Traveling to work on Saturday in DC is a nightmare! City blockades all over downtown; rerouting buses and blocking all traffic. So I resort to the notorious RED LINE. As I enter train, metro workers are telling Shady Grove paxs that red line is single tracking so we all hv to go to the NOMA side for SHADY GROVE train. After a delay and 5 min wait for SHADY GROVE train, the SG train arrives on its normal side of the tracks while all its paxs were sent to the wrong side to board. Then the Shady Grove train conductor had the nerve to try to pull off in just a few seconds. Not even remotely trying to wait for all the customers who have been told to go to the opposite side. Customers had to fight to hold this train so that all of the passengers who were told wrong, could get to the other side to get on the train they had been waiting for. Then Mayor needs to resign today!!!!!!! read more

The red line is very much needed for someone like myself who walks with a cane and also uses metro access. One day last week before the Juneteenth weekend, I was at Metro Center waiting on a train going to Glenmont at the end of the line. When train 125 approached, it was rush hour. As train 125 came to a stop, a few people at my car 3023 got on, and a gentleman got caught in the door before we had a chance to get on the train. The doors were closing, and there was a young mother with her child behind the gentleman caught in the door. I was behind the mother with her child in her arms. I know when you hear that the doors are closing, I always notice the train personnel looking out the first car window before you hear that announcement. There is no way that the driver looked out the window with so many people still on the platform on the outside of the train. When I got to Glenmont, I noticed that the train was leaving the opposite direction, but I did notice the driver was a female because she was sitting outside of the cab like a passenger which let's me know there's a driver at the other end. I was informed that she was a new driver. If that's the case, it seems like the other driver is setting a bad example for the new employee. I was in New York the weekend before on the weekend, and the train was very crowded and didn't see anything like that. Most days, you do notice people running after the announcement, trying to get on the train and forcing the door back open. This was not that situation. read more

The DC Metro Red Line - The car I was at when the doors closed on a passenger train 125 - Public Transportation Near Me

The DC Metro Red Line is the oldest route in the system opening in 1976. It is the longest route forming a U-shape between Shady Grove and Glenmont Stations. Metro Center is at the bottom where you can transfer to any other line. The Red Line is also the busiest servicing much of Maryland and downtown DC. Due to the Rockville Canopy Replacement Project, the Shady Grove and Rockville Metro Stations will be closed until December 4, 2021. Free shuttle buses will be available at both stops. Impossible to avoid, yet essential to many commutes. read more

Unimpressed, I am. There are better train lines in many other cities. London. Paris. Rome. Chicago. Atlanta. Boston. Minneapolis. Do those train lines leave you on a platform half way to your destination when the conductor announces "This train is now out of service"? On this latest excursion, we rode from Shady Grove to Gallery Place and back. For someone who doesn't do stairs or escalators, we found it to be quite challenging. Though to be honest, there was at least an elevator. Many other cities are not nearly as handicap-accessible. "I've experienced better" doesn't quite do it justice. Having just come down from visiting New York and using the subway pretty much exclusively, the DC metro system is a huge and confusing disappointment. Although better than what I have back in Miami (ours is called Metro Rail) the DC metro system has much to be desired when it comes to speed, pricing, and usability. I have to break these down a little to explain my experience. Speed: Very long wait times between trains. Miss one and you'll get stuck waiting quite a bit for another train. This is especially true for stations that use the same tracks for different color trains. Pricing: This is the most confusing part of the whole system. Pricing for distance, off peak, on peak, plus a card fee. Really? Too complicated, especially for people who don't live here and it's really expensive, especially compared to New York's system. Just look at the 7 day pass to see the price difference: $30 vs $57 Not worth it, especially since I wasn't going to travel back and forth nearly as much as I would in NYC. My rental car cost me $60 for 3 days and got 3 people around easily and I got to see and do more with it than having to deal with the trains. Usability: Unless you are staying near a station and only plan on going places that are near a station I can see using it to get around, I don't want to take a bus and sit in traffic. In all my visits to the DC area I've found it's just cheaper and easier just to rent a car and deal with parking. My experience with the red line in particular was extra disappointing, the stations were extra busy and the trains were overloaded. I also noticed the train doors are impatient as hell, closing on people quickly and on the 2nd attempt no longer re-opening to let people in. I saw on several occasions people who were halfway in the train getting shut out and leaving them stuck waiting for the next one. The only one good thing I can say about the whole system is that the stations are very clean compared to New York, but limited usefulness means I'll be renting a car whenever I visit. read more

