I'm not entirely sure that they clean the tables afterwards at this time due to covid. I found the daily special list and as per usual for a slightly cooler day I wanted soup and half a sandwich. They don't state anywhere on the menu that you can order half a sandwich but the staff did tell me that it was possible as long as I was not ordering anything on ciabatta or focaccia. I got the mushroom barley soup which was good I may want a little more pepper but still pretty good. I also got the turkey sandwich. The boy got the cheddar and roast beef? sandwich. The boy's sandwich was cut up into quarters had i known that I probably would have just stolen the half a sandwich that he couldnt finish. They also had generous sized cookies -- i got the special and the boy got the chocolate chip. The special was an oatmeal, raisin, chocolate, pecan chocolate chip cookie which i thoroughly enjoyed but it did take me 2 days to finish. The boy says that his chocolate chip was good but he's happier with a softer cookie so he wasnt as happy as I was with my cookie. Overall a good experience will have to come back and try it after covid is over and they are open again. read more

I'm vegetarian so finding a decent, healthy meal while traveling can often present challenges. Canoe On the Run, however, did not disappoint. They make things fresh and do a brisk business so you have to wait a bit, but they make that wait well worth it. I enjoyed the Morning Breakfast sammy while my husband devoured a breakfast chili bowl while relaxing on the open air deck. Their coffee is the best we found in Deep Creek. Another of my favorite places in Garrett County! I've been here several times. It's really nice to sit on the deck and have lunch on a nice summer day with a glass of wine (and their selection is great). I'm a vegetarian, so I usually get the SW veggie wrap. I also get sucked in with the soups of the day. There's usually something I just can't turn down. This is my go-to lunch place in DCL. I've also had their breakfast burrito. It is good, I won't lie. this is the 3x i've been there & every time has been pretty different. this time was the worst of the 3 though. i HATE to give restaurants anything but 5 star reviews but.. :( they did however follow the safety regulations for covid pretty well!! but upon reaching the counter, the younger girl taking our orders was having a hard time understanding what we were saying AND seemed to have a hard time writing it down as well... like to the point of it being alarming. had to correct her about every single thing we tried to order 2-4 times no exaggeration. we all have our days but this didn't seem like "a day" for her. she was kind nonetheless but maybe shouldn't be cashing people out. she also wrote a completely dif name for our order lol like not even close so hadn't my mom gone up to get us straws for our lattes we wouldn't have heard them call us obviously; since again it wasn't even a name close to what we gave. the chili was subpar. no meat in it which is fine but it tasted like tomato soup w beans or even marinara sauce. weird. the tortilla chips i dipped in it made it better. the sandwiches weren't that great either. not a lot of taste or ooomph. just basic. dry too. maybe ask for extra sauce or a sauce in general when getting them. the latte also didn't taste right. i typically get soy, which they were out of, but settled for almond but an almond milk latte doesn't taste the way this did idk. all off. overall experience was a 4/10. it wasn't terrible or really unpleasant just not a place i'd go to again now. especially since we drove an hour for it. read more

This place is more than I would normally spend on food but it is in a tourist area so I am not surprised. Plus the food is more than worth it and they bring it out to you. I had a chicken nut grape sandwich on ciabatta. The best part is they allow dogs on the deck so we don't have to put our pooches somewhere before going to eat. Nice big space to sit down and have some coffee and food, or to grab something to go. Good location near a lot of the outdoor activities. However, the food selection is fairly limited. My main reason for a mediocre rating is that it was incredibly slow - there was one person ordering in front of me and two staff, only one of whom seemed to be doing any work, and just mosied around very slowly preparing the order for the person in front of me, just ignoring everyone else in the shop and everyone else in line, to an almost comical degree. I almost gave up and walked out, but my need for coffee was stronger than my frustration. I really tried to give this place a fair shot, but after my most recent visit during the July 4th weekend I'm done. I've been here 4 times and every visit there's been multiple issues. The very first time I came, the bathroom was dirty and the food took a long time to arrive. As many other reviewers note, the prices are not cheap. The food quality and serving size has never matched the price. The pastries taste stale. Each visit I've made the staff appears to be less then thrilled to have customers. They're not overtly rude, they just look stressed and annoyed. It doesn't matter how many patrons there are, the food always takes a long time to arrive. On my most recent visit, staff allowed a customer to stand in line for a lengthy period, order, pay for his food, and then finally address the fact that he was not wearing a mask. (The customer had his shirt fashioned around his head to cover his mouth and nose.) I find it deceptive to wait for someone to buy something before trying to kick them out. The manner in which it was addressed was not appropriate either. The employee that spoke to him had an attitude/tone in addressing the customer and did so in front of everyone, which made for an awkward experience for the rest of the customers. I fully understand the guidelines right now and believe they should be adhered to, but it was not a professional way to handle the matter. read more

