When I use bike share, I always choose Capital Bikeshare. The bikes are consistently in great condition, fully charged, and easy to find. The team that maintains them does an incredible job keeping them running day after day. Their dedication goes beyond just working on bikes. Last week, while I was driving home from work, I got a flat tire near their workshop. Even though it was the end of the day, they changed my tire in about 10 minutes. Original Review: I rented a bike that didn't properly dock at the end of my ride. As a first time user and a tourist, I didn't have any experience with renting a bike. I had no idea it wasn't docked correctly. I pulled on it, and it was locked in place, so I assumed I was good. However, I noticed a notification through the app the next morning that said the timer on my ride was still running. I called customer service, and even after I called, the timer kept running. I was charged $24 for a two hour ride. Customer service would not work with me at all. I do not recommend renting a bike through this company unless you are with someone experienced. Some of their kiosks weren't working at all, and it was my word against theirs that I even docked the bike. No way I could win that one. Terrible experience with customer service! Using Capital Bikeshare can be a frustrating experience. I have had particular problems with the kiosk at North Capitol & G Place in NW DC. The kiosk often isn't functioning properly. Today, for instance, I initiated a rental from the kiosk, was given an unlock code, and the CODE DIDN'T WORK on any of the bikes at the kiosk. Later, I got a text saying I was being charged $36.85 for not terminating the ride properly. A ride I was never able to take. Then I had to spend 10 minutes on the phone with their customer service to get a refund. The refund will take 7-8 BUSINESS DAYS to process. Other times, I have not been able to successfully re-dock the bike at this kiosk. Every time it requires a tedious conversation with customer service to resolve. I am DONE with Capital Bikeshare. It's not worth the wasted and time and frustration. read more

I analyzed Capital Bikeshare before I signed up. I'm frugal. I decided to pay for the subscription. I just renewed. Here is my thinking. I live elsewhere. But I visit the DC area often, at least every month, to check on my elderly father. I usually take the train back and forth. I sometimes fly. I like to exercise. To get from upper NW to Union Station (or to Metro Center), I could just buy rides on an a la carte basis. But I am using the service about three times per month, the e-bike. The alternative means of travel is Uber. The savings are about $36 on the undocking and about $54 given the typical ride duration, so it is approximately break even. My review may offer you information for your own decision making even if you choose to forego the subscription in favor of the a la carte alternative. The system is extensive. I never have difficulty finding a dock given the destinations I frequent. Where I stay, there is a dock about a quarter mile away, and another another two minutes walk from there. At Union Station, there is a lengthy one just to the side; at Metro Station, across the street. Here is the aspect that is less positive. Bikes are often broken. I'd estimate half of bikes I try have a problem, ranging from being marked as available on the app but showing a red light in reality to not releasing from the dock to sticky handlebar grips to sudden failure while underway. I can put this into perspective, however, based on experience in two other major markets, San Francisco and New York City: this company is probably no better and no worse than its counterparts and competitors. It's the nature of this business. The vehicles sit outside exposed to the elements, are used by dozens of indifferent folk myself included, and have to be priced at a point that likely allows to not the best profit margin. To conclude, I will add that the ride is often the best part of my day. I am generally riding in the 4am time range, about 7-8 miles, I have concluded this is among the riskier activities I engage in. You have to be careful, and, even then, there is so much beyond control. Of everything to factor in, it is important to note urban cycling is not for everyone. I sometimes see families out there, and I wonder, because there are children who may be accustomed to safer environments in their suburban homes, in traffic that would give me pause. Two kiosks were broken. When you call for assistance, you get offshore help. They will identify you, verify your payment method, then NOT issue you a code so you can ride, even if you have a full day pass, as I did. Why even bother identifying me if you can't/won't help me? Only option? Walk to another kiosk, hope it works, and do the process all over again. The transportation is unreliable. We were late to two tours because we couldn't get a bike. Reference number 228701007 My family was in town visiting dc and we wanted to see the monuments and the tidal basin. We had heard the best way to do this in the summer was to bike. We got our bikes from the spot near the middle of the Smithsonian mall, paid for the day pass, and went on our ride. The bike had difficult to adjust gear setting that didn't really impact the bike. My sister had a bike where the lever to adjust the seat didn't work and it left her leg rub raw. However, the worst problem was when we had finished our ride and attempted to return our bikes. We went back to the place where we had gotten them. Despite there being plenty of open spots, we were unable to secure our bikes in the rack. I called