After my Terry Blacks experience in Austin I yearn to go back for another go at that place. I don't have business, friends or family there so needless to say I haven't been back. One day I drove past Capello's on my taco feast in RC. Took family here the next weekend and boy am I glad real Texas BBQ is close to home. All the other bbq places around the Bay Area tastes off. This place would get a *6 stars* if they had SLICED WHITE BREAD. The yellow sauce is my favorite. Ordered one of each meat to try; but my favorite is still the Dino ribs. I've been to Capelo's twice now for lunch, spaced out by a good amount of time -- at least a year between visits. I like the restaurant setup: a mix of indoor and covered outdoor seating that feels open and inviting. The food, for me, has been mixed. On my first visit I had the brisket and remember it being very fatty -- not my thing, though I know preferences vary on that. This time I went with the chicken sandwich, which I really liked, along with the coleslaw, which was also very good. My biggest complaint is the price. Two sandwiches with coleslaw came to $50 before tip. Factor in the now-standard 18% "guilt tip" (for what's essentially counter service, with food brought out to your table), and you're looking at roughly $30 each for a sandwich and a small side. I've been two Capelo's twice and had two very different experiences. The first time, I got a 1 meat platter with brisket and mac n cheese. The brisket was some of the best I've had in the Bay Area while the mac n cheese was super creamy. That visit was 5 stars but that was back in 2024. This latest experience was some of the worst brisket I've had in the Bay Area and would be rated 2 stars. The brisket was dry, chewy, and sliced in the wrong direction (with the grain instead of against the grain). I also tried the pork ribs - meh and the Dino ribs - tender but very fatty instead of juicy and seasoning seemed to be just salt - a lot of salt. The sides of brussels and kale slaw were also just fine. There was way too much vinegar on the kale slaw. There was live music but the music was so loud we couldn't hear each other talk much less think and we were sitting pretty far away. While I enjoy live music, it would be great if there were parts of the restaurant that was quieter for those looking to talk to their friends or who don't enjoy the specific band that evening. Weekends are for Beef Ribs from Capelo's BBQ for us! We brought our friend Helen. She has flown to Texas and spent the night just to pick up BBQ from some of the well known BBQ Joints. I always order the three-bone special and have never been disappointed. I'm also a fan of the Creamed Corn and my wife loves the Cilantro Peanut Slaw. This time we also ordered a rack of Pork Ribs and Brussel Sprouts. This was to eat in. Helen also ordered Juicy Brisket, Pork Ribs and a Beef Rib to take home for lunch throughout the week. They went in to order while I walked the dog across the front of the restaurant. Princess and I entered, sat down and within five minutes, our order was served, even before my wife and Helen came to the table with their drinks. Beef Rib - 5 - I was told to parcel out the beef so I showed off by grabbing the bone, lifting it slightly and shaking. Of course, the meat slid right off of the bone. We ate the rib from the end first. It had the most crust, was super meaty and fatty at the same time. Perfection! Pork Ribs - 5 - These ribs were super tender and meaty. I love eating ribs without adding sauce so I can taste the rub and the meat. Creamed Corn - 4 - This batch seemed to be a bit starchy. Getting later in the corn season. Cilantro Peanut Slaw - 5 - She ate nearly 1/2 of the large container at lunch. No need to say more. Brussel Sprouts - 2 - I haven't tried these yet but both women said that these were extremely salty. The woman who was overseeing the dining area is tops in our book. We've seen here before. She is excellent in trying to ensure that every guest has everything they need to enjoy their meal including plates, flatware, napkins and then lids and take-out containers for leftovers. Never order white meat from a BBQ place; I can almost guarantee it'll be caca. * Loved the complimentary pickles and pickled onions. * Jalapeño-Cheese Sausage was outstanding, as well; juicy and great flavor. * Weekend special Dino Bone (beef rib) was spectacular! Smoky, beefy, and provided me with a ton of leftovers. I think I turned it into three meals. If you're there on a Sat or Sun, be sure to get one of these bad boys! The Meh: * Brisket had a nice simple rub and good smoke, but it was a bit dry. It almost seemed like it was a holdover from the previous day. * Cilantro Peanut Slaw was just OK. Armadillo Willy's version is much, much better. * Hot Links were just OK and most likely Evergood®. The Ugly: * Parking might be difficult as they do have a small private lot (±15 spots) and there is street parking available, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it. Capelo's Barbeque was OK. I definitely have had better, but it wasn't terrible. They do have live music and I like that they provide pickled ingredients and sauces for you to freely grab. I ordered the 3 Meat Plate and got brisket, hot links, and pork ribs with 2 sides of corn bread and mac and cheese. My favorite protein was probably the hot links which in itself, kind of says a lot. I liked the brisket texture, but thought it could have used more flavor. Best believe I vigorously dunked everything in the sauces. The mac and cheese