Compared to other optometrists I've gone to, where they're very eager to sell you on something, this office clearly cares a lot about the happiness and comfort of their customers. Went to get meta glasses. And they don't have any means to check my insurance even though I told them I can call them and get them connected. They lost a business for over 1000 dollars. I'm not sure about the multiple attempts you made. I did get one voicemail but did not return the call because I did not want to spend anymore time on this. However, I will provide this final post as feedback. This is just my opinion, do with it what you want. 1. I used to get itemized papers bills at the time of order so I review line by line what was being ordering. I'm not sure how feasible it is to expect the customer to sign in to a portal after the fact and review the order. If I was given a itemized bill that was reviewed with me and I signed it saying I reviewed it, I would concede and keep the order or pay for the return. You should keep the signed bill and send the signed copy to the customer's email as a record. 2. The optician was very defensive when I detailed specifics of our conversation during the dispute. I able to give the product specific color code and asked how I would know that. The response I got was that I could have Googled it. Yes, the return was honored but that response didn't leave me with good feelings about the situation. The optician clearly felt she got the order right but I felt otherwise and there is no real way to challenge either view. 3. I received an upcharge to a bill from 3 month earlier with no supplemental paperwork showing what the insurance company did. It was a single line saying insurance charge. Note that I already paid for the bill and claimed the FSA. Based on the previous experience with the optician and the fact that the charge was identical to the return fee, I naturally thought it was retaliatory. Why not provide supplemental paperwork or wait until I make a return appointment to notify and explain to me in person why there is an additional insurance fee? Why send the charge by mail with no supplemental info + FINANCE CHARGE and risk possible miscommunication, confusion, or resentment? 4. I know you mentioned that your team has 20 years of billing experience (which is a very defensive comment), I actually took time out of my day to make a trip to your office to discuss the bill. I printed out my old bill and the FSA claim I made. I was just told it was an insurance claim issue and it happens all the time. There was no attempt to further justify the charge, no attempt eliminate the finance charge, or attempt to provide store credit to appease the customer. Nothing. So I simply paid it and moved on. I will give you guys the benefit of the doubt and say this was miscommunication but I believe there is work to be done on your end to prevent these situations. I believe customer perception, justified or not, can easily dictate whether they stay or go. I will give you guys some credit for reaching out and upgrade you to 3 stars but unfortunately, I have taken my family elsewhere for their eyecare needs. read more

Nice little eye care center with good choices of glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses. I have used the facility for few years now. The front desk staff is helpful in picking up the glasses or contact lenses. They also message you when glasses are ready. They check for insurance coverage and advise you what's covered and what not. Note - Eye photo is sometimes not covered by insurance so I normally approve it only if covered by insurance. Same with glasses - I do not order antiglare and anti scratch etc only if needed. It's not so worth for glasses you would change every year. read more

We've been going to Capitol Eye Care for years, and I recommended it to my father - it was nothing special, but was fine. They messed up his order twice - and he was called to go in to pick up (incorrect) glasses twice. This third time, he got the right glasses but the nose bridge broke on his way home. He turned right back around and asked them if they could fix it. They said they could not because it belonged to him once it left the building. He will have to drive to Hayward to have that part soldered back on. read more

Went for my daughter's eye checkup today. When we booked the appointment we asked for a doctor who has experience with kiddo on special needs. And we were told all doctors here can do. At appointment Doctor enters room and straightaway went to ask my daughter to look at the letter while doctor started looking at her eye with other equipment. Felt very cold and unfriendly. My daughter tried her best to follow what she is asking. But doctor kept saying she is not following and I can't do her check. This shows lack of experience and patience to deal with kids. Latest 1/11/23: 1. Digging into our claims in both 2021 and 2022, we found that both were charged extra in office than what we supposed to from the claims. (~$200 or so total). 2. HI Lens were charged for both of us with prescription under ~-1.5. ($76 for each) 3. Lens/Frame returned for refund took another two months and still have not received fro my bank. New Patient, Avoid this place at all cost! Existing Patients, Please go through your claim documents and make sure you were charged correctly in office. read more

I wanted to highlight how well patients are treated here. A specific example is by Jessica. I had run out of contact lenses and she went through the trouble of going through all the stock to find a few matching pairs for me so I could wear contacts for a few more days while I wait for new boxes to arrive. That is meticulous and shows so much care for patients! Dr. Karin Rardin is one of the most caring and detailed doctors I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She went through great lengths to make sure I got the best prescription possible to help me see as well as possible. The experience overall was also really good, it's all very streamlined and you get good support by the many workers there throughout. My only pain point was that although my glasses were cleaned, no one offered to replace the nose pads on my glasses, which I was used to being offered in other places. The nose pads are oily and I used to love getting them cleaned/replaced as the frames then feel brand new. I was also told that there's no warranty when ordering new lenses for frames I already own, so it really feels like they are pushing that you have to buy a new frame. I'd appreciate more flexibility in this area. read more

