Capitol Closet Design is great. My wife and I could not be more pleased with the total redo of our 10'x20' closet. The process went smoothly from start to finish, at each and every stage. Lynn gave us terrific advice when we went to the Tysons showroom, then worked with us on the design with multiple options that provided choices we hadn't even realized were possible. After settling on what would be done the back office support -- contract, scheduling, follow-up, payment -- was clear and easy. The work crews -- the initial crew that did nearly all of the job, and the follow-up crew to add valet hangers -- were fantastic. Courteous, pleasant, efficient, they delivered great results. Terrific work at a reasonable price. Definition of value. It's not exactly what we had in mind; rather, the finished closet is way better than what we had in mind. Anyone looking to redo their closets can drive themselves crazy getting multiple estimates. Or they can make their lives easy by going to Capitol Closet Design and asking for Lynn. read more

I was SO excited to design my closet for the first time in my life when I came to Capitol Closets. Unfortunately, over the course of weeks, Capitol Closet took my joy and turned it into stress. The first thing I asked for was their availability so that I could have my closet done before moving into my new home. We confirmed a date five weeks out and I let them know that I was delaying my move in order to have the closet done first to avoid having to empty my closet later. Two weeks before our scheduled date, they called to tell me they did not hold the spot because I did not provide a deposit (which they never requested), and booked someone else. I could not move my move-in date further or reschedule the movers. For days they tried to convince me to let them do my closet DURING my move, insisting that it would just take 1-2 hours and they would be done before the movers got there. I contacted them every day until we were able to secure an early time, the day before I moved. The week before our scheduled date, they called me to move the date again. Thankfully, the date worked out because despite their claims, it took 8 hours + a little extra time the next day as they ordered the wrong mirror size for my closet as well as sawing and dust taking over my bedroom--things that could not be done while I was moving in real time. The amount of stress and advocacy it took to get this done and the flip nature with which they told me it wasn't a big deal to do it during the move (while I'm paying movers hourly), let me know that the client's schedule, stress, and happiness is not the priority for them. It's outrageous that while paying thousands of dollars, you still have to beg them to follow through. On top of it all, in the designing of my closet, I had to go through several iterations, asking them to include and remove the same items multiple times before I saw the design and pricing I desired. Unfortunately, they removed a feature that I did not ask them to remove (and they did not mention as something they removed), and I did not notice it in the final designs. So there is a small feature that is not included in my closet that I wanted. It is worth noting however that the guys that did my closet were incredible--they were thoughtful about cleaning up, communicating with me, and taking care not to damage the walls and floors; and they did a really nice job with the closet itself. But the experience leading up to it was not worth it. I was hoping to do another closet in my home, but I'll have to go to another company. It's just not worth all the self-advocacy and stress, especially not when you're paying so much. read more

I worked with Capital Closets a few years ago to transform a spare bedroom into a closet/dressing room. The project was extensive. The closet is absolutely stunning!! Capital Closets brought a lot to the table in the design and construction of the closet. I am very pleased with the outcome. It's actually a dream closet. Previously, I rated Capital Closets a one star, not because of the quality of the work, but because of some issues around follow up / follow through. We have since resolved the issues which stemmed mostly from a miscommunication. If I was rating them solely on the quality of the closet it would be 5 stars hands down. But, because we did have an issue that went on for a little while, I think a 3-star rating best reflects my total experience. I should, however, add that the crew who worked in my house was delightful, always respectful and a pleasure to work with. read more

I just had my closet done by Michael at Capitol Closet Design and I cannot say enough positive things. It is way beyond my expectations and is absolutely stunning. Michael did a design that gave me everything I wanted and more. The installers were courteous, on time, efficient and got the job done in one day. I did call other places and get estimates and designs. None of them compared to what Michael prepared for me. And he was more reasonable than any other company. What more can anyone ask for? The materials are all top-notch too. Nothing cheap! All in all there is nothing more I could have asked for. I will certainly be calling them again if I have another project. read more

I do not recommend this place. Given the price, the quality should be better for regular cabinets and they upsell you on things you don't need. After I signed the contract, I was upsold on an addition to the closet. I agreed, because I thought it would extend the closet shelves. It only connected the top shelf. For one foot of a connection, it's not worth $160. I don't know why the sales woman would do that. They replaced the closet I had in place, and their replacement was shit. It doesn't even reach the bottom of the shelf area (make sure you look closely at their design - it's just really cheap). Mine was SO much nicer, and they removed it. I told them to give me the $160 back off of the over $2400 purchase price, but they refused. All I wanted was them to remove their crappy extension (the upsell item) and replace it with the much nicer closet I had originally. The closet they installed with the original contract was nice, but it's probably not worth the high price. After I bought it, I learned that I could have saved much money if I had shopped around. Moreover, they are not coordinated, as the salewoman and the manager/receptionist Laura do not seem to communicate well. Laura would constantly contact me for credit card or other information when I had already given the saleswoman my information. They're just not very professional. read more

After consulting with several closet companies in northern VA, I had a small dressing room/office designed and installed by Capitol Closet Design that was built to our specifications. It turned out beautifully. We had a good experience from our first meeting with Mike Avjean, who helped with the design, with Laura in the office who supports scheduling, and through the installation process. We had an immediate response and fix when we noticed a small issue. As a result, we called Mike back, at Capitol Design to redesign a walk in closet in the master bedroom. I can't believe the extra storage the redesign offered in the same space! Again, we are pleased beyond expectations about the work, functionality, and how it looks. read more