came out lukewarm and also could have used a touch more of salt as well. The corn bread though, was nice and moist. Additionally, it seemed like the meat quantities were not consistent and in congruence with the amount that you order -- my husband and I ordered 3 meats while the rest of the table ordered between 1 and 2, and it seemed as though the others got more meat than we did in total. Such a great meal. We were deliriously happy walking out of there. We had the dino beef ribs $94, mini family pack $81- 2x brisket and pork ribs, kale slaw, brussel spouts, potato salad and a Caesar salad $12. Capelo's was full at 12pm on a Sunday. The dino beef ribs were delicious. That smokey BBQ flavor is the result of at least six hours of smoking. It literately was falling off the bone. The meat was really juicy this time around. My preference is still adding some BBQ sauces like mustard, sweet tangy sauce or the hot BBQ sauce after the initial few bites to mix it up. Good job my friends at Capelo's BBQ. Service Grade: A I went with the 3 meat plate that comes with 2 sides. I ordered the pork ribs, brisket, and hot links for the meats. I asked for brussel sprouts and creamed corn as my sides. Overall, the food was all very tasty. The meats could have been a much warmer temperature. I felt like it was not just pulled out of the smoker. This could have been the time of day I was there so I will give them another chance. The creamed corn was my favorite. It was piping hot even after 10 minutes and had a great creaminess to it. The brisket and hot links were my two favorite meats. Grade: B+ I tried all four sauces. My favorite blend was the Diablo sauce mixed with the Sweet sauce. My boyfriend had been wanting to check out this barbecue spot for some time now, and I'm so glad we finally did! Even though I live in town, it was a new discovery for me. He went for the brisket with a side of mac and cheese, while I opted for the ribs and creamed corn. Everything was delicious, and as a bonus, we got complimentary cornbread since it was our first visit. The staff were all super friendly, which made the experience even better. The atmosphere here is really cool. It's an open-air restaurant with fans to keep things comfortable, plus an open bar. They have this amazing sauce station with a bunch of options, from honey mustard and spicy BBQ to sweeter choices, along with pickles and jalapeños. We grabbed some beers from the tap. I stuck with my usual lagers. There are huge TVs both outside and by the bar, making it a great spot to catch a game or just relax. The only slight hiccup was that we arrived a bit late, around 7 PM on a Thursday, with closing at 8 PM. One staff member was cleaning up near our table and seemed a little eager for us to leave, making some noise while we were finishing up. We were already getting ready to go, so it was just a minor thing. But honestly, that was the only downside; everyone else was lovely. We both got the barbecue bowls, which include one meat and one side, and two of them came to $38. They call them "small," but we found the portions to be really generous! Look I've had a ton of barbecue and nothing can top Terry Blacks in Dallas. But in the Bay Area? Capelo's is my new GOAT. They got a super tender smokey brisket which can be ordered by the pound or you can order a plate combo. I got the 1 meat and 2 sides combo with mac n cheese and creamed corn on the side. Good portions on meat and sides, in addition to 3 types of bbq sauce. They got a nice outdoor seating area with picnic tables and a country vibe. While we watched a man pull apart lovely looking meat in back. I couldn't stop at brisket tacos, I also ordered Mac and cheese and a peach cheesecake pie slice! My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach! You get two tacos, on the most amazing tasting, fluffy flour tortillas. The meat is piled high! I got full off the pile of meat before I got to my tacos. I'm not a big meat person, so when I say the brisket was out of this world I mean it. With the exception of the big painted Texas flag on the wall and the cartoonish sponge cowboy hat, the place has nothing to do with Texas, especially the BBQ. The good news: The free sliced pickles and pickled onions, mild bbq sauce and the spicy runny bbq sauces are great! The OK news: The creamy cal slaw is fresh and crunchy (not creamy) and the Brussels sprout is crispy and nice (not very Texan as the name gives it away). The "smoked beans" are more like the English Heinz beans, a la beans on toast, in a thick sauce with an extremely faint smoke taste (you have to close your eye and let your imagination wonder). The not so good news: 1.5lb of brisket has no smoky bbq taste, zero smoke rings. It was not tender and was cooked in a hurry. Half a rack of ribs, zero bbq taste. Half a chicken, zero bbq taste, just cooked with uneven brushes of light smudges of bbq sauce slapped on it for color. The half chicken was missing the thigh (my favorite meat) , the gentleman said that they ran out of them so he put yet another large quarter clonk of breast meat. Managed to finish a wing and a bit of a quarter. Having been going to Austin every year for the last 13 years for the F1 race in October and having had true Texan bbq at the Salt Lick in Driftwood and Terry Black and Franklin, I can honestly say the we were quite disappointed, regardless of the fact the the meal cost $160. Capelo's Barbecue gets around the bay, and it is quite a delicious, clean, and consistent barbecue from a Central Texan native! The