Predatory, Aggressive and Dangerous practices - Avoid at all costs I have been a patient with Canton Smiles for over 2 years. I have periodontal gum disease and my treatment plan was to close the gap in my 2 front teeth in order to proceed with a treatment in hopes that they can treat avoid extracting my teeth. They referred me to a prosthodontist and I have been under her care for about 18 months, and alternating cleanings between her office and Canton Smiles. Yesterday, after being examined by my prosthodontist and my orthodontist I was referred back to my periodontist in Canton Smiles for treatment of inflammation behind my 2 front upper teeth. I scheduled and appointment at Canton Smiles with Dr. Schatz. Instead of receiving medical care, I experienced predatory bait-and-switch. First, the periodontist Peter Schatz was completely unprepared and asked me what my own treatment plan was. After explaining my history, he diagnosed a periodontal abscess and left me to go "consult" with Dr. Reza. Dr. Reza then came to the examination room and proceeded to push and extreme financially motivated scheme to extract 8 of my front teeth for bridges. I asked to consult with my prosthodontist, and reminded him that I was there to treat the inflammation in my gums. I was then approached by the front desk lady to discuss my the treatment plan for extracting teeth and bridges. Once again, I had to ask about the treatment for the inflammation, she said she would need to speak with Dr. Schatz. She again returned and told me that Dr. Schatz was going to be sending a script to the pharmacy for the abscess and he would not be willing to treat my abscess until my 2 front teeth were extracted!!! Extremely dissatisfied that Dr. Schatz couldn't find the time to discuss his the treatment for my abscess, I asked her to send the treatment plan to my prosthodontist and I would discuss it with her. I immediately consulted my orthodontist, who shared his disappointment with how Canton Smiles handled this abscess. He confirmed that he is aware of my bone loss issues, and that he does not see the red flags being raised by Canton Smiles' extreme claims. Canton Smiles tactics feel more like an attempt to bully me into expensive, unnecessary surgeries. They care about money, not medicine. Stay far away. read more

Still a Great Dental Office The staff is friendly, professional, and helpful. This is a different kind of dentist office. They have great service and payment plan options too. I'm not someone who usually leaves negative reviews, but I've never had an experience this disappointing and want to help others avoid similar issues. To make matters worse, when I called afterward to ask questions, the staff was unfriendly and surprisingly rude. Smiles Dentistry in Canton - please stay away! At first, I was impressed, but things changed quickly. They have different cleaning charges depending on what they "find during the exam," and they require you to sign a contract agreeing to the cleaning price before they start. I had some swollen gums, which they said required a deeper clean, and I was told the cleaning would take about 45 minutes. The actual cleaning lasted less than 20 minutes, and it was no different from cleanings I've received at other in-network dentists. The same findings (swallen gums) were noted by other providers, yet none of them charged extra. Between the unexpected charges and the unprofessional attitude when I called for clarification, the whole experience was incredibly disappointing. read more

They are all smiles and nice, until the actual need for customer care arises. I had an appointment to have a crown installed. Prior to the appointment I had an existing implant bridge start to get loose. These implants are the type that you can just remove the existing plug at the bottom of the teeth and then retighten the exposed screws, and then replug the access holes. I drove 40 miles to get them the X-ray showing the bone was good, and all the actual information (type of implant and type of screws), so I could get this handled before doing the crown. They then advised to come in for my scheduled appointment 2 days later. At that appointment (after driving 40 miles again), I was advised that Dr Reza was not willing to tighten the bridge, even if I supplied all the information and wrenches to do the tightening. He would not even come out to talk to me about it and would also not be willing to call me. The result was that they refused to do ANY work at all, until I had the implant bridge tightened by somebody else that they were referring me to. This was because if they did the crown on the side of my mouth opposite to the bridge, I would not be able to chew. Of course they knew this 2 days earlier, after I dropped off the X-ray. But they never reviewed the X-ray, nor did they call me back before my appointment, as I requested. I then asked "since I am here, and have the time booked, can we just do some other fillings that also needed to be done. Bottom line, they refused to do anything, and Dr. Reza refused to come out and discuss it. They had zero empathy with my situation, and I left very angry. I never heard from them after (it's been a month). The end result is I am done with this practice and have no other recourse but to post my experience, in hopes that others may avoid having a similar experience. By the way, tightening an implant bridge is something simple, that ANY dentist CAN DO. He was just unwilling to do it, no matter what the inconvenience to me. read more