The red line is really sad. Constant stoppages of service, outages of escalators, and absurdly high prices for trains that haven't been upgraded in decades and never run often enough. While the other lines share tracks in DC, the red line doesn't, meaning that it isn't as useful and doesn't have as many trains. And yet it serves most of the places that people actually want to go. I live and work literally right at Metro stops and find it easier and cheaper to drive almost regardless of the situation. They talk incessantly about upgrading and expanding the Metro, but the reality is there is an enormous amount of work that should have been finished years ago that isn't yet even started. read more

Theirs always a escalator down like ALWAYS followed by continuous single tracking and not to mention no disrespect but homeless people creeping you out early in the morning. At 6:18am mostly men playing with them selfs and you hardly EVER see transit police only when their called or a reported threat close by say a federal building! The station managers are always nasty and never want you to use the bathroom if needed too. Also when it's hot outside you can only be guaranteed cool air at the front of the train because that's where the conductor is and lastly. They are always going up on the fairs ...... with this type of service they should have a ride for free week it's crazy and just to think I've been using their services for going on 18yrs now ! read more

There is an old saying that goes something like: "Cheap, quick, good. Pick two". The Red Line decided on "none of the above". Whether it is an 18 minute wait on weekends or a 15 minute train stoppage on your ride home the Red LIne will find some way to annoy you. With that in mind here are some tips to survive your next Red Line adventure. 1. If you are in the District and it is less than 3 stops just walk. On weekends you'll likely get there quicker and during rush hour you won't be surrounded by people who think deodorant is optional. 2. If you have an important appointment plan on a 20 minute delay or take a cab. The Red LIne always seems to break down when you need to get somewhere quick or really have to go to the bathroom. Don't let it trap you underground when you're in a hurry. 3. If you live south of Van Ness and depend on the Red Line for your daily commute into the District expect to have at least one full train go by before you get on. I've heard all the excuses "it is the oldest line", "The constant maintenance will improve service in a few years" or "Hey it is better than walking!". Don't let the apologists convince you: service on the redline has been terrible for at least a decade and won't get better until people demand it. The only good thing I can think about the Red Line is it convinced me to bike and walk more often. read more

This review is for the 7:30pm red line metro train headed for Glenmont 6/2/2009. The operator, the Judiciary Sq. station manager, the whiz-woman engineer problem-decipherer who boarded at Judiciary Sq, all of you suck. Why? Because this train was a nice cool train. One of the modern peacock blue and burgundy numbers with the overhead metal hang straps and plenty of space to stand with logically placed handrails. But the train was slugging along at a snails pace and stopping in the tunnels and straining to close the doors. All along the way, from Metro Center (where I boarded) to Judiciary Square (where I got off) the operator was announcing (i.e. since the train was so new and modern, we could actually HEAR the announcement...) "Ladies and Gentlemen, this train is experiencing technical difficulties and will be offloading at Union Station." The whole way. Metro Center. Gallery Place. So, as a veteran Metro rider, I know how painful it can be when the whole train is offloaded. Especially if its offloaded at a busy station like Union Station, where the platform is in the center and folk get to pushing and shoving, and folk have suitcases and baggage because they just got off Amtrak, etc. So I got off at Judiciary Square figuring I'd just hop on the next train prior to all of the other schmos who waited to be offloaded at Union Sta. Several other veteran Metro riders did the same thing. That train practically emptied out at Judiciary Sq. Only a few people, maybe 11, stayed on board. Again, this train was struggling to depart Judiciary Sq to make its final stop Union Station. The announcement was made. The doors struggle to close once. Close. The train slugs 2 feet. Stops. The doors re-open. Some woman, heretofore mentioned as the "whiz woman engineer problem-decipherer who boarded at Judiciary Sq" boards, does something, and the train closes its doors and takes off. Here's where the sucking starts. Now, another Metro employee descends the escalator. I ask him "Hey, what was wrong with the train? It seemed like one of the newer ones..." He replies "Oh, its ok, now." WHAT?!?!? WTFMFWTFAYT? Gee, thanks for making THAT announcement so that we could all get back on and get to our destination, buncha jerx. The next train was one of those hot, funky, butterscotch and marigold sweatboxes with no A/C and some baby crying. Ugh. Metro Red Line You Suck! read more

