I will have to say that at a glance this place will look like no big deal. A hole in the wall as a matter of fact. You could drive by it and look at it and say "ehhh" but once you go in and eat, you will be in heaven. Every time I am in town, this is where I ask to be taken to straight from the airport. The seafood gumbo is to die for and the oysters are fresh, the jumbo shrimp are delicious. I am not at all a huge breaded shrimp type of a person, but their breaded shrimp and breaded oysters are so lightly battered, they are just super yummy in your mouth! And on top of it all... it is so dirt cheap, you will walk out stuffed with seafood and saying WOW! If you have not tried this place, I truly would recommend it. Was in the mood for cajun seafood, I found this place on yelp and had a go. The waitstaff was very helpful when I informed them it was my first time there. I ordered up some sort of fried feast and a gumbo, wife got something similar. Usually, Hush-puppies are balls of pointless, fried, tasteless starch. These were actually quite good. The stuff crab was quite interesting, not just a bunch of breading with a few shreds of crab. It was spiced well and had shrimp in the mix. The gumbo, well, i guess it was my bad, I had assumed it was the delectable dark gumbo. It was the red stuff. Still pretty good, and in the future, I'll know to ask first. Overall, the value for money is decent, tho I don't know if Capt. Benny's will make it to my "rotation" of places I enjoy. The service was solid, too. read more

I was actually really hesitant of coming here to eat since I didn't enjoy the Stafford location at all. The service here is awesome and the food is delicious! I don't 'get to' come here nearly as often as I used to. Work doesn't bring me to Houston Hobby as often any more. I used to look forward to and LOVE their Crawfish Etoufee and I had it countless times. It wasn't like other places that served it. The rough/sauce was darker than normal and was a bit more soupy than normal but MAN was it tasty. Sadly, the last three times I've been when I ordered it, it appeared more like what I've seen elsewhere, ie a much lighter rough with noticable onions/pepper (I'd normally like the extra onion and peppers but pointing out the difference) and not nearly as soupy. Obviously, they are making it different now for some reason. The result is something like you see everywhere else but more bland. Additionally, the crawfish has been overcooked each of the last three times. Ugh. read more

With it's home town atmosphere and it's delicious gumbo, Captain Benny's is always a good choice. The staff there is friendly and makes it a point to make you feel like you are at home. OK, I have been a fan of Capt. Benny's for many years. Great Oyster bar, but much more. The oysters are FRESH, cold and clean. Simple formula but too many other establishments do not use quality product or open the oysters per order. The catfish is an AMERICAN PRODUCT. Not some mystery fish from China or God know where. The shrimp are Gulf of Mexico product. The oysters are local or Louisiana product. Items that I like, Gumbo, Stuff Jalapenos, Oysters on the half shell, and Stuff Flounder. Yes, someone with me always get the fried shrimp and they are always great, and I always steal a shrimp. Quick story: A business partner of mine had lunch at the Rankin location one day and my friend ordered the stuffed flounder. A few days later we were with a customer at a high dollar seafood restaurant near the Galleria. He again order the stuff flounder. He sent it back. It was twice the price as compared to Capt. Benny's and looked and tasted VERY BAD. He now uses Capt Benny's to compare other restaurants. Do not expect fancy. Do not expect a full bar. Sit at the oyster bar and make new friends. One star is overstating my thoughts on this place but that was as low as I could rate it. We were in Galveston for vacation and went to Houston to take the kids to the Natural History Museum. I was in the mood for gumbo and after some searching online I found this right off 45 headed back to Galveston so we stopped. I wish we hadn't found it because this may have been one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. I ordered a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo and the 12 fried shrimp basket. The chicken sausage gumbo had okra in it. I should have asked but I forgot. Okra belongs in seafood gumbo not chicken and sausage gumbo. There chicken and sausage gumbo is labeled wrong on the menu - it should be labeled as okra gumbo (with a little chicken and sausage). The cup was overflowing with okra. It was impossible to avoid. I had exactly 1 small piece of chicken and 2 pieces of sausage in the entire cup. However there was enough okra in my cup to fill a whole pot of seafood gumbo. It was horrible. They are doing gumbo a disservice by calling what they serve gumbo. It should be labeled stewed okra with a little chicken and sausage. Next the fried shrimp - myself and my son ordered the 12 piece fried shrimp basket. We both received 8 pieces. The waitress said they were cooking more. After we both ate half our basket we decided they weren't that good and didn't want the other 4 that still hadn't made it to our table yet and it had been over 10 minutes. I got the waitresses attention and told her nevermind on the other shrimp. She had the nerve to be offended because they were already cooking them. Well you should have brought them out correctly the first time. As far as their taste - average at best. Service was bad as well. Our drinks sat empty until we were finished eating and its not like this place is huge and super busy. In my opinion the only thing worse than paying for bad food and service is having to wait to pay for bad food and service. We were done eating for over 10 minutes but no waitress in site to bring our bill. She finally shows with our check and a drink refill. Too late, we finished eating and wanted to get out of this place. Horrible food, horrible service, horrible experience. Never again. read more