I have been a patient here for over a year. I drive 45 minutes to come here. I got divorced and I have asked them multiple times to change my name and remove my ex husbands number and name off the account. The past 2 times I was here this was a recurring issue! How can you tell me you've removed my ex's name and number and to this day it is still on the account ? They keep calling my ex after I have repeatedly asked for the number to be removed off the account to confirm MY appointments! I even talked to the billing department to change my name and number bc I needed copy of some documents and his name still shows up hyphened next to mine. Today I took off work and drove 45 minutes for my appointment that I have been waiting on for 3 months. I get here and the office is locked/closed. I never received a call or email from the office regarding the cancellation or rescheduling of this appointment. I received an email to confirm my appointment for today on both June 21 and July 5th - which I confirmed. Still they didn't reply or call to let me know my appointment is canceled and I have to reschedule. I call to ask what's going on and they tell me that they called my ex to confirm my appointment!!!!!! We have been dealing with this for over 8 months ! Why is his name and number still on my account when I am the one paying for a yearly membership and I am the only paying patient? Why do you only call once to cancel or reschedule an appointment? And why do you call only one of the two numbers on the account ? There are 2 numbers !! That means you call both numbers and make contact with the patient. Completely unacceptable. This is unprofessional and completely bad business ! Absolutely ridiculous. If you want my ex so bad as a patient then please call him and fix his missing and rotting teeth. read more

I've been there my first time on the 13th of January knowing they took my insurance. I was really excited to get braces next month. After the visit they told me i needed filling and gum cleaning. After calling Jasmine to set up the appointment on 3/7 she told me that I only needed to pay 481 for two visits that's why i scheduled them Monday and Tuesday . I called on the day of my appointment she then was reading off a different financial agreement form which was not given to me or was i notified that they changed it because she told me i didn't have insurance. So now i have to pay 900 for those two days because "I don't have insurance " She told me that she looked it up online and told me my insurance ended. I told her my insurance is active. The lady didn't even call my insurance to verify it was active. All through the call she kept saying " well you don't have insurance " all shady. Her voice is very monotone and her face at the office is moody and she doesn't smile which made me very uncomfortable . very ugly. I'm so disappointed because she lied many times to me . I also wrote things down last time I called because dentist offices are scams at times. After seeing yelp reviews I knew I was in deeper than I thought . After calling another dentist office i was told that I don't have to pay NEAR to what Canton smiles offers. I'm glad I didn't go in this place to do any type of work . Everything about our experience, from staff to equipment to cleanliness was top notch. My teeth have never been so clean and we can't say enough about this place. I had to cancel a cleaning due to Covid. Tried multiple times to reschedule. Each time I was told I'd get a call back to reschedule. Never heard back. I'm switching dentists. I don't like going more than six months without cleanings, two months of calling to reschedule without success has forced me to look elsewhere. Definitely don't recommend this office. read more

When we first moved to the area, my mom and I went here to get established with a new dentist. Everyone was very friendly, and the office was pleasant, but my mother (who had an appointment at the same time as me and who is a medical professional with 25+ years of experience) noticed that she didn't see a single person wash their hands, nor were there any handwashing stations visible throughout the office. (This was before COVID, but of course still a concern for a dental office!!!) After talking to some of her co-workers and hearing their horror stories abour the abysmal hygiene practices in this office, my mom decided we wouldn't return. At the time, I had been feeling pain in my lower right molar area, so they took X-rays and told me I had 4 wisdom teeth that needed to be removed. Later, after we realized how sketchy this office is, I went to a different dentist to deal with my wisdom teeth. The new dentist took X-rays of their own and told me I had ONE wisdom tooth coming in (where I had been feeling pain) and another that MIGHT end up needing to be removed. Which makes me wonder - did Canton Smiles lie and say I had 4 teeth that needed to be removed so they charge us for it and cut my mouth up for no reason??? Why else would they say I had teeth that need to be removed when those teeth didn't even exist? TL;DR: This office is sketchy and suspicious at best, do yourself a favor and go to any of the other countless dentists in the area. read more

