So we're from out of Baltimore and since we've been here, we've been looking for a nice spot to satisfy those random wing cravings. Now if you know Baltimore, you know we take our wings/chicken boxes seriously. You also might know that the best wings are inversely proportional to nice, clean spots. I'm talking about them hood wings, the ones you can only find in holes in the wall with... literal holes in the wall. We've been to and tried out Wings over happy valley and our experience with their wings was somewhat "meh" with friendly service. So when those cravings hit, we decided to branch out a bit and find something a bit easier on the wallet (another quality of good hood wings). We found canyon wings, and the reviews ironically enough got our hood senses tingling. We ordered the 25 wings with island dryub on one half and garlic hot sauce on the other. We also had sauces on the side: jamaican jerk and WTF sauce (they called it their spiciest sauce... more on that later). When we came to pick up our order and were met with somber atmosphere and the gruff but polite customer service... I knew we'd hit the jackpot. I felt right at home (again if you're from Baltimore or DC, You know what I'm talking about!).These guys understand flavor (finally)! Also let me hype what I can finally say is the closest we've gotten to authentic jamaican jerk I have tasted in State College thus far (not yet there but, close enough)...which unlike some might think, is (and in these guy's case actually tasted) different from island sauce! These wings hit all the right spots! Now about that WTF sauce...we're also African (so we like our flavors!). So... while we can say the wings pass the flavor test...Uh ... I'm learning that we have a different understanding of what hot and spicy is...it was more like...mild warm-lite. Tried the bone wings and boneless. Both left something to be desired but i think the boneless ones were better, which is kinda disappointing as i usually prefer the boned wings as those are real wings... The sauces were fine but i didnt like the wings themselves. They kinda had a funky taste about em as if they were slightly undercooked. I dunno but i wont be tryin this again. I have ordered Canyon Wings twice now. The first time I just ordered 6 wings- priced at a disappointing $6. The wings themselves are definitely not worth $6. Just go to the grocery store and buy frozen wings and you'll be eating better food. The second time, last night, I ordered the $4 special that comes with 1 chicken stick (not sure what that is), pirogies and 2 pepperoni sticks. If you like chicken nuggets served in mysterious sauces, this is the place to go! I ordered the 5 boneless wings and waffle fries combo, as did my friend. I ordered Jamaican jerk which, turns out, is a dry rub and tastes like Cajun and old bay mixed together. My friend ordered garlic Parmesan which had a sour taste somehow (almost lemony). I called the shop to see if perhaps they had given me someone else's order, as both Cajun and Old Bay were listed on Grub Hub as options. The guy on the phone was condescending and said "Yeah, it's a dry rub. It says so on the site." I said "Well we went through Grub Hub and it didn't..." I was interrupted with "Nope. It says it on there. Sorry. Goodbye." Please Google what is in Jamaican jerk and compare this to the picture of my wings. Also note the chicken-nugget-esque consistency of my "boneless wings." They're many places downtown that have better wings but those wings are also more expensive. So basically you're getting what you pay for. Tried the boneless wings as I'm not big on conventional ones. First off - price. Not exactly cheap. 16 bucks for 1.5 pounds which was enough to feed my girlfriend and myself, but not much left. The boneless wings are basically chicken tenders with a crunch and taste almost akin to fried chicken skin on them. interesting. Tried two flavors: canyon signature medium and general tso's. Canyon signature was extremely odd, almost Cajun like. Couldn't quite place the flavor but it seemed familiar, but strange at the same time. Pros: Local and convenient (Walking distance from many fraternities and apartments so I usually don't order out). Good price ($6 for a dozen, $19 for a 40 bucket). Cons: Can take a while during peak hours for delivery but every other place will too. Some flavors are good others are so-so. Comments: I can call in an order from my house when I'm stepping out the door, and after an 8-10 minute walk I usually only have to wait a couple more minutes if that. I usually get superb service from Canyon wings but i guess tonight's staff didn't feel like working. I went in for my usual lemon pepper wings with butter garlic. Immediately the cashier responds it only comes with 1 sauce i can clearly read but i usually pay for an up charge and get BOTH! She proceeds to tell me that's not possible when that's been my exact order for the past year. Canyon Wings... Overall not so great. The Boneless wings are down right disgusting. Ok I agree Zen's is worse but Canyon sure does compete for that last place spot. The breading is terrible. It has no taste, no crisp, no consistency. Its like giant chicken nuggets but worse. They are obviously a lower quality chicken because man are they rock solid... I ordered 4 kinds of flavors and hand over heart, I could not get through the 3rd piece. I almost lost my dinner. It was truly a sobering experience. The boned wings are small. I mean small. But they really aren't that bad. Wing's Over is certainly better but the only reason is their sauce. I might get these again. Maybe.. The sauce sucks guys. I mean down right sucks. I've had Canyon Wings a few times, and every time, my complaints have been the same : I don't like their breading, and they give way too much sauce. I'm not a big fan of their BBQ flavors, and the breading doesn't have much flavor. They don't have awful wings, though and when you walk-in order, you get the food pretty quickly. Finally a place that does softies (boneless wings) that are NOT the portion of chicken nuggets! I thought 1/2lb of softies, fries and a soda for $7.50 was a good deal. I tried the hot teriyaki sauce and my order arrived with some sauce in the container which was great for dipping (the softies and sauce were wrapped in tin foil so the sauce didn't leak on the fries). Although the wings are delicious I cannot recommend canyon wings to others due to their extremely poor customer service. I honestly cannot remember the last time someone was so rude to me. The delivery driver did not greet me when I opened the door and the first words out of his mouth were, "would you like to leave a tip?" in a very rude and curt tone. I had left