I've been coming here for over six years and was a regular for many years so leaving this review makes me pretty sad. We had a very rude server over the weekend. I was excited to show my brother who had never been to Cantine my old stomping grounds, but our server was so rude when we just asked a simple question and then continued to be rude unprovoked later on. My co-workers and I came to Cantine for dinner as we were in Watsonville for work. I always love tapas, so I was definitely excited to try this place out. Upon walking in, we learned Wednesday nights are trivia nights. Our team wasn't really feelin' competitive, so we opted to sit at the bar. I was starving at this point (it was around I think 7:30PM), so I just ordered a bunch of items from the menu. Below are some of the things we ordered: - Roasted brussels sprouts - Good taste, and not too salty. A nice way to make some adult decisions and get some veggies into our meal. - Fingerling potatoes - I REALLY liked these, but maybe because I just like everything potatoes. The sauce on the finger-sized potatoes gave each bit just enough of a taste. - Burrata with persimmons, honeycomb, etc. - Okay, the honeycomb was kind of hard to cut but MAN, did it taste good with the bread and cheese! Honestly the crostini was toasted to such a great crunch and wasn't hard to tear apart with each bite (as it is with other places). - Charcuterie - Your normal charcuterie, so nothing that really stood out from other places. We were just feelin' a little fancy that day lol. - Macaroni & cheese - This wasn't too heavy like mac'n cheese can get, but our group was getting stuffed by the time this came out. I would definitely get again because those bake breadcrumbs were yum! - Gnocchi - One of our team members really like this, and ate almost the whole plate. - Meatballs - These were actually really good. Great flavor! - Chicken pot pie - I regretted getting this once I took my first bite. The deconstructed chicken pot pie didn't really work from a serving standpoint, as the bread got pretty soft from the sauce. Also, the taste of the chicken pot pie didn't give that warm, fuzzy feeling I usually get. There were quite a few groups playing trivia that night, and it was fun to play along without actually competing. Always a fun place to have a great glass (or two) of wine. Wonderful ambiance...you can choose to sit inside or out on the patio. They even have blankets. Great selection of wines both local and international. Nice choices of small bites as well. The staff is friendly and professional. Thanks to Jules for remembering me and making me feel welcome. Katiana is awesome as well. We love the small plates that Jordan creates in the kitchen. Charcuterie plate is wonderful. The dates are pretty awesome as well. We came here with some reservations given some of the previous reviews. But this team has figured it out. Friday night - place is pretty busy and service, food and wine all exceeded expectations. We ordered two rounds of drinks and two rounds of tapas. Wine is very good and delivered immediately after ordering. Food was delivered within 5 to 10 minutes and everything was great. Dates - great starter, artichoke - tasty, special shrimp - over the top , meatballs - savory. Glad we made the effort and so glad the team here is putting in the energy. We have been to Cantine several times. We enjoy the location with ample parking. We enjoy the decor and the indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating overlooks a lovely ravine. We enjoy the well crafted wine and beer selections. I go for the beer and my wife either a Sauvignon Blanc or Chard. A couple of others things we like are the frequent live music on weekends and the general chill atmosphere. Its a mellow and inviting place to go. I give Cantine four stars due to the lack of food choices for vegetarians. I can go here and get a snack, but I can't really get a full meal. So we generally come in for a drink and head elsewhere for food. It is hard to keep a restaurant going (I know, our family owns one in New York), so its great that they are still in business. I found this place to be great. And excellent variety of carefully chosen, rare and delicious wines from around the world. The 3 wines I tried were served at the perfect temperature, a generous portion, interesting and delicious. They even had a wine from A small appellation from Loire in France. I love the idea of this place. Situated in Aptos village...you stumble through the doors into a fairytale. Inside is a welcoming lounge. But, outside the patio rests on an endless veranda...forrest fauna and creek whisper romantically. I love the idea of a "wine pub." The local-centric wine selection was somewhat adventurous: like drinking your way through an expensive farmer's market. However, the service was quite terrible. Both times that I visited here, I fear that I may have smelled bad or worn my invisibility cloak. True, both times I ventured from Nisene Marks...but...I promise that I did not stink too much. On our most recent visit, my boyfriend and I struggled to get a hold of our waitress to ask for water, and food menus. She seemed completely bent out of shape from our outrageous requests! Speaking of food! Do not come here if you are a dairy-squeamish vegetarian. The only thing that I could order was bread and an over-priced-deviled egg. These items took over 30 minutes to arrive?!? Did your chicken need to lay an egg? If you have a sublime location and you serve alcohol, why should you bother to provide good service and nourishing snacks? The service isn't good. Beer and wine is over priced. Owners obviously love to sniff their own farts judging by the smell coming from one of the corners. If you are an aging wine snob, sure... I'm positive you will love it here. The chicken pot pie is good. That's why it gets the 2nd star. If you don't have to wear glasses to read a menu it's probably not going to be a place you will want to come back to anytime soon. Plus the seats are not comfortable at all. I had been to this place before and really enjoyed it. This time I brought my wife in so we could play our weekly game of Yahtzee. We were thrilled that they had Sante Adarius on tap so we ordered our beer and settled into a nice quiet part of the main room. About half way through our first beer a gentleman came up and told us we were too loud shaking the dice. Then when we got the tab I was stunned that it cost us $46 for 4 pints of beer. I am giving one star to the miserable service we received. We were ignored the entire night! I went to the bar twice to ask for food or drink and to just be visible. In the end we waited and tried to get attention for 15 minutes to pay the bill!! The funny thing is that there were max 3 other tables .. empty for a Friday night.. we waved in the end because it seemed the hardest thing to get someones attention.. then the "manager" Azia shouts from the bar and gets all upset that we tried to wave at her to get her attention after 15 minutes!! I can't pick the winning Lottery numbers, but I can sure hit Cantine every time they host a private party. One time we actually got in and seated on the patio, ordered our wine and were told we had about 20-minutes before they were going to be hosting a private event so we couldn't order any food. I guess it's kind of unfair I even post this review on Cantine since I haven't really had the chance to experience them much more than a nanosecond, but the frequent private party closures are frustrating. read more

