The crawfish etouffe was top notch. I got fried okra and candied yams as my sides. The okra was as perfectly fried. My husband did the burger and it was so juicy and flavorful. We searched for resturants for about a hour and just happened to run across this gem. I was like that's a interesting name. Brought me back to church! So we decided to give it a try. Right off the freeway and plenty of parking. We walked in and I must be honest the customer service off the back was a little dry. I expected a big warm welcome since it was a smaller spot. My bf told me to give grace since it was the day after a holiday and everybody tired. Lol. However, the food made up for it. Everything came out smoking hot. Where do I start. This place was actually a third choice of ours and im so glad the other ones didn't fall through because when I say this food is nothing less than AMAZING it really is. Upon arrival we were greeted and asked if this was our first time here and we did advise the young lady it was. She informed us that there were two separate boards hanging above one with appetizers, drinks, desserts and the other with the main courses oh yea they have daily specials thats on the chalkboard upon entrance as well. We waited for about 20 mins (worth every minute) the food comes in Styrofoam containers(only con) with plastic silverware. I ordered the (1) tasty trio, (2) catfish Atchafalaya and (3) fried catfish. The soul roll in the trio was ok -- the Mac n cheese was very dry and bland. The trio came with a grayish-green looking gravy dipping sauce that was not very good at all... it tasted almost like a thick gumbo roux with very little seasoning. The catfish Atchafalaya was supposed to come with étouffée on it, but the sauce I receive wasn't étouffée at all, it was that same grayish-green gravy on top of the fish -- not very good at all, I would not recommend it. The fried catfish by itself was ok, pretty standard fried fish. The mash potatoes, again, came with that same gravy sauce. Strangely, some parts of my food like the gravy and cornbread, tasted old. The service I received from the young lady that helped me was very good. She was sweet and helped me select the items on the menu as this was my first time visiting. There was another lady (who I believe is the cook) who was not very friendly at all -- she didn't smile, speak or give a welcoming vibe. I got the oxtail plate with a side of cabbage and mac n cheese. Let me just say, everything was seasoned and balanced in flavor perfectly. 10 out of 10 would recommend! Angelica was super friendly and inviting when I went to pick up my order. She recommended mixing my drink half watermelon and half mango flavor and it was sooo freakin delicious! This restaurant is a family owned business too so you know they're putting their heart and soul into it. I tried this place for the first time today after doing a search on Google Maps for soul food near me. Pros: -The food was piping hot when I got it! I loved that it was so fresh. I ate at the restaurant, so it was extra hot. Definitely a big plus. -The menu looks so good, I have to go back and try some other things on it. I got the fried chicken with 2 sides (and I got an extra side just to try it). I chose the candied yams, mac & cheese, and red beans & rice. As a whole, it was solid but not spectacular in my opinion. The chicken skin was seasoned well, and like I said, it was hot and fresh, but the actual chicken tasted a bit bland with not much seasoning. The mac & cheese tastes better than it looks in my opinion. It looks just like regular boiled noodles, but it tastes cheesy enough. The yams were good, and the red beans & rice was solid, but not enough flavor to me. Cons: -The food was fresh because it took forever for them to make it! I waited about 40 minutes on my food. To be fair, the restaurant does have a sign that says they cook everything fresh, so I knew that was going to happen. But still, it was a long wait! - I mentioned the cons for food taste already, so I won't belabor that point. All in all, it is definitely much more good than bad. But the cons meant I couldn't give it a 5 star rating in good conscience. But it is still a good restaurant and I highly suggest you go and try it out as well! read more

I usually don't get sweet tea at restraunts because its like syrup. But this spot has it perfect. Season meaning spices & herbs, etc. NOT overload of salt which many places tend to do IMHO. I really enjoyed the smothered pork chop, turkey wings and can't wait to try their oxtails. Ummm, yeah I almost fell asleep at my desk and I hardly ate 1/3 of the plate. The portions are just like soul food...more than enough "runneth over" :-) The sides are yummy too. My oxtail plate with yams and mac & cheese were okay overall. The rice & gravy was just rice & a lot grease no gravy whatsoever. The mac & cheese was dry with no flavor to me. The yams were okay. My husband had the catfish mardi gras special and it was very good with a lot flavor. His greens were good, but the red beans and rice were a no geaux for both of us. In conclusion it just made me want Mikki's Cafe when they have the good cook because my biggest issue with them is the inconsistency from day to day. Soulful is too pricey to not be great all the time in my opinion. I would eat it again, but not buy it myself minus rice and gravy though. read more

