One of my favorite spots in The Heights. The restaurant has a cozy feel with décor that makes you feel like you're relaxing in someone's living room. Even though I've been here once before, I wanted to try it again and give the other menu items a try. I wasn't too impressed the first time, and this visit certainly confirmed my initial thoughts. For La Lucha's Happy Hour, you get a choice between 2 types of oysters ($1.50 each). These were great - do this on a weekday before 6pm and you should be able to grab a table without a reservation. Barely even after we started eating the oysters, the waitress was already asking if we wanted to order more, instead of allowing us to just enjoy our food without interruptions. The menus they gave at our table were inconsistent and had different menu items. I had to ask for clarification if the redfish was on the menu since it wasn't on two of the three menus given to us. So, quality control was a miss. Rest of the menu... is limited. Everything was so greasy, from the fried chicken, the redfish, and shrimp tacos. * Red fish with pecans - 6/10. The fish did not taste like it was seasoned with salt. It was well cooked, not dry at all, but it lacked any sort of seasoning aside from the butter and pecans on top. * Shrimp Tacos - 4/10. I think I prefer Taco Bell over this one. The shell was greasy, not crisp (felt like it was stale), and I was confused with the combination of American Cheese and shrimp. They also added hot sauce or spicy salsa in the tacos - so a warning if you can't handle spice (not mentioned on the menu). * Half Fried Chicken - 5/10. The chicken was moist. Been here once before and it was quite dry, so I'm glad this was cooked well. You get 2 thighs, a wing, and a drumstick (4pc). Again, there was a lack of any seasoning on the chicken itself & the exterior. Sadly, the sauce that we picked was not the best either - oyster mayo. It would've been nice to try the others, but the half order came with one sauce. The seasonal jam that was available was the peach jam. It went well with the biscuits (half order comes with 2 biscuits, any extra is $1.50). For my people who get cold in restaurants, I would recommend bringing a light jacket since they turn the A/C up. read more

Nice ambiance! The fried chicken was fried very well however did lack some flavor. We enjoyed the sauce variety that we were offered. Our favorite was the middle one I believe it was honey garlic. The biscuits were fluffy but we especially loved the homemade jam! I'm still thinking about that. Other items we got were deviled eggs, oysters, and snapper collars. I would skip snapper collars and oysters (they were on small side) . All of our drinks were fantastic! Carajillo and margs highly recommended. The soft serve is a must at the end!! This seems to be a favorite spot in Houston. We found this place on Yelp and wanted a nice dinner for just the two of us. First free valet made it so much easy to just get dropped at the front and enjoy our dinner. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to accommodate us on the list. We waited at the bar and had a some drinks and enjoyed their local oysters. They were fresh and delicious. Diego our bartender was very helpful and friendly with great conversation. We made it to the dining area and was greeted with our very friend server who also helped us with our meal selections. We went with their specialty: fried chicken. It was very crispy yet the meat was very tender. We enjoyed the various dipping sauces which were all very different but very tasty. We also had some grilled shrimp and collard greens. Heard about this place on IG and I am so glad I stopped in. I narrowly missed happy hour but the pricing wasn't too bad at all. I sat at the bar but there is a full dining room and a gorgeous patio. The whole restaurant is really lush with a classic luxury coastal vibe. My bartender was super nice and since I was not crazy hungry, I kept it simple and got deviled eggs and the biscuits. The biscuits were AMAZING! 10/10 would recommend for sure. I liked the deviled eggs as well. This place is big on raw oysters so it does have a faint fishy smell but not overwhelming. Everything was very clean and especially the restrooms which I always check for. My one regret from my time here is that I was so caught up in the experience that I didn't take more pictures! I hadn't heard of this restaurant until I came here with a group and I'm so glad I did! The interior is bustling and the space is used impressively, appearing full but not over crowded. The decor is charming and eclectic and classy. Our waiter was amazing and very attentive! The outside dining area has dirt not grass or turf, so if you don't mind your shoes and feet getting dirty and it being over 100 degrees in Houston ‍. The service was sufficient. The first time I came here, I'm sad to say was two years ago with some friends that lived in the neighborhood, and I'd yet to make it back since then. This place to me is all it was the first time and more and I need to make this a regular stop! We came out for dinner to celebrate a friend and