I really really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere was super cozy. Kid friendly. Had live music. However the the service was spotty and the food took over an hour to get and came out randomly. The deviled eggs were terrible. A ton of lemon was added and made them taste horrible. The flight for beer was perfectly priced, however the flight for wine was overly priced. The local Alfaro Chardonney that was served was terrible. We believe it had to do with how long it had been sitting there because we have had it before and it didn't taste like that. We would love to come back but not sure what to expect the next time. read more

A great place for a small plates dinner and a good selection of beers and a great selection of wines by the glass, always rotating with new discoveries. The small plates chef is great - one of the few who knows how to cook calamari tender and not to rubber. And always special recipes. Nice West facing deck for sun and sunsets, and comfy chairs and benches inside for fog. A favorite for just us and for a small group of friends. Friendly staff who treat everyone well. Come here if you seriously like getting ripped off. Every time I go (not my choice, friends meeting here), I say I will never come back again. I spend loads of money and leave needing to go home and eat dinner. It is seriously NOT COOL to charge $8 for 4 tiny stuffed mushrooms. Multiply that by the numerous "small plates" that a group typically orders, plus drinks, and you will leave wondering where your money went and raid the fridge at home. I can't get my money, my time or my calories back from this place. To start off the tables were so sticky, just nasty. We ordered the olives which were fine. We got a glass of pinot which was terrible. We tried ordering soup which we were later told it was too old and had gone bad. We should have just stopped and got the bill but we ordered more food after being told the soup was bad. We ordered Mac and cheese which was salty noodles with shredded cheese melted on top. My daughter wouldn't touch it, it was so bad. We also ordered the gnocchi which had a werid after taste. I like the concept but won't be back. read more

The wife and I decided to check this place out not long after they had opened, and we found it to be a very nice addition to the mix of businesses in Aptos. First off, I'm not much of a wine drinker, which is why I was happy to find that they had a decent-sized beer selection as well. While the selection doesn't always match up with my preferences, I got to try something different (Flying Dog Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout) and something familiar (Dogfish Head IPA). The atmosphere of the place is very casual and nice. They have a bar area, but they also have a lot of places perfect for lounging and conversation. My wife and I sat on the patio and enjoyed the sunset. Food-wise, everything we had was very good. We started with the cheese and charcuterie plates, then moved onto the tortilla espanola and ended with the cayenne-spiced chocolate bark. I enjoyed everything we ate and would have eaten several other things on the money if I had the capacity. As much as I enjoyed everything, this place, and the food especially, is pricey, which makes it hard to turn it into a regular stop for us. However, I can see us coming more often for the wine and beer, as its got the vibe for in a watering hole. I stopped by Cantine this evening on the way to a get together with the girls. I had remembered that not only did they have a fabulous wine selection, but they had a lot of yummy pairings. Upon entering I was greeted with a smile and then helped by an adorable server, Jules. Jules was so helpful in ordering and making sure that everything was going to be good once I got to my destination 30 min away. She even put some of their amazing olive oil and balsamic in a container to go with the Kelly's focaccia. Needless the food was met with rave reviews! I ordered the burrata with citrus, the truffles deviled eggs, arugula salad, and the salted Carmel brownie for a treat. Amazing!! Why Cantine is probably a better pick than any other hh spot in the area: +killer patio/ view to enjoy with your drinks - a beautiful spot to watch the sunset / enjoy the sunshine (they have umbrellas if you want shade too!) +burrata and pear appetizer was amazing +well priced wines even though they weren't "hh" prices +indoor seating is relaxed and fun, but not "divey" so you still get a fancyish feel +fast service +avoid the tourists - this is a place for locals and you're avoid running into a tourist trap Pretty much nails all the qualities you want at a bar. Went here last night. I ordered the Cabernet and I swear it tasted like Pinot noir. I think the place is overpriced for the quality you should be receiving.I didn't think they had a lot to choose from but everyone there looked like they were having fun but I was extremely disappointed by my glass of wine.