We have had several moves and used "closet design/organizers" previously, Capital was stellar. The design was right on, closet and garage cabinets are excellent. Quality of material super. I just had my master closet redone. The results are incredible! It took about 1 1/2 weeks from signing the contract to install. The installers were very friendly, fast and efficient. Came on a Wednesday and knocked out the old closet. I painted on Thursday, and they installed in a couple hours on Friday. I have a smaller closet but they were able to work some of the bells and whistles in- jewelry drawer, a safe to lock up personal belongings, shoe storage galore for me! My husband has his own shelves and cubbies. My only complaint is that I was told this new design would get me about a foot more hanging space. But when the closet went in, the design was slightly altered and my angled corners that were included in the design are not included in what was installed. So after measuring it appears I have the same amount of hanging space, if not a few inches less. But all in all, if I ever have the money again to splurge on organizing, I would definitely hire this company again to do our other closets and the garage!! They were great! read more

Capital Closets did a good job creating a walk in closet out of the bedroom next to my Master Bedroom. It was an expensive project - I chose dark woods, glass doors, a chest of dressers with granite top in the center. I was happy for a couple years but then the top drawer of the granite-topped dresser literally fell apart. The front fell off. I was within warranty and the job was five figures, so on April 23, I contacted Capital Closets to speak with Ms. Pam Taylor, who designed and sold me the closet for help regarding the repair. They did not send a repairman until June 7th and he did not even repair it. He removed and took the entire drawer with him. Since then I have been calling and emailing to find out when it will be repaired and returned. Pam Taylor stopped responding and I was passed along to Mr. Jim Yates. He has been equally non-responsive. It has now been more than 6 weeks since they sent someone to remove the broken dresser drawer. Have not heard from Capital Closets since June 13th when I emailed for a status report and did not get an answer. Today is July 16th - more than one month later and I am having to follow up again. WARNING TO POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS: You will get lots of attention and probably a nice enough looking closet (although beware that the wood laminate is poorly applied and will peel up and the dressers are very cheaply made). Capital Closet Design charges a lot of money but my experience has been that if you have a problem, good luck getting them to stand by their work or treat you with any customer service courtesy. I am writing this review because when I saw they only had 1 review and it was only 1 star, I truly felt that was wrong and very unfair. We used Capitol Closets Design for three bedroom closets; two master bedrooms and 1 child's room. They closets were completed in January 2007. We contracted the work in October 2006. At the time I got an estimate and design from Capital and from California Closets. The quotes were about the same. I wanted to actually SEE the product before I bought it and Capital has a wonderful showroom and happy for you to see it. California had a show room but they were difficult about viewing it and it wasn't nearly as nice as Capital. Capital set up an appointment to view the showroom and whereas California said I had an appointment but took walk in customers before me and I waited. Another issue I had was the designer California sent out. He was late and not helpful or creative at all. It was sort of a what do you want attitude, not what do I think would be good. In fact he asked me if he could have the plan that Capital supplied and just price it out!!!! What the heck! I thought this crazy but gave it to him. I expected for this kind of money that the designer would come with lots of ideas and help me create a space that I loved that was functional and pretty. I felt Capital worked very hard to get my business. I also liked that the designers, Dave & Kevin, I worked with. One had 4 or 5 kids and could help me design a closet for a future baby's room. He also listened to all my personal closet needs and never directed me to buy things I didn't want or need. Ok, so it seemed like a no brainer to chose Capital, so we did. Next came getting the closets built and installed. I have to be honest in saying there were a few small issues in this area. It did seem to take long and in the end there were about 5 things not completed at correctly that they had to come back and fix. Because it was a long time ago and I can't recall them all, but my husband and I recall it was smaller things and in the end we spoke with Larry, the owner and everything was completed correctly. My closet is awesome and everyone who sees it comments it is the best closet they have ever seen. This is not a joke. Keep in mind, while I didn't go full tilt out, I did get a full length mirror door, drawers, granite counter top and some glass doors. I did not get solid wood nor back panels. I had received some unexpected money and used it to treat us with these closets. Ok, so fast forward 6 years later. We obviously use the closets everyday and I truly can say we love them. But more importantly I was now having a couple of issues. So I called Capital and Lynn answered the phone. I explained that a hinge had come lose from the mirrored door and some plastic brackets broke of the glass part of the glass doors. I also explained I now had a 2 year old at home and concerned these could be safety issues and needed them fixed. I also said I had no idea whether they were covered under the warranty but either way needed them fixed. This call took place on a Friday about 2pm. Lynn immediately volunteered to come right over and try and fix the items, based on my description or at least access the problem and come back the next day. He arrived about an hour later, he stopped at Home Depot on the way, and fixed everything I needed fixed right on the spot. I was beyond pleased. He was very pleasant and well mannered and patient. I was not charged anything for these fixes. This is a small family business and maybe they are not perfect all the time, but I have found them to be honest, and willing to do the right thing. I am happy with the quality and design of the work and would use them again. I recommend you consider Capital if you are having a nice closet done, get an estimate from them and one or two other companies and make your decision. FYI, there is a second review on this site that is 5 star but for some reason filtered. I have no idea why only the bad review shows. read more