I went in for an appointment for a cleaning and got told I needed a deep cleaning and something similar to a crown on my teeth they wanted $800 something out of pocket with my insurance already paying 80% of it. I went to a different dentist and they said I am not anywhere near needing a deep cleaning and also I don't even need anything done to my tooth. This place is a shady scam BEWARE!!! WARNING-BEWARE My wife and I went in for a general cleaning. They took X-rays and pictures of her teeth and did an exam, but not a cleaning. They said she needed a scaling cleaning because she has a number of 5 and 6 pockets. That a crown that had come off would need an implant and probably a sinus lift. They also told her that another tooth needed a crown. She decided to go to her old dentist for a second opinion. Her old dentist did a normal cleaning and only found one 4. He is making a new crown for the one tooth and said she just needs a filling on the other tooth. BEWARE of Canton Smiles as this shows they are ripping off their customers. read more

But I loved the efficient way everything was handled. 2 other doctors said one of my teeth would have two be pulled and this doctor at smiles saved my tooth and they have put 3 crowns on. This dental office is exactly what I've been searching for, for the last 15 Years!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this wonderful team of experts!!! 100‰ patient satisfaction! Everyone is so professional and so friendly. From scheduling my appt, checking in, full mouth x-rays, complex cleaning, root canal and crown (BTW: they have a machine in their office that makes porcelain crowns. So, I had my beautiful crown b4 I left - impressed), talking about the financial options and knowing that I'm fully informed, discharge, and Dr. Somerville. They ALL work very well together and respect one another. Dr. Somerville is gentle & meticulous & was even the one that greeted me in the lobby and escorted to the X-ray room & not bc others were busy. Everyone kept me informed the entire time. They made me feel very comfortable as if this wasn't my first appt. I need quite a bit of work done and to be frank, it's embarrassing. But no one said anything that made me not want to open my mouth. In fact, I'm going back to correct the rest of my issues and restore my confidence in smiling proudly again. I'm so excited! I love that I can bring my family there for cleanings and even Orthodontistry. I love their hours and that Saturday is also an option! This place ROCKS! Thank you so much for a wonderful experience. I walk in for a standard cleaning yesterday and they tell me I need a deeper cleaning, ok. I tell them I will schedule for a later date as I had not allotted additional time for additional services. After only two years with this outfit, during one visit I was told the doctor would be "right with me" and after 40 minutes waiting I left. They never followed up. On 5-30-20 my wife and I had crowns replaced, the written price was $3877.00. We paid in full the same day. 10 days later I receive a bill for $150.00 for "Professional Services". No other explanation or service code. Nowhere was there posted any additional charges over and above the written fees. I have called 3 times to get a clarification and have not received a return call. Apparently they are trying to make up for lost income from the shutdown. I was there today for a cleaning. I was told by the staff there that I needed a deep cleaning. After reviewing the cost, my cost after insurance was $890.00. I stated to the lady that I could not afford that today. She left the room and came back to say " the doctor can not do the regular cleaning the insurance covers unless you do the deep cleaning". This is extortion and denial of treatment that was covered by insurance. I will never go there again. A 3 year customer I am no longer. I do not recommend this place. read more