prices are very reasonable for the meats, and they have a variety of limitless sauces you can grab. The only negative is that the sides can be better, but that's fine - totally into going pure meat for them! We typically get the 3 meat plates because it's a great value and can feed two. I sometimes can even share one with my parents. All their meats taste equally good. Our favorites are the beef brisket and pork ribs, but their pulled pork and smoked chicken are very moist, tender, and flavorful as well. We sometimes get a hot link on the side, as it's smooth with a good snap and spice. You can request it to be sliced. The grilled chicken breasts are not as tender as the other meats, but still has a good barbecue flavor - I imagine you'd get this if you need to eat lean. For sides, the mac & cheese, baked beans, and corn muffin are our favorites. The mac has a chunky and thick Velveeta-like coating, the beans have a strongly sweet and smoky robust flavor, and the corn muffin has a soft texture. The slaws are more vinegary, and the other sides are something you'd expect from your local grocer's prepared food section. Another thing that Capelo's Barbecue does well are the sauces - they have four types that escalate in heat. They all have very different flavor profiles and are on the sweet and tangy side, but I like them all. Their spiciest sauce is not that bad and does have some natural sweetness, but you should have water ready anyways because it's the spice that slowly grows on your tongue. The employees are extremely nice and efficient, both from the food truck and brick and mortar in Redwood City. One day when we came in for a pickup order, they were celebrating an employee's birthday and offered everyone a slice of cake! I wouldn't be surprised if I went to the South and had better BBQ, but we're in Northern California so I'll note Capelo's as amongst the best I've had in the bay (I've tried a lot of them). It seems they sporadically have live music at their dine-in location (which closes late for a barbecue place), so I hope to join them sometime in the summer for that! Carpelo's BBQ is a solid 3 stars. Overall, everything was decent, but nothing really stood out or wowed me. We ordered a mix of meats and sides. The ribs were a bit of a letdown--they were too burnt in some areas and had quite a few overly fatty parts. For our group of 4 adults we ordered the rack of Beef Dino Ribs plus the large Family Pack (1lb of each meat) Brisket, Pork ribs, chicken. Plus smoked sausage. Sides: potato salad, mac&cheese, Brussel sprouts. Corn bread. Peach cobbler cheesecake, Banana Pudding. Wow !! A lot of food , i wanted enough to take home for Lunch the next day. We placed our order at the counter, then worked our way to the dining area. Food arrived at our table before i was done collecting the sauces, plates, napkins & silverware. Very fast - amazing as the dinning area was nearly full. The Dino bones ( 3 big ribs) was very impressive. Perfectly done. Definitely my favorite. Juices still dripping, very moist. Pork ribs were good. St. Louis cut, so they were a little on the drier side than babybacks. We asked for dark meat on the chicken but received two pieces of breast ( a bit on the dry side). Brisket was perfect, very moist and tender. Smoked sausage was a favorite especially with the Texas sauce. Sauces are the secret for good BBQ ,, as long as the meats are moist. We were with a Good group and out to celebrate a happy event. Everything was good. Desserts were packed to take home. Good service, even the cleanup staff were friendly. Atmosphere was typical w/ televisions entertainment. Noise level was decent to have table conversations. Every single one was dry, but the smoked chicken deserves a special award. The skin had the texture of sandpaper, the meat was flavorless, and I was questioning whether it had ever met a smoker. The brisket was so dry I had to wrestle it just to cut it into pieces. Tender? Not even close. The ribs had a little BBQ flavor, but the meat was slightly fatty and again, there was barely any smoke flavor. The sides didn't save the day either. The baked beans were cooked okay, but the sauce was just sweet with a tad pepper taste. The mac & cheese had a gooey texture and a hint of garlic, but it wasn't very cheesy. The Hot Link Dog was unbelievably basic. The hot link was seriously lacking in flavor, topped with nothing more than ketchup and mustard. Honestly, the Evergood hot links from Costco taste better--and cost a lot less. We tried all the BBQ sauces hoping for a miracle. The sauce counters they have is three different area. Now the food, my favorite is the three items plates. Very good brisket that just moist and tender. My go to is their chicken and Louisiana sausage with brisket or ribs. Juicy and their sides like baked beans and Brussels sprouts is fantastic! Corn bread is to die for. So glad I live close by. Definitely must try for bbq lovers! Located in the industrial area. They have a nice outdoor seating. Bar area has couple tvs. That leads to open space to another outdoor area with tables and chairs. Staff were attentive and helpful. The brisket was for me and man I could have kept eating but had to stop myself. It was nice, tender and juicy My man loved both the ribs and brisket! Great service and amazing food. The eating area is clean, fun, and loud with live music. Wouldn't mind if they turned down the volume a teeny bit. So many sides to choose from! Enjoyed the cornbread, it was worth getting for me. The brisket was my favorite by far, though we also got the chicken and ribs, which were okay. Loved the Mac and cheese, and the crispy brussel sprouts and coleslaw were good too. The creamed corn is very creamy and thick, a little more than I'm used to. Loves the vibes over here. Food was great. The staff were friendly and helpful. Beer was fun. We went on a Friday early evening. There was a DJ playing fun, disco-esc music. We ordered the family meal - ribs, chicken, and brisket. We ordered Mac n cheese, Brussels sprouts, and potato salad. The meat was tender. We ordered a bit too much for a family of 4, but still yummy to eat after wards. We will definitely come back when we crave southern bbq and a good time. read more

