After seeing Cao Bakery all over social media promoting their sandwiches, I decided to check it out. Ended up ordering a full breakfast and honestly, it was a huge letdown. The scrambled eggs were bland with no flavor, the bacon tasted low quality, and the fries were overly greasy. I also tried the sandwich they were promoting their version of a pan con bistec with churrasco and it was straight up not edible. The bread was dry, the steak was extremely chewy and had zero flavor, and they barely put any meat in it, maybe 4 small pieces total. For a $16 sandwich, that's unacceptable. This bakery has so many delicious goodies. Oh my! The cortadito was tiny but mighty. The pastelito de carne with ham and cheese: YUM. And the mini empanada colombiana with spicy sauce on top was just perfect. It was nice out so we sat outside on the patio. The service at the counter inside is ok but be prepared to wait in line. Cortadito was bitter and dark, I assumed they gave me a colada in error. Ham croquettes are frozen Catalina which is pretty sad considering they claim to be a Cuban bakery " the Cuban Starbucks" Preparatito was the best out of the 3 and that was also sour. But all in all, the staff is still earning minimum wage and the Cuban sandwich was packed with meat, so no complains except maybe a bruised ego. I got some pastelitos, which are very photogenic and look amazing, but are not that much different than average pastelitos. I was hoping for an amazing experience, but my flight never took off. It's OK, I have had bad food and CAO is far from bad food. The pastelitos were good, the sandwich was also good and packed, and the coffee I got was also really good. This particular location has outdoor (covered) seating. I came to this bakery on a Sunday, around 3:15 pm. I got a number from the red dispenser that is right by the door. I was annoyed that my number was skipped and another party after me was served before me. Anyways, after I finally had someone help me, I ended up getting: Chicken empanada ($2 tax included)- This was rather dry and disappointing. Chicken croquette ($0.95 tax included)- Small but tasted okay. Slice of custard cake ($2.80 tax included)- Tasted like flan, in cake form. Great dessert. Guava & Cream Cheese Pastelitos- Free with Yelp check in. A pretty good guava and cream cheese pastry. Better than one that I have had back home (Porto's Bakery in various places in Los Angeles & Orange County). Not overly sweet, great combination of the sweet guava and cream cheese. ------------------------- (Total= $5.75) It was definitely frustrating in trying to order and redeem my Yelp check in because most of the employees do not speak English (also annoyed me that my number was skipped and just assumed I was just standing around not wanting to order anything but still had a number....). I went in to get a quick coffee and a bite to eat to go. Someone greeted me right away. It was an older lady. I forgot to get her name :(. She was super sweet and attentive. While she was getting my items ready another employee distracted her and she apologized for the delay, which I thought was nice. I told her that it was fine and not to worry about it. She said I was "amable" lol, which in Spanish means that I'm very polite. Ha ha I ordered a "cangrejito" and a "cortadito". Cangrejito is a Cuban pastry literally shaped like a little crab. It's filled with mashed up ham. It's delicious. Cortadito is like a mini Cafe con leche, with equal parts of milk and espresso. Yummm. Hard to stay away from Cuban pastries. It's a weakness lol. I came by CAO (Cuban American Original) which seems to be the new name for Vicky Bakery a few weeks ago. It's the same bakery, same family ownership, new name. The owner now just named it after the family (CAO is the last name and they were crafty and made it into an acronym for Cuban American Original). I came because I was in the area and I had been having a conversation with someone who will go unnamed (Marilu :p) who was getting me hungry by talking/enticing me about croquettes (ironically she went into a bakery in her area more or less same time I was here). So I came to get some croquettes (one of the foods I have a great weakness for). First off, the parking is a little difficult. This place seemed to be constantly filling up and finding parking is a bit of a chore. I parked in a little shopping center next to it which since it was a Sunday the businesses were mostly closed in order to avoid the drama. The line was unbelievably long... not sure if it's like this normally but I waited over 45 minutes to be served. Please understand that it's not the fault of the employees... every single one of them was hustling... and they have quite a bit of employees... but there was just so many people, they were overwhelmed. Eventually I ordered food and I got 4 croquettes, Cuban toast, cafe con leche, a pastelito and a small piece of cake. Yes! Delicious! Amazing! The croquettes themselves were worth the wait! The cafe con leche was satisfying and cmon what's better than dipping some Cuban toast in some of the liquid goodness and eating it.... yum!!!!!! The pastelito and cake were good... now don't my lack of adjectives for these last two pieces as saying they weren't... I just love cafe con leche, Cuban toast and croquettes and just believe very few things can compare to them. Taking about cake, while I was waiting I watched a family come and pick up a birthday cake for their daughter. It was a very cute unicorn cake. I like the fact that they have a system where u need to grab a number when u walk in- it stops the "i was here first" and line skipper hassles. This place also does some of the best tequeños i've have. Their coffee is pretty decent- not a fan of the pan tostado though, its pretty flaky. It does take a really long time, seems like they never have enough workers. That being said, if you are only there for a quick coffee, you can skip the line and go straight to the window area, where they'll take your order- but no bakery goods! Parking is always a huge hassle- beware.