7am appointment with the Mr. so called Dr. Christian Alvarez. I received the worst care ever. The xray Tech came in to give me another Xray- I simple asked why do I need another X-ray I just took one literally a few days ago. (hence why I have the 7am appointment). The X-Ray tech simply stated the Periodontist ordered it. I said well can you please have him come and explain why I need another x-ray (when I just had one done by this office a few days) and for him to come and explain it to me as to why the initial x-ray wasn't good enough that was previously taken. I heard her ask him and instead of him coming to explain to me he told her that its been two years since she had one. I then got out the chair and went around the corner to ask him instead of the half-azz answer he gave her to give me. I asked him why isn't the first x-ray not good enough and even though I'm not paying for it (per the tech) doesn't meant I will allow you to charge my insurance company for services that is not needed (Fraud is what came to mind). He then proceeded to not answer my question his last and final statement to me was "I don't think this relationship is going to work out" Interesting. We don't have a relationship idiot you never came to see me- so then I cancel and ask for a refund of my pre-paid services. Being an independent contractor - you don't speak for the company at all- I believe in the brand and the services I receive with Canton Smile Dentistry and Orthodontics for 2yrs (Also I'm a cancer patient (in the file) and now this being rude, disrespectful and evasive. Per the website he stated and I quote. " I genuinely appreciate the time my patients take to see me. I understand how hectic life can be, and I promise to give you attentive care. Where do I begin? First, I've been asking for a statement of what's owed for months. I haven't seen a statement since my son began orthodontic treatment two years ago. I've been blindly paying hundreds a month with no idea whether it's fraud or not. Secondly, I found out that even though I had requested that they check to make sure the claims were going to the dental insurance that I have on file, they had not been sending the claims to the insurance company (but I had to call my dental insurance to find this out because no one in the office is competent, apparently.) And lastly, after all of the above issues and a slew of provider changes because they can't manage to keep an orthodontist to save their life, I asked to be transferred out of the practice TWO MONTHS AGO and they still haven't done the AAO form (which is industry standard) and therefore my son is now overdue to get his braces checked. I've lodged an official complaint with the parent corporation, Smiles Generation, over a month ago and never heard a word back. I filed an official complaint with the Georgia Board of Dentistry today. One thing I learned from this fiasco of a practice is to be VERY CAREFUL about who you select as an orthodontist, because once you're locked in, it's difficult for a variety of reasons to transfer to another provider. Please beware. This practice is unprofessional. In addition to all of the above issues, the cleanliness of this practice is reprehensible. Several times we've been the first patient of the morning and there's still leftover salads, burgers, cups, and filth from the day before that's overflowing out of the trash can that's right next to the Keurig machine that's been broken for months and has slimy frothy water sitting in it. The communication from the provider to the patients and parents is also extremely poor, but it couldn't be improved at this point because there's a new provider every few months, so there's no consistency in messages and treatment plans. I have never encountered such an unbelievable group of people in the more than 75 years of experience with dentists. I started being treated by Dr. Tina Sampat shortly after moving to the area, and was quite impressed with her. I needed a crown, but had to put it off for over 3 years as we had limited financial resources that were dedicated to my husband's serious health issues. With his passing, it was time to address my concerns, but all I was left with were many thousands of dollars of outstanding medical bills. I was despairing of having my dental needs met before I lost my tooth. I contacted the office manager, Jon, concerning my husband's remaining bill. Within a few minutes, he called back to inform me of their yearly community service day, and booked an appointment for me. All the while I was going through the procedure, I was surrounded by their beyond excellent staff. Dr. Sampat is, and always has been the best. I also was introduced to Lexis who has to be the best dental assistant in the world. Trust me, the money spent on my teeth over my lifetime could probably build the Taj Mahal, so I know excellent people when I meet them. Sorry I forgot the name of the hygienist, but she was great, too. And, did I mention that I walked out with a new crown that day, and before noon! Unbelievable! And, then there was Jon who was so compassionate and caring. I was brought to tears by the sympathy card signed by everyone and the flowers when I walked in. I'm torn about this rating. The dentist and endontist were wonderful. The office staff were top notch. However, their billing practices are at best erroneous and deceptive at worst. I needed a lot of work done, including a root canal. I went in for my exam, was given a quote with a complete breakdown of everything included. I paid a portion of the balance up front, and financed the rest through their Smile program. My payment was set up on bank draft. The following month, I received a bill for roughly $600. I called them and they apologized profusely, told me they didn't know why it was happening, and promised to correct it. I received the same bill the following two months. Each time I called them, I was told it would be taken care of, that they knew I didn't owe it. I told them I was concerned about the account going to collections and was advised that wouldn't happen, since that has to be done manually and they'd flagged the account to prevent it from happening. The fourth month following my dental work, I received a collection call. I explained that I'd been told I didn't owe the $600. The man then told me that I should come in and we'd go over it. I went to the office and was told the $600 was for charges that should have been included in my quote but weren't. They had lost their copy of the break-down they provided me initially. They asked me for my copy. I haven't been able to locate it as of yet (though I'm sure I will when I have a day off work to really look), but I can't imagine how it's possible for me to sign an agreement to pay a quoted amount only to have them decide *after my dental work was completed* that they should have charged me more. I'm waiting for this account to go to collections and I'm frustrated, resentful, and seriously furious over it. I'd trust Canton Smiles with my dental health any day of the week. I wouldn't trust them with my wallet again for anything in the world. Edited 6/6/17: Just received a call from Canton Smiles Dentistry. They've agreed to "write off the balance owed". I'm beyond relieved, though that little voice in my head reminds me that I didn't really owe an additional balance to begin with. I'm not sure why they decided not to pursue collections, whether they realized it was the right thing to do or if they just pay attention to their online presence and saw my review. I'd like to think it was the former, because the people I've dealt with have honestly been so courteous and friendly. In any case, I'm leaving my review up because I think people *should* know this sort of thing can happen. There are plenty of benefits to using Canton Smiles. Aside from the great staff, which was already mentioned, they do excellent work, they offer extended hours (which is ultra-important when you work nights and sleep during regular business hours) and they are also very flexible with regards to scheduling and work-ins. If you want to use them, I'd say go for it as long as you pay *very* careful attention to billing and keep up with receipts far better than I do. Edited 7/13/17: Annnnnd, here I am a month later dealing with a new bill for nearly $1700. I called last week and left a message, but didn't get a return call. I sent a message through the website yesterday, and still didn't get a call. When I called today to get to the bottom of this (again), I was placed on hold for a while, then advised by another person that I received the bill because I hadn't been making my payments. I'm pretty livid at this point and said so. The person I spoke with asked me for my receipts (which I have, because I get them via email since the payment is autodrafted). I did ask why they weren't able to see my payments when everyone else I've spoken with since February had no trouble seeing them. The gentleman asked me not to yell at him, which was kind of hilarious since I never raised my voice. Am I completely at my wits' end? Yes. Was I short and sarcastic? Very likely. I'm pretty sure I mentioned how even though I work nights, I'd absolutely dig up receipts since it wasn't as if I need to sleep during the day or anything. However, since this is the 6th month I've gotten billed and the bills just keep getting larger, I'd say I'm more than entitled to be a little ticked off. In any case, the man promised to call me back, and I immediately went to my email, pulled my receipts, and sent them to Canton Smiles. I needed a crown on a molar. The one I had for years had come off. I was given an appointment with Dr. Foreman. All that I am going to say here is that after the novacane wore off, I was in terrible pain because she had cut my tongue in several places, but did not tell me. I complained to the office manager. I then had a follow-up appointment with Dr. Sampat to take care of imperfections--she did good work. Then a few weeks later, the new crown Dr. Foreman had just put on-- it came off. I was out of town, but found a dentist willing to help. Once back in Canton Dr. Foreman approved refunding my expenses, and even though she saw me, she never even apologized for the agonies she had put me though. read more

