After extensive research and calling multiple companies for rates, I'm so happy that I went with Capitol Auto Transport. My main concerns/ worries when choosing a company were 1) receiving a quote but having to ultimately pay much more 2) being given a delivery window but getting delayed and strung along 3) bad or no communication from the company/ driver. I read so many terrible reviews about other companies, so naturally I was stressed out. Reddit and Yelp lead me to Capitol, and I provided my info on their website. Within an hour I received a call from Andy (the owner of the company). I immediately felt comfortable speaking with him. He was friendly, thorough and transparent with their method of providing an estimate and booking a carrier. He was very communicative and even booked a pickup for me during Thanksgiving weekend. My vehicle was picked up in Los Angeles on a Saturday afternoon and delivered to Denver Monday evening. Payment is made upon delivery, so nothing is collected upfront. Recently had a car I purchased ship from LA to New Orleans. Having never had a car shipped, I went about researching companies. Put in requests for quotes at a few different places, one of them being Capitol Auto Transport (after reading some glowing reviews on Reddit). Most of the companies sent robo-calls back to me, but not CAT - I got a phone call from a super friendly chap (Andy) who introduced himself and went over the details of my shipment. He took the time to break down what any charges were for, and after a pleasant conversation, we agreed on what I needed (I went with an enclosed trailer). Within a few hours, Andy had secured transport with a carrier that CAT had worked with before and we were good to go. Throughout the few hours it took to set everything up, Andy was in constant contact with me over the phone as well as through text. Amazing service. Okay, so the day was set, and everything was ready - but my seller ended up having an issue day of pickup! I knew that this was going to at least cost me a deposit, and perhaps we'd have to start the search over again - not with CAT. These guys worked everything out for a slightly delayed pickup and everything went off without a hitch. As the delivery day approached, I got a phone call from the driver - they were early! Capitol Auto Transport (CAT) is a broker service that attempts to give you a decent broker service up front but has no existing relationships with drivers. This makes the actual experience terrible, ie, the Eastern European block driver who speaks zero english tries to drop your car off in the middle of an 8-lane expressway in a no-parking zone and yells at you because he has more expensive cars to take care of. While the above scenario is the fault of the hauling company the customer needs to understand the experience they are signing up for. There are transport brokers out there who have relationships with their drivers as I later learned. CAT provides an initial experience that is better than many of the other brokers thus two stars. The owner will talk to you in depth about the pitfalls of the broker industry and how to avoid scams. The true benefit is that you don't pay until the job is complete. Once paper work is in place and you've signed on the dotted line it's radio silence and you're the victim to whatever garbage hauler they connect you with. read more

Had a fantastic shipping experience with Capitol Auto Transport with shipping my car from Los Angeles to Cincinnati. What I liked the most was that their initial email isn't their spammed templates- I really felt that Andy put in the time to individualize it to your shipping needs. Andy provided a near-accurate quote right off the bat and then provided a stream of pertinent information of their process. (Also they don't spam call/text/email you if you don't respond to their first email which I found extremely irritating in looking for a shipping company). He listened to what I needed in terms of shipping and arrival date and always answered my slew of questions in a timely and professional manner. There was no question I felt uncomfortable or dumb asking- which was especially nice since it was my first time shipping a car. I wish Yelp would let me give 4.5 stars! First time shipping my car across the country and I found good reviews of Andy on Reddit and Yelp and decided to give it a try. He was very nice and explained the system to me and promptly found a driver and transport company for my car to go from Seattle to Michigan. The experience was not perfect: The transport truck ended up breaking down twice and so the car was supposed to arrive in 7-10 days but ended up taking 21 days with several different delays. (Yikes!) Luckily my plans were somewhat flexible and Andy was great -- I had his phone number to text or call so that he could track down what was going on with the car, and he was very helpful at allaying my concerns. He also got the transport company to give me $400 off given the circumstances. Car eventually arrived in perfect condition and basically spotless. These things must happen with a high enough volume of transports. I probably wouldn't use that particular transporter again but I would use Capitol as a broker again. read more