made a reservation online. As I pulled into the parking lot, valet is available, which is nice when it's dark out to not have to look for parking. Up on entering La Lucha, I love love love how warm and cozy the place feels. I was greeted immediately with the two hosts, that had great smiles, and a delight. I let them know I was early and would grab a bevvy at the bar while I waited for the rest of my party. The bar was packed! Rightfully so! They have a great collection of all the things, this night I was in the mood for an old fashioned. I wasn't sure which whiskey I wanted to go with and one of the servers quickly made a suggestion and said I couldn't go wrong, and he was right! Went with a Bulleit for the selection. The bartender took time and care to make the bevvy, she was super sweet, and the barstaff really seemed to have a great flow all together. I saw a little flame come from a lighter and the orange, and as she set it in front of me, you could smell the citrus flavors of the beverage! It was smooth and light. A little sweeter than I am used to, but still great for a cold night! Right as I took my first sip, my party arrived!! We were seated not too long after they arrived in a nice cozy corner of the restaurant. I think I love most about this place is I didn't feel like we were in a restaurant. The noise level was quiet, the music was great, and I just felt like we were in our own little bubble! The great thing about La Lucha is the family style eating you can do. Everything can be shared, and everything we shared!! We started off ordering the Whole Fried Chicken because we knew it would take a while to cook. From there we ordered what felt like the whole menu! -Oysters -Chowder Fries -Dumplings -RedFish -Whole Fried Chicken w/extra biscuit -Brussels Everything was brought out as it was made, which is one thing I love most about this place. I recently came here with friends to celebrate a special occasion and it has been on my list for a while (specifically for the fried chicken!) so I was super excited to come here. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation, so we waited at the bar and some in our group ordered cocktails to start the night. We were seated promptly at our reservation time and our server, Chris, was super friendly from the get-go. For some of us first-timers, we were quite inquisitive about various items on the menu, and Chris welcomed any and all questions. Great service! For food, our group put in our order the whole fried chicken first since this takes a bit longer to come out. We started out with the Shrimp & Pork Dumplings and the Blue Crab Chowder Fries. The dumplings were very flavorful and I liked the chili crisp that was spread throughout. The fries...how has anyone not thought of loading fries with clam chowder until this!? This was a fantastic combination and even though the chowder came on the side, we poured it all over the fries to enjoy. Next our order of raw oysters came out. These are gulf oysters, so not the best (or biggest) from others I've had, but the taste was on point. Since these don't come in a half-dozen or dozen, we ordered just enough so that each person in our group could try one of each oyster between two different types we agreed upon from the menu. The whole chicken came out, which was my favorite. It came out as about 12 pieces with 3 dipping sauces: a cilantro-based sauce, a mayonnaise-based sauce, and a spicy honey. My favorite of these was the cilantro-based one because of the contrast it provided to the fried chicken. The fried chicken itself was extremely crispy on the outside, very moist with plenty of juice on the inside. I was a bit skeptical at $45 for a chicken knowing that I can get a way better deal at Popeye's, but this definitely gives them a run of their money. Would totally order again. We also ordered the Redfish on the Half Shell and the brussels sprouts side. The redfish was very flavorful and I liked the pecan brown butter it was glazed with. The "half shell" is actually just half of its (cooked) skin. While the fish is bone-in and one side of the skin is still on, it was still easy to get the meat out of it. The brussels sprouts had good flavor to them but I just wish they were flash-fried for that extra crispiness. To drink, I got the You're Welcome, which is their version of a Manhattan. It was definitely boozy and the combination of bourbon and rye made for a good mixed drink. While the menu is somewhat small and I feel like we tried the highlights, I would come back to try other items like the Tuna Tostada, Vietnamese Sticky Wings, and the Pharmacy Burger. The deviled eggs topped with shrimp. So good. I would order those again without hesitation. I tried them since they were very decently priced during happy hour. Oysters are not usually my favorite, but my friend absolutely loved them so if you are an oyster person, you will be happy here. My friends had the deviled eggs which were really good! Burger was ok, the bread was kinda thin so it got soggy fast. Other friend had the oysters which she enjoyed. La Lucha is and has been one of my favorite