I'm a regular during the Lenten season as I like fried catfish. I also enjoy the hot fries and extra lemons along with a full bottle of hot sauce. I prefer the Main street location, but this location is closer to my home and more convenient for me. The ladies have always been really sweet and I always walk out satisfied. Passing through from Port Aransas to New Orleans we had to find a place that would allow our dogs on the patio. The servers and staff were sweet and prompt. We ordered gator, popcorn shrimp(larger than normal), shrimp, scallops( big and juicy), chicken tenders and catfish. Nothing disappointed!!! Best seafood I have had in a long time. I understand they are busy because it's stock show, but we got there at 8:30 seated at 9:00 they told us 45 min to an hour before we would get our food. The place only holds maybe 100 people. We had a party of 11 and we had kids who needed to eat. Another family behind us had small children and they were still there when we left. The food started coming out at 10:30. My daughter and I ordered 12 oysters baked, at 11:00 after everyone got their food I told them to cancel our order. The waitress said it's in the oven I said ok, then 5 min later she came out and sAid she cancelled the order. I think these people can't handle the volume, so don't let people in!! I've always lived in the area and never noticed this place until I went on a town search for oysters. Who would've thought that capt. Benny's was a 2 min drive from where I lived! It seems a bit sketchy from the outside and when I entered I was prompt with a couple of tables with ragged table tops. Not a surprise for a seafood restaurant. My friend and I was seated and the waitress came up takes one look at me and that was it. She never even bother to talk to me! She greeted my friend and they chatted in Spanish for the whole meal. So I sat there looking like a dumb fool every time she came and checked on my friend. The food was okay , stuff shrimp tasted like it was freshly defrost. The boiled shrimp was actually quite a bit flavorful. Overall the only thing that was mildly great about the visit was the oysters and even than it tasted really gritty like they weren't washed correctly. Bad service. Decent food. read more

Looks like a place right out of a movie. A little run down, but clean and a lot of character. A little worn and lots of corrugated metal used in the construction. Reminds me of some movie about the South with that stereotypical fried seafood shack. Went on a Wednesday night and it was about 30% full (mostly at the bar). There was an older asian lady security guard standing around on the patio, obviously packing heat and keeping vigilant watch. It's not every day that little old asian ladies make me feel safer, but hey, there's a first time for everything I guess. Speaking of first time for everything, this was the first time I tried raw oysters. Not much to speak of. Mostly tasted like horseradish, Tabasco and phlegm. Just joking... I tasted a piece of sand as well.... Probably because I had no idea how to eat them. Not something I'd specifically search out, but I'll try most anything once. The waitresses were very nice, the wait for the food seemed to take longer than it should, but hey, I have no idea how people make etoufee. I assumed they just scooped it out of a pot, but maybe I'm wrong. When it did make it to the table, the crawfish etoufee was on par with Pappadeux at the airport. (That means it was pretty much a 9 out of 10. Yeah, it was that good.) The big surprise actually though, was the french fries. I ordered it ala carte and wow! Not really too crisp, but I could taste the shrimp or beer batter or something that was also cooked in the same oil.