the help number on the kiosk thinking we could let them know something was wrong, but when I spoke with a representative (who I will not name as I fully believe this is on the company) from Capital Bikeshare, he was unable to be very helpful and notified me that "someone would be around to check it out, but not immediately, and definitely not within 48 hours". After disconnecting, I noticed the app said that there were no spots available, and I was disappointed that that wasn't the first thing looked at while speaking on the phone. (We are from out of town, my city does not have a bikeshare program, we are not very tech savvy) We went to the other bike rack down the mall and were were able to lock up our bikes there after 25 minutes of shoving the bike into the rack, lifting up the seat, trying all different sorts of angles. We went on our way to get out of the heat and grab some food. While we sat down to eat, we noticed our sister's time had not ended, despite locking up and getting the green flash and confirming the bike was locked. We were worried that she was going to be hit with the $1200 missing bike fee even though we confirmed this bike was locked. We tried chatting the customer service line, which disconnected with us 3 times without having answered our question and the representatives did not seem to understand or care that we wanted confirmation that she would not be charged for a bike that was not missing. One of the chat reps gave us a phone number to call that was invalid and did not call anyone. We called the number we previously called and the representative stated that they would "launch an investigation" but that the bike would remain "in ride" and they refused to give any sort of confirmation that we would not be charged for a missing bike because they were having tech issues. When asked to speak to a supervisor, the representative refused, stating that there was no superior and that there was no one else to help. That conversation ended with no confirmation of additional charges, no speaking to a supervisor, and that we would be emailed the findings of the investigation but that there was no timeline for how long it could take. Eventually, we noticed that our sisters ride with ended, and that we were all double charged for the length of time we had the bikes as well as the $8 day pass we had bought. We are continuing to monitor our credit cards as I would be completely unsurprised if they still attempted to charge us a missing bike fee. Horrible customer service, low quality bikes, hard to lock up bikes, and feel like they will take advantage of anyone who tried to use their service. I work in customer service on the phones and I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the service provided today, July 28th, 2025. I would absolutely give 0 stars. Someone left a capital bikeshare bike on my property (front lawn) for over a week and I have made numerous calls, even submitted the information online, asking for them to come and retrieve their bike, to no avail. I would think that they keep some inventory of knowing the location of their bikes. This is a scam- we rented 2 bikes from this company and docked them after an hour. We were supposed to be paying 8 dollars for each bike for the hour. We then got charged an additional 25 weeks later. Then we got a charge for 250 a couple days ago. When we contacted the company, we were told one of the bikes was docked wrong and their "review team" determined that the bike was missing. They will not tell us that there will be no other charges on the account and it depends on the review team. We froze the card we used but the whole customer service experience was sketchy. We wished we checked the reviews prior because a lot of people have had issues with the company continuing to charge them and claiming the bikes are missing. They have even been charged up to 1200. We were able to rent the bikes for the day and go at first, but when we went to get bikes to ride back later in the day, the station was down and we had to walk to another station. There, we were able to only get one bike to come out for us. When I called customer service, I was basically told to just suck it up and walk and maybe try another day to get some money back. I walked for a mile and then found another station and was able to get a bike out, but the troubles only started there. I called again the next day and was told to call another day. Then, I got home from our trip and saw they charged me $24 more and asked about that. They said one of the two bikes was never returned even though we were very careful to make sure we returned them and got the green light showing they were returned. I see that there is a possibility of $1200 charge for not returning a bike, but we did everything properly and shouldn't be charged this or the $24 and should also get $16 back from not working in the first place. Everything that could possibly go wrong,... went wrong. Bought a day pass for the family and headed out to explore our nations capital. Spent the rest of the day trying to find kiosks with enough open ports to return 4 bikes. The endless race amongst the other users to find the few open ports. Every station had multiple broken ports that wouldn't allow the bikes to be returned. Customer service was horrible. Their advice was to keep riding around the city all day and try to find one that would work. They finally told me to send in a video of the returned bike at the station. Approximately 1 hr after the bike was returned the timer on the app finally stopped. I got a bill at the end of the day showing the time never stopped and I was billed an additional 9 hrs. I use Capital Bikeshare regularly for transportation purposes. For the most part, I do not use Capital Bikeshare for pure leisure or tourism. