" One Hour Later" So I approached the hostess with no attitude only an inquisitive question on how much longer and she said she didn't know. I mean like as in I don't care. She never looked or apologized...not even an excuse. So I asked for a manager and we were seated immediately. I expect spit in my food. This will be my last visit here. Be warned.... Went for lunch. We loved our first experience. It was for lunch. First of all the artwork on the walls is really captivating. Fun just to walk around and observe everything on the walls. My youngest daughter, wife, and I were driving from JAX airport, crossing the bridge to our hotel on Amelia Island, looking for a place to eat. The Cantina seemed like a good match and was right by the bridge. How convenient. As we pulled in, I noted the beautiful live oak tree with hanging Spanish moss in the parking lot. Being a late Wednesday afternoon, we found plenty of spots to park. We were seated immediately at a table with a view of the water and their fake alligator. Our server quickly appeared to take our drink order. Since it was before 6 p.m., the apps were half-price, and the premium margarita was a couple of bucks off. We placed our order and enjoyed their chips and salsa before our food arrived. My daughter got a giant California burrito. She wasn't a fan of it, saying it was too heavy on the rice and beans. My wife and I opted for a signature taco platter. She picked an Al Pastor (pork) taco and a Surf and Turf taco. The pork taco meat was disappointing, but the beef and shrimp taco was tasty. My chimi chimi bang bang steak taco was fantastic. I also had a yummy Sriracha taco with deep-fried shrimp and slaw. The platters came with healthy portions of rice and beans that I enjoyed. The service was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the dining room and the gorgeous water views. I found the prices to be great, and overall, the food was fresh and tasty. Leftover chicken enchiladas bc my dinner came out after the party of 5 I was with finished their meals & I didn't want to make them wait while I ate. Quite a few things went wrong . Let me preface this by saying I don't blame the very young server who was obviously not trained well if at all, and should not be on the floor. Not a manager in sight nor did we ask for one bc the server was so flustered we did not want to press the issue. It took 20min before we were greeted, it was not extremely busy but, every server was young I didn't see a actual adult or anyone in management. Poor server was so nervous, didn't introduce himself and immediately asked what appetizers we wanted before drinks and ran away after we ordered , eventually when appetizers did arrive he never checked back , however he had that check ready at the end haha. Food is okay, was not served hot (minus the actual plate being hot) and stale chips. Would not recommend for decent Mexican food IMO. We didn't get any cocktails but the restaurant itself is really nice and would be a good place for a bite and drink if you're not in a rush or want to just hang. She said she didn't know. 20 mins after that again I approached and again she didn't know. When I asked to speak to a manager she huffed off and the manager sat us immediately. The table we sat at was open for over 30 mins. Just Why?!? if you don't like your job then go get a new one. Although the manager did finally seat us there was no apology no explanation no anything. Spending the week in Amelia we usually prefer beach dining or go downtown. We decided to try this place based on photos of outdoor patio and ambiance. So glad we did! Patio was cool and beautiful (even at 1pm in August) and service was fast and friendly. They have a weekday lunch special menu that was very reasonably priced. Loved this place so much that I had to go back a second time! This place seems to always have a full parking lot as I pass by it. My first visit, came in and was greeted and asked if I wanted to sit inside or outside and let the host know we would take whichever was quicker. He let us know that the bar had seating available and that would be the quickest, so we opted for the bar. As soon as we sat down, the bartender put down napkins for drinks and asked if we were eating or just drinking. Once we let her know we were eating she handed us menus, silverware and quickly brought some chips and salsa. I had three different margaritas: spicy watermelon, raspberry, and banana. I have never had a banana margarita before so I had to try it. The banana flavor was very light...I would have liked a little more banana. The spicy watermelon was my favorite. The perfect blend of sweet and spice with a tajin rim. I ordered the birria tacos which were delicious. They serve them with a green salsa that was to die for. I could put that salsa on everything. My husband ordered the carnitas plate which of course I did have a bite and the meat was so tender and well seasoned. The rice and beans were also very flavorful. With everything being so great, we returned a second time. This time, we did sit at a table and the server came right away and let us know that there was a drink special of the day, which my husband order. I went right back to the spicy watermelon margarita. This time I ordered the street taco basket with two carnitas tacos and one carne asada taco with a side of rice and beans. Everything was so delicious and I got so full that I had to leave one bit of taco and some rice and beans. It is a day of the dead theme inside which