Wasn't too shabby. Dozen raw oysters to start off with. Can't really ruin raw oysters. Only with too much cocktail sauce, thanks dad. Then gumbo. Was actually really good. A little runny but was still really good. I ended up putting a crap ton of pepper in it but that's just because that's how I prefer my gumbo. Then. The 10 fried shrimp and tilapia special. Yes I realize this is a CRAP ton of food but my dad was paying. Haha. Spanish is preferred but not required. We ate at the boat bar. Which seems to be with the locals do. Would I go back. Yeah. Sure. Stopped in here after a movie. We were DYING for oysters (well I was dying, my girl just wanted some greasy food and a michelada). First off, this place IS a dive, but a fun one. It was easy access (just south of 34th), even with all the problems with 290. The bar is in the "boat", while the tables are one the "deck". I recommend sitting at the bar, you can watch the guys shuck the oysters. NOW, i am not a raw oyster fan so I did not order. We got boiled shrimp and delicious shrimp & crap stuffed in jalapenos then fried. WONDERFUL. The only that would have been better if the whole thing was wrapped in bacon. :0 So i got my fried oyster platter and she got a special of fried soft shell and shrimp, but subbed with fried scallops. It was greasy, but good. While we were eating and drinking I was asking the shucker the difference between the oysters they had. He explained they have a different taste. He convinced me to get a three pack with the gulf oyster and two different Chesapeake bay versions. I took them, bigger than my last. I will personally stay away from raw oysters, unless it is in a shot glass with vodka and a splash of hot sauce. The crowd was lively and all appeared to know each other. Captain Benny's was stop 3 out of 4 last night on a crazy food crave run with my friends! She was craving fresh oysters after we were teased with a fried oyster appetizer at BRC just prior. I'll admit, I was teased also. It had been awhile since I had fresh raw oysters so I was excited! load'em up with horseradish, lemon, and tabaso..yumm or nice and simple with lemon! This location has tables in the area surrounding the main boat area so there is more seating. (This was good for me because my right leg is currently in a full length brace and the bar stool type seating around the boat would've been harder). According to my friend, the Murphy location only has seating around the boat area. I first noticed the bright lighting and red and white checkered picnic table covers. Cute..homey. We got there about 25 minutes before closing and the three of us ordered 2 dozen oysters to share. My friend was disappointed and said it wasn't fresh. Our other friend and myself agreed that it was good enough for us. Neither of us had oysters in while and it wasn't enough for me to say I didn't like it. There were a few grainy bits with one or two bigger pieces of shell/rock I had to spit out and two out of a dozen were kind of yellowish, slimy, and broken looking so we didn't eat those. I would agree that those didn't look fresh, but as far as the taste in ones I did eat, were fine. Some were small and others were larger. I ate the largest one that was literally 3 inches long and about 2 inches wide! Four stuffed shrimp that were over cooked on the outside and mush in the inside, 3 pieces of fried catfish that were mushy underneath, unseasoned cold fries, little hard "hush puppies, and "homemade" tarter sauce for almost $40. First off, I like the new parking lot and the addition of the back patio seating. Second, food was better than in years past. Went on a Friday night about 7p, place was comfortablely busy. The shrimp was very flavorful but the "jumbo" were small for the price of $19.99 for 12 jumbo shrimp, fries, Cole slaw, and garlic toast. My husband had the soft shelled crab po boy with fries for $11.50 (two crabs come on the po boy). He also added 3 jumbo shrimp for $3.99. This place is all about fresh seafood and casual atmosphere. This is my second time to dine here again the meal was great. The first time here I came with my wife and we started off with oysters on the 1/2 shell and the were cold, fresh, and delicious. My wife had stuffed flounder and I had stuffed redfish which I am having again it was so good. Both fish were fresh, moist, and the crab and shrimp stuffing was perfectly prepared and had great flavor. You can find seafood at several restaurants in Houston but you would be hard pressed to find one that delivers the goods at such a reasonable price. read more

Its one of the only places you can find fresh catfish and the oysters are top notch for NO MONEY. seriously you could come here with your hunny and eat oysters all night and walk out feeling like you ate an expensive meal and still have money in your pocket. The best things to try are the hush puppies, specials every week, and the michelads. Everything that is fried is so lightly fried and the batter is really unique and delicious you wont want to miss it. I've always wanted to try this particular location because I live in the area now! My partner has never been before, so I was excited to take her. When we arrived we saw eaten crawfish on the patio table. A guy looked out of the kitchen door & the closed it back. As we entered we saw no one until we looked to the far left; there were two workers eating & wrapping silverware at the same time. They welcomed us, but didn't get up until we found an area to seat ourselves which was not cleaned. One of the workers came with menus and placed them on the dirty bar and walked away. We looked at each other for a second and decided to leave because we didn't feel welcomed! No one never stopped us as we left and when we walked out the crawfish was still on the table. I've never felt as unwanted at a place of business like I did here. I will continue to patronize the Captain Bennys on Main & Braeswood. The customer service there is AWESOME! read more

Not sure why unless they got a bad shipment of shrimp or maybe the shrimp was fried twice. Either way we could not eat them and will not be returning any time soon. Blown away! Stumbled upon this place while looking for a place to eat off the hwy before heading back to Austin. If I could give 3 and a half stars I would. I didn't have very high expectations going to Captain Benny's, but they surpassed. First, I can get oysters on the half shell for $9.99 which is a great deal. Although I don't feel their gumbo is authentic, I still enjoy the taste. It is more broth than roux, but still tasty. Their poboys are always good, but this time I didn't want something friend, so I tried their grilled scallops. They were cooked slightly longer than I would like, but the flavor was very good. Gumbo came out and took a big spoonful tasted good, second spoonful has a long brown hair in it. So show the server and he doesn't say anything just takes it back, no sorry you had a hair in your food. Come back with one from "a new batch" um yeah doubt it, no thanks, still no sorry. Long time customer (6 years) was told that I can't substitute stuffed shrimp on an appetizer for shrimp diablo. Even offered to pay extra. They have been doing this for me for a long time but the manager felt it was not acceptable even with an extra charge. Came here with a group of coworkers for lunch. I had he stuffed shrimp. They were fairly large and weren't bad. I just wasn't blown away. The hush puppies were good, they had a little bit of a spice to them. One of my coworkers mentioned that the gumbo was amazing. Another coworker was disappointed in their chicken tender meal because it almost looked like a kids meal. Another coworker said the fried catfish and fried shrimp plate was bland. The worst part of everything was that they some how totally forgot one of my coworkers orders. So everyone had their food except for her and she had to wait an extra 20 min. for them to bring out her meal. We asked if she would get any kind of discount for the mishap but the waitress wouldn't budge. My husband and I ordered a large seafood platter at Captain Benny's. It had scallops, shrimp, fish, stuffed crab and oysters with fries if I remember correctly. Well when we started to taste everything, it all tasted the same, like old fish. I don't know if it was all fried up together in old oil used to fry fish... I don't know. There are a few oyster bars in Houston like Captain Benny's... Shaped like a boat with bar seating around. What sets Benny's apart is it's additional table seating that is ideal for larger parties and those not wanting to sit in the bar format.