I can't say enough good things about my experience with Capitol Auto Transport. If you are looking to ship a vehicle this company is the absolute way to go, hands down. I recently had my camper van (a pretty large/difficult vehicle to move due to specific requirements such as weight/height/placement on carrier bed) shipped from Florida to New York safely and without incident in March. I would not hesitate to recommend the services of this company. Andy's communication was top notch via phone, email and text. He communicated well with me and also coordinated with the gentleman at the pick-up location. He is friendly, honest and on top of the process 100%. The broker fee, which they don't charge until your vehicle is officially picked up, is totally reasonable. The shipping cost you pay directly to the truck driver carrying your vehicle upon delivery. Andy is also very well versed in how the national database for vehicle transport and bidding system works which is extremely helpful in getting you a fair price. In addition, he takes the time to screen the carriers that accept your bid to make sure they are licensed/insured properly and meet certain standards. I already knew what it should really cost to ship my van and Andy was in that zone in his projections. I knew he was not being funny with the numbers. This industry can be difficult to navigate and there are lots of shady characters. I hope you find the rest of this useful: There are a lot of brokers that will try and make you pay upfront, and either low ball or inflate the price and promise you they can get a vehicle shipped asap for a certain price. IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY. No matter what price they tell you, your vehicle will be posted on the database and a carrier still has to accept that bid. Scenario 1: The bid is too low, a trucker won't take your car until the bid is raised. Your car will sit forever. The broker still keeps the money you already paid them. Scenario 2: The broker tells you a super high amount, but starts bidding at a lower amount (unbeknownst to you), hoping a trucker will accept the lower amount and broker pockets the extra money. Realistically your expectation to get a vehicle shipped, no matter who you use as long as they are reputable, should be in the 2-4 week zone. That time can definitely be shorter or a wee bit longer depending on time of year, weather, how many vehicles need to be moved on any particular route and a few other factors. For example, lots of cars commonly get shipped between Florida and New York so lots of carriers are available to drive that route vs shipping between more remote or less travelled locations. My camper van is another example. Due to the size, weight and height of my van, there are only certain trucks that can accommodate it and really only one or two spots on a carrier truck that a van of that size can go which limits options. Still, even with snow storms here in New York and other weather events along the route, despite the restraints of requirements, I still got my van delivered in 3 weeks. A lot of brokers will also try and make it sound like you are dealing directly with a carrier when you are not. They will refer to "their trucks" or "their carriers" So beware. If it is really a carrier they will have a certain kind of license/identifier number though I forget what it is called. Save yourself the heartache, confusion and wasted time and money sorting through the nonsense and just use Capitol. read more

Need to ship your car across the country? This is a broker you can trust. They look out for your best interests, because it's their reputation on the line if a carrier they recommended doesn't perform well. I sent my wife's car from California to New Jersey for a total of $995 ($195 broker fee + $800 for the carrier). Mike Dakota of Capitol Auto Transport explained the entire process to me, warned me that auto transport was an unregulated industry and that I should read reviews online. I gave him the day I wanted the driver to pick up the car. I was advised to give allowance in case the driver is late by a day or two. He found me a carrier within 24 hours and I gave the go ahead. The driver ended up coming the day after the day I asked for because he got delayed by rain. He called me to let me know so it was OK. 6 days later in NJ, I had my wife meet the driver in the parking lot of a shopping plaza. The car was there safe and sound. She gave him the $800 (cash only) and he gave her the paperwork and the auto transport was complete. Overall, it was quite the stress-free experience. 6 days to send your car from California to New Jersey and for under $1000. Can't beat that! read more

