My son recently became interested in wrestling, and this gym offers the MOCCA program for both boys…read moreand girls of all ages. Practices are held three evenings a week, and you can either pay per session or purchase a monthly pass. For first-time participants, they provide wrestling shoes, but if your child plans to continue, it's definitely worth investing in a pair. The facility itself is impressive. The building is enormous, with three full-size wrestling mat areas, a raised wrestling ring, a large fitness area with equipment, locker rooms, and an uncomfortable seating area for parents. They also have a water bottle refill station, which is much appreciated because the kids work incredibly hard. My son was absolutely exhausted by the end of practice. The class structure, however, could be improved for beginners. Everyone starts together with about 15 minutes of warm-ups, followed by a demonstration of a wrestling move. After that, the younger wrestlers move to another mat and pair off to practice. One challenge for first-time families is that it's difficult to identify who the instructors are. Having coaches wear identifiable shirts would make it much easier to know who to approach with questions. I also felt that the techniques introduced were fairly advanced for newcomers. It would be helpful to start with simpler fundamental moves while spending more time explaining the purpose and mechanics behind each technique. Every 10 minutes or so, a whistle brings everyone back together for another demonstration before they rotate back to practicing. This cycle repeats several times before open wrestling begins. For beginners, I would probably recommend sitting out the open wrestling portion. Wrestlers are paired rather freely, and it can be overwhelming for someone attending their first few practices. Overall, I think the program would benefit from offering a dedicated beginner class before introducing new wrestlers into the regular sessions. That said, one thing that really stood out was how welcoming and encouraging the older participants were. Many of them took the time to help the younger wrestlers learn the techniques, creating a supportive atmosphere that made the experience a positive one despite the steep learning curve.

My son has been attending the Little Dragons (ages 4-6yo) class here at American Dragon 3X per week…read moresince the fall of 2015. We started him off at another martial arts academy, but quickly moved him here after my husband did some research and found this place. The style they practice is Jeet Kune Do. Since our son began attending classes, we have noticed improvement in his confidence and self-control/discipline. He also is respectful to his elders, calling them sir & m'am, which I'm pretty sure he learned from coming here too...they always stress making sure the students have eye contact when being spoken to and that they always shake hands and say "thank you sir/m'am". They have a monthly mantra (or lesson) to teach children about confidence, integrity, perseverance (never giving up), etc. Our son seems to really enjoy attending classes, and is so proud every time he graduates to a new belt (he just got his 3rd - orange). We love that this is a family owned business. All of the staff takes the time to learn everyone's names and they are all really friendly and personable, not only with the students but also the parents who come to watch class each day. They happily listen to any of the concerns we ever have with our son and his behavior, or anything we need to address, which is very rare. American Dragon offers summer camp, after care, and camp on days when Broward County schools are closed. They offer classes for children, all the way up to adults. Sifu Helena even teaches womens' self-defense courses every so often. They also have gatherings a few times per year (a fall pot-luck and Halloween party just to name a few), which is always a fun time for the students/kids to get together and play. Their costume Halloween party is great! Oh, and they also offer "Parent's Night Out" every month or so, which is great for parents to get a little date night for a few hours on a Friday night :-). Anyway, we definitely recommend coming here if you're looking to enroll your child into a martial arts program. They offer a 6-week intro course I believe (which is what we did before signing him up full-time). And you renew every 6 months (or year perhaps).

Amazing place to help kids become responsible, respectful and confident. The techniques used here…read moreare not just "fighting skills". They teach respect and responsibility in and out of the classroom. Even the ability to test for the next level (belt) is predicated on performance in school, home and class. The parents and their teacher have to sign for the testing! The kids have a seemingly good time in class. They are focused and there is a very even distribution of attention from the teachers to each student so no one student is left out. The owners (Sifu Helana and Sifu Neil) are both readily available and ALWAYS take the time to make each person feel important and address any concerns or questions - no matter how trivial. As a former student, I'm happy and proud to say my children are now students here! ASSA!!!!!!

I will start of by saying Taekwondo Athletic Center is my second home. After having experienced…read moreseveral taekwondo academies and coaches, I commit to making a 27 mile commute to attending TAC because that is how good the taekwondo program and coach are. I was pushed to join taekwondo as a kid even though I resisted, and little did I know I'd learn so many things that translate into the real world and it'd become a way of life/lifestyle for me. Master Juan Catalan is an experienced taekwondo coach, life coach, mentor, and he is a father as well. He is professional, respectful, and communicates effectively with parents and students. His teachings have not just made me physically stronger and have helped me overcome limits that I never knew were possible, but his teachings have also helped me become mentally stronger and overcome obstacles in the real world. He teaches his students respect, discipline, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, and so many other things. The best part is he teaches his students how to translate all of these values, concepts, and characteristics into the real world so that his students, like myself, can grow to be strong and intellectual leaders. He encourages his students to be humble, work hard, and pursue their passions. He is capable of helping even the youngest of kids. Master Catalan also uses psychology to help students progress in their athletic and mental performance. With his guidance and your commitment, he can also help in molding you to become a competitive taekwondo athlete in both sparring (combat) and poomsae (forms). Most taekwondo coaches specialize in one thing, but he is extremely skilled and experienced in both core areas of taekwondo. Foot work techniques and drills are essential to taekwondo and Coach Catalan is always coming up with new and creative ways to help me and other students improve foot work. His classes are very unique and never repetitive unlike many other taekwondo programs and classes. He always encourages his students to have fun versus applying hardcore pressure and force, so students react very well to this method. He also doesn't do contracts unlike most taekwondo schools and has great pricing. Another distinction is his equipment is constantly replaced, does constant renovations, and he is extremely hygienic. So meanwhile most taekwondo academies smell like humidity and feet, his academy is spotless and odorless. Also keep in mind, he has the key to help you succeed in whatever you want to achieve, but he can't do the work for you.

They truly know how to take care of the kids and provide them with a great learning environment. Although we decided to leave to try a new experience at another place, we truly miss Jiu-Jitsu 4 Life. The coaches -- FILIPO SOFIA and CAIO-- are amazing and dedicated professionals. My kids learned so much during their time there. In 2025, Davi competed at the American Pan Kids while representing Jiu-Jitsu 4 Life, and it was such a proud moment for our family.
