It has been so long...and I was ready to chop off my pandemic hair, however, instead...I asked him to clean up the sides and neck and cut three inches off the length. Showed her my pic fr my Barber in Australia and this gal got all the details down perfectly but than added her own artistic twist that made it my best cut since. Excellent artist, talented barber and fun to chat with. I like when an artist is a "true" artist and not just fluff trying to be the part. I have natural waves and curls and she knew exactly what I was trying to articulate making it very manageable clean cut with a little edge. I explained how the last barber missed the mark prior to her so I grew it out to start all over. She was quick to catch on and correct the previous mistakes and even it all out. Been coming to this place for years, and it is the only place I will let cut my hair. I have had several of the barbers cut my hair, but AJ is my go-to. Every barber has been consistent and does a fantastic job! Even during the pandemic, Capitol is doing a great job to ensure the health and safety with their customers. I'm VERY Covid cautious and was happy to see Capitol Barber is taking the necessary steps to wear masks at all times and have customers not getting haircuts wait outside. Can't even explain how disappointed I am, but I'll try. A friend called me and said he wanted to get his hair cut and asked if I wanted to go and since I needed a cut I said "Yeah, come by and pick me up" We are driving an hour, at least so I checked Yelp and their website to make sure they were open....Yup, they are lets head down. Once we got to San Diego I figured "Ehhhh, let me call to make sure they aren't slammed and if there's a long wait. "ring...ring...ring....ring....The message machine is full and cannot take a message" Huh, well, maybe everyone is cutting hair and they couldn't get to the phone. We get into North Park and I call again....same thing, Arrived at the location and the security gate it across the front and locked WTF!! I jump out, maybe they are at lunch...nope nothing. I've been going to the same barbershop in North Park since I moved on, and I honestly have no complaints about them. But for a change, I decided to try Capitol Barbershop since my barber didn't have any same day openings and Capitol did. I rolled in (literally! on a LimeBike!) at 3:30pm last Friday and Tristan was my man. He spent a few minutes discussing what kind of a cut I wanted, and it seemed to be their thing here as their other barbers did the same. Of course your barber is going to ask you what you want done, but here it was done with a bit more focus on EXACTLY what you want. I told him my wants and needs, and Tristan went over what he was going to do. Great! 30 minutes later I walked out with a perfect cut. And he's a cool dude, semi-new to the shop. I appreciated hearing about his work history and even ran into an old buddy of mine when leaving the shop. It's a touch closer to home for me and nearer to the best happy hour in town (Working Class -- see you there!) so I'll be tempted to return here the next time I need a trim. One of the last things you think of when moving is finding a new barbershop. Then when you're in desperate need of a cut, reality sets in: It's hard to find a legit barber you can trust. I tried several places when we first moved to San Diego and got increasingly fed up with the poor cuts and crappy conversation. I finally found Capitol through Yelp and saw several reviews mentioning Chris. That was 2 years ago. And I haven't gone to a different barber or shop since. Cuts are great. Conversation is good. Price is ridiculously cheap (I believe it recently increased from $21 to $23, which is still a steal!), and you're in and out in 30 minutes. It seems like low skin fades can be challenging, but Chris always gets it right and truly cares about his craft. They even do the traditional straight blade on the neck, which is an absolute must. WOW. That was my first impression. I felt like I was going to my usual barber on a Monday afternoon for the 100th time. This was my first time at Capitol Barbershop since i'm not from the area. I live in LA, but I was in SD for work and I heard great things about this place. My dude Mason treated me with respect, listened to what I had to say, had some excellent suggestions. The crew there is very professional and respectful, and I honestly appreciate that the most. I have plenty of barbershops in LA, yet I will be making the trip down here next month to get a fresh cut from Mason! This place is a hidden gem. 10/5 Stars! This place lacks cleanliness and professionalism. They don't make their clients wear masks during COVID quarantine even though it's the law right now. I showed up and left immediately after seeing one of their clients sauntering around without a mask. Neither of the barbers asked him to correct this or leave. Extremely disappointed and dissatisfied in this shop. Made an appointment online because this place is by appointment only. When I show up to my appointment I get no greeting just "do you have an appointment " I said yes and waited. My barber is nowhere to be seen. I waited 10 minutes and still no sign of any acknowledgement from any barber or Frankie which I had the appointment scheduled with. I decided to leave after waiting so long. Finally 20 minutes after I left I get a text from Frankie if I'm still there for my appointment. Best barber in San Diego hands down. Paul cuts my husband's hair and my autistic 7 year old stepsons hair. This is the FIRST place we have found where he doesn't cry. We have tried kids hair salons all over San Diego and it's been a nightmare. However, the calm, small and unique atmosphere here at Capitol has worked magic. I've had Chris, Tristan, and AJ cut my hair before and all are excellent barbers. I've been going to AJ as a regular for about a year now and he's one of the funniest and most interesting people to talk to. While they don't offer you a "free beer" for waiting like some other barbershops do, this place is no frills and more reasonably priced than some other places.