I needed my inoperative 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol moved from Palm City, Florida to Mt. Desert Island, Maine, so naturally I did what anyone in need of a service they've never before used would do - took to the worldwide web to see if I could find someone willing to provide said service. I put in a request for a quote and immediately I was bombarded with emails and phone calls. Things some of them said didn't sound right - like asking me for a "deposit" up front - and my bullshit detector was making loud noises in my head and I couldn't hear the voices that are usually there! So I looked up each company on Yelp and pored over their BBB ratings. Not one of them had a score above 2.8 on yelp or an acceptable BBB rating (most of them were F). I said to myself, "there's gotta be SOMEBODY in this business who is reputable!" As I kept looking on yelp, really the only site I trust to deliver honest ratings, I found 2: A guy named Bruce running his "Above the Rest" business via his cell phone, and Capitol Auto Transport. Bruce got back to me first, told me the ins and outs of the business, and by all measures was an honest guy. In the end, he didn't want to take my money because he didn't feel he could get a driver who would want to deliver to Mount Desert, Maine - about 3 hours Northeast of Portland. So I gave my business to Andrew, whose information about the business also would have been enlightening (if I hadn't already been enlightened previously.) Not only was he able to find someone more or less immediately who would do the route, but when the first trucking company wanted to wait indefinitely for pickup, he found another company who could do it within a few days, actually for LESS than what he quoted me. The trucking company he used was top notch, our driver was courteous and professional. This whole experience was worry-free and well worth the money. Not only did Andrew save me from what would have been a huge hassle going with a different company, but he saved me a trip to Florida where I would sweat my balls off in the Florida summer heat for several days while my vehicle was being repaired, where no doubt I would get my rear aperture penetrated by some dishonest mechanic who would try to take me for every last cent getting this vehicle to run. Then I'd have to drive it nearly 1700 miles back to Maine with no money while bleeding from the asshole. Andrew was worth every penny, and the money spent was well worth the time and hassle I saved booking through him. He's also a f@#$ing awesome guy, very responsive to text and email, willing to help and answer questions every step of the way, and he even collects transformers. I'm not gay or anything, but I'd drink his bathwater. If you need your vehicle transported anywhere, please call Andrew. Don't put your email/number in for a quote - you will get more or less a bunch of hacks looking to get your deposit and lock you into a service that will make you so angry you'll drop-kick an elderly person. Just call Andrew. They're all brokers who all do the same thing, but unlike most of them, Andrew is honest and professional and will get the job done with no hassle. Nobody has a driver waiting right there to take your vehicle. It has to go to "central dispatch" first. There is no reason to give a "deposit." The broker should not get paid until your vehicle is on the truck for delivery. Anyone who asks for money sooner is a f@#$ing crook! This was my 1st time really shipping a car to another state and Andy & Cat were very helpful in explaining the whole process and providing a reasonable quote. They do work as a middle man by connecting you with a trusted carrier through their network. I had no issues with the Carrier that was selected. They are great if you are only using them for a one way transport. They did an alright job for us one way, but not on the return trip. We asked lots of questions, and they did a great job of answering them. Transported our car from OR to S. CA and back. The initial pick up was smooth but It took them a week longer than quoted to find someone to bring it back from CA, even though I called a couple of times to confirm they were going to be on time picking up the car as we were planning a road trip. They explained due to the holiday weekend the drivers were all busy. I kind of had to be on them. Must have forgotten about the holiday weekend? We also had to pay more to the driver than quoted in the end because drivers want more when going from CA to OR rather than OR to CA. I feel like these 2 things could have been sussed out in advance. After a week no driver was accepting the bid that they had in the system, I said it was alright to increase the bid, because we really just needed the car back for our trip. After a few days of no word, I called a couple of other places and within 3 hours another company had a driver lined up for us, but because the other company put us in the system full of bids, I think this lit a fire for CAT to actually line someone up for us since they could see it. The guy we dealt with offered a discount on his fee, but in a weird way. I didn't accept it because it just seemed weird "you tell us what you want to pay us." just kind of seemed like he should have said, "since we screwed up, we'll take $150 off of our fee." rather than putting it on me. I would not hesitate to use them again if I had a one-way trip, just not a roundtrip transport. read more

I recently had to move from NJ to NV. I was super stressed out, not wanting to drive my family across country I had no clue what to do with my vehicles. I put in a request for quotes,and immediately was overwhelmed with multiple quotes and calls. I originally drove my car from CA to FL but when it came to time to bring it back, I just didn't have enough time to spare for another cross-country drive. I didn't really know too much about shipping my car and I still don't. There are a ton of companies out there and most of them have terrible ratings, so that's not useful. Before Capitol Auto Transport, I had put in my spam email and a fake phone number into a car transport service website and I STILL get emails from random companies and I'm so sorry if your number is 408-888-8888. I really am. I also had another company recommended by a friend and they fluctuated in their price and timeline by 200 dollars and 4 days respectively over a week. That same company also told me I needed to pick up my car from a designated area (which turned out to be 100 miles away from my parents' house...LOL). I found Capitol Auto Transport on Yelp and I generally trust Yelp reviews if they're from Yelpers who are active on Yelp so I contacted them for a quote. Andy got back to me that same day, answered all of my questions and wasn't pushy at all. He seems to be the kind of person that if you want to give him your business, he's appreciative but if you want to go somewhere else, he'll respect that. He gave me a price quote, amount of time it would take, and answered other miscellaneous questions I had. CAT is a broker service so they basically do the work of finding a transport service for you and negotiate a fair price. They do charge 200 dollars but only when your car gets picked up, not before then. You do need to give a minimum 3 day window of when your car can be picked up (the longer the period, the more likely they can pick a transport company they know is good). I gave a 5 day window and my car was picked up by Zareba Auto Transport on July 14th, and came to my parents' house on the morning of July 25th so about 11 days. Andy managed to get my car shipped for $75 less than what he quoted me too so I can't complain. My car arrived in good shape. I was happy with the results. You do need to pay the transport companies cash or with a cashier's check upon receiving your car. I did have a few belongings in my car and nothing was taken, but I definitely recommend not having anything valuable in the car that you would miss, just in case. I just assumed no one would want a pathology textbook or some used 6.5 women's shoes, but who knows, maybe you'll have a driver with a shoe fetish. Overall, I am very happy with the service I received and will use CAT again if I ever need to ship a car again. read more

