If you're looking for a cheap happy hour or a sports bar setting, look elsewhere; Canto VI is not the place for you. Canto VI is an oxymoron. It is an establishment in a very seedy part of Chatsworth, where homeless and cheap fast food joints prevail, yet it prides itself on a strictly enforced dress code of long pants, no flip-flops, and no Jerseys (don't even bother coming if you're wearing unapproved attire--most of the negative comments here appear to be the result of people not reviewing the dress code prior to arriving). This previously was a very seedy dive bar that has been transformed into a delightful, upscale wine bar. Master sommelier Brian Kalliel's selection of wines is outstanding. When I questioned him about the excellent selection, he replied honestly: " I serve what I would drink," and he does, at very reasonable prices. The staff at Canto VI are very professional. They know the wines they serve and have excellent suggestions for food pairings. There are plenty of delicious options on the menu for any taste, be it a small plate option, cheese board, or main dish (we had the lamb frites, which were melt-in-your-mouth good and paired excellently with the wine that Brian selected for us. This place is a gem in a neighborhood that has been starving for a quality upscale wine bar (or upscale anything) for years. I have to start by saying that I have been in food service for many years. I had wine bars, restaurants, coffee shops etc, so I know the business from that side as well. With the guidance of the gifted sommelier Brian Kalliel, I was transformed to a magical stage where he is both the educator and the entertainer. Brian's knowledge is unparalleled but his charm and craftmanship in creating an experience is nothing short of miraculous. What an amazing find here in where? Chatsworth?! Ok, once you get past that hard to believe reality you can move on with yet more disbelief as the menu surprises yet again. The decor is upscale with warm low lighting and the staff is just as inviting. We sat at the bar with Brian who regaled us with stories about the history of the food and the places it comes from, the flavors, wine parings and so much more. Visited a second time and was quite disappointed. We felt kind of pressured to buy the wine flight, There really is no afforable wine by the glass. The food was also disappointing. My friend ordered a salad with dressing on the side which they forgot to put on the side. The portions are very small. They were very attentive to another party who was ordering more food and wine than we were ... A breath of fresh air, this local hot spot is just what we need here in Chatsworth. It is so rare to find a place where owners truly strive for the highest quality in all things: food, drink, and ambiance. It's a home-run! Though they are often super busy, they make time to offer personal attention in a personable, friendly way. The environment is truly unique in a quaint, elegant way. Check out that fire-like lighting! I found champagne there that beats my previous favorite Dom Peignoin, and it didn't break the bank. The appetizers are unbelievable, and the entrees truly first class chef productions. I would call the place affordable upscale. Not necessary to dress formal, but I won't go dressed down in gym clothes or gardening jeans. It's more than common middle-range pricing, but nowhere near other places that try to offer premium quality food. I can't see why anybody wouldn't make it a regular experience. I have been lucky to travel all around the world. Best part of my travels was the Culinery experience. I found a place that you will not need your passport to have a fantastic time. I visited this place last week and was a little hesitant cause I was not expecting much and I had one of the best evenings in quite a long time. My suggestion, no matter how big your party is-reserve to sit at the bar... It is everything! It is a fantastic wine and culinary experience. If I had sat at a table, I would've missed so much. The wine is fantastic every single dish was yummy. Let Brian and Lance take care of you. You tell them what you think you like or don't like in wine and food and they put everything together for you. This is not a place you will be out in one hour. Plan to stay a few hours. Food portions are very small, but you take time eating it with your wine and by the time you're done , you are very happy! I'm so torn about writing this review because I want to keep this spot under cover. BUT the food is AMAZING. Every dish we had was flawless - the duck mousse, goat cheese pastry, herb salad, the pasta and the bone-in filet. Then the cheese plate and then dessert. Seriously - mind was blown by the food. Not sure where to start! Our visit at Canto Vi could not have been better! The atmosphere/vibe is intimate and romantic! You step into the restaurant and feel like you're stepping back in time and give you that old Hollywood feel. The food was fantastic! So much flavor! Hi Brian, in reading your response to Tom B I am a bit disappointed. The night we were in there were several girls with very short short shorts and flip-flops and you told us that was OK because they were women. Yet the week before we were denied entrance because we had shorts and flip-flops. You actually told us it was OK because you wanted girls in there which is discriminatory might I add. We were hoping for a unique experience as we've always loved Pete and his wine store. I think he would've been very disappointed that evening had he been there the night we were there. The food was fine. The food was not the issue. The age of the crowd when we were there was definitely over 50 and the music was hip-hop techno. We suggested to you that you look at the crowd and then pick your music to fit the crowd. It was about 530 or 6 o'clock at night, I can see you changing the music when the young ones come in, but it was loud and certainly not to our taste. The biggest complaint was the discrimination we felt. Looking at the crowd there were so many women with a dress code that you say you do not allow and yet you denied us the week before and then you were rude to us. As stated previously, we really wanted to support Pete as he's done a lot of parties for Tom's business. We are very active in the Chatsworth community and the way you treated us was horrible. This establishment could be very successful if structured differently. They claim to be a speakeasy type place which isn't mentioned on their website. You have to go up to the bartender to order your food and drinks at the bar. Who wants to stand in line and do that? If you don't order wine then you are going to have to wait as they are extremely under staffed so there were only two working the bar and taking food and drink orders for the entire place. We received and finished our appetizers before we received our drinks. On the other hand the wine was given immediately at ordering for those who only wanted wine. The food was delicious but skimpy for the price. The appetizers were upscale but the choices for entrees were limited. There were 3 pasta choices and none sounded desirable. They only offer seating at 6:00 and 8:00 so apparently they get hit with orders all at once and with limited staff they set themselves up for failure. The person who seated us at 6:00 mentioned we might have to leave if our table was booked at 8:00. Giving us only two hours with limited staffing is not good. The music was too loud until the live duet started. I thought the place claimed they did jazz on Saturday nights yet the music was more folksy but enjoyable. The wine flight consists of three glasses were good wines. 3 glasses for $35. The booze prices were high for a speakeasy type place. I hope they restructure because they have real promise. read more

As long time Chatsworth residents, circa 1993 - we were so excited to see a brand new spot open up.. 2 of us showed up last Wednesday - around 6:30pm, about 95 degrees out, waiting for our friends to arrive.. giggled about the valet parking, parked across the street for free, hoping our car wouldn' t be broken into or damaged.. it's chatsworth after all.. we were greeted and looked at the menu, rolled our eyes with the many overpriced wines.. but ok.. we'd give it a try.. but oh no.. our friends showed up a bit later, and we were told we had to leave as our friend showed up in shorts!! - they were nice shorts, not cut-offs, and a polo and closed toed shoes. So, we promtly left, walked to the Star next door (they graciously welcomed us) had a few rounds then went to dinner at Maggianos.. The sad thing is that we told 4 friends and they'll tell 4 friends and they'll tell 4 friends and soon this fine establishment will be history.. why? for a number of reasons..but #1 - they obviously didn't do their homework before opening this lovely restarnt!!! It's Chatsworth after all..IHOP couldn't even stay in business! We would have been happy with a nice italian with a full bodied chianti! read more