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, these bikes have been my primary means of getting from point A to point B in the DMV. This became necessary as I do not own a car and, out of Respect for Public Health, strove to minimize my use of public transportation. I quickly learned the advantages of having a Capital Bikeshare membership. Here I enumerate these advantages (four in total), as well as a key disadvantage. 1) ON HEFT. These bikes are absolutely MASSIVE, in the sense that they are sturdy and of GREAT HEFT. It is truly a great comfort knowing that if I have an altercation with a vehicle, the vehicle is more likely to suffer severe damage than the bike itself. Even if your body is smashed to smithereens, at least you will not be liable for the cost of the bicycle. 2) ON THEFT. A great advantage of bikeshares in general is that you can utilize bicycle transport without living in perpetual fear for the livelihood of your personal bicycle. With Capital Bikeshare, you do not have to worry about someone stealing your wheel, welding your frame to a street light, or taking a machete to your handlebar. If you are concerned about someone doing this to a Capital Bikeshare bicycle (which, under most circumstances, would not be your liability anyways), please see Advantage 1: "On Heft" above. 3) ON EVASION. Perhaps the largest advantage of all for Capital Bikeshare is that making use of said mode of transport affords the rider the ability to swiftly and tactfully take leave from social situations and/or Undesirable Events. When dusk approaches, so does the perfect excuse to return home. Simply say, "I biked here, so I must leave IMMEDIATELY to get home before sunset." As I quickly learned, nobody questions this. Useful! 4) ON STORAGE. Lodged in front of the handlebars, users find a voluptuous space for storing all sorts of personal items. This feature is of great utility if you need to transport goods. The most salient disadvantage of these bicycles is a side effect of Advantage 1: "On Heft." Yes, you guessed correctly: the same heft that makes these bicycles so resilient to the wear and tear of vehicle collisions also makes them more difficult to move. A heavy bicycle requires far more work to move than a light, slick, and trendy road bicycle. So, when it comes to hills and mountains, these bicycles are immensely inefficient and demand much effort. Fortunately, if you are too exhausted, you can leave the bike at the bottom of a hill, ride a donkey up the hill (if you have), and--thanks to the prevalence of CaBi docking stations--pick up a new bike after reaching the summit. Several additional points must be catalogued. First, I recommend that you wear a helmet whenever possible. It prevents your skull from splintering into pieces in the unfortunate case of a collision. Second, I recommend being assertive, particularly when it come to designated bicycle lanes. Some drivers have little respect, and even less sense. You have to stand your ground. As a cyclist, you put in the work to move yourself; the least you can demand is that the Norms of Road Travel are respected. Overall, Capital Bikeshare is a very useful means of transportation. I have paid for 2 annual memberships in CB-now-owned-by-Lyft for years because there is a docking station near my house so I knew I would use it. Just last week they replaced the stations with ones that need an app or a key with a code. It does NOT take the kind of key I have, thereby rendering this station useless--and possibly others if more are to be replaced. CB/Lyft wants to force me into using an app, which I will not do for security reasons, and to charge me for a new key when it is their fault, not mine, that I need a new one. 2 stars because I was able to rent 1 bike for myself via the app with some effort. However, when I tried to rent 3 more bikes on a day pass for my friends from out of town...it was a major hassle. We only had a few hours which is why we opted for biking rather than walking. But sadly 20-30 min was spent trying to get access to the other bikes. Thankfully the call center was relatively quick to respond. But the system was not so responsive. Several kiosks were not functioning and in addition, you cannot rent more than 2 bikes at a time on one credit card. This caused a problem and delay when trying to rent 3 additional bikes to my app purchased rental. In the end, my guests had to use their credit card to get their bikes and we only had about 2 hours to do all the monuments on the national mall. For my 1st time usage of Capital Bikeshare all went well. I wanted to walk the 2.5 miles & my co-worker wanted to bike it...she paid, easy compromise. I didn't hover while she used her credit card to obtain the print out code used to unlock the bike from the secured docking station. You have 15 seconds to input the code or you'll have to start over. Just my luck that Alex, a Bikeshare employee was present checking bikes. I took that advantage to ask the questions I do so well as a newbie. You can pay per trip, get a 24 hour pass or sign up for an annual membership...the 'under 30 minutes' is the key factor in what you will pay. Over 3500 bikes within 440 stations & counting. If a bike is not rideable, he radios his counterparts, provides the information & then loads the bikes into the van...looked like a patty wagon on a positive note. These are not tour de france bicycles, yet they are comfortable enough to get you to where you are going. If you get tired before your destination, there are massive docking stations in close proximity to drop the bike off. How do you know how close a docking station is you may ponder? My co-worker has an App (real time programming) that shows where the nearest docking station is located & the availability. There's no colorful basket with streamers present, yet a bungee cord apparatus that securely holds your tote, briefcase or what have you. I appreciate the bike lanes, it's a small safeguard...using a helmet is a bigger one. Back to the banter of walking & such, I asked my co-worker how she'd be able to ride in her pumps...just as easy as I rode in my dress. & we blended in amongst the masses of red bikes just fine. read more