Excellent taste of Texas BBQ. We came on a Saturday in August near dinner time. The food was so good that I forgot to post in Yelp. Parking was difficult as their small lot was full. There was outside street parking around the restaurant, warehouse and train area. But go early before those spaces are gone! Other than that this reminded me of my time in Austin, Texas. And I can see the Texas influence here. Redwood City perfect to be that Texas outdoor eating as the warm summer heat warms you with live music . Or you can eat in at the small inside area by the bar. My friends got 2 meat combo with 2 sides. I decided to splurge to get a beef rib that was pretty pricy, but they were sold out and instead they replaced it with pork ribs! Wow! That's a lot! All the different sides we got were all good we agreed on. I said although the meat is tender, it just can't beat the cattle down in Texas where the meat will fall of the bone like magic. Texas got their longhorn cattle for a reason and yummy they are! Moo! moo! Overall it's an excellent experience and I would love to go back. I believe my first experience with Capelo was a black food truck in one of the events in San Francisco maybe it was Presidio tops? Other than that they are yummy good . Two thumbs up! I had to get takeout box to bring rest home for dinner number 2. lol Yummy in my tummy! Yes I would need to come back earlier to get the beef rib eventhough it's expensive, but I want to relive my Texas trip. I would say this is easily one of the top three barbecue spots in the Bay Area. I got their three-meat combo: ribs, cheddar jalapeño sausage, and brisket, with cream of corn and mac & cheese on the side. The ribs were super flavorful, tender, and fell right off the bone. The sausage was really good--great flavor, not too spicy, just a nice little kick. The brisket was super tender, fatty, and packed with flavor. The mac & cheese was amazing: super cheesy, thick, creamy, and full of flavor. The cream of corn was solid--not a ton of flavor, but still a good side. I definitely want to come back and try the beef ribs, which I've heard sells out really fast. I tried to get them this time but they were already gone, so you definitely need to go early if you want those. One thing I really like about this place is there an all-you-can-eat pickles and pickled red onions. They also have homemade barbecue sauces that are really good--the spicy one and the sweet one are my favorites. Overall, I'd highly recommend this place for the flavor, quality, and tenderness of the meats. The only downside is the portion sizes are on the smaller side, but the prices are okay. Ambiance is nice, mostly outdoor seating, and I think on weekends they have a band that plays, which is a cool touch. Service was good and everyone was nice, but parking is limited and the area isn't the greatest. read more

I had some friends absolutely RAVE about Capelo's, and I've somehow never heard of it before then! So I knew I had to go check it out. I got the 2 meat plate with brisket and sausage, and sides of Mac n cheese and beans. My favorites were the sausage and the Mac n cheese. The sausage was very unique--absolutely loaded with cheese which made it really good. It was however very greasy and heavy, so if you don't like that I wouldn't recommend it. But it was great to me. The mac n cheese was very gooey and tasty as well. The beans were good. The brisket was just okay in my opinion, nothing to really write home about personally. A bit dry. I also got a slice of the peach cobbler cheesecake which was delicious as well. Loved the graham cracker crust, and the cheesecake was very rich without being overly heavy. We went on a Sunday and they had plenty of TV's playing football, which make it a great spot to watch games as well. All in all, some of the best barbecue I've had in the Bay though, so I would definitely come back. read more

Brisket sandwich 5/5 well balanced, not as heavy Brisket - best in Bay Area 5/5, they give both fatty and leaner cuts Ribs - very tender 5/5 Mac - 3.5/5 I thought it was just okay, but the rest of my table really enjoyed it Potato salad - 2/5 everyone sampled it then didn't touch it again Corn muffins - 4/5 Kansas City sauce (sweet and tangy) was my favorite, but I know I like sweet and tangy sauces. Top Tier! We're visiting from SoCal and my hubs wanted BBQ, this place came up. They offered a great outdoor seating patio that was clean and spacious which is good because we have a pup. The reviews were great so we decided to give it a try. The food is amazing, my brisket was tender and went perfect with all of their bbq especially the spicy one! My hubs LOVED their sausage and ribs. The best part about this place is the service, all of the workers were so nice, not just to me but to my puppy, offering her a little bit of chicken.