a tip already and although it is not as big as a usually leave, I thought it was an appropriate amount because the place is so close to my house and I tried to explain this to him. He responded in an even ruder manner, bringing up his personal struggles and family life into the situation. I can completely understand having a bad day and being frustrated with a customer, because I have worked food service for many years, but you do not verbally attack a customer nor make them feel uncomfortable in any way. I called Canyon Wings to alert them of this poor customer service in hopes that they might find a way to improve on it. I was treated as a belligerent customer by the girl who answered the phone, and when the delivery driver himself got on the line he said, "sweetheart, you got your food fast and hot, you need to stop harassing us" and hung up the phone. When I called back to ask for a manager and the delivery guy obviously recognized my voice, he hung up on me again. I was so completely upset by this obvious disrespect I came in to Canyon Wings, with the unopened bag of food, and told them I did not want it and no I do not want a refund, I merely want them to understand the gravity of the situation of having extremely poor customer service and to have them make me feel that the situation would be resolved. Having worked in the hospitality industry for many years, I have taught many employees proper customer service strategies. The girl at the counter had obviously already heard about me from the delivery driver and showed outward signs of hostility in her tone, body language, and tightly forced smile. I wanted to know that something would be done to improve customer service because I was literally so upset I lost my appetite and brought back the food AND did not even want a refund. I kept trying to get the employees to see how a person might interpret their customer service as being poor by their rude and hostile behavior. They made various excuses and took my suggestions as harassment or insults and the situation only got worse and worse as they continued to get ruder and ruder, continually attacking me verbally and treating me like a crazy person, even suggesting that I was drunk. I was absolutely astounded by this utter lack of care for customer service, because after all, I am "only one order." I just want to make you guys aware of how the staff handles customer service concerns. Although I should have shrugged off the rudeness of the delivery driver and continued studying and ate my delicious wings, I could not stand for such treatment and obvious disrespect. The driver had interpreted me as being "snippy" even though I was clearly just explaining the situation, which is why I can understand his escalation of rudeness on a personal level, but on a professional level I cannot condone his behavior nor that of the other staff members at Canyon that I encountered that night. Even when you believe that a customer is being rude, you do not respond in kind nor do you bring your personal life into work situations. It is customer 101. So, I order wings through grubhub and an hour and a half goes by and they still aren't here, so I call the restaurant and try to see if the order is on its way or why the wings haven't been delivered yet, the guy tries to tell me the driver called me and I didn't pick up (but i recieved no phone calls) so he left. I told the man on the phone that I did not recieve any phone calls and he basically tells me that im lying and he doesn't believe me then proceeds to hang up the phone without saying goodbye. So I call once more and this time I am livid I wanted to talk to the manager and he tells me I can't then screams at me telling me they are too busy and if I call again he will be calling the police for harrassment. The wings themselves are not bad although a little fatty. Our major problem with Canyon Wings is that it took OVER 2 HOURS to get our wings delivered. This was at 7 pm on a Sunday night so it was not peak hours. We ordered on-line and after waiting 45 minutes, we called for the 1st time. We were told the wings were on the way but 15 minutes later...still no wings. We called again and were told that they left the restaurant and once the wings are with the drivers, there is nothing they can do. After 1 1/2, I called AGAIN. The guy who answered this phone was nicer and apologized but still could not tell us when our order would be delivered. My husband still really wanted the wings and so we didn't cancel. At the 2 hour mark, we finally said screw it and called to cancel. The girl who answered was very rude, made excuses, and wouldn't give me the name of a manager or store owner because she said that he "would not be interested in talking to me." I said that I would think he would be interested that we were planning our friends and family about our bad experience but she told me that "I was just one order" so obviously, our business not returning was no big deal. Went there in person at 6:30 pm on a Friday. They had an illuminated OPEN sign, the lights were on, and their website says they open at 5 pm, so I tried the door. It was locked, and there was nobody inside, so I assumed that they had stepped out or gone to the restroom or something. After waiting for about ten minutes, a man exited an adjacent building and entered the side door, the one going directly to the kitchen. Evidently they hadn't locked that one. He proceeded to cook something, not unlocking the customer door even though he had walked right by me. He finished cooking in about five minutes, packaged whatever it was, and left again, back into the same adjacent building. He ignored me on his way over there, and on his way back, and after ten more minutes of waiting he started whistling and pointedly not unlocking the customer door. Three Strikes: went to get some wings late night on Sunday and was very disappointed. Strike 1 goes to management. Only 2 people working including the delivery driver so essentially 1 person working late night On a holiday weekend. Strike 2 goes to the worker. I watched him use wings that had been sitting out to fill my order instead of using the wings he just pulled from the fryer--I was there 15 minutes, my wings were sitting for a while. Strike 3 and most offensive goes to ownership on the process of making wings. I watched multiple orders go out with naked wings from the fryer placed in to-go containers and then squirted with sauce on top like chocolate syrup on a sundae. Where's the mixing bowl? What happened tossing the wings in sauce--not squirting on top? And I watched "rubs" being shaken on top like salt on French fries. It can't be a "rub" if 90% of the wing doesn't have any seasoning.