As soon as I walked in the door, I was warmly greeted by the young lady behind the counter. She welcome me and suggested some of their top selling dishes. She then offered this a amazing peach and mango Kool-Aid that will bless your socks off. Due to my time constraint so I decided to go with the burger and I was so full because it was so good. Y'all, this burger is served on hot buttery Texas toast with seasoned fries and has a sauce that made my soul happy. The service was fast. The food was hot and fresh. This cajun/soul food restaurant restaurant has been opened for about 6 weeks now and is located in a very large strip center on the Hwy. 290 frontage road with plenty of parking available in front. Inside, it's a counter service eatery with a nice upscale decor and vibe going with old handwritten recipes displayed on the walls and enjoyable music playing in the background. It has daily lunch specials and serves brunch on the weekend. My first visit was for soulful food and I ordered the smothered pork chops with side dishes of mashed potatoes and fried okra for $17. I added to that their mango peach ice tea and they also offer bottled Pepsi soft drinks. The food was ready in about 10 minutes and served in a styrofoam container with plastic utensils. The chops (2) were covered with gravy and onions on a bed of rice and more of the same gravy and with the sides represented a lot of food. I could see I wasn't going home hungry! The chops were big and tasty along with both sides. It was a good meal but honestly I wasn't a fan of the light brown gravy. To me, taste wise it lacked and I wanted to like it. Perhaps it's just me and you will differ. Also that peach mango tea was too sweet for my taste and had a thicker consistency than regular brewed tea that I didn't like. I gave this meal a 3 score all things considered Including the drink. My next visit was to try the shrimp sandwich with seasoned fries for $14. This time they had brewed unsweetened ice tea thank goodness. About 10 minutes later the food arrived. The sandwich sat on square toasted sandwich bread with 7-8 large fried shrimp along with the lettuce, tomato, pickles and a tasty sauce. I was impressed with the size and taste of this sandwich. It was very good and had plenty of shrimp to eat. I would call it a massive sandwich. Also the seasoned fries were very good to eat too. When I think of a shrimp sandwich, I will probably be thinking of this one (5). The staff here is friendly and I will return. read more

This is a small mom and pop black-owned business on the north side of Houston. Everything that I have tasted today was amazing. The best shrimp and grits I've ever had.!! The shrimp and grits had so much flavor. I am see that the shrimp was flavored with onion, red bell peppers and bay leaf, seasoning and chives on top. It sure made a difference in the flavor for me. I was in the neighborhood, so I stopped in to have some incredible soul food courtesy of Angelica and her mother at O Taste & See Eatery ! We started off with the BBQ Pulled Pork Egg Rolls, and then had Oxtails and Catfish with Etoufee. They even threw in some BBQ Deviled Eggs! We washed it down with Tropical Punch and Swamp Water (Green Apple and Watermelon). Guys amd gals, to say it was delicious would be a major understatement. This food was RESTORATIVE. It was like going home and then Mom fixes a huge dinner. The walls were decorated with Angelica's grandmother's recipes. I felt like her family was really sharing their lives with us, and that is something that's missing from a lot of Houston restaurants: HEART! It was a good thing it was served in boxes, because we had to take it home and enjoy it all again that evening! I only wish I would have had room for dessert. The Trio came with fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, and two specialty eggrolls- first the fact there were fried green tomatoes on the menu was awesome, the fried pickles were perfectly battered and fried, and the eggrolls were huge! We tried the Soul Rolls for the Specialty Eggrolls which were Mac and Cheese, Cabbage, and Yams in an eggroll- each was delicious on their own but the texture of all 3 mixed in a wonton wrapper was a little odd. I can't wait to try their Boudain Eggroll. The pasta was perfect, as well, creamy and not salty with perfect amount of spice! The Chicken and Sausage Gumbo didn't even last 2 minutes, it was so good. We ordered the special Lamb Chops, the 406 Catfish, and the Fried Chicken and French toast. Lamb chops, 2/3 were still raw. Catfish, way too salty with the cream sauce. Fried Chicken, bland. Rice(side dish) was good. Sweet tea was good, fruit punch tasted like Kool-Aid with sugar. The ventilation was poor where our eyes started to get watery. the food was alright. wasn't the best but it wasn't bad either. my main complaint is that there was a bone in my fried catfish that i didn't realize was there until i swallowed it. I spent the next 30 minutes trying to fish this bone out of my throat, in the process i threw up. my throat is all cut up from the bone. in the end I had to drive to H-E-B to buy a banana to force it down.