terrible service from the office manager "jon"!! i have used this office a few times in the past with okay service but never again. i had a root canal done in feb 2017 and a cap put on another tooth, everything was okay until june 8th 2018 when the cap came off. i immediately called them and was able to setup an appointment the next day. when i was seen by dr. tina sampat, she informed me that by looking at the previous xrays from feb. 2018 that the tooth should have never been capped off and that a root canal should have been done. i was very skeptical and asked why it wasnt done then because i have it done by them!?? she then tells me that unfortunately she does not know and that the dentist who did it was no longer there. she said they would put the cap back on temporarily but it may come off again and if it does it would be very painful because i have an exposed root (and it was!). june 9th, 2018 - i scheduled the root canal and paid for the service in full, which was the worst mistake ever! never give them any money prior to a service!! the soonest i could be seen was 3 weeks later. june 11th, 2018 - my cap came off again! i called 2 different times leading up to my appointment to check if any cancellations had been made so that i could be seen sooner but was told no. june 26th 2018 - i arrived at canton smiles for my root canal appointment but there was no one there and in fact, the office said closed! finally someone arrived at 8am, i went to sign in for my appointment and was told that they didnt have me down for the day. i told the receptionist that i was supposed to be there at 7:30am but they was not open. she told me the only time they schedule at that time is for root canals. omg!!! i told her thats what i was there for and she said that the endodontist was not there and had to have a procedure performed but that all of the patients scheduled were notified in advance. i was never notified! i was not happy. i live over an hour away and arranged for an overnight babysitter for my kids so that i could be there at 7:30am. i spoke with jon (office manager) who apologized and said everyone was supposed to be notified. i told him i wasnt, and it was a major inconvenience, waste of time and that i had to take off work just to be there. he checked the schedule and of course there was nothing within the next week and i was going out of town for vacation the following week. i was in very bad pain and didnt want to wait any longer and had already waited 3 weeks and prepaid. i told him i wanted a refund and i was going to find someone else to do it. he said he would process the refund that day on june 26th 2018. it is now august 7th 2018. ive made several calls to jon, who has made repeated promises to put back on my card. even confirmed that the refund was being processed by sending me an email. weeks later, i still havent received anything. he tells me to check with my bank, i did, they refered me back to them. now hes changing his story telling me that i had to wait for the california office to process the refund and send the refund check to me?! i sent him an email asking that he please call since he said he would the previous day (but didnt) and to confirm that they processed the refund. he calls me on august 2nd saying that the refund check was mailed out to me and i should have already recieved it. i asked him to confirm the address it was sent to and it was wrong!! he sent it to an address in canton, ga!!! i live over an hour away from their location in canton, ga. i was very upset and asked him why??? he wasnt sure and said he'd contact them. on august 4th i spoke with him again to see if he found out anything. he told me that another check was sent to the correct address and i should receive it on august 6th. it is now august 7th and nothing has came. i called jon back and he told me their accounting department said the address was undeliverable. i told him that was a lie! i told him he can go to fedex and put the address in himself and see! this is completely unacceptable. i told him that at this point it would be quicker to just dispute the charges. i called him back and told him that it probably was undeliverable on the other address that he said was originally sent to canton! he then said he just got an email with a tracking number for it. i will wait and see.... never deal with these people, bad service and very poorly managed! read more

