Yes, these burgers are just as good as everyone says they are. I got the pastrami burger and added pickles (and if you get this burger, I would say pickles are a must!). The pastrami is thick cut and delicious (definitely not your average thin sliced deli pastrami) and the sauce and slaw complimented it perfectly. My personal preference was the Mushroom Blue Burger, but both were fantastic. The fries are great too. It makes no sense to me how a food truck this good is in the middle of nowhere Torrey. It could easily compete with some of the best food trucks in any major food city. One of the best burgers in the entire nation, and that's not just hyperbole, that's a Yelp fact. It's #22, to be precise, but it just may keep climbing the charts. That's right, Yelp pulled the data and we put together a list of the top burgers in America, and lil' old Capitol Burger in Torrey made the top 25. As luck would have it, a week after putting the list together and discovering Capitol Burger made the cut, I found out I would be taking a trip to Torrey and be in town for National Hamburger Day. Though I wouldn't be there to get dinner until the following night, I could hardly contain my excitement to share the news and to finally try them for myself. After a long day of hiking, we came into town and saw the trailer set up at Austin's Chuckwagon (side note: Austin's is rad, and don't sleep on the bakery/deli in the back for breakfast or packed lunches!). It was a little after they had opened, but the place was already buzzing. We ordered two burgers and some fries, and waited somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 minutes before getting our order. First of all, they're gorgeous. But more important is the taste. Was the Yelp ranking going to hold up? Was it worth all the praise and attention? Yes. Yes. Yes. Folks, this is the real deal. This is legit. And though I worry that you get too hyped up and expect too much, I'm saying it now, this is definitely one of the best burgers in America. Consider this: the owner's background is in fine dining. From Forage to Communal to sous chef-ing on Iron Chef, Luke has years and years of experience in some of the state's top kitchens. Sunny (wife and co-owner) is delightful but you for sure get the feeling that she keeps things running and is a boss in her own right. Their neighbor is their beef supplier, and since they work directly with the rancher, they've worked closely together to grain finish the beef and find that exact perfect meat to make your burger melt in your mouth. Add in the fact that they lovingly take care of so many details themselves (get their homemade pickles, they were absolutely one of the things our group talked about once we got back to camp) and you have all the ingredients for success. The menu is small--they do burgers, and they do them well--so see what strikes your fancy. The basic burger was really good, but holy cow that mushroom burger was lights out, ridiculously juicy and good. The beef flavor shines through, but you get the onions, mushrooms, and cheese funk all coming to visit your taste buds, too. Others ordered the mac n' cheese burger and that looked incredible as well. Our group of 11 was blown away. Had they been open for lunch on the day we came back through town we would have stopped here again. One of our crew ordered and ate a burger, and then ordered another to go. Because you're supporting such handcrafted effort, expect to pay a bit more for a burger, but know it's worth it, and considering you're in a small town where tourism can drive up prices, you're getting a really affordable meal all things considered. I kept my burger simple and had a double bacon cheeseburger minus the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Of course, I kept the fry sauce in it. I was hooked after just one bite and could honestly say that Capitol Burger was one of our highlights of our visit to Capitol Reef National Park. My only regret was that I didn't get an extra burger for the road. Prices per burger ranges from $6.99 to $10.99. Extra patty is only $2.75. Make it a combo for $2.99 more. We were on our way in to Capitol Reef National Park, and after a long day of driving, we were hoping for something cool and local (aka not McDonald's or Taco Bell) but still good with the kids. We found this spot on Yelp among the other spots in Torrie, and we definitely made the right choice. The burgers were on point and the slaw was awesome.