Capital Bikeshare is another major city bike-share program that works quite well, IMHO. I've enjoyed city bikes in Montreal, Boston and D.C. and found them an excellent way to explore a city. To best enjoy the benefits of the program, I recommend visiting the Captal Bikeshare website to fully understand how it works - easier than standing at a Bikeshare kiosk trying to figure out what the heck you are supposed to do. The bikes themselves are built like tanks - they have to be. As an avid rider of expensive bikes, I have a great appreciation for the bike-share beasts. Frankly, I find them very stable and easy to handle. I like the bell, flashing LED lights and the basket on the front of the bike - all quite useful. Most bikes are in decent shape, however some squeak and are a little more beat up than others. As far as billing, it's quite clear that the intent of these bikes are to use them for under thirty minutes at-a-time and there is a modest charge for 30+ minutes. During my recent afternoon exploration in D.C., I bought a 24 hour pass ($8) and used 9 different bikes with only one 30+ minute ride (additional $2). Basically, $10 for several hours of riding, docking bikes, walking around and riding again.) So, if you like to get out and about and have a flair for adventure, Capital Bikeshare bikes are the ticket. Me and my friend rented out bikes, I used the physical kiosk present near the bike racks while my friend used their app. The checking out of bikes was relatively easy and simple both ways. We used the bikes for about an hour, with no reoccurring membership, and checked our bikes back to the rack. Both of our bikes showed green lights to represent that the racks recognized we had returned our bikes. We went about our day after, only for me to find out a few hours later (via text) that the bike had NOT been checked into the rack and someone had taken it used it all through the night. For a trip that was supposed to cost me about $5, I was told to pay up $200 instead (which they charged me even when I gave them no authorization to do so). It took me 3 weeks of going back and forth with their service reps all to hear that they can't do anything and then ghosting me. I had to go through my bank to get the refund. Second instance, I decided to give them a try cause everyone deserves a second chance, or so I thought. Nope, they failed me again lol. Was out with a friend, decided to sign up with CaBi through their app, when I tried renting a bike it asked for my age. I mis-clicked the confirm button before I could change the date, and was instantly blocked from using their services. Their app is extremely limited to update information already entered there. So I then reached out to their customer service again and it was totally useless. Used it twice on vacation. The second ride they charged me a heavy 'bad parking fine' for sitting next to my bike and eating lunch. I paid for the 8 unlimited pass and was also charged by the minute. Bottom Line: A good concept that needs some refinement as does DC's bike lanes. I like the idea of communal rental bikes but I think Capital Bikeshare could execute a lot better. For starters, the pricing and rules can be confusing. First you have to purchase a membership and there are about five choices. Next you pay by the minute but you have to redock the bike every so often or you'll get charged extra. So if your feet need a break and you want to ride a short distance to the closet Metro station it would cost about $8 which isn't worth it. Recently, because of the Metro Safetrak initiative Capital Bikeshare is temporarily offering $2 rides if you return the bike under 30 minutes. If Capital Bikeshare adopts this model for the long term I think I would easily give it four stars. There are stations all over the DC area so that is great although the stations could be empty when you need a bike or full when you need to return one. That is a bummer and probably means more walking. The bikes are durable which means they are heavy so no popping wheelies or Tour de France sprints. Helmets aren't available but are often needed. If you're a tourist wanting to cover lots of ground in the federal city you might want to consider renting a bike AND helmet through Bike and Roll. I suspect they might even provide route maps. Exploring DC by bike is great because you can get to places that are not accessible by the Metro like the Jefferson Memorial. About those helmets, biking parts of DC can be very challenging. You can't legally ride on sidewalks or even on the gravel paths along the National Mall. Although that isn't really enforced as evidenced by all of the people doing it, I'm a rule follower so I try to stick to the road. The trick about that is you might find yourself riding in the wrong direction an extra 1/4 mile because you get stuck on a one way street or divided highway. There are few dedicated bike lanes and they often run down the center of traffic lanes instead of along the shoulder. read more