I lived in Washington DC for three years and used the red line almost every day. I guess the trendy thing to do is b*tch about how much it sucks. There are even many websites dedicated to the metro and how much it apparently stinks. Please. Those kind of websites just show how spoiled a large majority of Americans truly are and how easy they truly have it. I always wonder if any of these people have ever rode a truly horrible system such as the transmilenio in Bogota or been on a really packed transit system like Beijing or Istanbul or dealt with delays in your average African city. I know I have. Gosh, the DC metro is amazing compared to those, give it a rest already, you sound like a bunch of spoiled brats when you complain about something so little and so trivial like a door opening on the wrong side or one..out of a total of THREE ..esculators breaking down at some station. Or omg, waiting for 20 whole minutes, smartphone in hand of course. Please. I hadn't traveled on the subway for many years and I remember that it was becoming much dirtier with old and poorly maintained cars. I thought that everything was improving after the virus with the sanitary measures, and with the new seasons. But I got the worst disappointment of all this Sunday that I traveled on the red and blue lines, I had never seen so many beggars in my life especially at the Gallery China Town station. A wagon had literally been used as a toilet for shitting. the cars had garbage and food, the train cars are still just as old and neglected. As a woman, it scares me when I leave at the stations and see some homeless people looking at me as if they wanted something. I DO NOT SEEM FAIR AS A CITIZEN to pay for a fee and pay taxes that are not even invested in the progress of the city. What an unpleasant experience. I saw families with children especially on Sundays who want to enjoy a nice day and having to go through this is very undignified. Why do politicians not care about helping these people with needs and how is it possible that there is no transport system that is worth for users. What a lack of respect for the citizens who pay for the Metro and the people who visit the capital. Just as there's a video game for shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, the Red Line's home game came out years ago for the PC. It was called The Oregon Trail. Art imitates life in the sense that most people succumb to dysentery before reaching their destination due to single tracking and offloading trains. There's a mini-game I like to play sometimes called, "Who Wants to Keep Their Job?" That's where you get to the station 20 minutes early only to find out that the trains aren't moving due to "a disruption," and everyone races up the broken escalators to fight for standing-room-only on the ONE bus headed downtown. If you somehow make it onto that bus, you must then fight people trying to squeeze on at the other stations along the way. All jokes aside, complaining about Metro is like complaining about the electric company. There's only one provider, so there isn't much you can do. When it works, it's great at getting you from A to B. When it isn't working, it's great at getting you from A to A and a half, and making you sympathetic to the handsome guy (me) digging his own subway tunnel with a shovel out in front of his apartment. read more

When I visited DC (almost three years ago!), I stayed with a friend in Dupont Circle. I spent most of my days at museums and other typical DC tourist destinations, and the Red Line was my chariot of choice. I don't have experience beyond going from Dupont Circle to Metro Center or Chinatown and back, but my train-riding was mostly pleasant. There were a couple of times when I boarded either the wrong train altogether or the correct train but going in the wrong direction, but these mistakes were mine and had nothing to do with inadequate signs. I waited a little longer for the Red Line on occasion than I would have liked to, but when the trains did arrive they weren't packed, as late BART trains always seem to be. read more

Avoid on the weekend, during off-peak hours, and on days ending with "y". That's a little harsh. The red line will usually take you from point "A" to point "B". I say usually because trains will experience breakdowns and because it only runs until midnight (during the week). At night, the frequency drops considerably. This can easily add 20 minutes to your transport time. It is odd to see all escalators functioning. The staff members do not have a positive attitude nor do they have a good work ethic. It's really sad because the infrastructure isn't that bad. Let's quickly dispel a misconception for people who are new to the red line. "We apologize for any weekend delays. This line is single tracking due to maintenance" -metro staff This will never end. All of the sun's hydrogen will fuse into helium before the maintenance is finished. read more

