Food here is very below average and don't try to substitute or add anything. Its the chefs way or the highway. I tried changing the type of cheese on the cheesesteak becasue I don't care for whiz. They flat out refused and offered no explaination. I said ok I'll take the chicken sandwich and add cheese and onions. No sir, there is no adding or substituting. That being said, the server was good and apologized but said the kitchen manager didn't allow any changes. Ended up ordering a few additional appetizers instead. The onion rings were edible and a 4/10, I would have ranked them higher if they were remotely crispy at all. They were not, they were warm with no crunch at all. I've seen other reviews stating their disappointment in the food selection. I think people forget that this place is a brewery that serves food first and foremost. This was our second time here. This time was during graduation weekend, and fortunately, we had no problem getting seating without a reservation (definitely recommended during game or graduation weekends). I prefer seating in the upstairs barn area over the basement, which is a little darker. But it's a nice, big place with a lot of seating. Nicely decorated, and a great place for pub grub and good homemade beer, and this is coming from a beer aficionado. They have nice options for beers, in addition to mixed drinks and wine for the non beer drinkers. I've been very happy with the food. The short rib grilled cheese is great! Our service was great, although we saw one grump worker while we were there the last time we were there who was clearly over stressed by the graduation weekend and was being a little too confrontational with minor issues. Our server was awesome though. Parking is a bit tight, but they have spots out front and in the back which seems to be sufficient. It's a good value, and they have something for everyone. Today me and my family went here for drinks and appetizers. We got the nachos and the bacon, broccoli and cheese snack as well when we went the lower floor was closed, but the upstairs was still open so we could still go in. The service is very good and it wasn't overly crowded. Both the nachos and the broccoli snack were delicious. The only thing I could complain about is how the nachos were served they used to be served on a tray and now they were more stacked on top of each other. They used to just be more evenly topped with toppings. I wish that they would still have the original way that they would be served. I still would love to come back and get either of these appetizers and would suggest to anyone in town to consider this restaurant for drinks and appetizers if they are visiting State College. read more

I rarely leave a bad review but this time it's necessary. 1- I ordered a hazy IPA. What I received clearly tasted like a wheat beer, not anything like an IPA. When I questioned if it was correct, the waitress asked the bartender and rather than pouring a small amount of the hazy IPA to compare with what I was drinking, I was told " it's a hazy so it should taste like wheat". HVB was such a good experience! My work group of 15* guys went here for dinner and the ladies that served us did a phenomenal job. No issues and they were super kind and friendly. Love this place and food! However, just recently found out about a manager there named Lisa who is just a miserable person. The way she treats her staff is despicable. She calls her staff out in front of customers and it is so belittling and I can't imagine how they must feel. I can only imagine how she must be behind doors. There's even outside seating. Parking lot almost completely full on a Friday night at 6:15. This place is super cool and right off the interstate. We hit it up on our way through PA. We just happen to hit it about dinner time. They had two IPA's, a DIPA and a porter. Then some other beers we didn't care about!Kolsch, Pilsner, etc. they also have a slew of cocktails and wine. The food is really good as well. Last year and this we for the salmon BLT (it had really crispy bacon on it that just "made" the sandwich) and the fried chicken tenderloins. Those were a tad doughy. I think I would've liked them a bit more crispy. The hot sauce was great and I got blue cheese on the side (I'm from Buffalo, after all). Fries came nice and crispy. read more

We were a large party of 26 with reservations. After ordering at the same time, half the party received their food and finished eating, while the other half had not even received their food. when we asked about the delay since several tables that arrived after us had received their food and already paid and left, the manager Lisa was very short and rude, then told us we needed to be aware they were busy. It was another hour after the first half of our party finished, before the rest of our party got food. Much of our party were little kids who were hungry. when we asked if they could bring out the food that was ready, Lisa refused saying it would all be brought out once it was all ready, no exceptions. Delicious early dinner with great service in an incredibly comfortable space. Our party of 4 was seated quickly. My kids split the soft pretzel app and my wife and I shared crab hush puppies. For dinner the kids had the kids burger with fries and kids chicken tenders with fresh chips. Both loved it. My wife had the Valentines weekend strawberry spinach salad with feta and short rib nachos. Delicious again! I had fish and chips with a side of pickled vegetables. They were all awesome! The fish was 3 large pieces of barramundi battered and perfectly fried with horseradish remoulade. The fries are thin and perfectly salty. The pickled veggies side is a bargain at $3 and super tasty. I guess that's to be expected but we went to sit & eat & talk so this was not the night for that. We had the short rib nachos, the grilled wings, and burgers.