I felt like family the moment I walked in the door. The receptionist were very friendly. They have all the latest technological advancements. I was very impressed. My dental assistant Tomecia was very friendly and made me feel like family. The hygienist that cleaned my teeth was very knowledgeable and compassionate. I absolutely loved Dr. Andu. She greeted me like we had been friends forever. She was very knowledgeable and explained my treatment options very well. I appreciate her taking the time to explain what treatment I needed. Awful!!! Took full advantage of my elderly parents and robbed them of $2300. They charged them for an assessment and a gingivitis test (that was not needed because they go to the dentist every 6 months) and pushed for unnecessary work. This dentist was in network with their insurance. My parents who are elderly went to this dentist and asked if they accepted they said yes they did and they were in network so an appointment was made. They were never told about this hidden charge until after services were rendered. They went to the appointment , the assessment and test was conducted and prior to leaving had to pay 800.00 up front and the rest later. They had to drain their entire savings just on this one visit. After that visit they were in so much pain from the test and assessment they were cause it is not a necessary service... I'm so angry they took advantage of my parents and they never once shared that there was a separate fee that insurance doesn't cover. This should be illegal. They should have shared this with them prior and given them an estimate and the opportunity to choose whether they wanted to proceed or not. They should be reported to the better business bureau and I am speaking to our lawyer over this . Absolutely disgusting that they would do this ! read more

I needed to find a dentist for a second opinion on the price of a crown that was needed. This dental team was efficient from scheduling my appointment to the pricing of the crown. I was also able to get my crown the same day! This Dental Practice is very efficient, courteous and does great work! I will recommend to my family and friends! read more

I love this place!! The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. The digital X-rays didn't hurt like the regular ones usually do. Dr. Andu was so kind. She didn't find anything wrong with my teeth! Other dentists always do :( my cleaning was amazing! I wish I could get my teeth cleaned everyday :) I referred my husband and my dad. They were happy also. I'm going to refer my friends here.