From the moment you use your card to come in to the station you should have 15 min to get out and no money should be charged!!! NO NO NO NO AND NO !!! they are saying we don't know when you will get your money back you must register the card and then maybe next year or who knows when it will get back on your card 11:28 to managers at the china town entrance ! The DC Metro Red Line - Public Transportation Near Me

I can't give the red line one star because, as I always tell my friends, why don't you take cabs instead and see how that treats you? At two bucks a pop,. the red line isn't all bad. It is by far the cheapest way to get from point A to point B, where point A is my house and point B is my work in Bethesda (alas, there is no bus that I can take instead). And there lies the crux of the issue: when you long for a bus you know there's a problem. Indeed, I do take the bus to Dupont whenever I can rather than chancing it on the red line, and I unfortunately have to agree with reviewers who say that people who are here on vacation can't comprehend what the rest of us go through on a weekly basis when we are depending on this monstrosity to get us to work on time. First, the escalators are out as often as not and the elevators are often out too (at Bethesda, it is now going on a year. Literally.) I have a knee problem and am not supposed to climb stairs when I can avoid it. Thus, trudging up the 170 some steps at the Bethesda metro is not exactly my idea of a good time. Second, single-tracking is out of control, even on the weekdays. Third, in summer good luck avoiding cars with no air conditioning for a whole week. It's like Russian roulette. Finally, the trains are generally dirty and run down. I actually am not subtracting any stars for that, but some updates might be nice. And so, Metro. Location and route wise, the red line is awesome. It goes pretty much everywhere you want to go as a DC resident (the blue and orange lines may be more useful for suburbanites and tourists) but the actual experience of the line is hell. There is always some sort of maintenance on the Red Line and this can prove especially troublesome when you are trying to get on at Metro Center or Union Station which are two of the busiest and crowded stops on the red line. I have honestly been severely late to work because of the red line. Luckily, most people in DC know the plight of red liners so they are understanding to the situation but it always seems as if the Shady Grove side from Union Station takes disproportionately longer than the Glenmont side. Were it not for all of these maintenance issues and delays the red line would be unbeatable for overall convenience and geographical route but the delays and issues completely ruin the experience. read more

I didn't realize that Yelp Reviewed the Metro lines. Here's my chance. I was hard pressed to say anything specific about the Red Line I wouldn't say about the other lines until I remembered THE INCIDENT. The Red line occasionally terminates at Grovesnor. I don't how you figure this out if you're an occasional user because none of the maps mark Grovesnor as a terminus. One day I was on a Red Line from downtown to Shady Grove. The driver as usual mumbles something. The train stopped at Grovesnor. I was surprised to see everyone rise to leave the train except me and a sleeping guy. The train kind of backed up and then went into a cave. Everything got dark and then the train shut off. About this time, I realized there must be a reason everyone got off the train. While still puzzling my options, a workman came along, saw me, opened the door and said, "W-T-F are you doing here?" So then they had to back the train onto the tracks again to open the door in a safe location. I'm pretty sure that's not how they meant for everyone to exit at Grovesnor. Kind of caused by 2 events: the mumbling operator and the lack of notation on a map. Another thing that puzzles me. Farragut West is Orange; Farragut North is on the Red line. They have exits about a block from each other. I noticed the Farragut West has a sign that says something like, "Free transfer to the Red line Farragut North." I haven't spotted any other signs and have no idea how the transfer works. read more

I'm aware of the Washington Metro review, but I think that the Red Line needs its own review. After all, where would the metro system be with out "Big Red"? It would be nowhere, thats where. The Red Line is always undergoing some maintenance or some other bullshit that always keeps it from promptly running. This especially true around the very hot or very cold months, when the trains have to slow to a glacial pace to keep from derailing on the warping tracks. This track warping phenomena is irritating for everybody, but mostly for those waiting at out door stations like Grosvenor. Its the inconsistent, but always crucial Red Line. read more

When you don't have a car and you need to travel distances too far to cover on foot in a timely manner, you must turn to the Metro. Sure, you could avoid it for as long as possible or take taxis but taxis are not quick during rush hour vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Apps for your phone or DC's Metro website can assist you with planning your route and showing train times, but this is not accurate 100% of the time. The trains and tracks appear to have issues, perhaps from years of neglect. Now expect delay after delay, especially on the weekends. Red line should be called wait line. There should be discount fares for times of lengthy delays. read more