places to come. There's so many good things this place has going for it and the key driver is their food. Along with the food, the outdoor patio is great area and the oak trees and seating really add to it. The inside has both the bar area and the general seating for the masses. What I also love about this place is it is good value for the money. On this occasion a friend of mine recently moved into town and it was his birthday and thought he and others would really appreciate the menu and I wasn't disappointed. They loved it! I would have like to order everything on the menu but we weren't so hungry that all of us could eat that much food, but we did land on getting the whole fried chicken, that served with biscuits, pickles, sauce and seasonal jam. When we arrived, we did have a short wait. The restaurant was busy, which made sense since it was the last weekend before Christmas. The tacos were GREAT- a perfect late-night bite, but not quite enough to be an entrée. I'd suggest moving them to the appetizer section or including a side. This was my first time at La Lucha, but it most certainly will not be my last! The family-friendly, yet still sleek, eatery was perfect for a Sunday brunch . I am happy that my friends and I had reservations because it was extremely busy. Thankfully, La Lucha does not put seating time limits so we were able to enjoy our book swap and take our time deciding which appetizer cocktails and entrées to order. Ultimately, I decided to order an espresso martini, the chicken and pork dumplings that had a super spicy and flavorful Szechuan sauce, and the half a bird whose skin was crispy, crunchy, and packed with so much flavor! I was shocked by how much chicken comprised a half an order, but at a $24 price point that seem to be an appropriate portion size. The biscuits that accompany the chicken would put Popeyes to shame and the jam that it was served with offer just the perfect amount of sweetness. I'd ordered a side of collard greens and they tasted like Thanksgiving. Our waitress, Taylor, was super attentive, and patient as we decided what to order; and the bus boy, Mr. Martin, was a joy to talk to as we bonded over our shared love of books. He even gave some recommendations for books we should listen to on Libby. The fact that La Lucha has tip-based valet parking made this an even more enjoyable visit because parking is extremely scarce in the area. I cannot wait to return to try some of their other entrée options. It's unfortunate that they don't have an extensive happy hour menu as their cocktail menu is quite lengthy and seems attentively curated. I've heard good things about La Lucha in the Houston Heights and went there for a friend's birthday. It was a packed house and we didn't have a reservation but we were able to be seated immediately at the bar. I have been dying to try their blue crab chowder fries but they unfortunately rotated it off of their menu less than a month before we came we ended up ordering the half fried chicken special, LA crawfish bread, shrimp and pork dumplings, and oysters. For the oysters, they have 5 special kinds and they come with cocktail sauce, pickle juice mignonette, and horseradish, as well as some crackers and hot sauce. They have an open window where you can watch a worker chuck oysters open. The oysters were decently sized, refreshing, and tasty. I then tried the shrimp and pork dumpling appetizer. It comes with a Szechuan sauce and is topped with coriander and fried onions. It's not anything crazy but I liked it for what it was. It wasn't spicy at all and I couldn't really taste a Szechuan taste. I would still eat these up though. The LA crawfish bread is a pressed po boy and comes with a parsley salad. I could kind of taste the crawfish in here but it was very faint. The half fried chicken came with biscuits, pickles, seasonal ham, and a side of sauce. We upgraded to get all 2 sauces: oyster mayo, honey sambal, and green harissa. I loved both the oyster mayo and green harissa. The mayo is more smoky and the harissa is almost like one of those cilantro based salsas. The chicken itself was above average but not crazyyy. It chicken skin has a nice crunch but some of it had too much coating. The meat itself was good but could be more juicier. The sauces are what makes it so good. Their biscuits here are also reallllly goood. I don't really care about the jam though so I just kept dipping it it in the other sauces. I would come back here for happy hour for their oysters. Wow! I don't remember the last time I ate somewhere where EVERYTHING was amazing! The food, the drinks and the service were phenomenal! We tried all 6 of their oysters on the half shell. Every one was fresh and delicious. We also had the deviled eggs. Oh my gosh! The fried shrimp on top were battered and fried to perfection! (Even better than Liberty Kitchen's deviled eggs.) Of course, we HAD to try the fried chicken. We shared the 1/2 fried chicken (breast, thigh, drumstick and wing). It takes around 20 minutes because it's freshly made (thank goodness). It was the best fried chicken I've had in quite a while. We paired the chicken with the collard greens with kimchi. Perfection! What a great combo! read more