A 3 mile ride about an hr and 20 min walk so about an hr ride. We got misguided a few times bc our GPS didn't have bike GPS so it took us about 1hr and a half but it was super super fun. Burned all the calories I ate from Pound the hill which btw DELICIOUS... The cost is a hold of $105 per bike but you get that back, $7 cost and additional $2 per hr or you can the 3 days pass which now I wish we should have done. There's also a yearly plan of only $70. We rode for a couple of hours and stopped by our hotel and a BIKE RACK to go to the bathroom. When we came back out, one of the bike's were gone. Mind you, there was nothing we could do in order to lock the bike. There is nothing on the bike to connect to anything. After calling and making a report, we docked one of the other bike's. We were led to believe that if the bike was not recovered, I would be charged $1200. They said I had to a certain date to return the missing bike. However, there was no way I could have done that. With having to leave to go back home, that was also impossible to do. After multiple calls and emails, we were told we would still need to pay $250. That's much better than $1200, but seeing that I had no control over the bike being stolen at a BIKE RACK, I should not have been charged. We will definitely not be renting bikes through them again. I will never use this service or support this company. These bikes are trash and the representatives are not real people. I locked a bike and it beeped and received a text that it wasn't locked. There was no way to pull the bike out after we locked it. The reps on the phone said there is no way to help me and that I needed to go back to dock (which is now midnight since they didn't give me the contact number until 11:15pm). They say the only way I can waive fees is to travel back to the dock stations and stand at the bike again. I told them there was no way to pull the bike out and they said there was nothing they can do then even though I rented two bikes and "properly" locked the other one. Worse service ever. I was visiting DC and decided to rent out two bikes for my fiancé and I. I paid for the a day pass which was 8.00 for 24 hours. We had the bikes for about 30-45 mins. We returned to the driveway docking station. We were the bikes click into the docks and thought everything was fine. So we left! An hour later I received an text saying the bikes need to be returned so I will not get charge. I called the number and asked for assistance. I explained to her we docked both bikes at the docking station were receive them from she said she will have someone got there and check them for me, so I will be charge extra fees. I look at my bank statement and was charge 121.96!! I called to asked if I can get an refund because the bikes were docked in the charging station. I was told no because it was not properly docked. It was my responsibility. I told him I was just visiting and I was not from that area. I thought once heard a click in was in properly. He then, said well you could have been charge for a loss bike which would cost you 2,000. I told him! The bikes were not lost they were in docking station!!! I asked to speak to manager. He told me the manager was busy and will tell me the same thing. I should read the policy online. He said it was not about him. I explained to him it was not about him. It's about me asking for assistance the first time and expecting them to stand by there word! He will not let me speak to anyone else. Never again will do that!!! People are not helpful these days! If you get bike just make sure you put in the docking station properly! Because you could get charge 2000 for a loss bike. read more

This company has repeatedly disappointed me. I docked my bike, the red light went on and yet I was told the ride was still in progress. My entire Tuesday was screened up because I made the "mistake" of taking myself out for a bike ride. The back end of this company is a disaster. I'm demanding a full refund from my ride today 8/11/21. If for any reason you dock your bike, your ride home will be compromised which is not only unfair but it could be dangerous and unsafe. read more

Easiest way to commute around DC. Well worth the $85 a year and includes a fun point based system to encourage riding

Tried to get three rides today. Each time experienced some issues and had to call the customer service. First time, the station not release the bike but still charged me. Second time, could not return the bike to the dock. Though I parked to a public parking ramp and it's allowed in the area, I still got charged for the $25 parking fee. Third time, could not dock the bike back to the station again. I called right away. They asked me to park at another station, which is not working either. Guess what, I had to pay the fee again! What a scam company! Now I understand why the bikes are everywhere but people just grab the scooter and other e-bikes even this being much cheaper. read more

SCAM!! A day pass is NOT for unlimited 24 hr access, it's for unlimited "30 min bike rides" - meaning you have to return the bike every 30 mins not to get charged extra. Even then, you get charged $1 for every time you take a bike off the thing. We bought a "day pass" and did all the monuments and returned it to the same kiosk hours later and were charged over $100. read more

Credit card fraud. Be careful with this fraudulent company. It will without your consent port your credit card information from parent company Lyft and use it as default for charges without asking to change your set default. And they'll blame you for the mistake. read more