I had a class to attend tonight, so I left work early, intending to take an earlier train. Metro Red Line didn't show up for a half hour, and by the time I made it to Union Station, I had missed two trains. By the time I got a train back to my car, and walked to my parking space, it was two hours after leaving work, and the class had been in session for 45 minutes already. When Metro works, it's good, fairly clean (at least compared to SEPTA lines I grew up with), and reliable. But if anything causes a disruption, they have no way to compensate. read more

I live on the Red Line, so I use it to get everywhere. The off-peak trains have gotten really infrequent due to budget cuts, but the fares keep going up. It's definitely the busiest of the lines, especially if you try to get on the last couple of trains into the city center on a workday that will reach Metro Center by 9. I try to go against the traffic during rush hour, as it's worth paying for peak of the peak to get faster service. On weekends, just take a bus. They're always closing the lines down for track work, going more than 20 minutes without a train, and turning the trains around at Dupont Circle. read more

The dc metro in its entirety is very crappy and expensive. For the cost of commute you get single tracking, safe tracking, random stations being closed (they would provide a free shuttle to another station, but when you get to the station, you have to pay again, which makes your trip longer and more expensive), trains offloading people for no reason, etc. Also, why do they take forever just to open the doors at a stop? Sometimes driving is faster than metro, even with DC traffic. read more

I'm sorry, but if you don't live here and take the Metro at least M-F, or on a regular basis to partake in nightlife on the weekends, you don't have the right to write a review about the Red Line! There is no way you can comprehend the depth of its sucktitude through casual ridership. Whether we're talking trains or escalators or smoking escalators, or smoking tunnels, it sucks. It really sucks. It sucks so hard on a regular basis that I know someone who actually went back to driving to work and paying for parking instead of using a combination of a free shuttle to the Metro and the train to commute. Why is it so hard to keep the escalators working? Where are all of the additional fare increases over the past few years going to? Executive salaries? Oh, and I understand that Las Vegas has the most outdoor escalators on Earth. I assume they handle much more trash and vomit than ours do, but you can bet they keep those suckers moving. If not, somebody's kneecaps might get broken. I'm just sayin'. Take a data collection trip and learn something. Being held underground yesterday evening for entirely too long between Metro Center and Farragut North for no apparent reason prompted this rambling review. And I guess I'm harboring some residual irritation from the delays on the Orange line last weekend. Another q: Why is the ride extremely bumpy lately? It's kinda scary. The Red Line has some new cars, with large , comfortable seats that actually have lumbar support. The trains have speaker systems that actually work; and, are understandable. We took the line back to the hotel from Gallery Place; and, then the next day to the National Zoo; and, then back to Gallery Place to switch trains on the way to Ben's Chili Bowl. The Red Line's new cars are very nice; but, I did have trouble adding value to our cards, as I was fumbling with three cards and my Visa; and, the transactions canceled out 3 times on my. I have the unfortunate opportunity to ride metro red line daily. This is the worst experience and makes me second guess my work commute. It is slow, over crowded, and always has some delay or issue. I am baffled by the fact that daily riders like myself spend over $20 to take this transit and yet they can't even compare to a place half the price for riding like NYC? Who is in charge and how can you live with yourself for charging us what you do and causing such awful experiences. UGH. It's a pissing shame that the nation's metro system (which costs almost a meal to take) has the audacity to allow 26 minute wait times.

The red line is often my line of choice; it goes most of the places I want to go, and during the week it runs reasonably often. But it's horrible on the weekends, often has technical difficulties, and is horribly crowded during rush hour. I usually take the five minute walk to archives, instead of metro center across the street, just because metro center is so crowded! Still, if it's not rush hour or the weekend, the red line is great. read more

I'm not going to complain about how dirty or stinky it is. Not going to complain about bumpy roads and escalators that are out of service. This red line can be fatal for its customers. I've observed more than once how people get stuck between doors because red line is in a hurry. I understand it should meet certain timing but peoples' life is the most precious thing in this world unless Red Line driver is from a different planet and has different values. Dear Red line management please double check before closing your damn doors. There might be people stuck between your doors. We are humans and NOT a bunch of potatoes that are transferred from point A to point B. At the end of the day we are exhausted God's creatures, so PLEASE DON'T KILL US!!! read more