I'm sorry I even bothered earlier in the day Google search. When I went on Google and signed up on an email list to obtain vendors, I obtained so much spam. Just go through these guys and have them do the work for you. Make sure u don't rush it and plan out your shipping. Otherwise you may be taken advantage of OR you can play it safe, ask if there's any extra room left, and have your spot filled for quite possibly a cheaper cost. My post it a little late, but hey. Legitimate and professional company. I shipped my vehicle from Florida to Idaho with ZERO headaches. Initially I had 'googled' for companies that do this type of service and the results are very overwhelming. I called one randomly and they asked for your CC in order to confirm your reservation. Capitol Auto Transport does NOT do that. If you go on their website, it explains to you the process and even gives you tips about choosing the right carrier. I was so happy with the entire process and definitely recommend it to anyone. My cost was $1,300--not bad at all. I used Capitol to transport an F150 from MA to FL. Since I'm a first-timer at this I went with a broker rather than work directly with a carrier as my schedule was tight due to work and needed things to go smoothly. Unfortunately, the truck was never picked up in MA 3 days in, wth no prospects in sight for a pick up date for transport. The rationale Capitol gave for this delay is that the first week of January is a busy week. I'm sure that's true, but I would have expected to be warned of this possibility when I spoke to Capitol mid December, instead I walked away from my initial conversation with the impression that a ship date of 1/4 would be lock since I wasn't looking to low-ball the bid. As a result I had to scramble and find another means of getting vehicle to FL, which of course came at a cost. A second disappointing aspect is that I had to initiate contact with Capitol the week of 1/4 to get progress reports; I would have hoped for more pro-active contact to keep me aprised of the progress (or lack thereof). So, why am I still giving a 3-star review (which Yelp defines as "A-OK") when the service was never delivered? It's because, despite my bad experience, my sense was the the folks at Capitol were decent guys who were trying to make things happen -- that is, I didn't get a sense they were shady. Ultimately I think this was a case of poor expectation-setting at the outset. If the first week of January is indeed such a bad week then I would have adjusted my schedule accordingly given my work schedule. So my advise to other Yelpers is A) to be careful on what dates you select for your transport, and B) to understand from the outset that you may in fact not get your vehicle transported anywhere near the date you put in for. The latter may be apparent to veterans, but it wasn't to me -- which is why I went with a broker in the first place, so that they could educate me. read more

In response to another users negative review I can say this: Yes they are a broker but they use drivers they trust, not just the lowest bidders. The driver needs specific instructions from the car owner where a suitable drop off location for the car is. The driver doesn't choose where to drop the car off. Its the responsibility of the car owner to know where an 18 wheeler can fit and offload a car. If the owner fails in this capacity then the driver will drop the car off wherever he can. I used CAT in March 2013 to ship my car from Florida to Ohio, and in January 2014 to ship my car from Ohio back to Florida. CAT is reliable and I would use them again if ever needed. They stick to the estimated price provided and guided me through the whole process. My advice to anyone who needs to ship a car would be: 1. Call CAT; 2. Get an Estimate in writing; 3. Confirm with CAT the carrier picking up your car; and 4. At pick-up, ask for ID from the Carrier and confirm that they are the same carrier told to you by CAT. The rest should work out smoothly. And the car being dirty at drop-off is normal when the car is on an open carrier. This is not a complaint, just stating facts. read more

The company I originally went with screwed me over...so I called Andy with Capitol out of desperation, and he helped me out IMMEDIATELY and made me feel great about all the trouble and stress I was going through. Absolutely the best transportation company hands down!! Reputable and honest, which is rare in the vehicle transportation world. I had gone with another company originally, due to the logistics of my vehicle being in non-operating condition, its location, and the other company promised the moon. Well they fell completely short and I could never get the original person on the phone nor could they give me a straight answer to when my car would be picked up. Three weeks of such is when I finally called Andy. He and Cat swung into action. He was honest and kept in communication with me. Not only did he broker me a reputable transporter but he did it within 3 days of me contacting them!! My car was delivered in a reasonable amount of time and in the same condition as when it left. The company is owned by Cat and Andy and they tend to handle most of the requests. The world of auto movers is a mixed business, and some companies do not take car of your car or fail to show up. Capitol Auto Transport is fantastic: 1) They don't take a deposit until they actually pick up your car. CAT is wonderful. We wanted to transport a Vette from WY to FL. It is not easy to find a trucking company on that route but CAT did it rather quickly! Cat & Andy were professional, friendly, and patient with all of our questions and phone calls. The trucking company they obtained for us was also excellent.