First I would like to warn that parking here is valet only. Finding the door was a little weird as it blends in but it is literally right at the corner as you walk up from the parking. Now the food was a mixture of delicious and just ok. The oysters and tuna tostada were great. I enjoyed the different options for oysters and the tuna tostada had a wonderful flavor and just melted in your mouth. The blue crab chowder fries sounded amazing at first but as we began eating it there were two things that my friend and I agreed on. 1. It's too salty, which all the seasoning on the fries and whatever is in the cheese it's just too much. 2. The cheesy crab mixture just doesn't have a wow flavor, it's not bad but just not something to brag about. The service was decent, they didn't consistently check-in with us and would have to wait a bit for refills and our check, despite it being early and before the dinner rush. I came for brunch with some friends and had a great time. The ambiance was warm and homey, and the interior had a classic diner feel with a modern twist. The server let us know that they make everything to order and bring items out as they are ready, so they are fresh for the table. They recommended ordering multiple items because most of the dishes are meant to be shared. That being said, I felt like the portions were quite small especially considering the price. Fresh oysters: We got a few key and isle oysters for the table and both were super fresh and delicious. These are truly some of the best oysters that I've had, and for $1.50 each you can't beat it. I really liked both the cocktail sauce and horseradish that came with it. (8.5/10) Szechuan dumplings: The dumplings were solid, but the sauce was on the salty side. I wouldn't get these again just because I've had better for a cheaper price elsewhere. (5.5/10) Fried Whole Chicken: This was the star of the show for me. The batter was crispy and well seasoned, the meat was juicy, and the sauces were great. The oyster mayo, honey sambal, and the green harissa helped to diversify the dish and also paired great with the biscuits. The biscuits were also a huge highlight of the meal for me. They were buttery, soft, and had the perfect texture. Some of the best biscuits I've ever had. I would come back just for this dish. (9/10) Tuna Tostada: I thought that this was super yummy. The tuna was fresh, the salsa was creamy, and the tostada was crispy. The only downside was that this was difficult to share. (7/10) Octopus a la plancha: This dish was the most disappointing to me because of how small it was. They charged $30 for a single octopus tentacle that was tough and overcooked. The flavors were also lackluster. As someone who loves octopus, this really missed the mark for me. (4/10) Grilled garlic parmesan oysters: These were okay. I was hoping for a more smoky/ grilled flavor, but all I could taste was the cheese. I would recommend getting the fresh ones instead. (5/10) Overall, I enjoyed my time at the restaurant and would definitely recommend people come for the oysters and fried chicken. The parking is valet, but they also have parking around the area that is free if you have some time to look around. La Lucha did not disappoint. I heard great things about this place and wanted to check it out. I kept seeing on TikTok that they had the best fried chicken in Houston- and me and my husband wanted to be the judge of that!! We made a reservation on a Sunday, and arrived earlier than our reservation time. They were nice enough to seat us so that was great. The restaurant was PACKED. Just an FYI it is a pretty tight restaurant from the inside. We had brought our baby and brought her car seat only bc her stroller would have taken up too much space. The staff was so accommodating so that was nice. Our waiter was great, super quick and attentive. He walked us through the menu which was helpful as first timers. Here is what we got- - Deviled Eggs with popcorn shrimp? 10/10. Freaking amazing. These were so delicious and so different! This was probably our favorite item and we wanted more as soon as they finished. - Tuna Tostada 10/10. This was a tostada with fresh raw tuna on top. It was dressed with onions, fresh lime, and avocado. It was so fresh and delicious. - Fried chicken and biscuits 8/10. This was really yummy! We got the full portion and felt silly because the half would have been more than enough for both of us..... the chicken was perfectly crispy and so tender. It came with biscuits and jam, and the chicken came with 3 different kinds of sauces which were unique and so good. It was so tender, seasoned perfectly, and juicy!! Everyone said it was the best fried chicken in Houston though. It's definitely delicious but I wouldn't say it's the best? I'm sad though bc we had leftover biscuits and our waiter didn't pack them he cleared the table and took them and we didn't realize until after. So that kind of made me upset because we were looking forward to having those biscuits as left overs! La Lucha was great!