Their food is fantastic and have never been disappointed in the menu. I also appreciate they serve bottled beer and wine. In my last visit, our order taker seemed a little 'new' and there were a few missteps on the order. They've done a really nice job in rearranging the deck to space appropriately for outdoor seating without making you feel like it's anything other than normal. My family recommends Canoe on the Run. Our group had breakfast sandwiches, morning sandwich, BLT breakfast sandwich and I had oatmeal. Everything was fresh and filling, but not overly filling like you can't move. The boys loved their frozen mochas. The coffee was perfect. It's a cute place to grab breakfast, lunch or just hang out for bit. Definitely recommend if you're not looking for a chain restaurant. Several recent lunch appointments have found me eating out and enjoying Canoe On The Run at Deep Creek Lake. Open for breakfast and lunch only this restaurant makes the A list for dining options at Deep Creek Lake. Located in McHenry it is a great year round location. They offer a static menu but everyone found the chalkboard specials to be the best. Breakfast is straight up with a great assortment of fresh pastries and breads. In my opinion it is lunch time when this place shines. Some may ask how hard is it to screw up soups, salads and sandwiches? Read some of my other reviews and you will see. Unfortunately it seems finding people passionate about a job in the food service industry is hard to come by in Garrett County, I love the concept of counter service to avoid disaster. The staff may not be the friendliest but they take and process orders in an efficient and correct manner. The atmosphere is hip by Deep Creek Lake standards the place clean and there is a great deck for alfresco dining. When it comes to the food? Fresh quality ingredients with some creativity and great flavor combinations. This is not a grilled cheese and tomato soup place. If it was on the menu expect delicious twists and new standards. The fact that this great dining out option at Deep Creek Lake has kept the doors open for this long is testament to the satisfying experience of eating out at Canoe On The Run. Stopped here for breakfast on our way out of town. Disappointed we didn't stop earlier as we would have been back frequently. Anyway we stopped this morning and I had the breakfast burrito and my wife made a special request due to diet allergies (gluten and dairy). The burrito was different than I am typically used to but it was excellent. Fresh ingredients and excellent flavor. They catered very well to my wife's food allergies. The food was fantastic. The staff is lacking in personality and humor but they get the job done. My kids LOVED the soups and tried things they had not tried in the past and enjoyed it. The oatmeal was some of the best I have had. Ate there twice while on vacation. Would have eaten there everyday if I could. Would like to see less woodlan bugs in the place but it was not gross. Would so totally go back, again and again. Dont think the staff will ever develop a sense of humor. read more

I debated 4 or 5 stars, so really I'd give it a 4.5 if I could; it was definitely excellent, but not out-of-this-world delicious. Food is refreshing compared to other options in the area--I dig a good deli sandwich. Be aware, Canoe On The Run is currently only open for breakfast and lunch. I ate lunch here, so I can't comment on the breakfast, although based on my experience I would guess that it is probably good, as well. This is a great place to go if you feel like going out but don't want pizza or something heavy. Prices are very reasonable. I just had a turkey sandwich, but for some reason it seemed better than any turkey sandwich I've ever made myself. All of the ingredients (bread, meat, cheese, greens, etc.) seemed super fresh and high quality. They also have some delicious homemade desserts that are hard to resist. I love coming here whenever I am at the lake! It's a wonderful spot to grab some breakfast or lunch. It's the only place on this planet that I will order oat meal (trust me, it's that good). Overall, its a cool place to get some good food and a hot drink. The inside is very relaxing with lots of windows, or you can sit outside on the balcony. Very tasty lunch offerings. The quesadillas are delicious and every soup I've had has been amazing as well. They've got a variety of café style beverages and pastries/cookies as well. I have been several times, and without exception, the wait times have been astronomical. Like 'what could possibly be going on back there to make it take so long' astronomical. It's worth it because the food is very tasty and fresh, but it is a drawback, especially if you're on a time crunch. It is one of the only- if not the only- more 'panera' style eateries around (soups & sandwiches being the main offerings) which is why I frequent this place when I'm around. Canoe is a great eating option while at Wisp. We had one breakfast and one lunch here. They offer a huge selection of freshly baked pastry & cookie options. For lunch, if they have the poblano chicken rice soup...get it!! I have been trying to duplicate the recipe since we got home without any luck. Prices are reasonable here and the staff is super friendly. The size of the restaurant is deceiving. There were not as many tables inside as the size of the building would lead you to believe...so get in a bit early to beat the lunch rush if you are planning to eat in. The coffee deserves 5 stars, but the food was not good at all. We came here for lunch on our way out of town, so I'm rating the food with 1 star. The soup was bland with no flavor. The 2 sandwiches we had were just ok. One was a turkey deli meat with mango, guacamole and curry mayo. The combination didn't work. The other sandwich was dry and had precooked processed chicken. The kids menu consisted of Hot Pockets (store bought), corn dogs (frozen), ham & cheese or turkey & cheese on white bread, pb&j, and quesadillas.