This was my first visit to Capitol Eye Care. I had selected them from the long list of providers in network for my insurance because the doctors were all from the UC Berkeley School of Optometry. I filled out the needed new patient forms online before I went in for my appointment. The process was very smooth and everyone was wearing a mask during my time there. One customer forgot to put her mask back up after lowering it for something and she was very politely reminded, addressed by name and the staff walked across the room to remind her rather than calling to her, to put her mask back on. She had just forgotten. I learned that I had the option to have photos taken of the interior of my eye with a special instrument rather than having my eyes dilated. I was warned that if my insurance didn't cover that it would be an extra $39. Well, I was thrilled to not have to have my eyes dilated! It turned out that my insurance did cover it, but I would gladly have paid because I hate those wasted hours when you have to limit the things you can do waiting for your vision to get back to normal. A technician did the first three instrument tests - peripheral vision, glaucoma (tonometer) and the special camera for interior eye images. I didn't have any long wait times. Dr. Liao performed the usual eye chart tests and corrective lenses tests and then went over the photos of my eyes' interiors with me. She did a wonderful job of explaining everything she found. Then they asked if I wanted to purchase new glasses. I did. It was time for new frames. I found they had an excellent selection of frames available; a wide variety of brands, frame materials, lenses shapes and sizes, with the price attached to each frame. Sandra was helping me. First I walked around and picked out a selection of frames to try - she gave me a box to put them in. Then she looked over what I found and suggested a few more to try. I tried on all of the frames with my mask on and rejected some of them. Then she suggested I take them outside with a large hand-held mirror she gave me to try them on with my mask off. That was really a good idea as it definitely made a difference in how I felt about some of them. All of the frames go back in the box to be cleaned before the next customer tries them on. All of the equipment was also constantly cleaned in all areas I visited. Sandra totaled up the price, which came to over $800. The frames I chose were about $230 and I have progressive polycarbonate lenses with anti-reflection coating. She explained that my insurance covered my exam but not my glasses. I told her I thought I had coverage for the glasses so she went and checked and found me in the system. (I have coverage through my Blue Cross/Anthem supplemental coverage, but they subcontract out to another company for the eye care.) That brought my glasses down to about $550. Much better. I am putting the amounts in this review because it is good to keep up with the prices if you only go in every couple to three years or more. You can of course take your prescription for your lenses elsewhere and probably get a cheaper price, but they will stand behind the warranties here and I like to support local small businesses. It's always your choice whether you buy your glasses from your doctor's office or another provided. My new glasses are expected to be ready in about two weeks. I plan to return to Capitol Eye Care for my future eye exams. read more

They do not do what they say, I am a first-time visitor here and I don't know anything about glasses and how they fit surprisingly nobody helped me and I chose the wrong glass frames when I went home with them after about 1 day I realized they are not perfect and are too big, they kept falling, I told them I am not happy with the glasses, it is mentioned here they will have 60 days of warranty and when I told them about my problem they told me they cannot help me! I would give them a minus 5 stars if possible. Our family has been with capitol Eye care for 25 years. Recently my husband who has been unwell for 6 months (no diagnosis) started complaining to pressure and pain in the ey and loosing vision. I called Capitol eye care for an appt on Thursday and got appt for follwing Wednesday. When issue kept getting worse i called for an urgent appt and got earliest appt for Monday (this was on Friday). At this point my husband had lost 70% vision in one eye. I explained the urgency to the receptionist bit was told: "I can give you an appt. only if there is an opening, else you should go to the ER". Really!!! after being your patient for 25% you can not make an exception for an emergency. I called Sutter health and after explaining the urgency got a same day appt even though the Dr. had a full schedule. The doctor found serios issues with his eye and sent him to the hospital. Thankfully timly treatment prevented permanent blindness. I dont understand if a new Dr. could make an exception for him even though she was fully booked, why could't Capitol Eye care do it? ER visits can result in significant weight times which my husband could not afford. His vision loss was worsening by the hour!!! None of us will be going back to this horrible center again. read more

I had bad experience here. I was 15 minutes late for my kids appointment. They did not see us. When I started asking question about the late/ no show fee, they started becoming rude. They forced us to pay a no show fee of $50, even though I was standing right there within the appointment window. Also, we had no notification saying that there will be a fee for a late/ no show. A week before that when I went for my own eye check-up, I had to wait for more than 30 minutes to start getting my check up. it took them more than 90 minutes after that to complete it. I can understand a wait time, but I can't understand no adjustment if you are a little bit late on the other hand. read more

I found Capitol Eye Care through my insurance portal, and I saw that they had good reviews. They did not disappoint. My optometrist was very friendly, efficient, and explained everything to me. The glasses I got were very cute. I'd post a picture of them, but as I usually do, I have lost them somewhere in my house. They seem to have a steady flow of people, but do not make you wait long, and they take a lot of different insurance. I'll be returning there for my next exam. read more

Capital eye care used to be very good and that is why I chose them but recently they are nothing but a bunch of pushy salespeople trying to sell you frames and other retail stuff. It is literally becoming a riff-off station. They even trick you into multiple appointments so they can sell you stuff and make a little more money out you while they waste your time with back and forth appointments. Recently every time I visit them, the first thing they do is try to add an additional $35 for dilating picture instead of drops which is really unnecessary as the Dr. doesn't even use it half the time. Next, they spend all their time trying to sell you products and they make sure NOT to give you your PD values so you could not order accurate glasses anywhere else unless you retake your PD again which is usually not as accurate as the one done by the Dr. So they have all these tricks to keep making more money off of you. Today, I had an appointment with my Dr., took time off from my work and arrived even 20 mins before my appointment. They kept showing me frames and other products and when I showed no interest in purchasing anything, they told me that today's appointment was only for me to choose frames. I am like, I specifically made an appointment for a contact lens prescription and did NOT express any interest in purchasing frames! with is going on here? The lady just casually brushed me off saying well, that is all I had scheduled for you so you have to come another day to see the Dr. They didn't even TRY to fix their mistake and offer me to wait so I could see the Dr. whom btw was standing right there at the reception and didn't even say a word. They are all a bunch of rude idiots and I will never ever go there again. Sadly I had referred 5 of my family and co workers to them and I talked to them as well. They all had similar stories to share. So we are all changing our eye Dr. THIS PLACE REALLY, REALLY, SUCKS! If you like pushy sales people go there otherwise, save yourself a headache. read more