is nicely done and they had a mural with a couple of celebrity likenesses. This was my first visit to this location and besides the service being a little slow, it was great! To start, parking is shared with another restaurant so there's not a lot of space, but that was ok as we didn't go during a really busy time. I loved all the colors everywhere. They had great music playing. The atmosphere is just really fun! You can eat inside or out. We choose to sit inside and the booths are pretty spacious, which we need being a family of 5, soon to be 6. Which speaking of, we did take note there's plenty of space to be able to take a car seat in and seat all 6 of us once the baby is here. I had a few questions about some items I was unfamiliar with on the menu and the waiter was patient with me and knowledgeable. Once the food arrived, it looked so good and tasted even better! As I did mention, service was slow but our waiter was also working tables outside so we decided to just let that slide. I'm just hoping the next time we go, it'll be faster. Afterwards, there is a separate area outside where you can just hang out so there's kids played around out there. It was a great place for the whole family. Cantina Louie is a truly great addition to the Amelia region. The food is not your standard tex mex but true authentic Mexican fare. I ordered the Pastor huarache , which is kind of like long sope covered in pastor meat and traditional toppings. And I also tried the tacos and Mexican corn that my companion order and they were really great and a generous portion. To drink I had the Horchata water , which is a rice / cinnamon sweet drink traditional in Mexico and made really well in Cantina Louie. My wife researched this restaurant before we came to Amelia Island on our mini vacation. We decided that Friday before the dinner rush would be the best time to stop in. The restaurant is at the intersection of Gateway Blvd. and Amelia Island Pkwy. This is a very busy intersection so be careful entering Gateway Blvd from the Pkwy when going Northbound (turning left). Upon entry, we noticed that there were only two tables occupied and 4-5 people at the bar. We were greeted promptly by Carlos our waiter. Carlos informed us about the happy hour specials and was speedy in taking our orders, delivering our drinks, providing complimentary chips and salsa, and our main course. Carlos was exceptional the duration of our visit and I highly recommend him to other patrons of this restaurant. Between three people, we shared two orders of Taquitos ($6.99 each, $3.50 at happy hour), one order of Chicken Empanadas ($7.99, $4.00 at happy hour), two baskets of complimentary chips and salsa and five Fro-Jo-Rita's ($6.99, $3.50 at happy hour). Honestly, this was more than enough food! We walked out of there comatose. The Fro-Jo-Rita's were delicious and packed a punch! I usually get a stomach ache from all the sweeteners in frozen margarita style drinks; however, these were made just right. The chips were freshly cooked, hot-n-crispy right out of the fryer. The salsa was pureed style, flavorful and complemented the chips well. The Empanadas (3 per order) were crispy, crusty, stuffed with chicken, cheese, and poblano peppers. Simply divine! The Taquitos (4 per order) were fresh, crispy, and packed with chicken. These crispy delights were so good we needed to take a batch home for a late-night snack. We felt that the queso, sour cream, Pico de Gallo, guacamole, and queso fresco complimented the dishes perfectly. We enjoyed the ambiance and vibe this restaurant evokes. The artwork is amazing! If I lived in the area, I would frequent this venue often. If you are from the area, definitely give Cantina Louie a chance. The staff is friendly, the venue is unique, spacious, and clean; they have a great happy hour/lunch specials, and free WiFi. We came here during happy hour in August 2020. And oh my gosh did we get happy! Not only is the decor in this place just amazing, the food and drinks are amazing too. We had the happy hour margaritas which were only $3.50. And we had the empanadas and the taquitos. I think that's what they were called anyway they were delicious! Happy hour is until 4:00 p.m and all the appetizers are half price. Free chips and salsa. This place is really cool it has inside and outside seating and a little pond with a fountain. It was our first time here since we just moved to the area. It is a cool place with outdoor seating with patio string lights and by the water where you can see gators. It has a lot of potential, but it fell flat. Food: You get free chips and salsa which tasted good. I don't think it's unlimited because they never ask us if we wanted more. The house margarita was pretty good but weak, could barely taste the alcohol. I did not like the steak California buritto at all: the steak did not taste fresh and felt grimey. It just tasted like one sloppy mess. My husband had the La Padilla which tasted better with fresher meats: steak, grilled chicken and carnita. But it would have been better if it came with a side of rice or beans. Ambiance: Overall a cool space but they do not fully utilize its potential. The outdoor patio is very large and pretty. After 9 PM, they should move the tables and make it into an outdoor bar with live music and a dance floor at least on the weekends to make it a popular hang out spot for tourists and locals. Probably won't be back because we want to continue to try all the different restaurants at Amelia Island. read more
