I went here after making an appointment for a particular person, came in on time, and I waited over 40 minutes and gave up. This guy would not stop chatting and telling stories when he couldn't see there was no interest. He would stop cutting while talking about his girlfriend and other random things. When I advised I still have the receipt and proof I came here he tried to claim because it had not happened in the last month it wasn't valid, as if Yelp had imposed some deadline and I missed the cut off. I have been going to Dame and Dapper for over a year (both locations) and only have good things to say about this barbershop. A bit of background, I moved to SD 6 years ago and was desperately looking for a barbershop that was consistent, professional, and clean. After jumping from barbershop to barbershop for 5 years, I was able to finally find a barbershop that I love to go to - Dame and Dapper. As a whole, Dame and Dapper is the most professional barbershop that I have been to in San Diego. Every barber there is friendly, professional, and consistent with their haircuts (I people watch a lot, lol). The shop is always kept clean and you can always see someone cleaning up the freshly cut hair on the floor, often helping other barbers clean their area too if they are busy cutting someone's hair. The environment in the shop makes me feel completely comfortable and is completely judgement-free. Although this location is in Hillcrest (commonly known as the gay area in San Diego), all people from all walks of life go to Dame and Dapper, which is probably one of the most amazing qualities this barbershop has. I have often been to a barbershop and immediately felt uncomfortable with the "bro-talk" that happens between barbers where the client is often left there in awkward silence. I have been getting a haircut with Joe (originally in the Mission Hills location) since my first visit at Dame and Dapper and have never looked for another barber since. Joe is by far the best barber I have ever had. He is always friendly, timely, and courteous. He always keeps his appointments and will always message me way ahead of time if he is running a bit late, which has only happened to be once and it was a 10 minute delay because he hadn't eaten lunch, lol. His haircuts are always consistent and often gives me recommendations on what I should do with my hair when I've given up on a certain hairstyle. He also educates you on your hair, the hair products you can use for different occasions, and how to style your hair. This information is absolutely invaluable for me as no one had ever told me what to use on my hair or how to even style it. Additionally, Joe is the ONLY barber I will ever trust to even touch my beard. After a horrible experience years back at another barbershop, I've been hesitant to let any barber touch my beard. It took me a couple of months to finally convince myself to have Joe trim it. However, Joe listened to what exactly what it is I was wanting (even when I don't know exactly how to say it haha) and reassures you throughout the entire cut, trim, shave, or whatever. Now, I always get a full haircut and beard trim/lineup every time I book an appointment. I have read some reviews that others have left about Dame and Dapper on 5th and am concerned about people's definition or expectations of a barbershop. First and foremost, Dame and Dapper on 5th is a barbershop. It is NOT a salon. People often think that they are one and the same, but they are two completely different services and experiences. Are you going to get the Beverly Hills salon and spa experience at Dame and Dapper (or any other barbershop for that matter)? Nope! And I don't come in to Dame and Dapper expecting that type of service - that would be an unfair misrepresentation of what a barbershop is as a business and a service provider. However, don't make that statement convince you that Dame and Dapper isn't professional, clean, or even classy because they are all 3 of those things and more. If you are new to San Diego looking for a barbershop, or even a native San Diegan and want to find a new barbershop, I highly suggest you check Dame and Dapper out. I just want to say that the lady who booked my appointment was very courteous and had excellent customer service. When i arrived at the shop for my appointment I was greeted by the barber Jolene. I was offered a drink which I thought was very courteous. Nothing but good vibes. I showed her a picture of the haircut I wanted and end results were just as I wanted. Throughout my cut Jolene would show me how it was turning out which I thought was terrific of her. I noticed she took her time while she did my cut and that's what I liked. 1. Horrid hair cutting inconsistency every single time with one of the stylists. She hardly remembers my haircut and I've been going to her for 3.5 months. I always had to instruct her on how my hair should be cut. I had to purchase my own cutting shears to cut my own hair at home because she never gets it right. It was always uneven. 2. Repugnant unprofessionalism with one of the stylist!!! My hair got really botched badly one day by her and it had to be corrected at another barbershop at Top Cutts on 930 W Washington St. GO THERE! They have more pride and professionalism. They corrected my botched haircut by one of the stylists at Dame & Dapper and made me feel good about myself again. The guys at Top Cutts listen to you and REMEMBER your haircut every time you go there. My hair is very difficult to work with that requires precision (it's just the way my hair is #sorrynotsorry) and these guys put this girl at Dame & Dapper to shame and SLAYED with their personable and professional demeanor and attention to detail with my haircut. Also it's $25 that includes a wash. You don't get a wash at Dame & Dapper because they don't have hair washing stations to begin with in which I was told they could be fined by the city. I won't name any names at Dame & Dapper but this stylist did not bother to respond to me when I texted her to correct the botched haircut. PROFESSIONAL hairstylists and barbers respond to clients in a timely manner and correct the issue immediately in these situations. She's not that. It took 4 weeks to correct the botched cut by her. 3. Extremely filthy salon. I went there from October 2018 to January 2019 and it was never clean. Filifty workstation and in general the whole place was filifty, past client's hair everywhere (client chair, floors, workstation, etc), bathroom disgusting, mirrors haven't been cleaned for months (ok maybe just one time but just ONE time). 4. By the way, ALL salons and barbershops are required to have sinks to wash client's hair by the city's code and requirements. They have NONE. Just saying. I've disputed one charge due to her horrid unprofessionalism, unresponsiveness and botched haircut. I did NOT want to write a negative review about this and just be done with this place but she had the audacity to say I'm in the wrong to my credit card company with no real arguments. Yet, I have texts of her unresponsive nature and a written statement (credit card company requested it) from my current stylist that she botched my hair and needed to be corrected. Please go to another Barbershop with professionalism and integrity!! read more

What to say... From start to finish my experience at Dame & Dapper was one to be forever remembered. I had just finished getting my lashes done at Deluxe Beauty next door ( amazing ). I walked into Dame & Dapper because I needed a quick trim because I had a red eye to catch for a conference in DC ... it was a Friday evening and who would have space LAST MINUTE... uh no one. I walked in to Dame & Dapper and was greeted with all smiles. A young lady by the name of Kandice approached me and I explained to her my situation. She mentioned to me she had a client coming in shortly and typically this would be the time she would take her break but instead she chose to be kind and take me last minute. I am so appreciative. Kandice went above and beyond. Yes, I was getting just a simple hair cut but aside from me just getting a simple cut she made sure my experience was excellent.
